Wow, exceptional food. Pulled Brisket Crumpet with vintage cheddar, Miso Hungry burger (swapped blue cheese for Brie), beer battered onion rings, triple cooked chips. On the burger was a beef pattie, miso and honey pulled pork, Cotswold brie, crispy onion, tomato, gherkins, garlic and lime coleslaw. Meant to take photos but tucked straight in. Great wine selection, pricey but you get what you pay for. All of it was absolutely delicious. Lovely staff who served us too, Very friendly. Contemplating a dessert! We've never had less than a 5* meal and service here. We were served by Eleanor, Georgia and Luke

Lovely pub restaurant with pleasant staff. the issue was the food. Nice salmon starter, I had to send back the muscles, they were very strange and did not smell nice. The steak my wife had was expensive and average.

It's a nice pub, but our meal experience was pretty bad! My dish (sole) was overcooked and tough, and so were its vegetables - and it was quite pricey too. My negative comment was met with defensiveness from the deputy manager which escalated into an argument - badly handled and not a good way to finish a pleasant night out with friends. Beer excellent, bar staff great - just that one difficult person.

I live in Ramsden…admittedly not one of the big posh houses but I am local and have been for four years. I’ve been to this pub a dozen - 20 times and have had a couple of nice experiences and many many bad ones. Some of the staff are excellent, and match to what the pub seems to be aspiring to. Other members of staff are at best not very good at their jobs or worse, couldn’t care less and need to rethink their career choices. It doesn’t matter how pretty you make the decor if you don’t have the fundamentals correct everything else is just window dressing. And this is not a cheap pub. As a family we haven’t got loads of disposable cash every month. But we like to visit a local pub on a Saturday afternoon before going home to cook tea. It’s become a bit of a tradition. And the last place I will ever take my family again would be this pub. Having paid £22.50 for two cokes, a lemonade and two local pints. I asked for the pints to be topped up as the last centimetre and a half was head. If you buy a pint you should get a pint and if you ask for it to be topped up you shouldn’t be made to feel like you’ve committed some sort of cardinal sin. The response I got from the “head” barman was an almost sarcastic dribble put into one of the pints as if to say that’s your pint you can take it or leave it. That’s fine, now that that is crystal clear…I’ll leave it. Last year my family were away and I had a Friday evening to myself. I decided to walk down to the pub and have a bar snack and a couple of pints. I had the most amazing portion of fat beautifully cooked whitebait. A perfect snack to go with my beer. Large portion with homemade tartar sauce priced at £4.50. Sat outside, sun shining life was good. Told my wife how nice it was and took her down to do the same a week later as the kids were at a sleepover. Ordered a couple of pints and ordered the whitebait….now at £5.50 for some reason. It came out and had been reduced by a third. So it wasn’t really a portion anymore it was a snackette. I tell that story because that’s what this place is in a nutshell. Clearly that barsnack was way to good value for money and had to go. Put the price up and reduce the portion. This is the essence of the Royal Oak and they will never get another penny from me. Try the Fox in Leafield instead or some of the pubs with real character in Charlbury.

My husband and I met friends for dinner. I first ordered scotch egg for starter, which was absolutely delicious, then I ordered the Burger for mains. That was tasty but the rest of the plate was just piled with chips , with no care or thought of the presentation at all. When I asked the lady who served us , why there was no salad or even a few mushrooms, she replied it’s not summer for a salad and not everyone likes mushrooms. I was not at all impressed with her attitude either. She didn’t offer an apology for the way the food was just thrown into the plate and didn’t try to rectify it. And I was not offered anymore options or anything off the bill. One of our friends ordered the fish and she said it was extremely blan too. We are local to the area and have always loved the food here, so we were really disappointed on this occasion. Will not be recommending to anyone.

We opted for a combination of small plates as a light lunch last Friday. Delicious and perfectly cooked scotch eggs, along with a robust pistachio and cognac sausage roll, and beetroot and goats cheese tarts. Small plates by name and nature, but special dishes and with a side of truffle and parmesan fries just what the doctor ordered after a wintery walk. Thoroughly recommended.

I went with my family for lunch and was so disappointed with the standard of the food, for a lot of money. I had the parsnip and pear soup, which tasted of neither. Then we had the 6 small plates for £38. Tiny bob of prawn cocktail on a crumpet (so weird, very M&S), great lump of sausage roll, about 8 chestnuts which were impossible to peel because of the way they had been roasted. Minute beetroot tart. I unwisely chose roast partridge as a main course, £32, partridge has very little meat on it and it was very difficult to get any meat off it at all, it came with a glutinous stuffing and even more glutinous jam-like mess of prunes. I enoyed nothing about this dish. Boiled sprouts for £5 tasted of nothing. The parmesan chips were fine. Side of pigs in blankets, personal taste but I like sausages well done, these were pale and damp. I didn't bother with a pudding. The menu sounds very nice from the descriptions but not in practice. Two of the party had the burger at £19 which was OK. I'm not going again! We went a year and two years ago and it was not so expensive and much better. Painful to think of the waste of money. About £170 for the soup, 6 small plates, 4 mains and 3 sides.

The staff were really great fun (especially Shannon) and the restaurant’s steak was absolutely insane, definitely amongst the best we have ever had! Would recommend anyone to stay here and enjoy what this beautiful place has to offer! We will be back!

I really like this place normally but I drove 30 mins to get there with my sons today for a Sunday lunch treat and the restaurant was half empty. I asked to sit at a nice comfy big table but we were adamantly told by the manager that we had to sit at a small table for 3 close to the bar. We are all tall and it felt really pokey and squashed. I assumed this was because bookings were coming but the other tables remained empty the whole time and it was ridiculous that the manager was so pedantic and refused to let us sit elsewhere even when I has asked. She could have easily put us on a better table. I run my own business and always try and give the customers the best experience. Clearly not the case here!!!! Plus the staff looked knackered, one was crying on arrival and as another customer has said, the flowers were all wilting on the tables. I also had to constantly get the staff's attention even though it was half empty. The manager was more intent on setting up the new tables as opposed to serving customers. Someone needs to sort the staff out a bit I think - who's in charge?? Food good but not good enough for such poor treatment. I should say our actual waitress was lovely and tried hard. Shame about the management.

Really wonderful pub. Great location , beautiful inside and out and the drinks were lovely. But…. We went for a roast dinner and although what we had was delicious, we all left hungry due to to tiny portion sizes. I feel £23 for a roast you should feel atleast comfortably full. We actually went home and ate again! We arrived at 2 and the waitress was lovely, so not sure if that’s the last seating time and ran out of food maybe? Anyway, Like I say wonderful place, but for the price I don’t think I’d eat Sunday lunch here again unfortunately.

We stopped off at The Royal Oak after a lovely walk in the sunshine on the Easter weekend and got a lovely table in the courtyard out the back. Firstly, the setting is lovely. So many nice tables to sit at with different spots to have a private drink or bite. We ordered from the mixed small plates and were not disappointed. It was delicious, and there was nothing left on any plates. This was the second time visiting and we had the small plates on the previous trip and again thoroughly enjoyed it and were hoping for the same menu, but the new choice was just as creative and delicious. Will definitely be going back!

Took my wife here today for a Mother’s Day treat, and on first impressions was very lovely, beautiful scenic pub with lots of charm and atmosphere. But unfortunately that’s were it ends, have left very disappointed. The service was good and efficient, but the food not great, I had the brisket burger which was okay but with a few fries on the plate looked very sparse not great value for money, my wife had the sea bream which looked lovely but soon realised the fillet of fish was undercooked in the middle and quite raw, We didn’t make a fuss, my wife just left the fish, and when the plates were collected the waitress asked if everything was to our liking and my wife mentioned that the fish was raw in the middle, the waitress took the plates and said she would relay this to the manager, which to be honest didn’t really bother us as it was Mother’s Day and it was quite busy, so we put it down to a bad experience, we were contemplating having another drink but I decided to get the bill and as I turned to ask, the manager/waitress was there with our bill, she just said I have taken off the sea bream, and the whole demeanour changed it felt awkward and the friendliness had disappeared, there was no apology regarding the undercooked food or explanation, so needless to say we left, which was disappointing as I really wanted like the pub as we have just moved to the area. Probably wouldn’t visit again which is a shame

Following previously living in Ramsden for nearly 18 years’, I wanted to experience the Royal Oak again, and was really excited to do so, but obviously it’s now under new ownership. The staff were fantastic, but the food served was not great at all. We initially ordered meat balls and calamari to start, then beef and lamb as mains, with a side order of cauliflower cheese. The starters arrived in likely less than two minutes, evidencing the calamari had been dipped in the fryer and the meat balls popped in the microwave - as they were cold in the centre. We decided to give this the benefit of the doubt, say nothing, and await the mains…. The mains arrived, which were essentially overcooked well done beef, soft roast potatoes, reheated yorkshires, but fantastic cabbage. Our side order of cauliflower cheese was undercooked cauliflower with what must have been a few spoons of cheese sauce on the top - ie not cauliflower cheese you would expect. My partners lamb was unfortunately an overcooked/reheated round of fatty meat she couldn’t even cut. In the end she had to walk over and find the waitress to request a steak knife to try and cut her meat, a spoon for cauliflower cheese, as there was nothing to serve it with, and a pot of gravy in the hope that could make it better…. As you can imagine we declined desert/third course. Bill for two shocking roast dinners with two drinks £88… Again, I maintain the staff were great, but the quality of the food absolutely did not match the price paid. I’d be happy to visit again to educate their chef. As I say, great cabbage though…. Kind regards, Tanoa

Great food, great beer, great wine, plenty of board games, and roaring fire too! Bar manager Ryan, and his team could not have been more helpful. Ryan even gave us a lift home, although I’m not sure he will be dishing those out regularly. I would highly recommend this pub/restaurant, it is very well appointed with excellent outdoor dining set in a courtyard garden. The food is top notch with a wide range of choices from a contemporary menu. And the staff are very attentive, providing great service throughout....

Reallly lovely food. Modern menu, refreshing for The Cotswolds. Had a beetroot and ricotta salad followed by turbot with madras sauce. Very yummy. We ate outside which is charming, as is the main restaurant. The staff were all friendly and efficient too. Very enjoyable evening.

The welcome could not have been warmer or the service more efficient and cheery. The roasts were really good and generous and the wine excellent from a good selection. This was a birthday celebration at our newly re-opened local and we were not disappointed.

Highly, highly recommended. A real foodies menu with a menu offering dishes far from the usual pub fare. We had an excellent steak, red mullet risotto, chuck and short rib burger, beetroot salad. Service was exceptional and, whilst we didn't sit outside, the outside seating...

A lot of money has clearly been spent renovating this old favourite and it, indeed, looks lovely with a wide array of plants, Farrow & Ball paint throughout and so on but the owners have perhaps forgotten that this is first and foremost a restaurant....

One of the little gems in the Cotswolds. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. We had our dog with us and even a bowl of water was brought for him. The Red Mullet we had was excellent however a small dish so we ordered in a hurry some chips aside. But was delicious. On to the next time, hope they survive now the 3th lockdown.

Stayed the night in charming Attic room which lives up to its romantic name and looks down upon the village church opposite. We even had our own little decorated Christmas tree, magical. We have eaten here before. I take no pride in being difficult to please and the relief of knowing that the food will be fabulous is wonderful. As are the staff, all of them.2020’s bright spot - discovering the newly-reopened Royal Oak, now a favourite.

I visited here with a friend on a cold day in November for Sunday lunch. First impressions are everything and the pub gets this totally right. The interior is absolutely stunning, it’s bright, light and airy but also cosy and welcoming. We ordered drinks and then two roast beef dinners. The food was absolutely incredible, good portion size for the price, succulent beef, crispy roasties, incredible gravy. Kudos to the kitchen team. The pub was busy with lots of happy customers but there was the appropriate Covid measures in place which is always reassuring.Next we ordered two sticky toffee puddings with stout ucs cream which was just to die for. A big portion, moist cake and lovely sauce with a really creamy homemade ice cream. I also visited here in the summer and enjoyed an iced coffee in the beautiful sun trap of a garden, so this pub really can do it all. All in all a very impressive visit, I will definitely be going back!

Excellent food, wine and service on a cold post-lockdown December evening in the ‘tent’ which was cosy and intimate with heaters to keep us toasty warm. Will definitely be back again to try dining in the ‘barn’ or even just a drink in the bar when we get back to tier 1!

Excellent last (couple) of pints before lockdown V2 and they had gone all out in making sure the business was safe and was dressed to impress. The atmosphere was lovely and decorated to the nines, such a shame we have to wait what will feel like a lifetime before we can go back.

We live locally and this was our first visit to the newly reopened Royal Oak. Large outdoor covered area "the tent" meant we could eat outside on a very wet day. Clear covid precautions in operation. Lovely food.

A friend and I visited with two young children for Monday lunch - superb menu (note - no 'kids menu' but they will do children sized portions from the main menu) - £20 for two or £25 for three courses and the food was top notch! I have been out to various pubs since July and this is up there as one of the best in West Oxfordshire. I am really looking forward to coming back here with my husband for my birthday - I am confident it will be even more lovely on a cold December evening with the fire roaring! The team are doing their best to be 'Covid secure' .... I really hope for their sake that there is no local lockdown ... and if there that they bounce back from it. We will definitely be visiting again to support this establishment.

Everything was good about our visit, from our welcome onwards. A beautifully refurbished Cotswold pub, with a friendly, cosy atmosphere. Our Sunday roast was perfectly cooked, very tasty starters and desserts too, and good value for money. The service was excellent, friendly but efficient and attentive. The Covid-19 precautions were good too, so we felt comfortable and safe.Great to see this pub back, as good as it has ever been, if not better.

We came in on a Friday night at 6:30pm on the off chance we could get a table. Very accommodating whilst already busy with locals having drinks/meals. We were served promptly and chose two meals from the ‘favourites’ board. Good quality food, cooked well and really tasty. Reasonably priced too with generous portions. Our only negative was that the guy on the bar was completely swamped! People waiting to be served and working the restaurant too… he remained courteous and attentive whilst stretched but in our opinion there should have been another staff member as small errors in the orders, not bringing condiments etc when requested due to his busyness could have been easily avoided. All in all though a great place to come for an impromptu evening meal. Thank you
