The Black Dog in Cheshire West and Chester

The members of staff were appalling, there was a wake taking place and the owner of the establishment began screaming at a delivery driver calling him a C***. I have never experienced such foul behaviour before. They should really be ashamed.

Now under new management/ownership and renamed the Waverton Arms had a lovely meal all freshly made, the service was excellent and all staff friendly.

I did write a private message but have been ignored. We visited yesterday at 2pm, the car park was empty which should have sounded alarm bells. We ordered drinks, a dizzy blonde and a moretti and went to sit outside. 5 minutes later we were advised that they did not have any draft beer. We asked what other lagers they had but the barman didn’t know, he offered to go and look but we just ordered another half of moretti. We waited approximately 20 minutes with no sign of the barman or our drinks. We left! Very disappointing but based on the empty bar/restaurant, previous bad reviews and lack of response we shouldn’t be surprised. We won’t be returning. Such a shame! Update; Received a reply on Facebook messenger and was called a liar! Absolutely astounded! It’s laughable really! Avoid!

Visited here after going to Crocky Trail for the afternoon. Excited to have aSunday Roast with bottomless roasties, gravy, yorkshire puddings, as advertised! Unfortunately when we arrived they were out of Beef, no big deal. When the food arrived it was ok, sent feedback directly to Pub about 'bottomless' options. Cauliflower cheese was very tasty. Value for kids roasts is really good considering you get drink, roast and icecream cone all for £5. Kids chicken burger wasn't necessarily a burger, more like two chicken nuggets in a bun.

Lovely Easter Sunday lunch here today with family. Roast beef was excellent and the veg choice was great. Had sticky toffee pudding and it's probably the nicest lightest one I've ever had. Staff are attentive and really pleasant. I would recommend a visit especially in the warmer months to come when the outdoor 'igloo' pods will be great!

I seldom give 1 star reviews - but after visiting the Black Dog on and off for the last 30 years, normally after a 'bells and whistles' relaunch - this place never fails to disappoint. I went there on Sunday 20th March, me, mum, sister, daughter and step daughter. Hendricks and Tonic - one of their highlighted cocktails - Cheshire Vibes - Hendricks, Cucumber Tonic and swirls of cucumber - they had no cucumber and no cucumber tonic. 2 white wine spritzers - well I've never seen a spritzer made with white wine and lime juice - I thought it looked more line a urine sample than a drink - but didn't relise until I saw the itemised bill there was no soda (or even lemonade) but there were 2 splashes of lime juice (yes they charge for a splash of lime juice) - Maybe this is 'Black Dog Cocktail' - white wine and lime juice? Blood Mary - couldn't taste the vodka, and rather than the standard garnish of a stick of celery - it had a spring onion in it! Food - roast beef - wasn't sure whether I should eat it or take it to a cobbler and ask him to resole my shoe with it. Place was empty (2 other tables occupied) and cold - a group of girls walked in and walked out when they saw the very limited menu. There were also walk in customers being turned away - food isn't being served? Bizarre. Every thing was slow and wrong - even had to push all the empty glasses to the end of the table and ask to have them cleared, the puddings - meringue wasn't cooked properly, starters were wrong - I could go on. Will I be back - of course not - but probably yes when it is relaunched in about 3 years time with a 'bells and whistles' advert in the local rag.

Just had a lovely meal here, to end a wonderful break in Chester. Stumbled upon this unassuming pub on the main road out of the town and thought we’d give it a try, after reading good reviews and seeing the food pics. First impressions from the car park were very positive - they have dining domes out the back. A good idea for “safe” social gatherings and adds some wow factor to the experience. Upon entering, we were welcomed with a smile from the lady host and I must say, the interior decor is rather special. Very nice design, homely yet cool and noticeably very clean! The menu was simple yet innovative. Good choice of dishes and some interesting ingredients used. The black pudding Bon Bons, duck main and roasted caramelised carrots were highlights. The chef was kind enough to give us a complimentary dessert - which was listed on the menu simply as “Surprise”. Well, it was a very pleasant surprise as it was his take on Bombe Alaska, but with lemon curd inside - perfect, light, tangy and not too sweet. Good end to the meal. Service was friendly and attentive throughout. A nice touch was the Chef Owner, Matt, coming out to talk with us, asking how the food was and telling us a bit more about the business and his philosophy on food. Matt’s passion for his craft and dedication for his business was clear to see and really inspiring. I wish him and The Black Dog all the best with the future - if the food and service stays as good as this, I know he will be a huge success. Would recommend everyone to try out this place 5/5

We had our early Valentine’s meal last night. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our choices. The presentation of the food was stylish, and very tasty. The chef had worked hard in making the flavours work together especially liked the cauliflower veloute. Thank you for an enjoyable evening.

Booked online, received confirmation of booking. And another confirmation the week before. We travelled an hour and a half to get there, even booked and paid for a hotel in Chester so we could both have a drink as it was my partners birthday. Turned up and the place was completely shut. Meaning we had to go all the way back into Chester, walked around in the rain to try and find somewhere to eat. Sent an email a couple of days later explaining the situation and how unhappy I was. Waited for a response to explain themselves, as didn’t want to come straight on here for a bad review. But I got no response what so ever, email was completely ignored. Shocking.

A quirky and delicious meal in a lovely setting. Will want to try the outside pods next time. Good atmosphere

We made a booking to meet family to celebrate our engagement, having travelled over from Lancashire only to find the restaurant completely closed! We couldn't get in anywhere else locally as it was a Saturday night so ended up travelling straight back home. There was no mention on social media and we'd even received confirmation of the booking the day before. Gave the restaurant the time to respond before leaving this review out of courtesy but received a pathetic response with no apology for the inconvenience, ignored the message completely and solely informed us that the restaurant is now back open. Shocking all around and completely ruined what should have been a special occasion.

Made a table reservation via main website. Nowhere on the website did it say the restaurant was currently closed. Received email confirmation of my booking, and even a reminder asking me to confirm my attendance two days before. Booked to meet a friend who had travelled a long way. Arrived to find the place was all locked up. Called no answer finally, managed to find a member of staff in the car park he informed me they aren’t open. Wasn’t even interested or concerned that I had a booking. definitely wouldn’t return or recommend a visit here.

We Have just left the black dog incredibly disappointed after traveling there for my partner’s birthday. The food was terrible and the service was even worse. We were greeted by a very miserable waitress who didn’t even properly turn around while telling us she’d be with us in a minute. Once we ordered our first round of drinks we were not asked again if we wanted drinks I had to go and ask for a second drink. We were not checked on once while eating. Given that we were one of three tables in the restaurant and there were two floor staff, there’s little excuse for this shocking service. My starter was inedible and when they came to clear my plate the waitress could see it wasn’t touched yet the waitress didn’t ask how the food was she just cleared the plates. My daughter’s main was also terrible, it was supposed to be a cottage pie but it consisted of a mould of pulled beef and a few peas under mash. The meat was very chewy, so she ate the mash and carrots. Our mains were average at best and for the quality of food that came out to us, they were incredibly over priced. The same waitress came to ask if we were finished, as she took the plates she didn’t ask if we would like the dessert menu or the bill she just walked away. I sat there for 10 minutes thinking she would return but she did not so I went to the bar to pay. I told who I assumed was the supervisor on shift how disappointed I was with both the service and food. The lady gave a mumble of an apology saying ‘sorry about the service’ and took my starter off the bill, still expecting me to pay £77. At that point I was lost for words and paid the bill. On reflection the meal and experience wasn’t worth even half the cost! If you have booked to dine here I would strongly recommend booking elsewhere.

Positives Staff were very accommodating and allowed us to change our booking time at short notice, Staff were polite throughout visit Pub is lovely We had an outdoor pod which was nicely heated and different Negatives Not a lot on the menu to choose from Wait time for drinks and food was extensive Food was not very nice, mushroom starter was slimy with a strange aftertaste and chicken burger was coated in a batter which tasted only of grease. Onion ring which topped the burger had an old chip attached to it. Wouldn’t go back, lovely venue and it’s a shame as so much more could be made of it as it looks like there are some really ambitious ideas (the pods were a nice touch).

Covid: - we called ahead and asked to book a dome, specifically because two of our party were high risk (Why else would anyone be eating outside xmas eve!!) they told us that’s fine and it’s Covid safe - we called on the day to ask/ check if it’s ok that anyone serving us wore a mask. Explained 2 high risk individuals and one pregnant also. So very high risk. The manager confirmed this would be completely fine and of course. (Lunchtime of a 5pm booking) - we got there and the waitress entered the dome with no mask, we asked that she wore a mask or someone else serve us and explained why and that we did check with the manager - the manager came out 15 mins later - no mask, and then said ok - whilst they then served us with a mask, at the end the initial girl came back in with no mask, and then the manager came in cleaning the table leaning over the guests without a mask - we gave up, we had had to ask multiple times and they repeatedly came back in with no mask. - Whilst I know it is not mandatory by the government, they could have just said that’s not possible on the phone and we would not have gone. What happened made everyone feel uncomfortable and at risk Food/ drink - drinks took over 45 to arrive from us sitting down - food was very very average, arrived in stages and was pretty bland. Setting/ atmosphere - we arrived to a table with a pile of cutlery in the middle and napkins. That’s it. Not the Christmas Eve meal we expected and looked completely unset and poor. Service - whilst the 2 girls who mainly served us were both lovely and this is no reflection on them. The first was rude and the manager was a joke- to even come back in without a mask was laughable and just awful customer service. On top of that 45 mins for a drink, no table set… I could go on… Poor poor poor- do not waste you’re money

Visiting from Edinburgh and found this place by seeing an article on a google feed about their domes. I booked a table via the website 10 days in advance of our planned visit, and in the comments noted we'd like their afternoon tea. After six days with no response I phoned up to check and they had no details. I explained I requested afternoon tea to be told that as they aren't doing them due to Covid restrictions this wouldn't be possible. Could they not have informed me of this? I asked if there were any spaces for dinner but even with four days notice only 1630 or 1730 times were available. We booked the 1730 slot for Wednesday afternoon and provided card details for a £20 holding deposit. Job done...or so we thought. The day before, we were enjoying some cocktails in Chester to get a phone call from the Black Dog at 1745 asking if we had a booking with them as it was passed the time. I explained it was the following day so she checked but guess what? No booking. Only the 1630 slot was free so as we'd planned some things to do it wasn't going to be an option. We'd rather go somewhere that has some degree of organisation and honour/value a customer booking. But hey, I wasn't going to have the £20 taken. Thank you very much, so gracious of you.

Went over the weekend Lovely fresh food batter on the fish was light and fresh, the spiced carrot soup was delicious well worth a visit will be back again

we were fit in as a table of 12 with very late notice on a busy weekend evening. We half expected to be told we couldn't eat but what i assume was the owner/manager advised the barman we certainly could be seated. The food was outstanding, especially my King prawn and pea risotto and the service matched the food.

Great Carvery. The roast beef and chicken were both succulent and the roasties were superb. A meal for two, plus two drinks and a sweet each at around £38 is also great value these days.

I enjoyed the carvery but if you like mash this is not the place for you. Plates were brought out cold and my partner found a hair in the carrots. You will have to make your own decision on this one x

Good pub with nice service and great food! Pigs in blankets to start I mean hell yes! Great way to start any meal. The pie and cod risotto were great as well. Would recommend to anyone.

I came to the Black Dog with my Grandma and Grandad and the staff were very friendly and chatted to us which was very nice. They helped out my sister who is gluten free taking her through what she can and can’t have which was helpful. The food was really nice all fresh and everyone enjoyed it. We will defiantly come again for lunch or dinner.

Called for a quick lunch which was fine. Very quiet , and I do wonder if this place advertises enough.

We were driving by and decided at the last second to eat here and we're glad that we did. We saw that they were serving a carvery and decided to try that out since it looked quite tasty. There was a good selection and the meats were lovely, all the meal together was pretty good, I would say 'above average'. I've tasted better and I've tasted much worse but the herbs added gave it a nice earthy taste. When serving ourselves the lids on the pots were a little awkward, I would think a different warming tray layout would work better more like a buffet style setup.

Been here a few times for sunday dinner and both times were lovely, visited again today and me and my mum were very disappointed with the food. The roast potatoes were warm at best, the Yorkshire puddings were full of grease, and the gravy was very watery, greasy and tasteless, staff watched us struggle to get to the veg as they did not take the lids off any of the food and the lids were very hot.. left without finishing or paying for the food which we have never done anywhere before.. such a shame as it was lovely the first few times we visited, very disappointed and unfortunately wont be returning.

First time we've been to The Black Dog for a meal. good food well priced, pleasant, helpful, friendly staff, good atmosphere in pleasant surroundings.

Have been earlier on this year for a meal but this time popped in for lunch. Such personal service compared to others which are part of a chain. A lovely menu which is more individual than other restaurants. The staff were lovely, so helpful and friendly. Have a friend at the moment in hospital long-term and when she is out we are going for lunch, if just for the avocado on sourdough!

Stopped here on Wednesday 24th July for a bite to eat. Like to give a big shout out to Lisa from Marty and Jackie who was our waitress. All I will say is THANK YOU Lisa. Grub is great, service was superb. Lisa recommended the halloumi fries. Oh my God, they were superb. No hesitation in recommending here.

Sunday lunch at the Black Dog, Barry and his staff A1 service. Food was 10/10, fresh and I couldn't fault it.

We visited to treat my Aunt to lunch, we had not booked but had a lovely table by the window. The service was friendly and efficient. We all plumped for Ham, Egg and Chips which arrived very promptly and was delicious. They were happy to provide a box for the surplus ham to be taken home.

It's safe to return to the Black Dog. We had tried the place a couple of years ago after it had been renovated. The place itself was beautifully done but the food was more or less rubbish so we didn't go back. Now we have tried again with the new management and we were very happy.with our visit. Very decent pub food, pleasant staff and management, and dog friendly. We are happy to recommend it.

Had a trip to the ice cream farm today, and on our way home we spotted this lovely little pub so decided we should have some dinner.

Have not frequented the Black Dog for many years. Decided to pop in on the 13th of June 2019. Fabulous atmosphere, ambiance. Was greeted by a most hospitable member of a fabulous and welcoming team, his name was Barry. We decided, my friend and l, to try the carvery. Well l have to say, one of the tastiest, l have ever had, in the area, of Chester, north, south Cheshire. Fully and truly recommend The Black Dog. Enjoy.

Wow what a find, following a trip out with the family we stopped off for a bite to eat and from the moment we entered I was blown away by the welcome, food and service.Barry the Gentleman who looked after us was amazing throughout giving up time for a chat with the kids, my wife and I . The food was fresh and quickly delivered, I will be definitely returning again soon Thank you Barry and team, 5 star

A friend and I stopped off here half way during a very wet cycle ride. The owners were extremely friendly and even offered to put some of our clothes in the dryer. We had an absolute feast and all 3 courses were amazing.

Stopped here on the way back from bolesworth horse show and we were very impressed with the service and food. The staff were very friendly and the food was very good and served quickly. The chips were the best I have had in a long time!

Had a superb carvery today, the meal (beef, ham and turkey) apparently is from a local farm just a few fields away and not only was it fantastic, it was well cooked. The portion size is very generous and there is a good selection of veg, stuffing balls and pigs in blankets! Staff were very friendly and went out their way to talk to you and make sure you were happy with the food.

Dined here today, food was absolutely amazing. Highly recommend the steak and ale pie!! Our server was Sophie who was extremely friendly and went above and beyond to make our dining experience a fabulous one. Will definitely be returning. Thank you :-)

Stopped for first time after reading great food reviews. Ordered starters then mains , but by then could not comfortably finish. The pie was the best had for a very long time, beautiful tasting pastry , succulent meat and gravy you could die for, could not manage dessert but will be back to try if leaving out starters

Called to arrange our table with a lady called Alice who was super helpful and friendly on the phone! Arrived to a smiley and pleasant greeting! Food was delicious and very well priced for the quality! Couldn’t fault our trip here, will visit next time we’re in the area!

Nice place, friendly staff but menu is a bit expensive for basic pub grub, only tried the burger an chips an kids meals but not too impressed not for double the price than a normal pub, ice cream for kids which was extra on top of kids meal aswell only came with 1 scoop when menu stated 2. Food quality didn’t match the price but still a nice place and nice staff.

This was our third visit to the Black Dog since the new owners took over and as on every occasion we were greeted by a smiling face before being shown to our table.

What a beautiful place clean and bright with friendly staff and amazing food , as I am coeliac I was amazed at the gluten free options on the menu but opted for the mushroom risotto and was not disappointed it was delicious I will definitely be returning again and again

Been going here for years so thought we would pop in for a quick pint orderd a carling and vodka and lemanade ...my wife said lemonade tasted flat ...my pint was dead as a dodo asked to change it another flat pint .at which point a lady came from out the back to tell me she just changed the barrel .what that has to do with it god knows i and another chap sugested gas might have gone she said it was fine.so changed it again for guest ale .....terible wont be going back sorry .

I needed somewhere to book our annual reps meeting and the black dog was a convenient location and open all day.

My lunch with friends was spoilt because of a dog at a nearby table leaving its deposit on the floor of the restaurant. The owner of the dog was unaware until asked to clean it up! I also think the staff should not fondle the dogs and then serve food. More consideration should be given to diners and as long as this is a "dog friendly pub" I shall not go back there.

We came in at 6pm and were imedietly told it was BUSY! we looked round and there were 5 tables, so definately something a miss with this information given to us by an abrupt lady on the bar! We swiftly ordered and wow the ffod was definately worth the wait and to add a young server was very lovely and helped us with some information regarding the area as we were passing by. Shaky start but food was outstanding we had Chicken supreme and a whopping steak and ale pie. We will be back again

Live locally thought Id go somewhere else for a change. After seeing new menus advertised on Facebook and drive past big sign on A41 thought I'd try Black Dog. On arrival place dead, get told as soon as I walk in there is a 30 min delay on food say that's fine. Order drinks (took a while nearly got a wrong drink) Whole place is freezing cold due to doors wide open. After 20 mins I get my own menus. Ask for a child menu - 15 min wait still no child menu. Move tables as so cold. Old lady complains she's cold can they shut doors barman shrugs shoulders. Then barman tries to give us someone else's food. Explain still waiting for a child's menu. Then chef and staff member sit opp discussing what food they haven't got. After being ignored stand again for another wait to pay for my drinks. Barman ignored me after he saw me then goes on his mobile with his back to me! Paid for drinks and left. Such a shame as place looks lovely inside and the one bit of food I did see looked nice. But was made to feel so unwelcome. Maybe a one off but drove to my local and got served in a warm pub with a smile and not ignored .

Food was excellent though the service left a it to be desired, would definitely return if back in area though!

Before reading this review it is worth noting that I have been writing trip adviser reviews for over a decade and its very rare I leave a bad review as I understand that all businesses can have an off day. However the service and attitude of the staff here has moved me to make people aware of what to expect - and also to hopefully persuade the management to take action rather than leaving offensive replies as they have done for other negative reviews. Despite the negative reviews we decided to book a family meal here and go with an open mind and support a local business. The booking itself was not easy as the person who answered the phone had to "check" to see if we could book at table. We thought this meant it would be busy - It wasn't. There were only 2 other tables in use when we arrived but despite this the first thing we were told is that there was a half hour delay on food orders. We did not have a table ready for us and were told to just sit anywhere - after which we were carefully ignored by all of the staff. After a while I decided I would have to find myself a menu as none were offered when we sat down. At this point I noticed another couple who had ordered olives to go with their wine but were still waiting for them some half hour later. I finally got the attention of a staff member and asked for a kids menu which he said he would bring then totally forgot about. I then visited the toilets and as mentioned in previous reviews they absolutely stank. Coming back to our table the chef and the KP were stood at the end of the bar going through the menu listing all the stuff they did not have! It was at this point we decided not to bother with the food and find somewhere else to eat. My wife then stood at the bar and was ignored by the lad serving. The second lad then came back - looked at my wife and then stared sending a text on his mobile instead of serving! When he finally acknowledged her existence he said he cant help as the other barman was using the till. There did not appear to be any management present and the whole set up was a shambles which is a shame as the refurb looks great and there is great potential here, but as its stands at the moment I fear there will be another "under new management" sign coming to this venue soon.

Went today for family Sunday lunch carvery was nice but cold very cold but we didn't say anything but we should of and the pint was awful flat as a pancake disappointed

Just returned from visiting the newly managed BLack Dog Pub, we have been visiting this pub for over 15 years, and never had such a poor meal and service as we had tonight. Menu hugely reduced choice, with increased prices, now very disappointing. Firstly one of our drinks was not as ordered, this followed by men not receiving their starters, the main courses came out, with the starters following them!!!!! My friends meal was missing potatoes and mine was missing jug of gravy. They apologised and knocked 20% off the bill, we did not enjoy the food, quality and service has deteriorated, we didn’t bother with desserts. unfortunately we will not be visiting in the future, such a shame as we used to love this pub.

I visited last week with my mother, her friend and my daughter. We had a lovely carvery which was the best one we have ever tried! This is now our new favourite pub for Sunday lunch and we will be returning this week. All of your staff are super friendly and even the Carver came over to us to ask how our food was which you dont normally get, its usually just bar/waiting on staff who ask! Did not get any photos unfortunately as we were all dying to eat the food as it looked amazing! Can not believe some of the bad reviews I have read as this place is honestly amazing!!

Visited yesterday and utterly disappointed with our meal. The menu description was hand raised steak and ale pie when it arrived it was only warm not hot and it resemble a Frey bentos pie in a tin. We were waiting for ages even thought it was very quiet. Would not recommend to anyone. We were so disappointed as we had eaten there many times last year before it closed. Don’t know who has taken it over but they really need to up their game on both the food and the cleanliness the toilets smelled awful and the cleaning rota had not been touched for that day and we were in at 6pm

Myself and my partner went here on Sunday to see the newly reopened black dog. As vegetarians we still like a roast dinner and so ordered 2 veggie roasts. What can I say, it was absalutely gorgeous. Our veggie nut roasts were cooked to order with separate gravy and then we tucked into the rest on the carvery table. Lovely veg, roast potatoes were perfectly done, the Yorkshire puddings were obviously home cooked and lovely and light. I love my stuffing and I was dissapointed.

Only on reading other reviews / Q&A; did I realise this was recently reopened. We loved it ! We brought our friends over from the US. Service was great - we all thought it was v friendly. I had the jerk chicken with beautiful jasmine rice. V tasty meal washed down with an excellent pint of Timothy Taylor. One daughter had gammon which she loved. Son and wife had fish and chips. All good. Really enjoyed our visit thanks.

This pub does not know the difference between a cappuccino and a latte; obviously got the trainee....and it was expensive to buy;

We have been here twice now, since the new managers taken over. We came when they had there opening night on Thursday for food and it was delicious and we came back again today to try the carvery which was lovely too. Great price aswel. Great atmosphere. Will definitely be coming back.

We called in for drinks today and to look at the refurb, please to see a nice clean pub and eating area, the staff were doing a good job keep the area clean for the next diners.

Came for carvery on opening weekend. It was okay. Reasonable amount of choice but could do with another potato option other than roast. Beef was a bit tough & not much taste.

I took my friend for lunch today, to the Black Dog, a day after it re-opened under new management. Before we had even taken our coats off and sat down, we were being asked what we wanted to drink! Upon looking at the new menu, we noticed how limited it was (only 8 mains) and how over priced it appeared to be. We both ordered the small fish and chips (£9 each) and it was very nice. However, for a pudding, we both ordered the lemon curd tart with Italian meringue, which when it was served, was very disappointing. We complained and sent them back, as on the plate was two spoonfuls of lemon curd, a row of pistachio nuts and a scoop of sorbet and no meringue - nothing like the lemon tart that we were expecting. In addition, we heard the waiter telling some other customers that they had run out of the steak and ale pie and also the fish and chips. The pub had only been open for just over an hour and had already run out of two of the eight mains dishes on the menu! Also, on the table next to us, a lady had to send her meal back, as it was cold! It was very disappointing, as my friend and I were regular customers at the old Black Dog, where the food, food choice and service, was always excellent.

Went for a meal could not fault the food lovely. The only thing was salad and vegetables missing from the main courses.

We came here after a busy day at the ice cream farm.. The decor is nice, modern and welcoming... We all had the roast beef with the exception of one roast lamb and a few kids meals. The food was nice with a good size portion of meat. The was gravey a little thin and you share pots if vedge again nice but not roasted enough that's a personal preference . You also get boiled and roast potatoes on the plate. Service was efficient and arrived quickly my only complaint has to be that no condiments were offered at all and some of us need them and staff weren't around to ask.. I would come here again if I was in the area. But Maby bring my own sauces

This is the place to go for that special meal, birthdays, anniversaries etc as well as every day eating. It is fine dining at it's best with wonderful home cooked food and a fabulous menu and lovely staff. This is the place for me if anyone is offering a treat

Very warm welcome. Lovely food. Colouring with felt tips for children! Car park at rear. Definitely recommend.

Family outing for our Christmas meal

Just had 3 course Xmas meal here. Beautiful food , cooked perfectly , lovely presentation. Staff friendly and helpful Really the best turkey meal ever !!

We returned to have a meal here to see if the service was back to how it used to be . The food and sevice we received was excellent. We now look forward to our next visit .

A great improvement since last visit. Manager very accomodating, staff pleasant too. Better Sunday Lunch menu - lamb on as well. Good choice of sweets - back on our Sunday Lunch Rota.

A fabulous pub, that offers a variety of delicious home cooked food. They have a good choice of drinks. Landlord very chatty & friendly, as are his staff. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

Booked a table for 8 to celebrate my dads birthday. When we walked in there were more staff than customers. That should of been a clue.

Lovely pub. Clean light and airy. Good atmosphere. Very friendly and helpful staff. Starter came. My fathers pate was a great sized portion and he said very tasty but my portion of bruschetta was tiny. Three mouthfuls which was a shame as it was delicious. Rump steak was nice and was cooked as asked for. I had a light bite of baguette with bacon Brie and cranberry with handcut chips. Again this was delicious but only a slither Of Brie on one half of the baguette. Shame. I would recommend and will no doubt try it again as the staff made you feel very welcome.

Well where do I start!! We were greeted by the brilliant Simon and Sam (who were dressed superbly) and promptly given a lovely table and offered drinks. We had the lite bite fish and chips and the roast beef baguette with some lovely homemade onion rings. We were not disappointed in the fish or the baguette. We will back again when we come up from Shrewsbury, till the next time!

We have been here many times before and never had a poor meal or bad service but unfortunately this meal proved horrendous. We checked if we could have the hickory chicken meal gluten free with the sauce . We were assured it was possible. After starting to eat the meal we were then advised it was not the gluten free version. We then checked again could we have the gluten free meal with the sauce and assured this was possible. I ate alone as i was eating my meal already. Not ideal as you go out to eat as a couple. The manager offered us two drinks free as compensation . The meal came 20 minutes later with no sauce . My wife ate the meal as she had waited so long to eat but was disappointed as it was tasteless. We mentioned this to the manager who promtly said , well the sauce has gluten in it . We explained we had asked twice if we could have the meal with the sauce and been assured we could . I suggested they remove this meal from the bill as i would have expected the manager to offer this but it took me to suggest this . We then waited 40 minutes to even be asked if we wanted a dessert.We feel we were blanked as we had politely complained. We gave up waiting as no one came near and i went to the bar and ordered the desserts with the manager . No apology was offered or explanation given why we were not asked if we wanted a dessert , yet people around us were asked . What is concerning is my wife has had the meal with the sauce on other occasions and was supposedly gluten free ! Luckily my wife did not suffer a reaction but in another person it might have been a different story with a very different ending . We suggested to the manager he advises on the menu or to the customer this meal is served plain . I hope , if we go back again we have better service and correct information given regards gluten free meals.

We visited the Black Dog after a long hot day at the Crocky Trail at the end of a hot August. We wanted somewhere within a few minutes drive that wasn't too hectic to prepare us for our drive back dwon South. The manager, Simon, was fun, friendly and welcoming. He made sure our kids were comfortable and cracked a few jokes with them. The food! What can I say! Awesome. We spent £90 on a family of 4 but that included sharing platters - 1 would have been enough! It also included a couple of drinks each. The menu was so varied. The kids opted for a tasty curry whereas I went for a scrummy cajun burger ad hubby had a trio of sausages. Everything was well presented and cooked superbly. This never happens but we left lots of food as the portions were just great. NExt visit up to the north west, we will be back :)

I went here with family for a Sunday roast. when it came it looked very nice, but the meat did taste and looked as if it came out of a pack from the supermarket, even the ham, which is a strange choice for a guest meat! It took a while for it to arrive although there weren't many people there. my niece had the fish and thought it was amazing

After driving over 200 miles we were ready for a meal especially as we had tried, unsuccessfully, to find a restaurant en route from Norwich to Chester. As it was a bank holiday every eatery was heaving with customers. Finally we reach d the Black Dog, just 10 miles from home and found it pleasant quiet. I ordered a gammon' pineapple and mushroom with chips. Excellent. My wife had scampi with usual accompaniments. Will definitely visit again- Without a 200 mile drive beforehand, if possible

We were recommended to try this lovely pub. Food was excellent both in presentation and quality. Service was friendly with a relaxed atmosphere. Good choice of menu! We would definitely return. Visited in 23rd August 2018.

What a place. We ended up here by chance as our vehicle had broken down waiting for a recovery truck. The place was beautiful inside. Very relaxing. Staff were lovely. Very friendly and helpful very interactive. Now the food well what can I say. I could not breath by the time we left we were so full. Great portions. Amazing food. Great presentation. A brilliant selection of food and drinks.

Last two times food was good. This time very poor. Prices gone up and food was bland. Shame really as it’s on my doorstep.

Absolutely aweful food. The gentleman behind the bar was however very courteous. We should have guessed about the food as the place was deserted

Visited this pub for the first time today. They charge restaurant prices but don’t deliver in terms of service or food. Had bland chicken with salty potatoes for £16. We asked for mushy peas on the side and to swap skin on fries for chips with the battered fish - they did neither. We weren’t asked whether we wanted deserts. All in all a poor experience which we won’t repeat.

A friend recommend we try here as she always told us about how nice the roast dinners are. Well, we weren’t disappointed! The Yorkshire puddings were delicious (and huge!) and the meat just melted. My only criticism would be there wasn’t enough veg brought out for the 4 of us. Other than that, it was lovely.

Have visited the Black Dog several times over the past couple of weeks, for meals and as a venue for a group function. Each time the food has been of the highest quality, well presented, good portions, and cooked to perfection.

Last visit about 3 months ago wss awful.

My partner and I have been regular visitors of this pub. In previous visits it has always been busy and there were offers available. Not now as there is a new landlord. To our surprise the pub was virtually empty. We ordered food from the main menu. My partner ordered the cod and chips and I chose lasagne. Unfortunately when my partners meal arrived he noticed the fish portion was significantly smaller. The fish overcooked and the batter was dark brown. This was disappointing as prior to this the fish and chips were of excellent quality and a large portion of fish . Sadly the same cannot be said now . I enjoyed my lasagne. Although it was smothered in a. crust of cheddar cheese which spoilt it. We won't be returning anytime soon.

We did Chester Tri on sunday and then wanted some lunch before heading back to the east mids. Rang to see if we could get a table for 9 at an hours notice and they were really great and got us in no problem! Great food, reasonable prices and lovely team. Highly recommend.
