Had a few in there before my train left going back to Peterborough,the pub is old school full of characters I enjoyed it and I would definitely use it again,respect the locals it’s there pub

Visiting from Canada, I went into the Black Garter for a pint or 3 after shopping a bit at Grainger Market. The first barmaid was obviously rude and / or racist as i was standing there for a good 3 or 4 minutes; there was nobody else waiting to be served but she still wouldn't serve me. Then another waitress came along and she was very friendly and poured me a perfect cold John Smith's. In fact she is the one who took my pic standing at the bar. Met a wonderful group of people from Hebburn who knew friends in common, as I used to live in Newcastle 25 years ago before I moved to Canada. Met a friendly chap next table who had many an amusing tale to tell. Later I was told this is probably the roughest bar in Newcastle! LOL ....but I didn't feel that way at all when i was in there. I got asked to spare a cigarette twice by the same 2 guys standing outside -- I gave him a cigarette the first time but not the second time. But there was no trouble when I said "Jez, share the thing guys, they're so expensive!" No idea if the place deserves the nasty reputation it currently has. But I felt just fine in there and actually had a very enjoyable afternoon. I gave only 3 stars for service because of the first waitress who chose to blatantly ignore me. Rest was fine.

Absolutely a wonderful experience. I cannot say anything other than fantastic.

Amazing weekend in the black garter, Pamela and Donna's customer service made it even better, only change I would make is some accommodation added.

Amazing friendly place, feels like family, I go there to do singing Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and never had any issues from the staff, they always helped me when I needed help, They’re Polite, Friendly and Lovely!’ Want a night out in a friendly environment? Wow what an amazing pub and staff nothing was too much trouble very attentive staff and efficient. We where up visiting friends ended up in for the night fantastic customers and entertainment would highly recommend if in the area you won't regret it.

Local pub, looks to have many regular customers. Drinks are reasonably priced. It was very busy when we visited.

When in the toon it's a must bar to call in for a beer good geordie hospitality

I visited here by myself and I felt very much like an outsider, which is understandable: this is a local's bar. Karaoke was fun and the drinks cheap, the people can be quite rowdy.

As a football fan this is a fantastic spot pints are just over 3 quid and the atmosphere is always great. Make a point of visiting everytime we travel to Newcastle

Booked table to watch nufc v psg champions league match, the service was top rank and the staff were great. The atmosphere of the bar was the best I've seen in Newcastle.

Had been in before with the guys years ago so tried it on a Friday afternoon with wife . Asked one of the regulars if the seats and table were being used she said no but watch you wallets and handbags on reading other reviews others had said the same thing so drank our drinks and left

No messing around or you’ll get it from the landlady - a wee Yorkshire lass that can deal with the most boisterous customers! Weekends great evenings with Ophelia Balls and DJ Chris Parker. We’ll be back, definitely recommend!

Called in here for a few drinks while out for a friend's birthday on Sunday.. what a night we had friendly staff good range of drinks and shots.. karaoke was brilliant we even got up to sing.. a propa traditional boozer with no airs or graces. Fantastic local in the city centre.. will definitely be back well done team garter.

Great bar in a great location, drinks are reasonably priced and has live sport on TV with a fantastic atmosphere especially on Toon match days. Staff are friendly and polite and the Manager is fantastic!!

New barmaid on today called Wendy... She must be on speed or have OCD or summit like that! I normally only have a pint but she has forced me to have 3 pints so far! and better still during that time she has never stopped cleaning! Even hoyed a local lout out for trying to sell summit! She shouted Oi Out! Ye knar why! - deffo a no nonsense women! (She's a Geordie equivalent to a Peggy Mitchell!) I'll pop back next week for another afternoon of entertainment!

Popped in on a friday night for 1 or 2 drinks with friends we stayed all night amazing atmosphere donna,john and jess made us feel very welcome and were the main reasons we stayed all night along with the other customers so friendly and the clean crisp cheap drinks thankyou we will definitely be back

Early morning regulars were already settled in supping John Smith's, Newcastle Brown and lager. Friendly if subdued atmosphere. Staff were polite, and prices reasonable, but this was a Wednesday as well so probably not the best time to judge.

Great atmosphere and cheaper drink than most places friday night are brilliant Ophilia Balls is on great laugh xx
