I love what my family calls the secret cafe, and hope they reopen after lockdown. I did live in Germany for 5 years and am very happy to be able to catch up on my favourite food. Always clean and tidy and friendly staff, and the curry wurst & pommel are perfect!

We came last year and we were bowled over by this place.. So we came back so glad we did. The lady who seems to own the cafe is so friendly. Our dog Paddy was with us so we asked if it would be okay for him to come in. Yes no problem (then she brought him a fresh bowl of water and a beautiful cut up sausage). We all decided to go for the full English with fried bread (the best fried bread ever). The only part of the breakfast I could fault was the tinned tomato otherwise it was just outstanding. We had a pot of tea for two fresh orange juice coffee. When we came to pay the bill was £21 just unbelievable for this quality and service. Although it's not posh or upmarket it's clean and the owner deserves all the support anyone can give. We shall be back once more before we return home. We never go back anywhere twice but this is one exception.

This place is my go to joint when I fancy a bit more than the norm for breakfast.Great quality food is served and in a decently spaced and relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for a small group of friends or as a casual date idea. Prices can be a little steep as things like chips are expensive and unfortunately not a great size serving, however they are fresh cooked and the rest of the menu provides a nice choice of German as well as other cuisine. One of the practices I like is paying when I have eaten as it allows for extra ordering etc. Staff are all very pleasant and happy to help, service is adequate givin the time it takes to cook meals. Also there are toys for toddlers and younger kids to keep occupied whist waiting so that is ideal for small families (2 children) in my opinion.

We are local to this area and The Bread Bowl Cafe has always been somewhere that has intrigued us. It looks lovely and authentic from the outside, however the moment we walked through the door we regretted our decision to eat there. First of all the stale stench that hits you as you walk in is vile. It smells of dirty deep fat fryers that haven’t had the oil changed in 30 years. The smell remained deep in our nostrils throughout the meal, and deep in our clothes, hair and pram long after we left. The high char was dirty; the decor was scratty, both meals were disgusting and the coffees tasted of salt. I literally cannot believe this place is still open. Who on earth have left these good reviews on trip advisor!?

Beautiful food, everything you could want if your a fan of German food. A master stroke setting up in close to the garrison where a lot of BAOR Veterans have settled. If you haven’t tried this place, what are you waiting for? It’s the best Snelly outside Germany.

I enjoyed my food here, I had schnitzel and my wife had gyros. We have previously lived in Germany for 7 years prior to moving to the area and found this nice little cafe, from the outside the 🇩🇪 themed cafe was very welcoming. Once inside, the decor really let's the cafe down, unfortunately it looks tired and slightly scruffy, it was a hot day and there was no air conditioning or a fan in sight. Overall I would go in there to eat again, if I fancied German food but with a overhaul of the interior, I would easily give the cafe a 4/5* rating. If the inside had a Bavaria style theme, I'm sure it would excel.

I was recommended this eatery on a post on Facebook. A cafe that serves authentic german food, in North Yorkshire ! When you enter the cafe it doesn't look like it serves german food in fact it is pretty much non discript, it was very busy when we entered and we ended up sharing a table with another couple. Now some of you readers are probably wondering why german food, as an ex serviceman I was introduced to german food whilst on postings in Germany , now Richmond is very close to Catterick a garrison town so there explains why Lynnete the cafe owner diversified and started serving authentic german food next to traditional English fayre, and it really does work, Lynnete an ex servicemans daughter has really captured a niche market and has done so with great success. I really recommend this cafe to anyone wishing to try something uniquely different or those who want to wonder down memory lane, serving schnitzel, bratwurst and frikadellen all served with red salt seasoned fries and washed down with authentic german bier then get down to the bread bowl you will definitely not be disappointed.

My son told me about this cafe. We had lived in Germany for 20 years and since returning to the UK in 1996 we had all missed our visits to the "schnelly" so we decided to travel over to Richmond this afternoon to check the place out. We both had gyros pitta mit pommes served with bottles of mayo and curry sauce on the table. It was fantastic and definitely worth the 100 mile round trip. My other half said he hadn't tasted a gyros like it since we left Germany. He polished his off in record time and finished off mine as there was just too much on the plate for me. We are going again for the Jager and Zigeuner schnitzels. My only complaint, and it's a small one is that the young lad serving us was maybe too attentive. I just wanted to stuff my face, not to assure him that everything was ok every few minutes. I know some people like attentive staff but I just loved my food too much to appreciate it.

I visited today with my dad. My dad & mum lived in Berlin and I went to Windsor Boys School in Hamm, West Germany 1967-1968. Unfortunately I'm now vegetarian so couldn't renew my love of German sausages. The lady who runs the restaurant went to Windsor Girls School told me that she served Quorn burgers in a burger bun. I ordered one and got two burgers with salad. I also ordered pomme frites (so tasty). Complete with authentic German curry ketchup & mayonnaise. To go with it I had a Dortmunder Beer. My dad had chicken & sweet corn soup with bread bun - big chunks of chicken - and a coffee. Will call in again with my daughter next time.

Attentive and welcoming staff tick all the boxes, making this the ideal place to eat for us. The couple of negative reviews below, are certainly not the Bread Bowl that we know and use.

Ignore the unfair reviews previous. Obviously never been to Germany, i lived there for 14 years. I found this little Cafe very interesting with a excellent choice on the menu with both German and British food which again you see alot of in Germany offering both. With me was my 1 Year old Daughter (Food critic), 5 Year old son (Fussy eater) and myself. I had the Bratwurst mit Pommes which was perfect. My daughter has an omelette, a little one specially prepared for her personally by the chef. She ate the lot which says alot too. Amy my little fussy eater had the Beefburger form the children's menu, which he thoroughly enjoyed eating the lot.The staff were very friendly and efficient even although the Cafe was full.Overall a great Cafe with great food and great staff giving an enjoyable atmosphere. We will be returning more regularly.Outstanding. 5*+

My girlfriend and I have been together for 2 years and eat out regularly, always wanting to try new places. I also used to live in Richmond and have always been intrigued by this place. Unfortunately without a doubt our trip to The Bread Bowl was the worst meal we have ever had. The place looks inviting enough from the outside - a chalkboard, couple of German flags and a picture of a fat chef make you want to walk right in. However, step inside and you will think you have gone in through the wrong door. Whatever you are imagining the place looks like on the inside right now, you cannot be further from the truth. We were gobsmacked. I am struggling to find the words to do justice to the moribund atmosphere and neglected, dingy decor. There is nothing German about it either. Likening it to a run down cafe at the back of a charity shop would be a compliment. Uncomfortable chairs, dirty table cloths, dog-eared menus, at least 5 different types of light fittings, an oversized children's play area...it has to be seen to be believed. I cannot understand how this place survived the recession. Not ones to judge on appearances, we trusted the 5 star reviews on TripAdvisor, took our seats and ordered some food from the German menu and a couple of lattes. And when it came it was disgusting. Overly salty, microwaved fast food at its worst. The lattes were served in chipped mugs and were equally horrible - clearly made from a packet. My girlfriend ordered a salad with her meal - this consisted of iceberg lettuce, 2 slices of cucumber and 2 slices of tomato, with no dressing. If this is your idea of a salad, you may find something to enjoy here. The speed of service and friendly lad who served us were the only positives, hence the one star. I am very suspicious of the authenticity of the 5-star reviews. Avoid.

I was really looking forward to visiting this cafe after reading the positive reviews on here!! What a mistake! It started off well enough, the cafe looked quite inviting from the outside. Inside was a completely different story, it was dingy, grubby and tired looking. After waiting for the staff to look up from his laptop we ordered lamb gyros, salad and pommes. Having spent time in Germany we were willing to overlook the tired interior and eagerly awaited the arrival of our food. Several pings of the microwave later and our food arrived Luke warm and completely underwhelmed us. What was most surprising was the Yorkshire Stottie it arrived in. Since when was that of german origin!! This place could be absolutely fantastic right in the centre of an army garrison where people enjoy good quality german HOMECOOKED food. I certainly won't be going back in a hurry!!

We had heard of this place so decided to visit. Certainly not disappointed with what we ate there.Portions were plenty big enough and washed down with more than an ample amount of tea which got replenished without a prompt from us. A more comprehensive German menu containing pork knuckle, sauerbraten etc would have been nice but what there is is fine. The service was excellent and friendly and that goes a long way.

My partner and I were in Richmond for a weekend and, seeking something for supper, were starting to think it would be a choice between steaks, pizzas, chinese or curry. Then we found The Bread Bowl. We'd both eaten more than enough of the kind of food that is all too common in English restaurants and pubs and, the idea of a German meal was very attractive indeed when we found The Bread Bowl. We saw that it was 'bring your own bottle' and made appropriate arrangements: we bought a bottle of wine at the Co-op in the Market Square, and were made most welcome when we returned to the Bread Bowl. We were given wine glasses and there was no charge for corkage. Viv had Jager Schnitzel, I had the Gyros Kebab. Both were delicous. I admit, not Michelin star catering, but the food was just what we were looking for - large portions and attentive service.Touches like the mustard mayo and curry ketchup made it work.We did buy mineral waters as well, but at just over £16 for the two of us the meal was a real bargain. Elsewhere in Richmond we would have had to pay upwards of £40 for a meal we could have bought anywhere.Sooner or later someone will open a restaurant on the Kings Road selling exactly this type of food and will charge £50 a head or more. The Bread Bowl is a real find, do go there and enjoy something different.

Today my two sisters and I visited the Bread Bowl Cafe in Richmond, North Yorkshire. I had been told about the place from a friend at work. It was fantastic. They serve Gyros, Bratwurst and the best chips this side of Texas. They have a bigger menu and also do take away foods, but we went specifically for the German cuisine. We had Currywurst & Chips with authentic German Curry Ketchup and the best mayonnaise in the world. The chips had the traditional German paprika coating. The staff were brilliant and very attentive. I phoned a friend whilst there to tell her and I was bringing a menu and price list back so we will be doing a works outing within the next two weeks.... It is a little gem of a place and I will be going as often as I can get there. If you have been or served in Germany you will enjoy your visit too. It is just out of the market square heading towards the big COOP..... Opposite the gardens....DO enjoy.....

Stumbled on this little eatery while visiting Knaresborough on a Sunday lunch time. We went in to get maybe a sandwich and thought it wasn’t going to be great to be honest but ended up having a cooked lunch and it was so good! The place was busy and you could tell they were locals as they were chatting across to each other. We looked at the menu and decided to have have a cooked meal. I ordered pie chips and peas and my husband a burger with chips salad and coleslaw and a pot of tea. You could actually get a 3 course Sunday lunch for £14.50! When mine came there were no peas but another bowl soon arrived full of fresh vegetables and a big jug of gravy. Food was really good the staff were lovely. The lady said that as she had been cooking Sunday lunches she gave me some of the veg. We were thoroughly impressed and wouldn’t hesitate to visit again. Great food and great value for money! Definitely worth trying!
