The Black Bull Pub and Eating House in Chelmsford

Recently had the Cavery Roast on a Friday. Absolutely delicious meal. Both the Pork Beef were fabulous, as were the roasties! All washed down with a glass of Merlot. Excellent prices and service. Alas not many people there.

What a fabulous carvery lunch.Excellent choice,and no restrictions on meat choice. Perfectly cooked fresh vegetabke,Yorkshire puddings etc,all the trimmings. Great value for money...comfortable,unpretentious surroundings,and friendly efficient staff...WELL DONE...We will be back.

Superb! The food was simply delicious and the drink’s we’re prepared quickly and wonderfully. The staff are sociable and quite welcoming. Definitely plan on coming back

The food came fast and it was delicious, the waiters and bar staff are amazing and sociable people, i would recommend to everyone.

This visit was sadly disappointing. The woman who sat us & took our drinks order was miserable & sullen, we were not offered any further drinks after the first so I had to get her attention to ask for another (I wouldn't have bothered but was thirsty,) both of my drinks I requested with no ice but both came with lots of it. My food was lovely & hot, the chicken gravy tho had nice flavour, was VERY lumpy & so not pleasant. Another of our group had the Mega roast, the only hot things were the potatoes & gravy. The meats were luke warm (I would not have eaten it but he did not want to complain,) & the broccolli for all of us who had it was pretty much raw - (not good for dodgy old teeth!). A previous experience with a nasty thawed, refrozen dessert meant that after this disappointing main meal, no-one wanted to try anything else. The mega roast complaint was mention upon payent of the bill but was barely acknowledged let alone acted upon. All very sad really as had some really good meals here some years ago, I don't think we will be going back again.

Steak & chips came with perfectly cooked tomatoes, lovey mushrooms in sauce , just the right amount of chips . Steak was cooked just right . A warm plate as well , which is rare these days . Gets a Jimbo five thumbs up 👍👍👍👍👍

We have been coming here for years and always had good food and a very friendly welcome, but I have to say that they have recently got a new chef and his food is beautiful, every thing is freshly cooked, which might take a little longer but well worth the wait, tender rack of lamb, the best Lobster Thermidor I’ve ever tasted , everything absolutely delicious, waitresses lovely and friendly, excellent.

Best Sunday roast in the area, good value and main menu excellent. All fresh food and excellent friendly service.

Two of us went early on Thursday evening -- one of us had lamb cutlets and the my wife had salmon. Both could not have been better. We don't go out too often but when we do we are particular and look for something special, the food was most definitely that with excellent service. The service was not that quick, they do point out that everything is cooked from scratch, it certainly tasted that good - so the wait was most definitely worth it. The restaurant décor was not great, it was however very clean and it was comfortable - please don't let this comment put you off from going. I had a great chocolate desert and there were three that I would have love to have tried. We will definitely be going back soon. C&K

Sunday lunch for 8 adults , over an hour wait, food was lukewarm. It was one of the party’s birthdays, asked if we could cut a birthday cake. Was told the manager said this would cost £2 pee person total £16, probably twice the price of the cake. Asked to speak to the manager, given the food delay and we had no time for dessert at this stage. HE REFUSED TO COME AND TALK TO ME. I felt embarrassed for the waitresses , they were lovely. Thank ask myself, dues he want customers??? Will NOT be going back!!!!!

We went to have an early supper on a Sunday to find the pub empty Was very disappointed with the food The beef was good however cold as were the veg the gravy was lumpy and watery The desert menu was again disappointing only three choices and no at all seasonal all summer type dessert The staff were ok Such a shame as this pub is local for us

The food was not worth the money at all. Garlic bread was stale, turkey was dry. Would not recommend this place to eat. We were also the only ones in there on a Sunday afternoon..

I have a visible disability and, as soon as I walked in, I had staff behind the bar sniggering. Not welcoming at all. Struck me as the sort of place which, for some reason, has been left behind in terms of an evolution in society's attitudes to people who are different from the mainstream. Not really family-oriented either. Like I said in the title, stay clear unless you're a white van driver.

Lovely food, perfect eggs with the ham & chips and tasty apple crumble. Staff friendly and welcoming. Thoroughly recommend!
