Phoenix Bar Jesmond in Newcastle upon Tyne

Pity I have to give them one star. I was out for drinks with my son and his friend. I ordered drinks at the bar at 2248hrs and received no warning the bar was closing in twelve minutes. At 2302hrs security ordered us to leave the premises. We objected and asked for five minutes to finish our drinks. They refused and when one of the security team started to man handle my sons friend, I decided it was best to leave before the situation escalated into an even more unpleasent experience.

Nous avions réservé une table l'après midi après un long voyage mais en arrivant à l'heure prévue la salle de restaurant était pleine , nous avons proposé de manger côté bar mais ça n'était pas possible ( peut être parce que nous sommes français car d'autres mangeaient a la table a côté de nous ...) On nous propose une conso pour patienter .....tout ça pour qu'on vienne nous annoncer après 30 mn qu'il fallait encore attendre 50 mn .Nous décidons de partir bien déçus ....et là la serveuse nous fait payer notre bière ...quel manque d'élégance alors que c'était une erreur de leur part .....😞

Not normally one to leave a bad review, but given the only two times I’ve visited Phoenix I’ve had a crap experience I thought it’d be worth warning others. The first time I visited with my partner, we had checked the cocktail menu online beforehand to save some time - when I asked for a cocktail (listed on the menu) at the bar, the bartender looked at me in disgust and asked “what the f***’s one of those?” - comical, but a tad unprofessional if you ask me. Secondly, we returned recently as we were pretty hungry whilst on osbourne road and fancied something light to eat - the toasted sandwiches sounded decent so thought we’d give them a go. What actually was served to us, genuinely looked as if it had been toasted using a hairdryer, or perhaps on a slightly warm radiator - soggy, limp pieces of white bread with some half-melted cheese on top and a scrap of supermarket sliced ham in between. Definitely enough to put me off returning, especially when pints are nearly £6 and there are plenty of better places on the same street!

Chicken with creamy garlic was not good at all, so below average. Cream very liquid and just a bit, raw vegetables (not enough steam/boil), can/tin sliced mushrooms 40 min waiting for the food.

Great food, great service!! Would definitely recommend. One particular staff member was delightful and so chatty. Young girl with short blonde hair, quite short and nose piercing. Gave me and my husband great service and nothing was too much hassle.

Excellent experience. Man in blazer (didn’t get his name unfortunately) provided great service, made cocktails that were off menu and even went to Waitrose to get ingredients for drinks that I’d ordered. Overall he was lovely and very helpful !

Quite a nice pub for a town centre(ish), the recent refurb has left the place with a modern but traditional feel. No real ales unfortunately, but a good range otherwise. Sky sports on the TVs, so I reckon a good place to watch the rugby.

Dropped in for Sunday dinner, altho a tad glitzy from the outside the surroundings once inside were lovely and sat in the dining area to the right if the bar which was surprisingly quiet, staff were very polite and friendly, we both had the roast beef dinner which went very nice with a pint of neck lifter - the food was top quality hot and tasty couple of thick slices of topside, proper yorkshire pud, mash, roasts, carrot n swede mash, kale, brocoli cooked properly (not mushy) and a tasty gravy - overall excellent and would go again, warranted a tip 😋 didn't have a starter or pud as that plateful was enough so retired to have a food coma at our hotel

We sat outside quite late at night and the heaters kept us really warm. Good selection of gins but a wee bit pricey

We are regular visitors to this bar and usually find it ok as we normally just drink there but yesterday we had garlic bread between two, it was nothing like the description on menu. We were charged £6 for 3 small pieces of baguette garlic butter slices on a small plate with shredded lettuce although it tasted nice it was disgusting value for money & wouldn't fill a mouse.... never again ! The garlic bread used to be much bigger & enough for 2 people. I wish I'd taken a photo on hind sight.

Amazing food, great banter and ladies only toilets, what's not to love! Keep up the good work chaps.

I visited the bar with friends, and who I assume was the manager served my friend first. She was not friendly and took a long time to serve her drink. I asked how much a drink was and she walked away rather than answering. I waited 5 minutes for her to resurface and she left a pint while I wasn’t looking. I didn’t realise it was mine which is worrying as she left my drink unattended on a busy bar. She then charged me without telling me the price as I’d asked. When I expressed annoyance she showed visible disgust towards me and didn’t address my concern. Upon leaving she made it obvious that she disliked me, which is very inappropriate considering that it was my first drink and all I asked was the price. I am not happy with this service

Long time patron of The Phoenix, Jesmond. Always delighted to be there with a pint. No complaints, would highly recommend. Many thanks to all involved & thank you to the shape shifting Abbey for her hospitality.

Decently priced drinks. Lots of tv screens for viewing Sports.

Take away quality food at restaurant prices. The Pheonix burger isn't great and is covered in that orange sauce you get from the van in B&Q's car park and stuck in a cheap bun that disintegrated in the sloppy mess. The chips were OK. The halloumi wrap was OK but without any great presentation but should have been on the 'Light Bite' menu and priced at around £5 rather than £11.50. The bar manager made a little effort at an apology when he mistakenly asked how our meal was but you could tell he was more embarrassed he'd asked rather than for the food. With a single pint of beer and a cup of coffee the bill came to over thirty quid. Having recently been in London and spending nearly a hundred pounds for lunch on a couple of occasions you'll understand it was the quality and value for money that disappointed rather than the actual cost (and this is Newcastle, not London). No plans to ever repeat this experience. Not recommended.

Called in with my wife Christine for Sunday lunch after calling in for a drink the previous night. We both ordered the dinner with beef and werent disappointed , it was the most tasty and delicious Sunday lunch we had both ever had, mash , sprout , carrots , turnip and yorkshire were superb . We both picked a dessert out , me the sticky toffe pudding and ice cream and Christine the Eton mess, we waited 45 mins for our our desserts , no staff came to take our dinner plates away in this time , i eventually went to the bar and asked where they were and nobody seemed to have a clue ! Desserts were only mediocre when they did come. Superb main but desserts and staff service really poor , shame because it would have got full marks.

Poor slow service, some items on menu no longer available! Waited some time for food and steak sandwich arrived ...... steak sliced in bits cold! No onions as stated, and raw peppers not roasted. Chips were hard like they had been reheated.

Excellent , lovely interior and 2 pool tables , if the pool cues were better that would make it unbeatable on that road

The food has gone extremely downhill in the last month. The pizza’s used to be amazing. But now there the worst I’ve ever tasted. They resemble play dough, they used to be light & full of flavour. Now just stodgy & bland. Also tried the scampi which were just little nuggets of mush! The place & staff are really nice & it’s worth going for a drink especially £3 pint of Stella. But avoid the food like the plague

Staying in Jesmond for the Sunday of bank holiday weekend & we found this bar, lots of outdoor seating & plenty indoor too, good atmosphere, plenty of foot fall from customers, a few characters too, we liked it & stayed for 3 drinks the only negative bit for me was being served drinks in plastic cups as opposed to glasses, cocktails weren’t & for some reason a guy at the bar had a glass 🥃, nothing kicking off & I can understand outside but indoors????

Lovely relaxed bar with good selection of drinks. Menu looks good but we didnt eat. Shoutout to Ben the barman! (employee of the month!) 😁

Very slow service. The have cocktail menu, but are not really well placed to do cocktails - some staff clearly don’t know how to do them and it takes a while to find out. I’d suggest to focus on simpler drinks.

We were a large group of lads visiting Newcastle and had a booking with Phoenix bar on Friday 25/06/2021. They were able to accommodate us across multiple tables inside and also for a meal later in the day. The food and staff were impeccable and we are really grateful for their hospitality.

We were in on the weekend and had a good time, the drinks were a bit slower than we would of liked but not the end of the world. Our waitress (think her name was El) was outstanding and nothing was too much trouble, thank you!

Visited the newly refurbished Phoenix bar on Osborne road and was impressed by the finish on the furnishings .The drinks were up to a very good standard of taste . We tried the pizza which I cannot recommend highly enough as it was probably the tastiest freshest one I have ever had ...top class .Well worth a visit if you are visiting the Osborne Road area .

Right, I’ve been to Phoenix a few times and it’s great, but I just have to say, the Quattro bouncer is a horrible little bald minge.

The location is good but the service is terrible and the food is average and overpriced in comparison to other nearby bars. They took over 1h to get our food order and once it arrived, there was no cutlery. After 30 minutes of several failed requests for knife and fork, we finally received it but the food was cold by then. This isn’t staff’s fault, management needs to realise they need more people as we weren’t the only disappointed customers.

Currently sat in the bar, arrived over an hour ago, took 30 minutes until someone took our order of drinks, been waiting 40mins for two cocktails. Totally shocking.

Beautiful sun trap, but service was very slow. We seemed to get a bit more luckily compared to other customers with serving time. Sometimes drinks were served in a glass and other times in a plastic cup, even though we consistently ordered the same drink. A nice place but with the prices of drinks you would expect a lot more, I assume this is partially due to it also being a hotel.

Terrible service. Waited nearly an hour for our first drinks. Complained to manager who was rude. Won't be rushing back

Visited this bar in May and it was brilliant, we couldn't fault it, but returned last night with a group of friends and waited an hour for our drinks. We asked to speak to the manager and she came over with a awful attitude and was less than helpful. She was actually really rude. Could be a great bar but the service has definitely gone down hill.

I think you are just ripping people off I don’t mind spending money on a good time but 9 quid for that little plastic cup of gin is taking the p#%5. The only bad bar I’ve visited on Osbourne Rd. Won’t be back.

Lovely cocktails, service was a bit slow several staff walked passed with head down deliberately ignoring when trying to order but table service is probably not the norm here and they were short staffed.

I would just like to say how delighted I was with the staff here. So polite, so helpful! Seems to be rare across some of the other bars on this road! Great place.

This bar recently opened on Osbourne road and is a welcomed addition to the area. It is more classy than the other bars, with better cocktails and more attentive staff. The chicken wings are also the best I have ever tasted and would certainly come here for just food and not just drinks. The seats are very comfortable and it provides good heaters and coverage. I believe this will become the new place to be on Osbourne road before long!! Cannot recommend enough for any occasion! drinks or food its ideal.

Visited for the first time yesterday. It was raining heavily but we were lovely and dry under the shelters and kept warm by the heaters. We ordered Prosecco which was presented brilliantly with extra fresh raspberries. We also tried a couple of cocktails and would recommend the Phoenix one... delicious. We tried the burger and fries which was also amazing. Will be back to try more of the menu. Thankyou to the staff

Came here for lunch and a few drinks and was so happy with the service we recieved. The food was amazing with big portions, would definitely recommend the pizza! Everything was done in a professional manner and all covid procedures were followed. I will be returning very soon.

Visited this bar twice since opening and I was not disappointed, food is exceptionally good, I’d highly recommend the pizza and garlic bread to anyone. We sat outdoors and I could only describe it as being on holiday... relaxing atmosphere, sun shining and the decor is beautiful, will definitely be returning.

Terrible service ! Less of the Phoenix ..just the ashes.

Bought two double gin and tonics. After tasting them it came apparent that they had not used a bottle of tonic per gin and tonic. After challenging them they preferred to lie rather than do the right thing. Unfortunately, the waitress did not understand the basic principles of customer service and tried to get us to buy another bottle of tonic.

Only had drinks but a nice place for it on Osborne Road.

Good service, several bars so can choose how lively you want to be. I have been coming here for years and it was better in the past. Two toilets which are relatively clean. Comfy seats. Pool table. Lots of students in term time. All the bars in Osborne road are much the same as it is part of a well trodden pull crawl along Osborne road. Wouldn't take my mum here but would take my mates.

Went because the Lonsdale was too loud, was a very nice chilled out bar and pool table

Poor service ordered four meal and only received 3 when complained the girl who served us had only put 3 meals through even after asking a another member of staff who to do a special order for the 4th Meal. When the manager finally came to speak to me, he said we have not paid for the meal and was quite rode. Will not be returing.

Ordered ONE 14 inch pizza @ 19:20 and it turns up at 20:50 and it's 12 inches inside a 14 inch box. Don't be taken for a mug, buy your food elsewhere. This place is a joke.

Good and tasty food. Quite relaxing on a Tuesday night. Music slightly loud when the place is nearly empty.

Paid £1 for delivery and the guy had no idea where he was going - ON FOOT may I add - so understandably, it delayed the arrival of my food!

First of all, my order took over an hour to arrive and when it did, delivery driver forgot items which I had to remind him to collect him from his car, unfortunately the order was still incorrect, as items did not arrive and we received items we didn't order. Rang the restaurant, said they'd resend the correct items. But never turned up. Although the food was of decent quality, I then later received an apologetic text from them which was appreciated.

The spicy veg pizza is amazing!!!!

Firstly, the incorrect meal deal was delivered and it took considerably longer than the estimate given. The quality of the pizzas was very poor. There was very little cheese on the pizza - given that this should be one of the main ingredients, it didn't really resemble pizza. Overall, the pizzas were relatively tasteless so I felt that it was money wasted and a disappointing meal. The other food may be tasty but I'd suggest that you stay away from the pizzas - they may be good value but they are not good quality.

I've never had a bad pizza in my life...until this one. The curries at this place are great but the pizzas we received were covered in *so much* cheese that I could barely see any tomato on my Margherita pizza. Stick to curry guys.

Surprised at the great value meal deals for £10 and £12, pizza tasted great, delivered hot in insulated delivery bag and nothing beats a chilled 2L bottle of coke. Great service when requesting topping change and delivery. Will purchase again.
