Was a bit sceptical about coming here after reading the reviews. However it is safe to say they take the negative reviews seriously and have definitely actioned what people were complaining about. Myself and 3 friends had a very good experience, roaring coal fires made it warm and cosy, excellent service from all the staff, and the food arrived in good time, was hot and cooked to perfection. We will definitely return

Been visiting the White Lion for a long time and at one stage was our favourite pub, it was our go to mid week or weekend cosy pub with good home cooked food. Now understandably, things happen and things can’t be perfect all the time however I can say that since around 2019 we have had consistently bad experiences with general service, barely any food available on the menu, wait times for food and food quality. We’ve possibly been once a year now since 2019 and question why we’ve bothered to try it again every time. Tried again this weekend for a Sunday dinner, waste of time, waste of money and felt like nothing but an inconvenience to the staff, unfortunately we felt it was now time for a review. Very sad as it’s a beautiful pub to visit in both winter and summer

Came on a relatively quiet Sunday lunch time. It wasn't that busy. Food took at least 40min to arrive. There was another customer going around asking how long people have been waiting so clearly an issue. When the food did arrive it was pretty cold which was a shame as Sunday lunch (for someones birthday) should be a bit special. Asked if we would like another drink, 25min later still not arrived. Went to cancel them in the end as we had finished eating, not great interaction with the staff as we done so. On payment again a question around why we cancelled the drinks. We asked if short staffed they just said no just very busy. If that was busy I'd hate to see them when more than 50% the tables occupied. Guy taking payment wasn't very polite, slamming the till and looking generally peed off. Shame as been here for drinks plenty of times. Won't eat here again and probably avoid for a bit due to poor customer service/experience.

A group of 20+ meet here today as our usual venue was un available. Went to order food and a drink and was informed that they don’t do pints of soft drinks and a half pint of lemonade cost £3.25 which is £1 more than I pay at any other pub for a pint! I asked for a straw and was told they don’t do straws to ‘save the turtles’ have they not heard of paper ones like the rest of the world? I had leek and potato soup which was nice but there was far too much pepper in it (also commented on by 2 others on my table who also had the soup), it wasn’t very warm when it arrived but the bread was, however the butter was fresh from the fridge and unspreadable. They had 2 party’s of 20 in along with the normal walk in people and they had one person on the bar so you had to queue and wait for 10 mins or more to be served. I went to the ladies and was stood waiting for the hot water to come through when a regular told me I’d be lucky to get any!!!! No hot water to wash your hands with is unacceptable esp if like I do have problems with your hands and can’t wash in cold water if I want my hands to work afterwards. I’ve given a 2 simply because the staff were friendly and it had a good atmosphere I won’t be going back

Came in today first time. Only for a couple of drinks after a lovely walk. First impression lovely homely cozy pub good selection of draught beverages. The young lad dark hair on duty was a credit to you very professional approachable and welcoming. Unfortunately however I was stood in the queue my turn to be served and another gentleman big fella checkered shirt noticed I was in the line but proceeded to serve two other customers ahead of myself despite clearly seeing I was next to be served. I found his attitude quite abrupt passive and obnoxious which is a shame as you have a lovely pub.

Always a great meal here, Christmas Eve this year very busy after church service, but staff as always made sure we were served promptly with drinks, food ordered and out in good time and very tasty. Staff always very friendly, and welcoming and take time to have a chat making the experience more personal and inviting. 7 of us dined and all gave 5* for food, quality, environment & service. Well worth a visit. Recent visit Absolutely impecible food and service from Rob and his team on Monday for a double celebration of a 40th birthday and an adoption day celebration, 40 of us were there for dinner…. And every single meal, and delivery of food was perfect! Not a single complaint. 54 items ordered from the menu, and they didn’t even break a sweat! Handled the service so well. Highly recommended! Thank you for looking after us all so well. See you soon.

Disappointing! I ordered Greek chicken skewers for a starter. I was told they had run out of Tzaziki, so would substitute with Garlic mayonnaise, which I was ok with, but I was shocked when presented with a couple of cocktail sticks with a small chunk of chicken on them and the salad that accompanied it was brown! Overpriced and underwhelmed!

Dined at the white lion this evening, food was ok, service was friendly, particularly from the two ladies. I was somewhat alarmed to see the man that was working sharing the tips from the glass on the bar, but not completely giving them to the staff. I observed him share part of the them(including his share that was put in his pocket) , then toss the coins that were left into the till, which looked like a couple of quid. Don’t think I’ll return to this venue if this is where the manager thinks a share of the tips should go! Think twice about tipping here!!

Meal booked for a birthday, staff not interested in taking our orders, food took an hour to come out and was so hungry just ate it not impressed 8 chips half a carrot and a dessert spoon of green cabbage and a slice of cheese pie which should have been on the menu as potato pie, no taste of cheese, person came to ask if all was well completely ignored our end of the table and on eventually clearing plates I said the meal wasn’t good but ate it as I was hungry this was met with heckles raised and swiping of plates from customers next to me, we were a party of twelve and I wasn’t the only disappointed but I chose to speak up, best was yet to come when desserts came I had the waffle which was very nice one of our party ordered the apricot dessert ate half and then found to her horror a grub/maggot (we all have photos)in her dessert, on reporting this we were told the desserts are bought in and this wasn’t anything to do with them , shocking was there an apology don’t think so after spending over £250 there not happy with them staff very poor lady that was waiting on clearly didn’t want to be there rude and the manager was also rude , wasn’t even busy so no excuses for bad service not worth the drive out .

Visited tonight - ordered chilli with rice and steak & chips. Not one kidney bean in the chilli contra to what menu stated- were told by waitress the kitchen had run out of them, and we asked why no one said anything when we ordered - she said she would report to General Manager . He then came out of the kitchen & said they batch cook the chilli & would’ve just got a portion out- the batch had kidney beans in - when asked why the chef hadn’t checked the fact that there were no beans he didn’t reply. We asked for money off - he openly shook his head at us, and we queried why he was doing this, but he just didn’t answer us, which was extremely rude. He took the price of the chilli off our bill with him completely silent. Obviously they must have kidney beans there - or have they??? Won’t be going again.

Service and atmosphere were excellent and all the food was really good except mine. I had the Moroccan style couscous with roast vegetables but it was no more Moroccan than I was and not a sign of roasted vegetables. Infact it tasted like a packet couscous Which for £11 was not worth the price. I have couscous on a regular basis especially from Aldi which is amazing. We've been to the White Lion many times over the last 30 years and had some amazing meals here, sadly this was not one of them. First off there was no staff about when we walked in so we stood for a while thenwandered to look for a table when suddenly someone appeared and told us to sit anywhere rather abruptly. There only being 4 other people in at the time, it wasn't hard to find somewhere. This lack of customers should have warned us. Our order was taken but took an inordinately long time to come out, with the pub being so empty this was surprising. Four of us had the roast, the lamb was good but the vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage , no carrots at all which is very odd, were disappointing as 3 of us don't like any of them, so we were stuck with lamb, very hard roast potatoes, oddly glutinous gravy, a Yorkshire pud and some invisible mash, so not at all the glorious roast dinner it should have been . We also had the the scampi, it was deemed 'only OK' so not great. The Macaroni and Cheese was so dry my Mum could only manage half of it and I don't think she enjoyed any of it. The garlic bread that came with it was nice though. The puddings, Cherry pie - flat, very little filling, also the same said of the apple pie. Two of us had waffles but don't like chocolate sauce so asked for toffee but got told no so just had a weirdly damp, flat waffle with some ice cream plonked on the top. The Wet Nelly didn't have a lot of 'Nelly' (raisins ) in it and was drowning in custard to the point it covered the top of it ,along it waterlogged and not just wet! We came away very disappointed in the whole experience and won't be back.

Flies everywhere!!!! Myself including other customers complained about the flies and was told that it was because the farmer/farmers has sprayed there field. Had to cover drinks and side order of food with napkins. Explained to one of the servers that covering food with napkins isn’t acceptable because of the flies, she became agitated and asked what would I like her today??? What a reply. I responded saying as a customer I should be able to eat my food without covering it because of the fly problem. Her response to that was that she would take one of the side orders off, then went on to tell customers in the bar area and a workmen on site what I had just said at the table. How unprofessional. In my opinion the restaurant/ food should not of been served that day, and food not served till the fly problem was dealt with.

Oh dear, the last time we were here it was lovely, I had the Penne Pasta, delicious. However, last night 2 Cheese, Onion and Potato pies were ordered, it should have said Potato, Onion and Cheese. There was so little cheese in it you couldn't taste it, with huge slices of Potato. The other dishes were OK. I know the price of food has risen steeply, but it would be so much better to raise the price slightly and do a good job. This pub is part of a chain of 5 or 6 and all their menus are virtually the same which is a shame because it becomes very boring, unfortunately this pub is the worst. The Hanging Gate at Weaverham is definitely the best. However, the chips and veg were nice and the food hot and staff very friendly but it'll be a long time before we return.

Tbh I don’t like to give a bad review but.. I have to say I won’t be returning here. The white lion years ago was one of its kind, very popular with the Cheshire set. My partner and I went here today for a set 2 course traditional Xmas lunch. It was disappointing. Nothing bad to say about the staff, they were really good, friendly and helpful. Sadly the pub is now producing run of the mill chain pub food. Nothing home cooked and the xmas dinner we had was eatable but something you could get in a Wetherspoons. Years ago on their blackboard was a choice of fabulous home cooked food, not any more. The setting is perfect, the staff are lovely but sadly this place has gone downhill. The place was nearly empty, years ago it was full to busting. I asked the waitress why so empty? She answered people feeling the money pinch. Sorry guys, this isn’t the case. People have stopped going because of the standard run of the mill pub chain food. They need to get their act together and make it like it used to be. Even if the prices rise…. You get what you pay for.

I asked for cherry pie to warm me up but that arrived cold on a freezing plate. The haddock was lovely. The service again, was ok, but I was sat for thirty minutes before I was asked for my order. A drink on arrival on a freezing cold day would have been lovely. The atmosphere was bleak and cold. We had to ask if anything could be done to warm us up, by putting more logs on the fire. This was done but we were still isolated in the coldest part of the building.

Pity there isnt a zero star option as this place was awful. For a start the service was terribly slow. But when the the food finally appeared it was apallingly bad. Not one person at our table actually managed to finish their meal. In some of the dishes the pie was stone cold and had to be sent back and others had cold vegetables which were also returned. The batter on the fish was like a rock overcoat and when one person finally managed to break through there was hardly any fish inside. Also the chips were lukewarm at best. Not sure who was in the kitchen and had the audacity to send out such rubbishy food but certainly couldnt have been a chef with much in the way of cooking skills.

Once meals had been ordered, food arrived in a reasonable time but no cutlery. No one came to clear away our plates and asked us how our meal was at any point during our visit. The vegetables and roast potatoes were too hard to cut and eat. Waited at the bar to say how our meal was and waited another 15 minutes and there was only a young girl to offer the feedback to. We won't be going again.

14 September:- Called in for lunch mid afternoon as we have done a number of times. Our chosen starter sharing seafood platter was fine, our main course of fish pie was only average with quite gluten mash potato, my main of chicken ham and leek crumble was not overly tasty and not very crumbly atall We had the distinct feeling that our meal at this visit was really an example of what is happening at many locations, the is a reduction in quality and portions in order to make up for more than any increase in basic costs, and that is lost revenue. The service we experienced was poor in comparison to previous visits, with a young girl waitress in need of proper customer service training. Although our sharing platter was fine, her attitude when she brought it to the table was in an abrupt and cold manner, ' who's is this' only. She also thought nothing of abruptly interupting a private conversation with haste when delivering our mains. I did not say anything at the time because there was no need or wish for us to expect any replacement food, and we do not want to create a possible bad atmosphere, possibly leading to further marring the visit. We will, of course be back at some point to check if today was an unfortunate hiccup, but remembering today hoping the White Lion has not joined other establishments in making customers think twice. As part of this review I will not make any positive recommendations.

Nice place with large terraces and grassed area very close to Helsby/Frodsham. I must say the lower star rating was for time waiting to be served for food and drinks at the bar due to it being a busy evening and one person behind the bar. Service from staff was excellent once served. We ordered gammon/eggs and a steak. Gammon was very nice, steak average, frozen chips. Good selection of lagers and cask/keg ales. Would return as it has a nice interior and spacious gardens to dine in or enjoy a sunny afternoon/evening. Menu has many options for all diets.

Wow! What a jewel of a pub to find! We had spent the morning in Delamere Forest and then googled the nearby pubs for a late lunch. This was about 15 mins away and looked the most appealing. We weren’t wrong! It’s an absolutely beautiful pub restaurant in a gorgeous location. We were made so welcome as soon as we walked in the door. You can choose to eat in the bar area or go in to the restaurant part for table service, which we did. There are lots of tables so sit at, all beautiful. The menu is extensive and everything is freshly cooked to order. We were so impressed with our choices. The portions were big, so we weren’t able to squeeze in one of the lovely sounding desserts today but did have a very good coffee after. Melena was looking after us and she was very attentive, friendly and absolutely fantastic. So much so that I asked her name. What an absolutely fantastic experience! We will definitely be coming back when we visit the forest again.

We have always loved the food at the White Lion, we have visited numerous times over the past 5-6 years. Unfortunately we went on Thursday last week and found the Specials Board has gone (which we loved) and the menu has changed in line with the Netherton, however the Cajun Chicken Burger with Chorizo (which is fantastic at the Nertherton) was disappointing, for some reason they have decided to cover it in a thick greasy batter, it was bland and only had 1 slice of Chorizo - why isn't it done the same way as the Netherton? Chicken breast in tasty Cajun seasoninh with 2 slices of Chorizo? My mum ordered the Chicken, Chorizo and leek crumble/pie it was like a bland soup that just tasted of celery.. Honestly tasted like a childrens home economics attempt. We left really disappointed as the food used to be superb, not sure if it's the management or a new chef or both but I think they'll be losing custom quick unless the quality of food and menu options are improved/revert to previous great standards.

Portions quite small now. Not as good as it used to be. Prices average. ..... One year on and the decline continues 😏 Decor ok, staff lovely. Ordered chicken, leek and chorizo crumble with "seasonal vegetables" .... A picture paints a thousand words....

First visit to the White Lion with friends who had been before and recommended it. I was not impressed. The house curry tasted like a spiced up version of tinned, chopped tomatoes , same consistancy too, the tofu was not battered but appeared to have been diced and just added to the sauce and no poppadom. My husbands salmon was submerged under a cover of cabbage, no asparagus spears as listed on the menu. All in all, no reason for a return visit. Friends had the gammon with no complaints.

We were visiting from the US and couldn't find any kitchens open locally on a Monday night. The White Lion beckoned, and we were so glad that it did! Fabulous food, drink, staff & atmosphere. Couldn't recommend more highly!

Been here a few times for Sunday lunch and food has been great. Knocked a star off because chef needs to learn how to make crispy roast potatoes. They are always a little soggy and bland.
