We like to support local businesses and the Branzinos restaurant at the old Boathouse pub being only a mile or so away from us is perfect for lunch or evening meal. The restaurant is right on the River Tyne next to Newburn Bridge Our latest visit was on a very wet Saturday lunchtime but we soon forgot about the downpour outside We were shown to our table and immediately noticed despite the awful weather the place was busy Pizzas and Pastas are mostly less than ten pounds and are extremely good value. Despite the price there is no scrimping on ingredients We had the Risotto Roma., Picante Pizza and a Meat feast pizza, we all commented on how flavoursome they were Service was good in nice surroundings which reflect the Boathouses nautical past With drinks the bill came to just over thirty pounds. You can’t go wrong

Fantastic value, flamboyant (Italian) service, gorgeous food and lovely surroundings. You really can’t go far wrong for a great evening here - I’d never been before (didn’t know it existed) but will definitely be back.

We have just been for food at the newly re-opened BRANZINO at the Boathouse and I can tell you with confidence that it is newly decorated to a high standard and the atmosphere is amazing. We were warmly welcomed by a really adorable waitress who was confident and friendly. The Manager was funny and made us feel at ease immediately. Great Early Bird Specials for great prices and fantastic food with super service. What a refreshing new restaurant. We definitely will be back. Thanks

As my friend has just gotten a new dog, we had to look for somewhere Hecta could come with us. The Boathouse was just perfect, Sunday lunch (home made, not pre packed) was lovely, choice of beef, lamb, chicken or pork and 4 different veg, roast and mashed potatoes......sticky toffee pudd for afters.!! Hecta was made very welcome, and even had his own Sunday dinner, or he could have gone for Postmans fingers (sausages). Hecta lay down in front of the fire, while we ate our meal ! The Boathouse is very popular with dog walkers and families alike, it"s next to Newburn Park, even if you don"t want a meal, cake and coffee is £3.00. Management and staff very friendly, give this place a try, you wont be disappointed !

This pub is in a bad way - very shabby and not clean, sadly. We waited a very long time for "roast" chicken which, when it came, was a dried breast which had been oven baked it seemed, along with tepid slightly overcooked veg. We hadn't planned to stay long but service was extremely slow so left us no choice. If we'd not paid in advance we would have left and the food wasn't worth the wait. Avoid!!

This pub could be great, it’s right on some of the best bike/footpaths in the region, next to 3 rowing clubs and should be packed. It was dead....for reasons we quickly found out. The staff were shocking! The girl behind the bar was beyond rude, she didn’t actually speak enough to be rude, she just grunted, scowled, ate pork scratchings and made it clear she didn’t want to be there at all (the conversation she had on her phone telling someone to f*** off because she didn’t want to work another f***ing shift was nice for our 7 year old to hear), ignorant, unhappy, unfriendly. Tables were filthy, cutlery was just thrown onto the dirty tables, no condiments/sauces were offered. The food was bland, over cooked and basic (yorkshires were actually ok), the gravy was probably the best bit which I think they realised as they give you lots to drown the dry carrot/cabbage/peas/meat in so it’s palatable. Next time we’ll just walk in the other direction and go to The Ship in Wylam...a pub they should take some tips from. A pub like this could/should do well, the amount of people within walking distance give them plenty of chances. We definitely won’t be going back and they should rethink the sign outside saying they give a warm welcome as it’s a complete lie.

Ordinarily I wouldn't post a bad review but this was really bad so here goes.Didn't start well as staff got drinks order wrong and then staff basically shrugged their shoulders when I asked for the correct drinks. We waited over 1 hour (I timed it) for our food to arrive without anyone once popping over to tell us there was a delay in the kitchen. I mean the place wasn't even that busy so god knows why it took so long. This place was also freezing cold. We sat the whole time with our coats on as the balcony doors were wedged open the whole time. When the food did arrive it was very poor for the price and my meal turned up a further 5 minutes after everyone elses which further annoyed me. I had the pie feast (or something like that) and it was hardly a feast of anything remotely special. The bottom of the pie was incinerated and the the accompanying sides were stone cold. My 10 year old son ordered the kids burger and he refused to eat it as it tasted "funny". I tired it and it had an awful sickly taste and was a bizarre purple colour in the center. I will pretty much eat anything - I left it. So he basically sat and ate his cold chips. How can anyone get a burger so wrong? Really?? I left with a very sour taste in my mouth. Quite literally! The "Manager" did come over and apologies for delays etc but it seemed hardly genuine. We wont be visiting this place again. Spoiled our day in Durham.

I used to be a regular in the Boathouse years ago. It has always been a friendly, traditional local pub. Earlier this year when I began walking my pup along the riverside,I wss delighted that the pub was still dog-friendly- in fact,I'd go so far as to say,it encouraged the many dog-walkers who traipse along Hadrian's Way throughout the year, not to mention locals whose dogs have always been welcomed , to stop for a reviving pint, cuppa, meal etc. You can only imagine my disappointment then when today I went striding in with my dog in tow only to be told that dogs are no longer inside. We were advised that we could sit outside today (freezing cold and raining vs real log fire? Hmmm, let's think...) When I asked why,I was told they'd had complaints. Complaints from a couple of snotty g*ts who visit occasionally has ended a decades' long tradition. Oh well, we'll just go to The Engine Inn in Walbottle instead.

Stopped in for lunch as had heard good things. Staff were very welcoming and this is a pub with lovely traditional charm. Sadly it wasn't warm enough to sit out and enjoy the river views. My husband had burger & chips and I had home made corned beef slice and chips. Both were amazing. No flashy presentation just good honest grub. The chips were to die for, proper chips like your gran used to make!!! Only disappointment was the lack of choice of real ales but willing to forgive that because everything else was spot on. Meal & drinks cost under £15 for two.

We were at the 12-mile point of our 15-mile first day of our east-to-west Hadrian's Wall hike. The Boathouse is perfectly positioned for a well-deserved break en route. It ws a rainy first day for us. As we walked towards the Boathouse - the sun came out. We took it as a sign. The Boathouse did not disappoint.

First time I have been and would definitely not recommend. Four of us went for dinner and as we were pushed for time we ordered burgers and a macaroni for the little one. We waited over an hour and when they they were dry. My niece had the southern fried chicken burger, which she said was ok but myself and my 5yr old were disgusted. The falafel burger had a really bad taste from it and my daughters macaroni was grey!!! She took one forkful and pushed it away. The staff that were on saw that we were sitting with full plates and did not even bother to check if there was anything wrong. Although it was only £30 for 4 of us to eat a main course and soft drinks I feel it is highly overpriced for the quality of food. Sorry sandy bay, your restaurant and chippy really let you down.

Went for lunch, beer garden is very good and reasonably tidy. Dogs are allowed. Meals very reasonable, as were the drinks. Service pleasant . Excellent location...BUT clientele are ( in general ) awfull ! This consisted of local families who did nothing but use offensive language consistently and spoilt our visit. This class of clientele seemed to be the norm...it is a shame as the location is good, the building is nice and food ok. It is on the main walk of the keel mans, where loads of cyclists, walkers and people pulling up in cars just walked / cycled / drove away due to the regular / typical customer in the pub and beer garden .. Time to turn your business around I think, and deter your usual riff raff !

We dropped in for a pint and some soup towards the end of our first day walking the Hadrian's Wall Path. The homemade leek & potato soup was very good but there was no fresh baked bread to go with it (we were at least warned in advance but had to make do with a rather dry roll), and the only real ale available (Deuchars IPA) was no better than OK.Perhaps we should have just carried on walking to The Keelman, which was in any case our overnight stop.

This pub is right on the banks of the river Tyne just west of Newcastle on a main cycle route and popular riverside walk. Having grown up around his area I know of the Boathouse but had never eaten there. They advertise Lunch from 12-6 weekdays and 12-4 I think on weekends and state their food is homemade so when taking my Mother for lunch on a glorious day I thought we'd drop by. There are loads of picnic benches in really pretty grounds and you have an amazing view of the Tyne and countryside and the rowing club. We had a really great lunch, cottage pie with chips and veg and scampi and all the trimmings. Homemade chips were a treat and to finish we had a slab of ridiculously moist carrot cake with a great cup of coffee. All for under 20 quid including a couple of lemonades. The girl who served us was very friendly and polite and most importantly had a smile on her chops, sad to say but this is rarity these days and she well dissevered the tip we left. I'll definitely be back and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it, especially for an al fresco lunch.

We called into this café on our way to The Great Northern Museum. We ordered two coffees at the counter, but when we came to pay, we were told that cash was not accepted. This is a practice that we find quite deplorable so we left. It turned out well for us, because there was a café a few doors down which was very good and accepts cash.

Had high hopes for brunch at Eve but was a bit disappointed. We were seated straight away by a friendly young man. Probably sat for about 15-20 minutes without anyone approaching us for our order. I managed to get the hosts attention and he took the order for us. Seemed like there was a lot of staff but most of them lingered round the bar area. Saying that, their uniforms were odd, some were dressed in jeans/tshirts/aprons but none of them co ordinated so not always easy to identify who worked there and who didn’t. Pancakes were £11, were quite a small portion so not enough to fill you up. The live music was good but I’m not really sure it suited the vibe.
