Popped in on Monday lunchtime and very much enjoyed scampi and chips - both were excellent quality and nicely presented - mushy peas are at extra cost which is fair enough. Tartare sauce is also at an extra cost and that is not so fair. Neither is it very good containing too much dill and little capers or gherkins if any. Fish and chips shops have faired badly since the pandemic. Oil prices sky high and fuel prices through the roof in addition to this - staff costs and pretty much everything else has gone up. But it’s friendlier to the customer if tartare sauce etc is included in the cost. People don’t like extra costs. Menus could do with reprinting as they are torn and don’t look good - napkins could be a little better and a slice of lemon with the fish would upgrade the dishes a little. These are not complaints just observations. The sign outside says one of the top ten fish bars in the UK. With. Little tweaking it could be No.1

We went in here for lunch about 2. We had the small fish and chips and it was. This restuarant has created a new meaning of small. It was a rip off at £10.45 for a peice of the size of a sardine. We won't be back. and we will never recommend it

Went for a late fish n chips lunch and dined inside. The restaurant is upstairs in a slightly unusual room which subtly slants to one side, which is quite quirky. The guy who served us was really polite and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The food was delicious, the fish was perfectly battered and tasted really nice and fresh, the chips were nicely cooked and very nice too. If you want a really good nicely cooked tasty chippy meal in Gloucester with a great friendly service i can thoroughly recommend the Black and White restaurant and take away.

Not impressed. Small portions. Only dressing available was a thing of back kitchen mayonnaise. Something they use to cook not set on a table. Not sure if putting dressing on salad is an American thing only but eating a pile of green leaf dry isn’t very appetizing. Chairs were wobbly to the point I felt I might brake mine. I’d pass. Don’t buy the “traditional fish and chips” sign they have out front.

What a dump, the smell of old oil hits you as soon as you enter, the stairs to the upstairs restaurant are very very steep & dirty looking, my wife had the 2 fish cakes & chips, the fish cakes were way overcooked, the chips were hard on the outside & way overcooked, I had the cod roe & chips, the cod roe was okay but ruined by the crispy greasy batter,?my chips were also hard, I would recommend not going here if you want good fish & chips, & they overcharged us. Will never eat here again, even the restaurant is filthy, wallpaper hanging down in places & the chairs are wobbly.

I was brought up in Gloucester and have fond memories, but have only returned twice in last 55 years. Just had to eat here for old time sake. Very impressed with the friendly staff, food was excellent, & compared with my local chippy in Greater London, brilliant value for money. Decur could do with a tidy up.

Ate in the restaurant - very shabby indeed. Several tables dirty and still had plates etc on them. Sat on chair which was wobbly and when I went to change it found it was practically falling apart - broken. Someone could have sat there and had an accident and injury. Chips were lovely - Gloucester sausage was disappointing just a cheap sausage. Yet they have a excellent butcher literally 2 mins away why not buy decent sausages. Won't be visiting again

Its a small restaurant up the narrow staircase above the Black and White fish and chip shop of course the main reason for going there is for the fish and chips which are great freshly cooked very hot and we've never left feeling hungry and not considered expensive. We have been there several times and never been let down

Chapeau!

From the exterior looks like usual take away. Going upstairs is initially like going back in time to the 70s, but then much further back. First toilet I've ever been to during eating where if I wanted I could have had a full stand up shower. Fish and chips tasty chips very good but waitress nailed it. Lovely lady, nice chit chat and attentive service given its just fish and chips place. Extra points for wonky building

This place is just off the pedestrianized main drag, around the corner from the tourist information office, but a world away from the soulless chain eateries that are mostly what you find there. It is in a funky half-timbered old place, with the chip shop on the ground floor and a few tables upstairs for eat-in orders. The cod and chips were classic, straight out of the fryer and as good as I've had, and they were less expensive than most places, too. There is a menu so extensive that you wonder if it could possibly be any good (and almost certainly some frozen food is involved), but there's no reason to have anything but the fish, at least on a first visit. The staff were friendly and efficient.

You so often find fish and chip shops that lack any real flavour, this one is different. The fish tasted fresh and wasn't dry, the chips weren't soggy, and it's right by the Docks for a takeaway before you go to look at the boats!

The BLACK & WHITE Restaurant and Take Away is situated practically in the centre of Gloucester City, not far from the main cross roads ; North - South - East and Westgate Street, all of which are pedestrianized. This fish and chip shop/restaurant can be reached by walking from the cross roads along Southgate Street, for approx. 200 yards/metres and taking the first turning right into which is known as Longsmith Street. The fish and chip shop/restaurant is approx. 30 yards/metres on the right hand side of the road. Access can also be gained by travelling up Longsmith Street from the direction of the Severn River which runs along the front of the city. The premises which is very old, stands out among other buildings adjoining it. It has a kind of facia appearance (Black & White ) synonymous with the style of the Tudor period. It is an attractive little premises; the fish and chip shop being on the ground floor level, whilst the restaurant where you can dine and have an alcoholic drink to accompany the meal is on the upper floor and can only be reached by stairs. The fish and chip shop customer area is small, but is manageable for a small number of customers queuing and waiting for their take - away. At the door way is a step which is slightly deeper than the average doorstep, but no problem for able bodied persons, but does render it difficult for disability access by way of wheel chair - as well as the shop being a small area and its entrance being narrow. One would have to be physically able to climb the stairs if making use of the restaurant dining area. ' The Black & White Restaurant & Take Away in my opinion have always had a good reputation for the quality of their fish and chips, and although it has changed ownership over the past few years, a fairly good standard of fish and chip frying remains. Reasonable portions of chips relative to the size ordered are afforded. The chips are well cooked and are dry and firm....and 'not' greasy or soggy as can be found at some fish and chip shops. The flesh of the fish is of a nice white flaky texture and is coated with a crispy golden brown batter. Both fish and chips served there are very enjoyable to eat, and the price is reasonable. The only fault I find with all Fish and Chip Shops nowadays, is that the salt and vinegar no longer remains on the counter for the customer to help themselves and sprinkle their own quantity on their fish and chips. Instead it is placed on the food by the server which is often sprinkled too liberally resulting in too much salt and/or vinegar. Nobody wants to eat food with excess salt and vinegar covering their food. The 'Black & White Restaurant & Takeaway is one of just a few that remain in the bounds of the city centre of Gloucester. It is good to see the good old traditional British Fish and Chip Shop Restaurant and Takeaway survive amid the city's numerous foreign restaurants and takeaways and fast food outlets, such as McDonalds, KFC and Burger King. Hopefully, the Black & White Restaurant & Takeaway at 4, Longsmith Street, Gloucester will continue to serve those in Gloucester; and as for visitors to Gloucester, whether they be from home or abroad, then 'The Black & White Restaurant & Take Away' is well worth a visit for a tasty meal of good old traditional British fish and chips, which is well worth writing home about. Well Done ' Black & White Restaurant. Keep up the tradition !!!

Terrible Experience - Never Coming Back it wasn’t the bars staff fault I recently visited High Orchard and spent £50 on what turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. From start to finish, the service and food were completely unacceptable. The food arrived stone cold, and we waited ages for cutlery. In the end, we had to go and find our own cutlery and sauces. My friend ordered a burger, which came without the sauce he had paid extra for, adding to the frustration. When I spoke to the manager, he did offer fresh chips, which were fine, but that didn’t make up for the overall experience. My friend also ordered cheesy chips but was given a bowl of plain chips with cheese on the side. That’s not what we expected for the price. When I finally started eating my korma, the chicken was rubbery and completely inedible. It was one thing after another. This was hands down one of the worst dining experiences we’ve ever had. £50 wasted, and we will absolutely not be coming back.
