The Black Prince in West Oxfordshire

We had intended going here for a meal during our stay, but after visiting for drink decided it wasn’t a good choice. The menu was extremely limited as they were running down stock as they were shortly closing down as the property had been sold. The property was tired and mismatched and seemed to be frequented by local drinkers. The location near the river could have been a great place and hopefully the new owners have capitalized on this. We would certainly look in again if we were visiting the area just to see how it had changed. There is stiff competition in the area with other fine eateries and pubs

We had booked this venue for our dinner but having stopped for a drink decided to go elsewhere. They had a very limited menu and had an aroma of stale beer. A place to avoid

Lovely oldy worldy pub. Great atmosphere, nice welcome and excellent service. All four of us had The Fisherman, focaccia bread with fish fingers, salad and chips. All of us thoroughly enjoyed it. Great selection of real ales. Would definitely return if in the area again.

We read reviews and were really looking forward to eating there. On arrival we were told that they were out of many dishes as they had been busy- disappointing but legitimate on Mother’s Day. It took us a few minutes to decide what we did want from the menu but were shocked when we were rudely and deliberately ignored. I have never experienced this kind of treatment and was totally shocked. At first I thought it was just our feeling, but after we tried to get service and we’re ignored for over 10 min we got up and left. We ended up in town at another restaurant where we received excellent service and lovely food.

Great food, excellent value plus friendly, helpful staff. Absolute gem of a pub in a beautiful setting.

Lucky enough to get the last table for Saturday lunch. Lovely service, attentive without being over the top. Chicken pie was outstanding. The burger was standard fare but very tasty. The mint panna cotta was simply delicious. Always nice to taste a really nice pint of Tribute outside of Cornwall. (This is very rare!) Definitely worth a visit.

A short menu is usually a good sign - everything is likely to be freshly cooked - and this proved to be the case. A vegetarian in our group of 4 is used to getting something that is just meat free but was as pleased with his meal as we were with ours. A really excellent meal, lovely staff, comfortable and convivial surroundings. And, to top it all, excellent value. Would thoroughly recommend.

Just the loveliest pub. I've driven past a hundred times, but finally decided to stop. Wonderful food and friendly, thoughtful service - and dogs are welcome too! Thank you. We will be back.

Sat next to an open fire on a cold winter’s night tucking into the most amazing homemade chicken and leek pie, all you every want from an evening out. Just wish we lived closer so we could visit every week.

We went to the Black Prince for weekday lunch after a trip to Blienham Palace. Booked 5 minutes before arriving and glad we did. It was very busy but the service and staff were great. We had the olives and garlic bread starter, huge portion! We could have shared. For main we had the veggie burger and rissotto. Both were lovely and again large portions. Nice atmosphere and great to see both fire places roaring, although with the only seats available by the fire place it did get a bit warm. Great standard of food and service. No wonder it was so busy.

Wow.. So nice to stumble into a genuine British pub. Roaring fireplaces with excellent food. I had the burger which was light and fluffy with monster hand cooked chips. My partner had the chicken sales and she loved it! The staff were very friendly and helpful and we were made to feel very welcome. Very good price compared to the other pubs in the area Well done….

Our visit was wonderful! The food was great quality, Cassie and Luke and Glenda made it feel as though we were at a friends for supper. The servings were huge and even the bathrooms were clean and smelled great. Worth the bus ride!!

We visited this pub on the Friday, just before the Bank Holiday weekend. We chose it, after reading the many positive reviews on Trip Advisor. Maybe the chef was away, but I have to say, I think both the food and service were awful. My partner said his lasagne was "OK" so I'm rating the visit as poor, rather than terrible. I opted for the chicken and leek pie. It was all pastry! No one came over to ask if the meals were alright, nor to collect any glasses or the plates and we were enjoying the sunshine for an hour an three quarters, so no excuse. When we went to leave, I took the plates inside to the bar and told the member of staff that my pie was very disappointing and he just looked at the heap of discarded pastry and said "Oh! Sorry."

Our experience was good, but we questioned whether the special pork burgers were cooked enough. The chef said yes. Two of us ate them. I had a stomach ache, my sister was sick later that evening.

We are lucky enough to have the Black Prince as our local. Definitely Woodstock's best pub. Understandably, prices have gone up, but we are disappointed that their wonderful chilli nachos and ham egg and chips are no longer on the menu. We miss them!

We visited this pub for dinner: the inside of the pub is lovely with a nice log fire and we had a lovely attentive waitress. However the lovely waitress was unable to be as attentive as she should have been as she managed every table whilst her colleagues actively ignored customers.Our calm meal was regularly interrupted by a screeching dog which is probably indicative of the standard of the pub we were in.The food was less than mediocre m and we waited for half an hour to pay the bill. Shame as it has potential but a very disappointing experience.

We visited the restaurant as a surprise 60th Birthday Celebration for our sister. The food was lovely and the staff were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The staff were as excited as we were for the arrival of our sister. We had a brilliant time and will definitely be back again and recommend it to anybody. Thank you for making the day so special.

I booked a table of 19 here for my mums 60th birthday as a surprise for her. Everything about the day was perfect!! We were able to pre order what we wanted so there was no faffing around on the day…the food was beautiful (NOTHING went in the bin!!), and the 3 wonderful ladies working were just amazing! There’s honestly nothing that any of us could fault, and that’s a rarity when there’s so many of us altogether. We will definitely be back, and would recommend The Black Prince to anybody. We booked for a festive day combined with Blenheim palace and the team here couldn’t have been more welcoming! This is a great spot to walk into Blenheim through the footpath entrance. The food was genuine pub food that tasted great with excellent service right from booking to amending the booking to arrival and beyond! I agree that the aesthetics need a little tlc, but with COVID I imagine investing in the building is not feasible right now. Well done team Black Prince!

Met there with some family on Tuesday, very nice pub, helpful staff, good beer, and the best fish and chips I've had for years, fresh cooked to order. Not a huge pub, so best to book if you're going to eat there (and it's well worth eating there!). Do check out the online menu, there's a good range of interesting meals there besides one or two old favouritesIt's every bit as nice as it looks in the photos.

My wife and I had lunch at the Black Prince last Sunday, we had booked as we were visiting Blenheim Palace in the afternoon. Warm welcome and sat next the the lovely log fire which was appreciated as it was freezing outside. I had the fish and chips my wife had the beef Sunday lunch, both good.Highly recommend.

After visiting Blenheim Palace for a walk around the gardens ( and seeing all the Lamborghini’s) the Bull run in aid of Movember, we were looking for lunch, my wife had researched this pub but we didn’t book. Arrived at 13:00 approx and offered the choice of 2 two seater tables, another big table was free but reserved, we chose the one by the log burner.The welcome was friendly, polite and warm, our 2 little dogs were also given a little biscuit each,Good choice of food, not just the std pub grub, drinks arrived and were enjoyed, food arrived and was lovely, service was attentive, friendly with no pressure to hurry,The pub was full and they did have to turn away one customer who phoned to enquire about eating, but that’s a sign of a good pub..The only reason for not giving a 5 star review is the outside appearance of this pub, if it had been down to me I would have driven past and not stoped, it appeared closed, the car park and outside area was scruffy, and the pub sign was not there, I am so pleased we decided to go in and will go back.Thank you

Arrived here at 1.45pm, looking forward to having a meal with my brother only to be told they'd stop serving. The board outside said they finished taking food orders at 2pm. Absolutely disgusted with the fact they wouldn't take our order and it wasn't even 2pm, very misleading by putting 2pm on the blackboard! Will be going elsewhere in future.

Our first visit to the Black Prince and extremely impressed with the friendly service, comfortable and welcoming dining area, well kept real ale, and the delicious home made chicken and ham pie

En route we chose this place by the road due to its good reviews on here. We were welcomed in a very friendly manner which continued through the meal. They have some interesting real ales on hand pump and a menu with some slightly different dishes on as well as specials. The Chicken pie they say is famous and you can see why - it's really tasty. Fresh vegetables in butter too.The special bakewell tart was a better choice than the Tiramisu which despite promising dates and cardamon was a bit tasteless. But all home made and service with a smile, reasonable prices, I'd stop here again if passing.

Excellent food in addition to superb service and a great atmosphere provide the right mixture for a wonderful evening. Highly recommended!

We nearly cancelled as it was raining so hard and we had to walk from the centre of town, so glad we didn't!The staff were great and the food was excellent, well worth getting soaked for and luckily the rain stopped before we had to walk back!

Enjoyed all our food, very good value, lovely staff. We had the chicken suet pie which was fab followed by crumble.

We booked a table for six the day before. All the staff were friendly and helpful - from the person on the phone, to the bar staff. The meals were well priced and the service efficient , as they were pretty busy in the evening. It is a traditional pub rather than a gourmet pub but that is meant as a compliment. The pub is just over the road from a public entrance into Blenheim Park , and the pub proved an ideal place to end our day after a walk in the grounds of the palace, There is also a pleasant beer garden by the river

We came here for my husbands birthday meal. The staff we very efficient and friendly, the food was very well cooked and presented, also incredibly good value! Don’t come here if you’re after fine dining, but for excellent pub food it’s a must! One slight niggle, the lighting was a little harsh where we were sat - opposite the bar- but it really is a minor thing. Thank you

We dropped into the Black Prince for lunch whilst on a trip to Bladon and Woodstock. Our greeting was friendly, the service was excellent and our lunch (lasagne and their signature pie) was great. They have a few real beers on handpump as well as a large range of keg beers and lagers. We would visit them again without hesitation.

Marvellously friendly pub with old fashioned pub grub.Sunday lunch was plentiful and very tasty, really great vegetables with a chorizo surprise. We were made to feel very welcome.Parking out the back is about the only place in Woodstock you can stop, highly recommended and a great stopover if you’re on your way somewhere. We planned to stop again on our way back from the Cotswolds but had to detour. Make no mistake we will make another visit.

Spent the afternoon at the Black Prince, family of five. We all enjoyed our meals, ranging from salads, katsu curry to nachos. The service was good and the staff very friendly, prices fair.

This is a very friendly place to visit. Immediately we were greeted, selected a table and served drinks with a tab opened without asking. The food was not only outstanding, but great value with generous portions. The staff are very friendly and polite and this makes eating in a great little place a lovely experience.

The food was top quality, piping hot and very tasty. We were a table of 4 people and all had different food - it was all REALLY good. We will definitely be going back. The service was good, staff were polite but friendly, and best of all we didn't feel rushed. It was a lovely setting, and all Covid regulations were very clear and easy to follow. This made us all feel we could relax and enjoy our food and the company - our first meeting in over 12 months. Thank you for restoring our confidence in eating out again.

My wife and I visited Woodstock and went to the Black Prince for dinner. We both had the Pie of the day which was very nice. The staff were very attentive , but the place needs a refub and the menu was a little limited. I would say that our meal was fine but we wouldd't go back because it's just Pub Grub and we were looking for a little more choice, but overall what we had was OK

Lovely staff,food good and just a really nice place to chill and chat . We had a couple of showers but still managed to stay outside. Staff are so friendly and don't hound you to order even when the food is closing at 2pm

From start to finish our lunch alongside the river was amazing. Covid precautions very evident, toilets clean, staff without exception were friendly, welcoming and highly efficient. The sandwiches were immense but don't leave without sampling the panacotta regardless of whether you have room for it or not! The pub is a freehouse and the offerings were very good, served well, promptly and in very good condition.Hadn't anticipated a pub in such a good location being THIS good. Thank you

Plucked this pub at random as a half-way meeting point to catch up with family members after such a long covid separation. A great find. The food was simple, well cooked, delicious - and very reasonably priced. The covid rules were very strictly imposed, but in a most pleasant manner. Afterwards we were recommened the delighful walk around Blenheim. We'll be back.

Called in on speck after being recommended by staff at another restaurant in the town. Good beer and great food...recommend the chicken and ham pie. Decent price and worth the ten minute walk from the centre of the town. Beer garden by a small stream/river as well.

Asked on the off-chance they had a free table, and were delighted to get the thumbs up after our long walk. Excellent friendly staff, all Covid precautions clearly adhered to. The salads & sharing platters were great quality & the little treat & pat for our four legged friend was thoughtful & genuine. So nice to be able to eat again in a great pub garden with good atmosphere. Very pleased to see this one busy and serving fresh tasty meals.Thank you to all involved; it can't be easy to get going again but we really appreciated all your hard work.

Wow!!what a find.Cannot praise this pub enough for the way that they have adapted to the new ways of working.Everything ils covid secure from entering the garden to the toilet facilities.The food is amazing and staff very friendly.It was our first time here and first time in meeting family for almost a year and came away feeling extremely happy.Well done to all concerned and we shall most certainly be back.

Booked on the basis of the very good reviews here but sadly very disappointed. Roast beef was tasteless and almost inedibly tough and chewy. There were no green vegetables and to cap it all a hair in the gravy. Would certainly not return I’m afraid.

Came here for dinner pre Blenheim Christmas light trail with the family. Thoroughly enjoyed the food, great value for money. Would recommend for a hearty pub meal with excellent service.

Excellent food at very reasonable prices compared to other pubs in the area, had a lovely sandwich with crisps and salad during lunch hour from work.

Lunch meal. Delicious chicken pie for my wife and I opted for the Lamb Kebab. quite an unusual menu option, but well worth it! The suet crusted pie was amazing. 😃 beer is well kept!

We are staying at the caravan club site at Bladon chains and booked a table at this public house for a family of four . We arrived and was shown to our table and ask if we would like a drink whilst we looked at the menu . The pub staff and management were very friendly and the made us feel very welcome . We ordered our meal and the wait time was very good ,The food arrived and the quality and portion size was one of the best we have experienced in a long time !! We were asked if we required any more drinks and were served with them in a very short time . We all enjoyed our meals and could not fault any think with the black prince it was faultless . We were invited to look at the desert menu but we were really full !!! A great venue at a great price and we will return thank you for a great night

We visited the Black Prince pub on 28 September before taking an afternoon walk in nearby Blenheim Park (ask the staff how to get there by a public footpath) We had the best fish and chips we have enjoyed in a long while. The haddock was fresh and tasty and wrapped in a very light batter and accompanied by proper home made chips and garden peas. We finished with three flavours of delicious ice cream - chocolate, raspberry sorbet and vanilla. The staff were friendly and efficient. Covid rules were being scrupulously observed, even by the Prince himself, standing in the corner (see photo). We shall be back.

You guys literally saved our day.We’re just visiting the area to wind down & had been sooooo disappointed visiting the Palace that day but the lunch at your pub just brightened our moods completely.Staff were great. Even sitting inside we felt safe with social distancing, etc.

We booked when visiting the local area, we walked from the centre of Woodstock which only took 5 minutes.The pub is set by the side of the river and is really prettyWe sat inside and were seated quickly, we ordered drinks which came straight away. The service was really good and friendly. Staff wore masks and tables were spaced apart. We ordered the special curry and i just had soup for a main as i wasnt very hungry. My husband really enjoyed his curry he said it was very good. My soup was also homemade and very tasty. I had a side of calamari which wasn't the best, i think it was probably frozen and i have had better but overall we enjoyed our meal.The meal and drinks came to £35 which was reasonable. Would recommend for simple home cooked pub grub. Nothing fancy but still tasty!!

We had a delicious meal in this delightful pub which is full of character. Unlike some of the pubs in Woodstock, we were made to feel very welcome at the Black Prince. We would recommend the chicken pie - the pastry was scrumptious. If we ever visit Woodstock again, we will definitely return to this lovely inn.

Stopped off here with a couple of my girlie friends for Sunday lunch, wow it was fab. Staff were super friendly, car parking right at the rear which was great. It’s also right by the river so a lovely setting on a Sunday afternoon. Very happy girls :)

The location is good, right next to a small river, and with access to the Blenheim estate just over the A44 from the pub, so ideal for a pub walk. The service was very friendly and efficient and the food was great. The ham and chicken pie was just fabulous.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here. Very well organised for Covid. Tables well separated with table service provided. Food was excellent. Had seen other reviews mentioning the chicken and ham pie.... and it was as good as expected! The white chocolate cheesecake was gorgeous too.

My wife and I have eaten here many times when staying in Woodstock. I can only give this pub plus points. Excellent service. Excellent food. And a lovely welcome when we visit. The Sunday roast is one of the best of any where I have been. Would definitely recommend and we will see you all soon.

Lovely setting by the river, fast and efficient service. The chicken and ham pie is the best I’ve ever had, the bean burger was also well received. After the delicious home cooked food we walked the water meadows with our dog. Will definitely return to this pub- have already told some friends to visit.

We visited for an evening meal. Initially we requested a table for 6pm but they were fully booked. We decided to ring back and ask for a later table and was then offered 8pm which we accepted. On arrival at 7.45 the car park was empty. We had a very nice meal, food was lovely and the safety regarding COVID was very well adhered too. Dogs are allowed, absolutely no problem with that, but 2 young girls came in with dogs. They asked for multiple dog bowls and to our amazement proceeded to actually mix up dog food and biscuits on the table whilst we were eating on the next table. The pub staff should surely not allow this. We have a dog but would never do that in an eatery. After eating the dogs sat on the seats at the table, sniffing and licking it! Disgusting. Shame staff accommodated it and didn’t stop this behaviour.
