The Bowl Inn in South Gloucestershire

We had been here before and the food was ok. However on this occasion it was not good at all. We (10 of us) suspect the kitchen was the problem as the serving staff seemed to be trying. 4 dishes were very dry, but we didn’t realise the tahini dressing was missing until they were half eaten In addition no salad cream on one dish or chicken cracking. They brought out some supposed salad cream that turned out to be ….well we’re not sure what it was. But it wasn’t salad cream. The sharing board at £32 was extremely dried out. The crackling was inedible. It was so hard and even if it was perfect, definitely wasn’t worth £32. We were a refunded for 4 of the dishes, but only when we pushed. In fairness, we should’ve pushed more because it was overall very disappointing.

We had a lovely stay at The Bowl Inn again. The room had fantastic original features and was clean, comfortable and well maintained. The staff were welcoming and helpful and the breakfast was fabulous as usual.

Not a great experience... it took three attempts to produce a bitter shandy, after the first attempt you'd think staff would have checked the lemonade was now lemonade not soda. Took 30 minutes to get a drink.. The food was pitiful. Long wait, though not that busy.. 13 pounds for a microwaved small tart and a tiny bit of salad.. which was advertised as a quiche... no goats cheese in sight, abt 5 mm thick filling, and I swear it had salmon in it.. no spring veg or egg in sight. Shocking.

Sadly, as a fan of Butcombe hotels, I have to leave a poor review. Despite the friendly staff, nothing went well for our one night stay. It started in the restaurant, admittedly on a busy day the service at dinner was very slow. We were told that rump steak was off the menu, then that it was on again. The steak itself was good but a side order of green vegetables in season was made up of two types of cabbage, not really a good accompaniment for steak. The room itself was fine but the en-suite was very small. Later at about midnight the fire alarm went off. We trudged down in pajamas and were eventually told it was an alarm fault and they had to switch it off. Breakfast in the morning started well enough with an apology for what had gone before, but then after ordering the full breakfast we were told that there was no bacon. A pretty basic requirement. I ordered an extra sausage, but both of the sausages were flowery and tough, making me wonder if they were re- heated. It is reasonable to hope for much better and perhaps more than just an apology. However we left promptly because we just wanted to get out of there.

It's a lovely pub and the service is always great but they're really getting five stars for having Goram IPA zero on tap! Will be back soon

I booked The Bowl Inn for a business meeting for some colleagues and have used it several times now as the location works really well for people travelling from different parts of the country. The venue offers relaxed and quiet surroundings in which to hold informal business meetings and we will definitely be using again in the future.

We had 1 night at the Bowl Inn on our way North, it was lovely. The area is quiet, the pub is cute and clean. The room was beautiful and had a large comfy bed. The shower was awesome. The atmosphere in the pub was really nice, friendly staff wonderful food. Breakfast was great with the best coffee I'd had in weeks.

The room was expensive for one night. I booked 2 double rooms: one for me and my husband and one for my husbands brother They put me and my husband in the smallest room. No room at all. No dressing table. The lamps on the bedside tables were huge and left no space to put anything on. My brother in laws room was bigger with a dressing table and chair. Basically we felt cramped in our room. The food wasn’t great and the service wasn’t warm . Appeared disinterested. Wouldn’t recommend. Shame because it was next to a beautiful church and the area was nice

Booked for Sunday lunch for my partners 60th birthday. Can honestly say it was the best Sunday Roast we have ever had in a pub. The service, food and atmosphere was outstanding. A definite 10/10 from us - can’t wait yonreturn

A great place for a stopover heading to West Country but also proper local pub in a nice village. But just as good for a Sunday lunch. Service first rate.

Stayed visiting family in village, Impeccably clean en suite room Very comfortable bed with good quality linen. Fresh milk supplied in a small thermos to avoid UHT in tea and coffee . Breakfast - good choice, well cooked.

We enjoyed a family dinner from the supper menu early Saturday evening. Restaurant not busy at that time. Food was good. As a vegetarian I would have preferred to have real and not vegan cheese in risotto.

We have been here a few times before and it is always lovely, We had a great meal and a few drinks, the food was excellent, the staff are always super friendly and the service was great, we will definitely be back.

This inn was a great place to stay! The staff were super-friendly, the food was genuinely exceptional, and the room was comfortable. The area around the pub, ancient church and lovely elevated views across the Severn are also nice.

Lovely old inn located in pretty village. Superior plus room was charming and cosy with a very large bed. Ground coffee and cafetière in room. Good food, breakfast options somewhat limited but good. Tasty beer. All staff very helpful, friendly and attentive.

Lovely place to stay and in a very good location. Couldn't get breakfast to go as advertised as I was leaving at 6 am, so I can't comment on the food this time, but I've eaten here before and the evening meals are lovely.

Stayed in the hotel and found everything to be excellent, the staff were very helpful and friendly. Also ate in the pub and the food was excellent quality. In all a great stay and a great experience. The breakfast also was very good!

Discovering this pub was a joy last weekend. The staff are very friendly and the beer is great. The breakfast was especially delicious - the best eggs hollandaise I've had in a long time. It's amazing to think the pub is so close to the motorway and yet you feel like you're in the middle of the countryside. Excellent stay.

Really enjoyed our overnight stay at this lovely quaint hotel in a beautiful, quiet location. We had both dinner and breakfast which we thoroughly enjoyed. All staff warm, welcoming and friendly. Car parking seamless. Had a very restful stay with our dog whonwas equally made welcome.

Bowl inn hosted our large family gathering today and did a brilliant job. 17 of us ranging from 4 to 82 years old. As you would expect for such a large group we pre-ordered which so simple to do and well communicated. The food & drink was excellent. The venue was welcoming and cosy (I don’t mean cramped as loads of space). The biggest credit though were the staff who were just fabulous and ensured we had an amazing evening. Highly recommend this pub.

Great stay at the Bowl Inn. Delicious food and nice atmosphere. It is dificult to get there without a car (~10 min walk from the bus that may be difficult if you have a heavy luggage). A free parking is avaliable otherwise.

Just had dinner here. They forgot one of the kids meals. Didn't provide the drink with the other. Also offered curry or peas with the fish and although we asked for pea didn't receive either. The girls at the cashier just said sorry and didn't offer any discount for the peas saying "we don't actually charge for the peas" if it's part of the meal then of course it is charged for. Service is terrible.

Came for an anniversary dinner. The staff were all very friendly and service was all good. But they had nothing available; honestly half the menu was out of stock. My wife couldn’t have any of her top 3 choices. Even ketchup was out of stock. And the £36 ribeye was unfortunately just not cooked very well, with a big grey band and raw middle.

A charming, historic and very busy inn run by a very helpful and wonderful friendly staff. We met friends for a long overdue catch-up and an overnight stay and couldn’t have found anywhere more suitable. We were “agreeably drunk and well fed up” and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. At a time when local pubs seem under threat it was good to find one that was thriving and offering something for all ages, from small babies to wrinklies at the other end of the age spectrum. A big thank you to all the staff.

We had Sunday lunch with friends. The food was excellent and the restaurant very comfortable. It’s a genuine old inn with lots of original features and bags of character. Service was very friendly but a little slow on the day we visited.

A lovely tradional pub with a cosy bar and comfortable restaurant. Staff were professional and helpful, if a little overworked! Our room had a nice feel, was warm and clean with a fab view across the River Severn in the distance. The local village was picturesque and had a lovely community shop with friendly staff.

As always this a great place to eat and stay we had the roast and it was fantastic can't wait for the next time

**Review is for hotel and restaurant- both were equally bad** I often travel to Bristol for work but have never stayed at the Bowl Inn before. Check in was fine. I dealt with a lovely girl at the bar who showed me to my room and offered to carry my case etc. The room was small and I would say “rustic” but appeared clean. The bathroom could do with an update and a good clean. The sink was smashed and the hand wash and hand cream bottles were dirty. On arrival I looked out of some French doors and they opened out onto the pub garden/terrace. I checked the doors and they were unlocked. As a female staying on her own, it was lucky i checked. I had to go back down to the bar and the same lovely girl found a key and came and secured the doors. I then went down for dinner. I ordered the fish and chips. I can honestly say these were the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. The batter was thick, incredibly greasy and rock hard. I had to peel it off and the fish inside had no flavor what so ever. The chips were also rock hard and greasy. The food came out in less than 5 minutes so I can only assume it had been reheated and that’s why it went so hard and greasy. It certainly wasn’t fresh food. The waiter asked me how my meal was. I explained I was disappointed with it. He apologized and offered me a free dessert. He handed me a spoon which still had someone’s left over dinner on it.. the dessert itself was lovely. I then returned to my room as I had some work to do and realized the WiFi didn’t stretch to the room and I also didn’t have any signal so once in the room was in total technology blackout which is not ideal when working or have family at home. When I got into bed and went to turn the light off, I found a little pile of some else’s dirty fingernails on the bedside table. All in all a horrendous stay. I wouldn’t return to eat or stay and wouldn’t recommend it as you can get a room at the Aztec or Village for the same price and has a double bed/wifi/gym etc. This room was massively overpriced

Great place to stay, off the main road so very quiet, the evening meal was both delicious and reasonably priced. Our room was welcoming, comfortable bed and crisp white bedding. Everything we needed was provided. Breakfast the following morning was again delicious, good quality food. Friendly staff and attentive to their guests. Will definitely return 🙌

The food was good quality but we waited for nearly 2 hours to get the main course, sat down at 2pm and received our food at 3.45pm. Lovely pub though.

I loved their Sticky Figgy Pudding!

We had a lovely lunch, food was excellent with great service. Only small down side was the fact they did not have any dessert spoons so we were given soup spoons. Soup spoons were not the right utensil to eat dessert especially ice cream served in narrow glasses.

Staying overnight I had a medical problem. The staff and customers were amazing with their help and assistance before the paramedics arrived. A big thank you to you all. Keith

Great clean rooms, fantastic food.

Met some friends for lunch. Very very disappointed with our meal. Hardly any fish inside the greasy batter. Minted peas mashed and dried up. Charged £8.50 for a desert of three tiny plum halves with a teaspoon of ‘cream’ and a sprinkling of crumbs. Disgraceful. £6.50 for one scoop ful of ice cream. Then had the cheek to add £13 service charge on the bill. Will not be returning!!

Had a midweek dinner with a friend and was surprised how busy it was, considering its tucked away location. Food and service were excellent. Would definitely go back.

Great 80th birthday meal. Nice table in alcove, staff made a fuss of the birthday girl. Good, busy atmosphere. Food did take a while to come because of this - but we were not in a rush. Helped with birthday cake candles etc - which was appreciated. Food is good, fish stew, venison faggots and homemade meaty pies. I had the chicken supreme- which was £20 - for that price I do feel it should have included some vegetables- only a few potatoes. Overall well done

Everything about tonight was perfect. A really warm welcome the minute I walked in to check if it was ok to bring our 3 Labs in whilst we dined. They couldn’t have made our family (including the dogs!) more welcome. The meal was superb - we had 3 course meals and each dish was beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were all very pleasant and attentive. Lovely pub with a lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend and very much hope to return soon. Thank you for making it a delightful experience!

Had a very enjoyable meal from a more unusual menu which persuaded us to try something new. Excellent Parking and easy to get to, and lovely staff who worked hard to ensure good service.

My husband and I enjoyed a birthday celebration meal at The Bowl. The reception on arrival was warm and friendly and we were shown to our table immediately. The waiting staff were attentive and the menu varied and interesting, the seafood stew was excellent. We didn’t partake desert as two courses was enough for us. Overall a lovely relaxed meal in a gorgeous setting. Thank you.

Lovely pub in a quaint little village. Been twice - first time had a really nice roast, but more recently went on a weekday evening and had a gnocchi dish which was pretty awful. It's one of those where I wished I had asked to swap it after it came out, and it was unbelievably overpriced for what it was. Gnocchi was rubbery, mushrooms not fresh and a funny taste to it, can get such better gnocchi in local Italian restaurants for cheaper. I would go back but would probably stick to the more classic pub food dishes. Lovely place for a pint

We had an excellent evening meal . Worth getting a Butcombe loyalty card . The fish and chips was first class and it was the best burger that I’ve had in a while . It’s a delightful proper pub and really worth a visit . If you like real Ale that’s terrific too.

The Bowl is set in a very pretty village and was conveniently located near to the Almondsbury junction of the M5. When I arrived around 5pm, the pub was quite busy with early evening drinkers. The pub had a nice relaxed atmosphere and I was looking forward to dinner later. My room was nicely appointed but had tiny bathroom with a very tight shower cubicle. Unfortunately, as the room was located above the bar, it was quiet noisy until closing time. The front of the pub is illuminated throughout the night and, despite the heavy curtains to the window, a lot of light came into the room. When I returned to the bar a short while later for an early evening (and well earned) beer, it became apparent that, whilst the staff were very pleasant, there was a lack of training or expertise. It’s frustrating when you stand at a bar with 5 members of staff in a huddle around a laptop and you can’t get served. In the end, after a few minutes, I had to ask if there was a chance of being served! Dinner was a huge disappointment. The restaurant was very busy and quite loud with a 30-something fellow diner and the next table who obviously wanted everyone to hear what he had to say. The menu was quite limited and so I chose the Brixham Market fish stew. I asked the waitress what it contained but she had no idea but returned from the kitchen with the answer: haddock, prawns and mussels. I was completely shocked when my meal arrived a few minutes later which automatically made me question the process in the kitchen. The dish was disappointing with a heavy tomato base which killed any flavours. I think Brixham Market would be disappointed, as I was, that haddock was the only fish on offer! I would suggest that the tiny pieces of overcooked haddock were trimmings from the fish preparation. The saffron potatoes were completely smothered in the heavy sauce so it was impossible to taste the delicate flavour of saffron. Out of the 8 mussels, one was empty, two had barely opened and one looked very suspect. Again, staff training was lacking: no receptacle for my muscle shells, no finger bowl which was essential with the tomato gloop and nobody asked if everything was ok. The man who I would assume was in charge, had an irritating habit of stroking his beard which, in a restaurant, was quite unpleasant. Nobody enquired if they could get me anything else so retired back to the bar for coffee. Breakfast was a bit of a shambles: there was no coffee available as the machine had been ‘turned off’. Eventually, as I finished my breakfast, I received a fairly disgusting cup of coffee (the Illy Rep would go mad). Breakfast was basic with a poor choice on offer: no fruit or cereal, croissant or additional toast or preserves. Throughout my experience of the Bowl Inn, the staff were charming but, unfortunately, charm isn’t enough when training is lacking and the staff haven’t got a clue about service. Unfortunately, I would not return.

We all enjoyed an excellent meal on 21 Jan. The service was great and nothing was too much trouble. Already recommending considerable improvements to service and menus to other friends.

I was staying alone so booked the snug room and was pleasantly surprised, lovely decor, great amenities. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was delicious. All in all was such a pleasant stay

Another brilliant lunch at the bowl! The lamb scotch egg is an absolute favourite every time we go now!

Great roast - big portion, fantastic vege, huge Yorkshire pud. I had tri of meats - beef a bit tough and chicken boney - but the portion size, sauces and gravy made up for it. cauliflower cheese was extra but nice. Gravy really good - extra would have been ideal. Had the Sticky figgy pudding for dessert - it was delicious. Took a while but all in all great roast and would return. Good service. Dogs welcome.

We had a brilliant stay at the Bowl Inn. Rooms were very comfortable and cosy, and had lovely decoration. Ahead of the visit, the staff were very accommodating and able to provide a ground floor double room for my elderly parents. (Note: there is only one ground floor double room so do ask for it if you need it) Breakfast in the morning was amazing with a great selection (yogurt, full breakfasts, eggs Benedict, shakshuka etc.). They were again very accommodating and able to provide items off menu. We also had dinner there one evening and the food was amazing. Would recommend the venison steak, mushroom gnocchi and rump steak (both steaks were very tender), as well as the sticky figgy pudding. Location was good for exploring the Wye Valley and Bristol. All in all a very pleasant stay and we would look to come back and/or visit another inn in the same group.

We stayed for a couple of nights at the inn and had an evening meal there on our first night. The staff were very friendly, attentive and helpful throughout, and put a lot of effort in to ensuring our stay was as comfortable as possible. We all enjoyed our food at evening meal on first night, with their being a great range of dishes using local produce and good vegetarian/ vegan options, plus a good selection of wines and ales. The venison steak and mushroom gnocchi were particular highlights. We also had breakfast both mornings which was a lovely treat, with a wide range of options available and the staff very flexible in accommodating various dietary requirements of one of our party. The rooms were very comfortable and nicely appointed. Overall a fantastic stay and we definitely would come back if in the area in future.

We had Friday lunch in the restaurant area. It was surprisingly quiet but the service was pretty good. The food however was disappointing. Loaded hash browns were straight out of a packet into the deep fat fryer and not very ‘loaded’. Scant portions of avocado, tomatoes and pink onions.

An old haunt of mine over 30 years ago. Back in the UK over this past weekend I was so happy to find the place still as charming as ever. Friendly staff, great food and an excellent selection of food and the most charming accomodation. To top it all, they manage to serve a fantastic breakfast choice in a relaxing manner - not the stressed and loud buffé synonamous with some places. Top notch, The Bowl!

Terrible….. one bar person trying to book in hotel guests, make coffee’s, serve drinks and take guests money for food and drinks. How on earth can you run this country pub in this way. Butcombe seriously need to look at themselves on there policy with staff issues… probably will not return !!!!!!!!

We stayed at the Bowl Inn overnight in order to enjoy Thatchers Amor on draft (a rarity) so we booked a table in the evening too. The rooms were clean and everything we needed. The room was on a bed and breakfast basis so we actually had two meals there. We couldn't fault the quality of the food, we each ordered different things and everything that arrived was fantastic. I also have to mention the really friendly service, nothing was too much trouble and the staff really made our stay a stand-out experience. Thank you so much, we can't wait to return.

Really quite disappointed after our most recent visit. Some family members stopped by last week and said they were blown away by how wonderful it was, so we all decided to come back last night for a family meal. Upon arrival, the waitress informed us that 4 of the dishes were not available; this was a huge chunk of the menu and left very little to choose from. We then asked for a mulled wine, which we were told was no longer available - 3 days after Christmas. When the food arrived, it sadly did not live up to any kind of expectations. The potatoes were dry and tasted like they’d been reheated, the pie was bland and the risotto tasted like baby food with no flavour. No one returned to ask how the food was, so we had no opportunity to share the disappointment. We asked to see a dessert menu, which was forgotten about and had to go up to the bar to request this. We then ordered coffees with our desserts which came out considerably later, and with no sugar. To which we again asked for, and were not given leaving the coffees to go cold. It was not particularly busy so I cannot understand this. I am so sad to be writing this review, as we were all really excited to visit this beautifully decorated pub, but sadly won’t be returning.

We visited on 28th December for lunch having booked many months ago. It was a special lunch reuniting with a friend in Bristol. We looked at the menu and asked for three fish and chips but we were told there was only one fish as the days delivery had not turned up. We asked instead for two burgers and the one fish but were told only one burger for the same reason. We had the two available meals and I ordered a brunch meal which was ok but not outstanding. While we were eating we watched many portions of fish and chips being delivered to large tables of people who we assume had pre-ordered! Disappointing as if there was a shortage of food then surely a first come first served might have been fairer? We’ve visited at Christmas a few times now and usually we are very pleased with the food here but this visit made a feel less important than larger parties even though the booking was made many months ago.

I was rather hoping you would not ask. Booked lunch for 28Th December for 5. Not impressed. Our waitress was rude and disinterested. Immediately informed us in a very defensive manner that they had run out of all burger dishes and fish dishes on the menu. This left a choice of steak, a chicken dish and a vegetarian dish. One us chose steak… only rump steak on the menu. Two chose chicken. One the vegetarian. Waitress reappeared and told us no steak left. Went off, and back in a couple of minutes and said they had found a steak. The steak was the only dish that was pleasant. Vegetarian dish was watery and the chicken dish was very dry and cold. The waitress continued to be rude and abrupt and became sarcastic when we asked if there was anything on the dessert menu that we could not order. Portions tiny for the price and not worth the money at all. The only saving Grace was that it was a very dog friendly pub which is why we chose it. Dogs were obviously more welcome than humans. ( The choice of main dish at lunch is abysmal. I love fish, but the only fish on offer was haddock which I dislike. ). We won’t be coming back to this pub which is a shame. It has the potential to be lovely.

I can only base my rating on meeting family there for lunch, having had it recommended. We booked well ahead and arrived on time, however it was half an hour before even a drinks order was taken. The drinks took ages to arrive. We were warned that our meal would take a while because they had a party of eleven to cater for. We were also told that they didn't have any tomatoes if we wanted to order burgers. It was almost an hour more before our meal arrived - annoyingly well after a family of five sitting opposite had received theirs, despite arriving about thirty minutes after us. When the food arrived, I asked for mayonnaise. It didn't arrive until I was hungrily well through my lunch. Nobody came back to us subsequently, so we had to order more drinks from the bar. The food was ok, not outstanding. The serving staff polite and friendly, but in my opinion they must have been very under staffed. Surely there can be no excuse when bookings were taken well ahead? And not having tomatoes on a Friday lunchtime? I thought the prices were a little high for what we received and won't be going back.

Had Christmas lunch here this year, 2024. Absolutely excellent, couldn’t fault anything at all. Service great, staff extremely friendly and food utterly fantastic. Would definitely recommend. Happy New Year to you all .

We’ve had Christmas dinner at The Bowl today - the food, the service and the overall atmosphere was fantastic, highly recommend.

A lovely overnight stay and sunday lunch all delivered by staff that cared and took an interest. Not all goes right these days in any form of hospitality sector but the staff at this lovely pub with excellent food, good portions, always found a way to help or solve something missed for us and others who visited whilst we were there. They made our stay very comfortable and enjoyable. Thank you all.

Festive menu was delicious with a good choice and well presented. The Ox Wellington was particularly tasty

Great little Inn... well appointed accommodation, friendly staff and great restaurant food.

We were looking forward to our lunch here as we had good experiences in the past. It was a central meeting point for a pre-Christmas family get together. Unfortunately it wasn’t the same as it has been and has fallen short in hospitality and quality of food. The waiting staff claimed they hadn’t got our email to say some members of our party couldn’t make it, yet had put out the right number of settings for the reduced numbers. They claimed they hadn’t served us as they were waiting for all of us to arrive - were pretty curt about it too. I had a bugger of a time with allergy menus and had to contact via messenger, email and then eventually Butcombe Inns direct. The food quality was ok but not as it has been in the past. Fancy names for food but buns looked like they had taken them out of the freezer. Maybe we went on a bad day but we won’t be eating or recommending there any time soon.

We met friends - another couple - for a pre-Christmas lunch and a chance to catch up on our news. We were given a nice table in a quiet cornet, as requested and enjoyed the entire experience . The welcome was friendly, service excellent and the food delicious.
