Old Halfway House in Wakefield

We had a family meal at the Old Halfway House and had a fantastic experience. The food was brilliant and the service was very polite friendly and professional. I would definitely recommend 5 stars

Had an all day breakfast which was top notch and everything cooked just right. My son had garlic ciabatta and chips. The chips were homemade and lovely, but a big shout-out to the garlic ciabatta, which was the most garlicky of garlic breads I've ever tasted! Absolutely beautiful.

Lovely atmosphere, I was meeting with friends for a chat & the young lady who served us was happy to turn the music down a little, which was great. She was friendly, very helpful & had a good vibe. We ordered from the lunch menu that was reasonably priced, the ciabatta sandwiches where really good, I had the steak sandwich with curly fries.One of friend's had a fish finger one; not like your normal fish fingers these where chunky & crispy😋 I will be going back for that one. The halloumi sandwich ordered by my other friend looked good too, will try that, one day too😁

I have passed this pub many times but not been in until now. Had a very warm welcome and ordered Philly Steak sandwich and chips. The steak was perfectly cooked and the sandwich was lovely. The star of the show was the amazing chips, I don't know how they cook them but they were fantastic. My friend also enjoyed her fish finger sandwich and also commented on the chips. Unfortunately there were only another two people dining which is a shame as the standard was high and perfectly priced

A warm welcome, well kept beer and good food. Can recommend the grilled veg and the fish finger ciabattas. Don't forget your extra serving of chips as they are gorgeous.

We went for Sunday lunch around 2pm. The man serving was very friendly and helpful, he was definitely the highlight. The roast was disappointing: over cooked beef and overcooked vegetables. The scampi and chips were ok, but the chips were extremely greasy and the peas were overcooked to the point that they weren’t very green anymore.

Went recently as heard there was new management and wanted to see how it differed. What a lovely experience we had. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was lovely and we as a family will definitely be returning.

Came couple of weeks ago, had steak which was gone off, you could even smell it was off, pub gone down hill, beer also off can tell lines not been cleaned in ages, manager amiee didn't give me refund but offered me free drink, Sorry but a free drink doesn't cover me having gone off meat, will definitely avoiding this place

I’ve just witnessed the staff being talked to like absolute flith. “Get to the bar now” “Get in that kitchen your break is done” To make it worse the later was a young lad around 18 talking to staff like this. I’m literally in shock!

First time going to halfway house since it has been taken over. Food was nice but not amazing. Used disabled toilet which was absolutely filthy. Toilet seat for children was full of grime. I wouldn’t want to touch it never mind put my child on it

Had a dismal experience at The Old Halfway House. The staff were rude, even telling us to ‘move out the way’ while we were just standing at the bar. That alone made us decide not to stay for a meal. Wouldn’t recommend.

What's going on at this place.Car park on weekend afternoons used to be busy. Been past today at 1.30;(Saturday) not a single vehicle in the car park.

We stopped coming to the half way house as the food was rubbish !!! But after hearing it had been taken over we thought we would give it another go , The food was all fresh and lovely .We will definitely be coming again .

Came up for my old man's birthday and had a fabulous time. The new manager is a good fit for the pub. Charming funny and loves a cucumber. So if you have one and fancy tipping her. She would very much appreciate it

A lovely, quaint little place with a cosy atmosphere and a great outside seating area. The service was friendly and helpful and the food arrived quickly and well presented. Everything tasted great and I heavily recommend the homemade onion rings. If you are looking for a relaxing place for a nice lunch, I would definitely check this place out.

It’s recently changed hands, both myself and wife had scampi and chips, a bit overpriced and new owners certainly put price up. Scampi ok, but chips, omg, totally dry, burnt and done in some herb.. disgusting! Had the feeling they were reheated. We were the only ones in (6 pm) and can’t say I’m surprised, it was always packed. Used to be our regular, but no longer.

Went for lunch. 2 for 1 burgers which is always a win. Food was great, staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend the pub and will be coming back again for sure

My family and I stopped by on Sunday for a Sunday lunch and I’m so glad we did! Staff were really friendly and we had a good laugh with them, meat was perfectly cooked and the Yorkshire puddings were huge! Worth every penny we spent and we can’t wait to come back for our next meal!

We called in on the spurr of the moment only 1 car in the car park we thought it was closed , but no they were serving Sunday lunch , we ordered two roast beef meals they looked OK when they arrived but everything was luke warm and the beef was so tough we could hardly cut it let alone chew it , we did complain and were refunded for one of the meals , staff and service was good but whoever is in the kitchen should be got rid of they are costing this business dearly on a plus point drinks were good and reasonably priced.

Dropped in for Sunday lunch and wish we hadn't it was absolutely garbage yorkshire puddings were stodgy the mash tasted like powder stuff and as for the meat it was like boot leather, an empty car park should have been a clue. There's more reviews on trip advisor, avoid this place.

The staff are all very friendly and attentive. Very welcoming and go above and beyond! The burgers we had were very tasty indeed! Always a pleasure to pop in whether it’s just for a drink or food as well.

The previous review was clearly written out of spite. The old halfway house is a lovely fresh home cooked food and have a very chatty and bubbly team. Amy is really attentive nd helpful very warming personality. We’ve been coming to the halfway for years and since meeting Amy has always made time to have a little chat with us.

Not the best experience. Another couple was disappointed as they didn't have what they wanted and they had to choose something else on the menu. I wanted a chicken and bacon salad to be told there was no bacon and then no chicken, delivery hadn't showed up. The manager said to take the chicken off the skewers and use them

Popped in on a Monday and ordered the chuk and brisket burger, didn't take long to come out and the burger was one of the best I've had, was cooked perfectly for me, the chips were also perfectly cooked. The staff there are amazing super friendly and efficient. The Beer garden is a great size with lots of room, I will definitely be going back for more food.

Came in for a catch up with a friend and take advantage of the 2-4-1 burger deal they’ve started. We both loved our burgers and were happy they didn’t have to be the same ones! The girls working were really nice, good selection of beers too

The meal was shocking. Called in Sunday afternoon at about 2pm. Should have turned around then as car park all but empty just like the pub . Only food available Sunday lunch.. fair enough Ordered roast beef and trimmings. Basically I prefer my beef cooked!!!! Blood running down the plate…. Sent it straight back saying to the poor serving girl I like my beef cooked!!!! Came back soon and looked cooked… But basically it was not fit to eat as the so called beef was so tough I could not cut the beef!!!!! My wife’s was hardly any better and blood running on the plate!!! Left the vast majority. Poor lass asked us was our meal good so I had to tell her not good at all. She did say she would let the chief know… I assume they do have someone who knows how to cook???? Left and went back to the car… Noticed the chef??? Come out of kitchen with his cig hanging out of his mouth looking across at us but quickly disappeared…. Basically I would never ever go here again …. So so bad !!!! At the best part of £35 I would like a refund asap. What can I say … If you want a decent Sunday roast avoid this place like the plague!!!!

We recently attended the grand reopening of this wonderful pub, and the landlady, Bec, made us feel so welcome. It was great to see that they have three parking bays and a fully accessible disabled toilet, which was perfect for my nephew, who uses a wheelchair. The outdoor area is delightful, and the bar has an impressive range of drinks, including four new cocktails that Bec told us about. We can't wait to come back soon to try the food—it looked delicious and smelled fantastic. To make the experience even better, there was a live singer, adding to the already great atmosphere!

Ok if you like microwave food and if they know how to use it . Poor everything

We celebrated my Dad's birthday here yesterday and had a lovely afternoon. A few drinks in the beer garden with nice seating, we loved the "old fire pit" seating area. We later moved inside to sit on a table for 10 and all really enjoyed our meals, really tasty and well priced. All staff were polite and friendly. We'll be back 😃 ❤️ The Andersons

Ordered the Thai green curry, I declined the extra chicken as I’m a veggie,.They came and told us after 10 mins that they didn’t have any rice left so I had to have it with a jacket potato.When it eventually came out it had a whole chicken escalope on top I again explained i was veggie and they took it bk to the kitchen took the chicken off and brought it bk out.My curry also had random chips in it and I didn’t even order chips so not sure how they got there ! My partner ordered a rump steak but they didn’t have any left either but he was offered a sirloin instead.All in all a very disappointing visit,not good value for money at all. Had to carry a pot of tea outside to my table as well with other drinks and wasn’t even offered a tray so had to make several trips. In reply to the response …Your response doesn’t really read like an apology of any kind .We were out for a special occasion and this ruined our evening as it wasn’t just one thing it was one thing after another.You got one thing right though it was very disappointing!

Stopped for a drink. Some lovely Ossett ales on offer including White Rat and Wainwrights. Nice beer garden.

Had such a nice experience today here. The atmosphere is lovely. The outdoor area is so inviting and the family loved the food and drink. The nicest part of the visit was the service provided by Vicky and Lydia. They couldn’t do enough for us and were very friendly too. I’ll return just based on their good customer service. It’s a hard thing to come by these days.

Lovely pub ,food & friendly staff.Been going for a few years now for lunch. However we have been a bit disappointed as they have changed the lunch menu which is mainly sandwiches , wraps , jacket potatoes which are all very nice . We used to love the other lunch time menu as there was more selection on meals eg scampi , Hunters Chicken , lasagna ,Burger . Gammon . Please can you bring back the old lunch time menu.

I have visited to eat on half a dozen occasions with my wife over the last 4/5 months as I did yesterday. The meal again was hot and very nice as usual. I always get a mixed grill as there is always plenty to eat. Unfortunately, I noticed a few changes and the plate was definitely more sparse. I don't know if these are intentional, but there were changes and items missing compared to my previous visits? 1 The chips were definitely of a poorer standard. 2 There wasn't any Black Pudding incuded. 3 There wasn't any Chicken Wings on the bone included. 4 I may be wrong but I think Mushrooms were included before? As I say the Meal was good (as always) but yesterday the meal was definitely not as impressive as your usual standard for nearly £16. I did email the Pub to point this out but haven't had a reply.

Poor Sunday lunch was not enough on the plate £15.00 each, poor choice of cocktails and beers. Sorry not coming back.

Shocking customer service. Went in with my daughter for a drink and food. Asked at the bar if we could sit anywhere in the food area to order. " yes anywhere you like".... took us 20mins to catch someone's attention to say we'd likento order. "Oh..... we have a big booking coming in so not sure if we can help, i will ask"...... the place was dead!..... I replied we would find somewhere else........ reply was..... "oh ok" Wow shocking!

Absolute joke of a food pub . Got there at 7.30pm only to be told that the kitchen had closed 5 minutes before. Bar maid was very patronising.

Just been in for lunch,we had lasagna, it was very nice, we love coming here as the whole place is exceptionally clean and tidy, along with the service which you can't fault.

Another lovely visit, this is the second time in 6 months we have been and yet again it didn’t disappoint. The food was good value for money and the staff very friendly and attentive, a young lady called Lydia served us from start to finish, friendly, happy and extremely helpful, a pleasurable lunch for my wife and I. Been here a few times with my sister and the food was absolutely amazing. The atmosphere was great and the vibes were awesome! The staff were very kind. Me and my sister were served by a young lady called Caroline. Who was a lovely girl! The place is lovely and would highly recommend a visit! All the best

Came in today to have Sunday lunch with my nan. Food was amazing and my nan loved it too, hard to please a 90 year old master chef!!!! Caroline our waitress was extremely polite and especially caring towards my nan as she is hard of hearing and Caroline took her time to read her the specials. Bar staff pulled a bloody lovely pint too. Will definitely be returning soon!

My friend and I often visit the Old Halfway House as it’s local to us both. Until relatively recently, we have been for the lunchtime menu, and it’s been fairly good. The pub has a nice atmosphere, and it’s clean and tidy. However, the menu has now changed; the lunchtime menu has increased from £6 to £8. Soft drinks have also increased, and a glass of coke is now £4.25, which is simply too much. This last visit, I ordered scampi chips and peas. I could hardly believe my eyes when the server brought my meal. There were 9 small pieces of scampi, a few chips and what I estimated to be 1 spoon of peas. I was really upset about this. The tartar sauce was also underwhelming - a tiny bit in the bottom of the dish. The plate actually looked like a child’s meal. Ok, so we all know prices are increasing across all sectors, but whilst pubs need to make a profit, customers also need value for money, and this falls woefully short of what one would expect. Would a few extra peas and chips, and maybe a couple more pieces of scampi really cost that much more for better customer satisfaction? I’ll answer that myself - no. When the lady came to collect our plates, we were asked if everything was ok. I mentioned the measly portion size, and she said she’d mention it to the kitchen. We remained in the pub a good 20 minutes, but she never returned, so I don’t know what the kitchen had said. We were going to order dessert, but after seeing that portion size, decided we wouldn’t bother. As mentioned before, we eat out locally once a week, so we have plenty of places with which to compare this to, and it falls way short of the competition. It is sad, but we will be finding somewhere with better value for money in future.

Rubbish and a rip off! Went here for a family meal which was really disappointing due to the tiny portion sizes. I ordered a kids meal and when it turned up there was 2 chicken nuggets and a small handful of horrible chips. Other meal came with some mash which was the smallest portion I've ever seen! So after eating the small amount of food everyone in out party was still hungry, so much so we had to stop at McDonald's on the way home. Then when I asked about the free kids meal that was advertised on their website, I was told it wasn't on anymore, even though the we visted between the dates stipulated. There was also no exclusions on the 'offer'. Mentioned my disappointed to the manager, only to be told 'the sizes are brand standard' so basically 'tough. No offer to subsidise the food I had to buy afterwards and clear false advertising of the 'free kids meal'that doesn't exist. Worst place I have visited for food in some time.

Great atmosphere with some lovely outdoor seating options. A short but dashing young barkeep named Lou was very helpful with suggesting items off the menu and made me feel welcome. Will be coming back.

Booked online but no table available when we arrived so had to sit in the bar area by the front door. I ordered the Grilled chicken and bacon salad and 3 of the ingredients were missing.- no avocado no soya beans and no slow roasted tomato. It was basically a bit of bagged salad, one rasher of bacon and half a chicken breast. My husband ordered the bbq burger which was a very thin burger on a small brioche bun. We were still very hungry so ordered the sharing dessert combo which I would have said was really for one person. The food we did have was ok but wouldn’t go back
