I can see some recent negative reviews and feel the need to share our very recent experience.Our Mum had passed away and after contacting several venues requesting details of how a wake works under the current “Covid“ situation, we had more or less decided to give up, something that just added to our sadness. That was until I spoke with Maddie who was not only sympathetic but explained the regulations in every detail and as strict as they needed to be, assured us that provided the attendee’s stick to the rules, they wouldn’t be made to feel like a class full of 30 children on detention.We felt a massive relief and the rest as they say is history.The food was fresh, plentiful and well presented to each table, we were able to run a slide show of pictures of happier times with Mum on a big screen whilst 2 barmen took drink orders per table and served them as quickly as they could.The ironic and very fitting point I have to make is that this was the very pub that we had enjoyed many a happy night in with our parents during the reign of “Tom and Rose” in the 70’s.Heartfelt thanks to Maddie and all the team at the Bread and Cheese.

Visited on Sunday 9th of May. Had a 7 o clock table booked menu was not great but ordered the Steak which was ok,Then was asked if I wanted desert. And ordered sticky toffee pudding , only to be told the kitchen was closed Not impressed at all...

Visited on a Friday evening and the table service was shocking, I’m not sure if it was lack of staff or poorly trained staff. We were shown to a table and after 20mins I asked a member of staff for a menu, 40 mins later I managed to get hold of someone to take our drinks order, so all in all we had been there for an hour without so much as a drink.Have to say our food came quite quickly and was very nice. Wouldn’t bother with the chocolate salted caramel cheesecake, not a lot of caramel going on there. Nice to have some live music, I would give them another go and hope they have sorted their staffing issues.

Visited on Friday and the table service was awful. Waiting 30 mins for someone to come over and take our drink order then another 25 minutes for them to bring us the order! They also added an extra £18 onto our bill for shots we never ordered! They also had no outside heaters so was freezing! Would no recommend going at all!

Takeaway Sunday lunch was superb. Big portions, good value. Support your local pub at their time of need!

Visited on Sunday 1st at 7.30pm only to be told we are now closed??? There Facebook site and there website clearly stated they close at 9pm on a Sunday.We had only travelled 4 miles but we were meeting friend who had travelled over 10.What a waste of time.So I left a message on their website, and no one has bothered to get back to me. Shocking service.

Hadn’t been here for a while so thought we’d give it another try, nice friendly staff who explained the kitchen was a bit backed up with orders and seemed reluctant to take ours.Although it wasn’t very busy in the restaurant area we waited 45 minutes for our food, my wife had steak with double cooked chips which were limp and tasteless, I had Katsu chicken curry which is sliced chicken in breadcrumbs but was instead a chicken breast cut in half with what looked like and tasted like a dollop of homepride curry sauce on top.This was sent back as I wasn’t going to pay £15 for that!They are charging restaurant prices for poor quality food. Won’t be going back, very disappointing

Although it was a monday night and a quiet one the food was absolutely fantastic. Will definately be coming back to try the rest of the menu. There is something there for every one.

Took mum and dad for belated birthday , this is definitely the best afternoon tea I’ve experienced , we had two traditional and gentleman’s afternoon tea amazing, the gents was great sausage roll , beef sandwich, pickle , scotch egg , plus more . The traditional was lovely as well scones great the whole thing , very well presented. The staff are sooo friendly and hard working , too make sure everything is great . We’ve been to the Ritz and many places I must say this was a much more pleasurable experience . Would highly recommend thanks guys absolutely great .

Had a lovely meal here for Valentines. It was a gourmet steak evening and the food was so good. All staff were very attentive, with special thanks to Arron, Aiden & Charlotte for making us feel so welcome. Highly recommended The Bread & Chesse. Huge complements to the chef!

Have passed this restaurant over 26 years and never ate there. What a lovely supriseTables set well , there was 8 of us , so tables were in shape of a square , so everyone could could speak & hear each otherFood really nice , & leave room for a pud Staff friendly, I had taken a birthday cake in & they bought it out perfectly

Popped in on the spur of the moment as we were passing, Got seated straight away and the waitress appeared straight away and took our drinks order. The restaurant is quite spacious and airy with plenty of room. We ordered mixed breads to share as a started which came with stuffed peppers and olive oil. Bread was slightly dry but other wise delicious. Had ham egg and chips for my main course which was wonderful especially the chips. Would recommend

This was our first visit here , nice ambiance, and very friendly attentive staff , we ordered a starter . Crayfish and prawn , and the chicken . Also we both ordered the steak , I will say the meal was delicious the steak was cooked superb ,and well presented , the starters were lovely , but we waited 45 mins , and the mains came out first . I would of 5?but this is the only reason I didn’t . The staff was extremely apologetic and put right the problem and was still apologised. This will not stop us from returning as all great apart from the wait . A lovely meal . And great staff thanks guys . We will return .

First Xmas day lunch in many years and we had a wonderful meal. Service was spot on and the staff were all very attentive Food was plentiful and nicely presented. Highly recommend.

Only the second time in 26 years that I haven’t cooked on Christmas Day and what a lovely experience it was. The dedication and professionalism of the staff was faultless. A lovely ambience - the restaurant was festively and tastefully decorated. Everything was cooked perfectly, presented attractively with attention to detail. Our family of 6 adults all thoroughly enjoyed our delicious starters - truffled parsnip soup, salmon and avocado tower and pork belly with black pudding. We welcomed the palate cleansing orange sorbet that followed. The traditional Norfolk Roast Turkey with all the trimmings/vegetables with a lovely slight crunch and Fillet of Beef Wellington were delicious. Everyone was almost defeated when the tantalising home cooked desserts were served - sticky toffee pear pudding, traditional Christmas pudding and Italian semifreddo with cranberries and limoncello. The polite, friendly, attentive staff kindly boxed up the mince pies and some of the Beef Wellington that was left. Well done and thank you to the chef and all the staff for making our delicious Christmas Day lunch so enjoyable and stress free.

Not as impressed as we’d hoped. Gluten free choices available but limited by not having bread available so had to settle for meals with bits missing, they did agree to reduce the price but nit what we were looking for. Meals were okay, certainly not somewhere to run back to but was okay.

Lovely staff, cosy environment to have a spot of lunch in a pub. Exceeds my expectations for a pub lunch. It was delicious. Would definitely return if I was in Benfleet again!

Popped in on route to nearby restaurant for lunch on NYE, decent selection of beers especially the Maltsmiths IPA and a more than decent selection of Gins that has its own Drinks Menu. Nicely decorated for Xmas, and with good music playlist.

A thoroughly enjoyable and scrumptious festive afternoon tea in a very pleasant, seasonally decorated and spotless environment. A lovely selection of festive sandwiches and savoury pastries. The cakes all homemade on the premises by the chef and his sister looked impressive and equally tasted delicious - especially the little red velvet ones with bronze dusted macaroons on top and the lemon/poppy seed cakes, which were much nicer than the ones eaten in The Delaunay in November! We couldn’t eat everything and the scones flavoured with a seasonal hint of orange, little pots of cream and jam plus a couple of the other tempting cakes were boxed up for us. Friendly, efficient staff too.

Dined here today and kept my coat on for most of the meal. We did ask for heating to be turned up, the reply was that it took a long time for heating to warm up! Surely in that case put the heating on earlier, it must be on a timer or upgrade the system. You are losing custom as we wouldn’t return until the warmer month’s.

Good menu with plenty of choice, staff are very professional and food is great. But you need a coat at lunchtimes as it’s uncomfortably cold In the restaurant 😔

Went to “bread and cheese” as a treat as don’t live any where near. It is so nice staff were amazing. Friendly warm and polite. Food was soooooo nice.

Just had a last minute birthday Sunday Lunch - booked that morning. Expecting a typical pub sunday roast and starter. However, very impressed and definitely a cut above the usual pub offerings, with both starter and roast dinner. It was delicious and we all commented on how we had enjoyed our meals. We had two childrens meals, which were plentiful. Unfortunately, our two little ones had gone a bit past their meal times and didn't eat all of it, but this was no reflection on the taste of the meal.

Had my 65th Birthday lunch there yesterday with dear friends & family..The service was excellent & so was all the meals..& the bill I got at the end wasn’t too bad either..Will defiantly be returning there at sometime & will/have recommend the Bread & Cheese..

Not really a pub grub person last time I used the Bread and Cheese was probably 6 years ago. I was on the way to my usual haunt in Benfleet but the whole town was gridlocked due to accidents. I worked out of town and on the spur of the moment chose to dive into the B&C; - easy parking and very pleasant greeting. Seated in bright window table and prompt couple of drinks - only one driving! We then ordered a salad for the lady and fish for me both sometimes a challenge in a pub - both really attractively presented and fish was perfect. No sweet as in a rush a really great unexpected experience - will be returning.

Had a lunch. A lot of flies. (Due to weather but still not great ). I wasn’t impressed. Tbh. Had a lunch that was over £60 on an average meal and one drink. One meal one drink 4 people. ...ok place but won’t return

Hadn't been here for quite a while so thought we would try Sunday lunch again. We were there quite early and it wasn't busy but after placing our order we were kept waiting 45 mins for our starters. There were actually quite a lot of waiting staff so guess the problem was in the kitchen - wonder how long we would have waited if they were busy. There were quite a few different vegetables with the roast but it was all a bit tasteless. The sweets were very nice. A 2 course meal is £21.95 and 3 courses are £25.95 which we thought was a bit excessive in comparison with many other public houses in the area that we have tried.

Very nice and welcoming, food very nice and didn’t have to wait for it too long very pleasant, would go again highly recommend,

Haven't been here for many years but the restaurant is a nice place to sit, maybe a bit scruffy around the edges, but spacious and nice for families. The blonde waitress was very friendly and easy to talk to but clearly rushed off her feet with a lack of staff, but that did improve later on. The food was not quick but what came out of the kitchen more than made up for that. The chef clearly knows what he is doing and all our main meals from pies to burgers and fish were generous well cooked, made to order and tasted great! We had desserts and again the quality was very good, it was all very enjoyable and value for money. Maybe lack of staff can let them down at times but so long as the good chef is working, this for me is by far the best pub/restaurant I have been to in an area where good food/service is hard to find.

A very good menu with plenty of interesting choices. All the food we had was very enjoyable and the Chicken Indiana was exceptional.

Disappointed bread starter stale. Skewer main course poor 1 beef and 1 chicken skewer with an abundance of salad to fill the plate for over priced £18. Vegan burger ok bun obviously frozen or stale then toasted. Service poor. No one in charge. Wouldn't return.

Fantastic Food Amazing staff who are a credit to the Bread and Cheese Pud Ellie and Aaron were brilliant always smiling and made everyone feel so welcome. You won't be disappointed.... Sunday roasts are amazing too x

food average, atmosphere very clique, staff miserable and quite rude and whilst trying to eat our over priced dinner, staff were spraying the tables next to us with cleaning products, which ended up the taste of my dinner whilst hoovering around our feet (at 5pm in the afternoon with staff discussing at what time they think they should choose to close), so to say the least felt rushed and unwanted, but was more than happy to take our money. Would not recommend at all.

Me and the wife sat down for a meal ordered drinks and some cheesy natchos before our main meal . After finishing our drinks the natchos didn't show up and after forty minutes we got up and left . Shame as we had a nice quiet table and the place wasn't busy . They apologised and let us have our drinks for free but we then had to get a takeaway as we were starving .

We had heard good reviews about this place, so decided to book it for my husband's 60th birthday. It was 7 o'clock on a Friday evening so we were surprised to see that it wasn't very busy.

First time here since the refurbishment. Really nice and the food was excellent. The waitresses were polite and attentive. Live music in the afternoon (Sunday) which made the day all the more enjoyable.

Lovely decor good atmosphere lovely food with a good. Choice and daily specials plenty of love,y deserts. Plenty of parking

We arrived without a booking on a quiet Monday evening around 8pm. We were greeted by a friendly server who sat us down and took our drinks order straight away! We chose from the specials board, an amazing seafood salad including octopus and lobster to start, followed by a loin strip in a tasty mushroom sauce with chunky chips and asparagus. The whole meal was delicious and the service was great!

A very good experience, food & plates were hot, service prompt & attentive without being obtrusive, resonably priiced. Neither lonely or noisy & without the hated musac. A bit chilly temperature wise

Nice pub, lovely food and nice decor. Particularly like the beer garden in the summer with its gin bar and outdoor pizza oven.

Our first visit and what a lovely surprise. Everything you could wish for. Lovely relaxing decor, friendly welcoming staff and fabulous food! We will be back!

1st visit here and have to say was a bit disappointed. Starter of coconut prawns was okay, couldn't taste any coconut unfortunately. Had roast beef for main, lots of gristle in the beef, 3 not particularly big roast potatoes and gravy didn't taste of anything at all. Price for 2 meals with 1 drink each £45 a bit steep for a very average meal. Only had one choice of table too even though the place was half empty, constant draft every time the door was opened.

This pub is just round the corner for us it’s good food and great service has a nice outdoor garden in the summer

Had a lovely late lunch with friends. Served by Aiden, who was very good at his job. Food was lovely. Service was lovely. Could not fault anything. Definatly a place I would recommend and return.

Amazing is firstly what needs to be said, the food is always lovely no matter what I have eaten there in the past it has always been nice.

Went to this pub for an unplanned lunch. Very friendly staff and welcoming. Excellent food and good choice. Only negative was that it was pretty cold in the restaurant despite the mobile heaters that were in place, but it didn’t ruin our lunch.

Twelve of us for lunch. We have been here on several occasions for lunch and afternoon tea, never again. Our waitress couldn't have cared less, everything too much trouble.

I visit regularly with a group of friends and generally speaking, the food is fairly good quality - better than that found in pub chains. It is rarely busy when we visit, but the wait for food can be long which is annoying. The Christmas offering however was disappointing. Considering that the food had to be pre-ordered, and the restaurant was far from full, the wait time was unacceptable, and my cheesecake wasn’t even fully defrosted when served. It also seemed expensive when compared to Christmas menus offered elsewhere, which is not the case with the regular menu which is reasonably priced. The pub is advertising for kitchen staff, so hopefully things will improve in the near future.

Called in for lunch day after Boxing Day with our grandson. Restaurant very quiet. Ordered our drinks and meals waitress very good. Drinks served promptly but we had a very long wait for our food. What would happen if they were busy when the orders would get very far behind. Food arrived very tasty but the plates were stone cold. I mentioned it to the waitress and her response was I don't know why they are usually very hot. It was a shame after the food was good. Suggest they get more help in the kitchen and get a move on with the orders. Will try it again.

Me and my family walk up to the bread and cheese frequently. When we moved to benfleet 5 year ago the pub wasn’t much to write home about but since Kate and her team have taken over it’s changed so much. For just a drink with the Hubby (Bakewell or strawberry gin is my fave) or dinner with the children there is something for everyone. The menu is varied and we love the sharing plates 3 for £15. The quality of the children’s food is second to none. My dad is very fussy as he eats out frequently but can never fault the food. The cocktails served are lovely especially around Christmas I requested one that wasn’t on the menu (After Eight) and Charlotte whipped one up which was the best I’d ever tasted.

Our family went here for our pre Christmas Sunday lunch. There were 10 of us. We opted for the regular menu rather than the Christmas menu which although only £23.95 pp and good value, we didn’t want to be spending too much money just before Christmas. The place was warm and inviting. The staff weren’t all over you and gave us time to enjoy our food. Everyone enjoyed both their starters and main courses, even the children. It was all presented well and more importantly tasted good. I had their succulent chicken Indiana for my starter and it was really tasty. Although I was very tempted with their tempura squid. I had the chicken roast with all the trimmings. The vegetables weren’t over cooked and mushy as in some places I’ve eaten. I can honestly say I wouldn’t hesitate in going back especially for their Sunday roasts. They also had Fever Tree tonics which was a plus for me! Can’t comment on their desserts as we were all too full from having a starter and main to eat one. My son in law had the stacked burger and it looked amazing. Their whole menu looked good and must have had something to suit everyone’s tastes. Highly recommend.

4 th one I’ve been to and was the best yet , very cosy night with grace Kennedy. We all got a reading which were very accurate, she’s amazing what she knows . Food was fantastic as usual, staff very friendly and on the ball . Great value for money 2 courses and entertainment for under £20 . So lucky to have this gem of a pub on my doorstep. Ten of us had our Christmas meal here on a very busy Saturday evening. The staff were very attentive and the food was excellent. My husband had steak and said it was really good and I had the lamb which was delicious. We thought the meal was good value although the drinks a bit expensive, but overall a really lovely evening.

We ate here as a large family group (13). The service was very good and everyone really enjoyed their food. Highly recommended.

Very expensive for basically a pub ... problems with service not enough staff.. once you get it good and beer ok but not gastropub prices worth 🤔

Sunday dinner for this week and it was brilliant. Staff, venue, food, drinks and vfm all excellent. Lamb shank roast dinner was great, as was toad in the hole. Jaffa cake dessert is fab. Really just like jaffa cakes. Excellent price too. We'll be back....

Lovely food. Great gin menu. Our daughter's chocolate brownie was quickly changed when it appeared a little hard (her nanna's adult portion wasn't). They were very apologetic! Would definitely visit again! Only downside is toilets are clean, but odd smelling. Have noticed this on my previous two visits. Other customers were talking about this in the ladies too.

Came for lunch with my daughter to be told there would be a little wait on food , we ordered 2 sandwiches , these sandwiches took 1hour to arrive !!! There was one person doing the bar and serving food !! Absolutely appalling to wait 1hour for 2 sandwiches , the barman came over after 45 minutes and asked us what we ordered and he would chase it , came back to say it would be 15 minutes , I said we had to leave in 20 minutes as we had an appoint , it arrived 15 mins later!!!! We both didn’t finish as we had to leave as we were late for an appointment, plus the food wasn’t great , there was no apology , no offer of a complimentary drink or refund for the inconvenience and the bad service !!! Terrible service and food !!! 2 guys were sitting at the bar and noticed what was going on and they said it was disgusting the service and that’s why they never order food !!!!

Arrived after a friends funeral for the wake at 11.30 only to be informed that legally no one could enter till 12.00 even after please by the undertaker. On entrance nothing was ready, food not on table and the staff hanging around. Pretty disgusting show of affairs. Hope they are dutifully ashamed for this debacle.

The restaurant area was really cold, the chicken supreme very poor quality (dry chicken, undercooked and horribly garlicky dauphinois potatoes and a split sauce) and no one asked how the food was once served. The burgers and jacket potato were nice though. Pity as the Sunday lunches I’ve had here before were lovely, but this was a real let down and has put me off returning.

Went to this pub with a group of friends and was very disappointed at the standard of the food, the waitress was friendly enough when she eventually arrived and food was brought to table in a reasonable time, however, the dishes were not very hot, in fact the whitebait was stone cold. This was my first visit to the pub and I shall not be returning.

First visit to the Bread and Cheese for Sunday lunch. We both had the lamb shank which was mouth watering. All the vegetables and potatoes (cooked in goose fat) were excellent. Staff very friendly. The puddings were welll presented and very tasty.

Spur of the moment decision to visit this venue mid-afternoon and great that we got a table straight away. Lovely to have a guy on a Guitar playing Ed Sheeran type stuff in the background to add to the atmosphere.

Last minute booking on a Tuesday evening and restaurant was surprisingly empty, only a couple of other tables were occupied, but it was early evening. Waitress was lovely and very attentive and helpful, especially as my sister could not decide what to order as so much to choose from. We had starters and main courses and we couldn't fault any of the food. Will definitely be going back.

Really surprised the inside belies the interior excellent lunch spot on service will return wouldn’t hesitate to recommend

First visit to this pub/restaurant and will be my last. My sister in law was recommended this establishment by her daughter , but we were both disappointed on our luncheon visit.The premises are very modern and dining area clean and bright.Whilst we were waiting to be seated we noticed that there were four people eating and one of the party was eating Lasagne, chips and side salad.We both agreed that the lasagne looked good.So when our food order was taken we both ordered Lasagne.Big mistake .The meal was very dry ,stodgy and lacked meat..We both struggled to eat the meal and left a third of it.When it came to pay the bill we mentioned our dissatisfaction with the lasagne to the waitress .She said she would tell the chef.After a few minutes she came out with no apology and stated that the lasagne was fresh and that was the way the chef cooked it.I am a big believer in customer service and in this case there was not any in these circumstances.

Not the most difficult thing to get right perhaps but amazing how many pubs do.

Popped in with my daughter...I had prawn baguette and she had chicken wrap (hold everything except lettuce!) Food was great, better than expected in pleasant surroundings and reasonable price

Am a regular here not just because it’s close to where I live but it’s such a welcoming bar/restaurant with a good bunch of friendly staff. Dogs are also welcome which is lovely as he don’t get left at home. Beautiful garden area which is great in the summer. Food is stunning and fresh never had a bad meal. Only down side is the big Millwall sign above the bar... no one likes them! (Jokes) in general lovely place highly recommend!

We have been a few times, when visiting friends in Benfleet. Decor is nice and staff are friendly. Food was very good. Highly recommend for a drink, meal or both!

Have recently been to B&C; pub a few times for dinner, Sunday lunch and midweek lunch with friends. All meals were excellent! Very good service and nice atmosphere inside and lovely big seated beer garden area outside. Would highly recommend this venue for any occasion. The Sunday lunches are superb!

7 of us arrived at 8.15 to order food to be told restaurant had closed then got chucked out of the garden by 10...last bell was rung at 10.30 and lights were being switched off and clearing up around us...this was on a Thursday evening! Quite apparent the staff wanted to finish early hence to say will not return!

I have been here twice and both times staff have been rude. The second time they whispered and stared, and my friends (the only ones in the bar) were made to feel very uncomfortable, awkward and upset. This is not acceptable in any establishment, especially since the place and the food are excellent.

After a visit to a relative in a nearby care home to-day my sister and I decided to try the pub for lunch. The early signs were not encouraging as a new staff member struggled with the lunch order on the the POS, wasn't exactly customer focussed and said we couldn't pay for drinks and the meal together when we asked.

This is a local pub to us and we have had a few quick meals in here recently.

We went last Sunday, with friends & had an amazing Sunday lunch. Really good value for money, good service & excellent car park.

There is something on the menu for everyone, and the food is really good and cooked fresh, something that isn’t always a guarantee in a pub restaurant. The desserts in particular are really good! Definitely worth a visit.

Popped in as a last minute decision one Saturday around 530. No problem getting a table as very few in restaurant with more eating outside on a sunny afternoon. Service was friendly and reasonably quick and our food was delicious. My lamb was nice and tender and very well cooked

Came here for Sunday lunch service very very poor they seem to employ youngsters on Sunday that don’t have a clue potatoes were clearly sitting around all day as they were rock hard and grey inside and as for the deserts which were supposed to be peach cheescake just slopped in a glass with no taste whatsoever same went for the rhubarb crumble very slap dash a child could prepare better not a cheap meal either very very poor we gave them a second chance after having the same service a year ago and nothing has changed Clearly this restaurant has massive problems and are ripping people off with these prices for food which is terrible would never recommend this restaurant would have been better off with a take away .

Had a really nice Sunday Lunch with a generous serving of lovely roast beef BUT the veggies were a bit tasteless and the roast potatoes were awful - they were overcooked and when you tried to put your fork in them they just shattered, think they must have been frozen and not fresh. We ordered an extra portion as my hubby loves roasties and he left them all!!! Have to say the sticky toffee pudding was one of the best I have tasted.

Stopped in with my husband and children. Service was friendly, restaurant was very cute. The Food was AMAZING!!!! I have the 3 small plates for £15 as a main yum! children’s meals are a good size, Freshly made pizza and chips. My husband had a massive pie, which looked lush.

Our first time here and the first impression was that the staff were not friendly. We arrived as they opened and the floor had not been cleaned as there was crumbs under the table.

First time at The Bread and Cheese service was great from the minute we arrived we didn’t book but we were able to get a table ..The food was excellent atmosphere was fab a young man singing and playing a guitar was lovely.we loved the friendliness of the staff .We don’t live in the area so it was nice to find a friendly place we highly recommend. The Bread ans Cheese to any one .

Came for Sunday lunch as heard good things about the new and improved Bread and Cheese ! Not sure about that ...the beef was super and the Yorkshire but the potatoes were awful inedible if I had not been hungry actually the other Veg were ok but all already put on the plate . Also not sure about the shabby chic look I like my tables to stay together . It was ok but probably won’t go back on a Sunday will be more inclined to try a week day when it may well be much improved ...will let you know

Second time I have come in a week. This is my local and I have been here regularly however, the poor service and attitude of the staff means I won't be coming back in a rush.

Came here with my 72 year old dad who doesn't get out very often only to be greeted with miserable, unhelpful and very unfriendly staff. The service was poor and slow. Real shame.

My partner and I came here to eat this week after a bad experience at another local place and were pleasantly surprised as we were only expecting normal pub style food. The staff greeted us as if they had known us a while and actually wanted us there. We were offered a choice of seating in a brightly lit comfortable setting away from the bar. Our aperitifs were brought to us promptly and my negroni was delicious with plenty of gin and martini and ice. You'd be surprised how many bars these days have young staff who don't even know how to make drinks. Anyway we ordered halloumi starters which were delicious and some other bits and bobs you would expect from a pub menu. The mains we ordered came out promptly and were more than satisfying. But more than anything it was the quality of the service and the atmosphere that made our evening. We decided to stay for more drinks and taxi home as they really know how to make a drink. Anyway all in all a very nice evening to relax after a stressful week and as far as a pub meal goes you can't really get better than this. I've been to restaurants lately that don't even come close to this humble public house. It's knows what it is, it's not pretentious and the staff are experienced and friendly , what more could you ask for. Thank you for a lovely evening we will certainly be returning soon.

We had not been to the Bread and Cheese for many years and did not rate it as much more than a pub that did a bit of food. We therefore called in for a pub lunch. We found it had completely changed and has been turned into a nicely decorated restaurant with a comprehensive and interesting menu.
