The Bear Hotel in Havant

I stayed here on 9-10 Nov 2024 with my partner, going to an event nearby. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and that's where the compliments end. Because unfortunately the lovely bed was in a room that was in this hotel, which was regrettably dreadful. My expectations for the hotel were not great. But the location was ideal for our reason to stay. The hotel smells damp from the minute you embark on the trek to your room up the many stairs that flail off in different directions. Our first room smelt old and mouldy - the wardrobe was unusable because of this. My partner decided to use the bath (after a quick clean) which was all going well until she tried to stop it. The cold tap wouldn't turn off, sending us into a mild panic. I shot off an the expedition back to the reception, where I quickly interrupted the two chatting staff (still in a mild panic) to explain that we can not turn the cold water tap off in the bathroom. The response was a very serious, 'Would you like us to come and take a look?' 'Either that, or your hotel might flood, I guess!' By now, I could have quite easily cancelled my evening plans and just driven home, but they soon realised the issues and moved us to another room. The new room (49) was much more modern - 1990's I'd say compared to 1970s in the previous room. The bathroom was less mouldy and the taps worked which was a start. The wardrobe also smelt fresher. Despite being told when we checked in that our room was not near the downstairs wedding party, we were actually on the top floor directly right above it. So, when came back to the room at 11 ready for bed, the room was shaking and filled with the beat of what seemed like a rave downstairs. My partner was none to pleased to say the least and shot off back on the journey down to the reception. (If you want to get your daily steps in, this may be the hotel for you if you can cope with all the other stuff BTW). When she argued that we were told that we would be nowhere near the party, the answer was along the lines of... 'Oh no, all the rooms are either near the bar or the venue. She wouldn't have said that'. The only plus was that the party was finishing at 11.30. So, at around 11.20 the rave stopped and we had to endure a room full of party goers hammering out Angels by Robbie Williams, followed by You'll Never Walk Alone before the music stopped and the throng of people went for a loud chat outside, right beneath out window in the car park. Thank heavens for ear plugs. Needless to say, We'll Never Stay Again.

Arrived. Met a lovely lady on the reception. She was great. Then I explained I had a pet ( it is a cat ) always worked away. Then this women who turned up( refused to give her name ) was rude to the most. She spoke to me as if i was someone who stepped on her shopping. Talking down to me as if she owned the world. Saying I can't do this I can't do that. Yes I can record you and no you don't have the right to tell me I can or can not use my phone. 4 years working away with my cat and I have never had so much abuse about it. The stars are there for a reason. And with someone like her in charge I don't think they will ever go up. Be respectful of others. It's not welcoming it's kinda rough with no signs for reception or parking details. You have to pay to park even though it says free. The pace it is situated is very hard to get to. And if you like to walk around to get anywhere this is the hotel for you

The staff at the bear hotel were excellent, friendly, helpful, the food was good , the bar was pleasant. The rooms , beds were clean and comfortable but the bathroom was in need of an upgrade, it was clean the shower was nice but the tiles were not great and carpets look worn, but overall a pleasant stay

From the moment of arrival all staff were very helpful and friendly. The rooms were a little tired but clean and very comfortable beds. The food was good and excellent value for money. Would certainly stay there again

First couple nights I was saying how polite people were I felt almost at home I was away from my usual work setting trying to chill the room was very expensive 325 and for one day i extended my room i payed 85 pound and that wasnt breakfast included had to pay further 12.50 the orange juice was nice I payed for my first few days in a basic double room I was sure breakfast was included it wasn't I had to pay 12.50 on top id opted first few days no breakfast as i was on budget I was extremely disappointed n didn't eat breakfast again on the day i did have it as it was undercooked for my liking n I went to the local whetherspoons down the road it was beautiful there breakfast. The rooms in the hotel what can I say tidy yes clean no I always take a cloth with me and when I wiped the daydil in my room and skirting they were black corridors all need deep cleaning I also was bitten by something while in bed the towel I'd left dropped on bath n floor was mucky kept getting placed back on the hand rail unchanged for the 4 days the heating was never on so even if i wanted to dry my beach towel id bought with me i was unable and the staff very rude communication between the staff lacked in tremendously i had wrote a great review first day but quickly decided i had to change it I've had to remove my great recommendations as day after I wrote it staff seemed to dislike me think it was because I was popular with guest tbh maybe they were jealous people I'd met had only gone for a night extended there stay not because of the hotel but because they liked my company but the manager s miss or Mrs j was the rudest she started being rude with others n I pressuming its because they were my friend might I point out I wasn't a nuisance or a pest was out all day most days but while I was there at the hotel I felt intimidated and threatened by the staff not the customers so thank you for helping me with my mental illnesses it is contagious how you speak to people n you made me feel snappy I get one holiday a year so thanks for making it so memorable maybe concentrate on cleaning and communications between your staff as things said apparently should not have been by staff but somehow that was the customers fault you can't do your job properly my advice would be avoid this hotel i came home so I didn't get myself arrest i was so annoyed in the end couldn't wait to leave.

Well, shame their is a thief in the place and no one will take responsibility!

Booked in the Bear for one night 🤔 on arrival was given our key...well the room was right at the top of the building...not impressed, we entered the room and my goodness I wanted to cry terrible smell of damp, dirty carpet, and the furniture my goodness was disgusting, we reported this to reception and was told no other rooms available, she really wasn't bothered, we left to go out to get something to eat and get booked in somewhere else....we were lucky to find another place to stay...a clean place I have to stress,we went back to the bear and gave our key back the kind person understood our problem and said we were not the first to complain but unfortunately management don't appear to be listening....we understand it's an old building but come on that room was not fit for anyone to stay in. So management listen to your staff....we would never return to this place.

We arrived late at the hotel but the night porter was really helpful. Their rooms were acceptable, but nothing fancy. The service from the desk staff in the morning was less than helpful. They insisted that there was no space for breakfast, despite there being plenty of space. When we asked if there was anywhere nearby by and they directed us to a McDonald's. Fortunately, we ignored this and found a lovely local cafe just round the corner. I was stocked that a local business wouldn't promote another local business

Went for lunch. Arrived at 12. And ordered straight way. We were told because they had a party of 12 in the restaurant, we wouldn't get our food till 12.30. Which we accepted. In fact, we didn't get anything till 1.20. Only order 2 sandwiches and a kids meal. Absolutely ridiculous!!

The hotel is a classic example of a hotel that was built a long time ago. Even has wireless radio on the rooms. The height of fashion back then. Excellent service - meals excellent value for money huge portions. We had the beef and ale pie. Struggled to finish it there was so much.

Terrible, not a family friendly hotel, keep kids away! staff where horrible to my son he is 6 only asked for water in the morning b4 breakfast nearly had a full on row! hotel owner is a man, he came in shouting at me. Drunks in there all the time at the front pub, avoid at all cost. Disgusting

The worst hotel I have stayed in. Had a single room room 5 hair on the bed , bitten on my leg unsure what from, flush kept tricking for ages after, the fan in bathroom stayed on for ages and loud noisy fan, rooms not soundproof lots of noise from neighbouring rooms and corridors until 3am on the morning, too many loud car noises, bath tube too dirty to shower in, stains all over the carpet, the reception check in was ok but on checkout no one came out to checkout despite people being in office waited 5 mins before leaving key in box, poor poor poor except for centralised location and parking

Stopped here for a couple of nights when attending a family wedding.The pub is spotlessly clean and the staff were wonderfully helpful and welcoming.Would be happy to stay again.Only negative is no directions on how to find the carpark, it would have been a chore,if I had not checked on Google maps before setting off.

Visting on the off chance coming from West Wittering Beach with 2 young kids and extending our holiday. After navigating the one way found there was ample free parking behind. The room is spacious and comfortable with excellent water pressure and clean sheets/ towels. Chose to have dinner here, as the menu looked great and the perfectly cooked food did not disappoint, so much that our 3 and 1/2 year old said it was the best pizza he'd ever had and the lovely waitress Hannah took him to thank the Chef Sam personally. What really made the visit other than the excellent food and accommodation, was the service and Ryan and Hannah provided going above and beyond to bring out crayons and manage food times, to chatting to calm our son, and generally doing anything to make our experience amazing.

It was my first time out of the country visiting my boyfriend and meeting his family. I chose this hotel immediately after seeing the photos and historical information. Of course, the rooms are a bit old but it is an old building, so do not expect it to be fully up to date. There is a short walk to Costa, Tesco, the train station and Gregg's. It is beautiful at sunset, lots of pretty flowers and birds in the area, very quiet streets but the pub can be rough on the weekends - as to be expected, lol. It truly is amazing inside of the hotel but what really made it super beautiful and amazing was the staff. Ryan was so amazing and I miss him to bits! He was so funny and I was very emotional the night before I left for the USA. He told me to wait while he got me something and it was a signed drawing of the hotel he did. Instantly more tears! I love this hotel so much, I have new memories I can cherish. I am also getting the drawing framed. The customer service was warm and kind. Thank you for everything! P.S. Get their sticky toffee pudding with a beer!!!!!!

Staff and food brilliant. Perhaps the owners could consider spending more on the building and facilities.

Room was ok for the price. Bathroom very big and very clean. I could only open the window a little bit though then it stopped at a certain point. Only thing is was annoying people chatting smoking at 1am below my room at 1am 2am. No respect for people trying to sleep. Someone kept closing door loud too early morning. On the plus side I love havant even though I only live in fratton. Lovley old creaky hotel love the history behind it. I would come back, just maybe a different room because of the noise below my window.

Visited the bear on a Easter Sunday, sat in the bar with friends and we enjoyed our meals and drinks here the woman behind the bar was amazing to deal with the awkwardness of my friends defo recommend and defo go back

Booked a table for 1.30PM for 7 adults this place was not busy, we waited 35 minutes before the first meal arrived, when the other meals arrived chips were nearly cold, another was taken back to the microwave to be heated up. We all agreed that we would not be eating there again. Also the gents toilet was out of order.

This is a very relaxing and quaint place. The staff were lovely, room comfortable, and the atmosphere was pleasant. It was great to be somewhere that had a sense of the past.

My husband and I have stayed at the Bear on several occasions.We have always found staff friendly and helpful.Lovely comfy bed and lashings of hot water to have a nice soak in the bath.We were so pleased when we went down to breakfast to find you know have your teapots of tea also toast bought to your table and toaster was always a bit hit and miss.Well done all staff at the Bear.

Just spent 2 nights at the Bear and thoroughly enjoyed the stay. Great location and lovely historic hotel with great atmosphere. Large clean and very comfortable room, friendly staff and a fantastic breakfast. Train station 5 minutes walk for trip into Portsmouth. Lovely public bar at front of hotel. Free parking at rear of hotel. Will certainly return.

We chose The Bear Hotel for a 2 night stay as we were travelling to visit the Weald and Downland Living Museum as part of a 70th birthday celebration. We were a party of 8 and all very happy with our rooms and hotel service. The beds are so big and comfortable and staff were very friendly and helpful. We had rooms without breakfast but decided to book for the second morning. There was plenty of choice for those in our party who just had the continental option and the pastries were delicious and fresh. The cooked breakfast was amazing! 5 of us had cooked options and all were delicious. Very fresh and great quality ingredients. We all said it was one of the best breakfasts we'd ever had in a hotel, if not the best. Greatest compliments to the chef. We wished we booked the breakfast both days! We've noticed that people have left negative comments about their experiences at the hotel. It's an old building and could do with a little TLC but we found it clean, comfortable and friendly. Staff were more than happy to help with any questions and accommodate our family party needs as much as they could. It's a great base for many surrounding attractions and reasonably priced. Thank you for helping to make our mum's special birthday weekend a great one...

I stayed here with my family for one night, we had two rooms. The lady on reception got the bookings mixed up as soon as we arrived, not a great start. The Bear is really dated and not the cleanest of places I’ve stayed in, there are worse places, however dirty carpets, and holes in the sofas in the bar/public area is pretty terrible! We couldn’t even get a coffee in the restaurant in the morning which is diabolical with a place of its size! The staff seem very uninterested and unhappy in their jobs. This place could be really lovely with some TLC and the correct staff members running it. Our bedrooms, they were ok for a night. The bed was a lovely size, clean and comfortable. Towels in bathroom, lovely and clean. The only negative regarding the room was, the locks on the bedroom doors are a real struggle to lock. There was a lot of people banging, doors slamming in the night when we wanted to sleep, this was going on throughout the early hours, on and off! Would we stay again? I wouldn’t hurry back here, however, the positive to this place is, it is central to where we wanted to visit.

I was very pleased with the food and service at The Bear. Great portion sizes. The staff were happy to see us and chatted to make us comfortable. Nice people. Two Mother's days there now and were happy both tmes. One thing I would advise is to make sure you know how to get to the car par at the back. There is a one way system.

All rooms have a feature room 20 the floor goes up hill room 35 radiator. Don’t turn off room 45. You have to run the bath with the shower room 21 you hit your head on the ceiling etc. it Needs money put into the hotel its all old and broken plus dirt carpets :( got told you can’t order eggs all at once because the chef only has one frying pan and they said if you don’t want something on your breakfast you would have to take it off yourself when ordering because it confuses the chef. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, needs a lot off money pumped in to it to bring it up to date the only good thing here is the staff

We booked in overnight for a very reasonable price on a room only tariff, we were in room 19 which is a lovley quirky onsuite, quiet room away from traffic noise. There were lots of stair cases to access the room as it is in the top of the building but it's worth the effort. The room itself has everything you need, 2 large mirrors and a large mirror on the dressing table a spacious wardrobe with hangers, ironing board and iron. The hotel also installed a fan as it was a very warm day. The bathroom was large and had everything you needed, toilet, sink and shower over bath, the water was hot and pressure on the shower was good. Beware, the bathroom floor is on a very steep incline and if not careful it is very slippery when exiting the shower/ bath, the addition of hand rail would be advised for stability, you can get a non slip bath mat from reception but this does not help on the floor. The bed was very comfortable with clean crisp bedding although the duvet was not used as it was a warm night. We can't comment on the food as we ate out for both dinner and breakfast. The bar is a well decorated and relaxing environment, we had a couple of drinks on arrival, the bar staff were friendly, chatty and eager to help which is nice to see. The beer garden was cool and clean and this backs onto the car park which has plenty of spaces, reception will take care of the parking fee when you book in but the charges ate not too expensive. We enjoyed our stay and will book again when we ate next in the area.

Stayed for one night, staff very friendly and helpful, evening meal really good and great selection of drinks. My bathroom was awful paint peeling, shower head not attached to the wall. Bed clean and confortable. Needs to refurbed as soon as possible. Did try and report problems but no staff on the front desk.

Brilliant hotel, would recommend to all. Fixtures and fittings need updating but everything was beautifully clean. Huge room, comfy bed, friendly staff and delicious food. Would definitely visit again

Me and my partner came to stay a few weeks ago at the Bear it was close to his family which was perfect. We stayed before and as before the service, staff and food were unreaaaal. Although the room was spotlessly clean. It really needs some tlc. I wish Greeneking would give this place a refurb which reflects the amazing staff they have there!

Two friends and I booked for breakfast with Santa for our children and I’m so pleased we did! A lovely warm welcome from Jane and a fab Elf made the children feel special from the start. The grotto was a lovely surprise and Santa was great with the children, really helping the magic knowing their names. Our breakfast was great, our Elf was wonderfully engaging with the children and followed by arts and crafts, we entertained the children for a lovely morning out. Thank you for a great experience to the whole team.

Got together with 6 friends for pre booked Xmas Meal this week. Easy booking good menu choice and service. Lovely food with plenty of 'real turkey. Vegetables properly cooked and Yorkshire and roasties couldn't be bettered. Thoroughly enjoyed in spacious surroundings. Great staff and decorations. Full marks Bear Hotel

Stay with a friend is this historic Havant hostelry. Everything OK, nothing remarkable though. Hoping it would be a bit more atmospheric and maybe some info dotted about its history but staff ok. Slept well, unfortunately had to leave a day early for work purposes.

Stayed for 3 nights and the food was excellent and the staff very friendly and accommodating. Will definitely come back

I had a really lovely meal here for dinner one evening, staff were so friendly and it was nice and quiet. Hope to return soon.

We went for a family meal with friends staying there, it was my first time eating at this place. The menu was fantastic, plenty of choice. The food came out in good time and was really nice. The waitress Hannah was fantastic, we had a good laugh with her. We will definitely be coming back, this is now our new favourite place.

We’ve eaten here before and stopped in for a family dinner and the food was delicious as it normally is. The build your own pasta was a big hit with the kids. The staff were friendly and Hannah looked after us really well. Looking forward to the next time.

The old Hotel was clean and fresh with a warm and family friendly atmosphere. Room was more than sufficient for my needs. Pub on site. Unfortunately only IPA Ale (it is an IPA pub) however more than enough other drinks. Would definately use again when down south.

My husband and I stayed here as part of our minimoon. The staff were so friendly and helpful, we particularly loved the receptionist who shared my affinity for Harry Potter. Our room was a decent size with a lovely big comfy bed. Both breakfast and dinner were very good. Would definitely stay again and would recommend for anyone looking somewhere with character and charm.

Four of us booked here for a 5 night break after reading of it online, overall we were disappointed with the standards set, on our first night after a 10 hour drive we were looking forward to a couple of pints of Greene Kings famed IPA, alas it was not to be, the pint poured was cloudy and it went off thereafter there was not another keg at the ready, not a great start. Although the food was very good, the rooms were very much in need of a good clean and a bit of a facelift and on our penultimate night when the heavens opened our room number 29 was leaking, all we heard was drip drip from 11pm till 7am when we got up. the carpet and ceiling were stained by historic past leaks so it must have been known to management, we wonder at the wisdom of letting such a room and will be taking this up with the company. A certain amount of staff training also would not go astray, although we didn't expect our rooms to be made up daily in the present covid circumstances, we did expect to have an ample supply of milk and sugar to put in our tea and coffee in the room, again no - we had to ask several times before we got any - we didn't expect the Ritz for the amount paid but we did expect a bit more than we got

A Last minute “Let’s go out for dinner” idea. It was a Sunday so we all had the Roast. 3 Vegetarians in my family and usually they can struggle to find something nice. Happily there is a great deal on the menu that caters for Vegans and vegetarians. The Beef roast was really good, the vegetables were freshly cooked, and the vegetarians were really happy with their dishes. Always a good idea to come here, we’re never disappointed.

Wonderful Sunday lunch. Great choice for vegans and vegetarians. Fabulous friendly staff. Nothing is too much trouble. Value for money

The reviews are so mixed for this place, from hidden gem to never again, so I was curious to see the reality. And the reality is that it's just a typical English small town pub-based tired hotel. a rabbit warren of rooms with loads of fire doors, often with sticky door handles, bald patches in the carpet, slightly musty smell, seedy rather than romantic. But some good points - the bed was comfortable and clean, there's free wifi, there's a big and cheap public car park right at the back of the hotel, and the staff were friendly and helpful. So did I like it overall? I thought I'd let breakfast decide, and I'm afraid to say it was poor. I thought it would be home cooked and delicious, but it was quite 'corporate', reminded me of a Premier Inn breakfast - orange juice made from syrup, cheap sausages, tinned mushrooms, they were saving some money and I could tell. So overall, a bit depressing, might as well spend £10 more and stay at the Premier Inn.

My family has some great memories of staying a night at the Bear Hotel prior to travelling on to the Isle of Wight or the South West.The Hotel rooms are a little tired but very comfortable and the staff very helpful and friendly.Food is excellent, good pub grub.The Bear Hotel most definitely isn’t a 5 star hotel...... but we look forward to the day we can stay here again as a stop off on our way to further realms.Oh.... and my dad thinks it’s haunted.

Visited the Bear yesterday afternoon and was met with a very warm welcome from the manager Ben.He was informative and knowledgeable and recommended the fish and chips which was a delight.The other team members we encountered were equally friendly Jane on reception was lovely.Next time we are in the area we will certainly return to this hidden gem.

Went with friends for a beer and a bite to eat. Lovely cask ale and a great crispy battered chicken burger for me. Friends have different pies which they all said were great.

My wife and I had dinner last night and the meal and staff were absolutely amazing.. I cannot recommend enough the quality of the food at the Bear.. A must go when you next in Havant !

We came to the Bear for dinner on Thursday evening there we’re 6 of us and as usual it was a fantastic evening The staff here are so friendly and helpful and the food is always delicious. The covid measures in place are very good and all Government guidelines are followed we all felt very safe.It was very busy this evening with lots of guests for Goodwood but we were given the same excellent service as always we shall see you very soon

I booked through Greene King for a 2 night stay. First time in this area which was nice, plenty to do and see. The hotel was very well located with a car park, very friendly staff and the food was lovely. The only criticism I have is that because we asked for a dog friendly room we were quite disappointed that it was at the very top of the hotel, which having an old dog wasn't ideal, we had to carry him up the stairs. A feat in itself! The room was clean but very run down, curtain pole coming off the wall, shower also coming loose. The furniture had definitely seen better days!

Great stay fantastic food staff very helpful nothing to much bother. Look forward to our return stay.

During my dinner, the customer service received was excellent and were ver approachable if I had any concerns. Aswell as this the food was cooked amazingly. I would defiantly reccomend this hotel to others and will be returning back soon!

Came to the restaurant for a lunch with some of my friends and it was delicious. Staff where very helpful and catered to all our needs. Will definitely come again.

We had a great visit to the bear Hotel felt very covid safe, the food is the best in havant cannot fault it! The staff are very friendly would definitely recommend and will visit again.

My family and I have recently moved to the area and have tried a few of the local restaurants,however The Bear has definitely been our family favourite. Great menu and amazing food. The Sunday Roast has got to be one of the best we have ever had, lovely friendly staff and atmosphere even through these strange times the staff are so professional regarding the extra safety measures. Certainly a hit with picky children too!!!!

Just had lunch. Fish and chips was lovely and the service from the lady behind the bar was great. Will definitely be on our return list.

Went for the breakfast with santa it was exceptional food was great the grotto was excellent so much hard work had gone into it kids loved their visit with santa and the staff were superb felt really safe considering the covid 19 situation I will definitely come back again thank you for a brilliant time

We recently came to have breakfast with Santa. What a wonderful experience for the children after such a miserable year. The winter wonderland walk is just magical, the staff really have gone above and beyond. The children loved meeting Santa, recieving their gifts and having their photos taken. The food was just delicious, no complaints from two fussy eaters! We will definitely be returning next year. Highly recommend!

Wow, just amazing. The grotto and winter walk were very festive and the kids loved meeting Santa along with the gift. I would recommend this to anyone

The staff were very friendly and very good at following the guidelines of coronavirus. Everything was very clean and the food was delicious.

Today I went and had lunch in The Bear Hotel and I must say I felt very welcome by all the staff members. As soon as we arrived we got told about the one way system and the rules that we had to follow, all of the staff had the correct PPE on abs I felt at ease. The food was amazing full of flavour and presented well. We will definitely be returning

I found the bear to be pretty dated when we arrived and found the staff so rude, when I asked for a remote for the tv and then using the bar for dinner when I over heard the barman say he was sick of uneducated people coming to the area bringing the virus here, well sorry us uneducated people have no choice where we work pal but if it was up to me we wouldnt be here paying your wages.please avoid if you can

Just had lunch at The Bear pub...what can I say brilliant. I had an open sandwich on sour dough. Simple but so lovely. My partner had fish and chips.....crispy chips crispy batter. Will definitely be returning.

I just would like to say we have just a lovely Sunday roast here today.the staff were friendly and looked after us.

What a wonderful family roast we had today. Food was delicious and the service (particularly Hannah) was wonderful. Thank you. Highly recommended

Stayed for one night last weekend. Had read reviews but went regardless, glad we did. Yes the building is old and could do with some money being spent BUT staff were great, everything was so so clean and we genuinely felt looked after.

Food was excellent staff are very friendly and welcoming will definitely bring my family back again and again really enjoyed my visit and experience couldn't ask for a better service

On arrival no welcome greeting from staff . Staff have no name badges and are dressed in xmas jumpers after christmas! Grubby reception area , worn capets on stairs. No mention of missing shower in room .Considering the past history of this old Inn its a great shame that this building is in such a depresssing condition. This Inn could be amazing if it could be updated without missing out on its past history and it is the only hotel in this small town..What a waste of opportunity .A small typed letter in a frame is the only past information available on the wall in reception.Staff are lacking in hospitality training. Staff member in leggings and cami cleaning is not a good impression!! Staff swearing in licenced bar following a request to turn down the loud music which could be heard in the family room above the bar. What a lost opportunity by Greene King to pay attention to a Inn with past history..

All was good, we really enjoyed staying here. Food was nice, people very kind and friendly. Room was perfect clean, tide... unfortunately we had bed experience last month in Derby so was choosing hotel carefully. This hotel is not modern but it’s with soul with perfect environment. Price was responsible. Very much suggesting... ❤️

Just got home from a family birthday celebration weekend away, before we went I read all the negative reviews... there is quite a lot of them so of course we were a bit apprehensive, well i must say this is a fantastic hotel to stay in, I really don’t know where all the negativity comes from. First the rooms...there was 11 of us in 6 rooms, all rooms were very big and spacious with lovely big comfortable beds, very clean and tidy. Now the food, we pre ordered for the Friday night Christmas 3 course dinner and disco, the food was excellent, service was spot on, and dancing the night away.... fantastic. Now the staff...Jane and her daughter could not have been more helpful or friendly, I cannot praise the staff highly enough, they all work very hard, the breakfast is brilliant with lots of choice. Some of the reviews say the hotel is a bit tired... well yes it is but it’s not a brand new modern hotel, if that’s what you want then don’t come here, there is lots of character and charm and also I must mention what a very good price! I would highly recommend this hotel and I’m sure we will definitely be back.

Very friendly staff.Friendly hub-bub, but not noisy breakfast. A mixture of familes, older folks, young couples.Country feel decor (in a good way!).LOADS of choice of food - and lots of it! But not mass-produced like bigger hotels.We were told it was served 7-9 and 7-10. Not sure which is correct, but they were happy to serve us at 08:55!Easy to make good value of the £7 price-tag.

Went to The Bear this evening for a meal out with my partner and my father in law. Hannah and Ryan were very attentive and dealt with us in a kind way, which is lovely as my FiL can be quite difficult due to his illness. Hannah was patient and very friendly. Lots of choice on the menu and food was served quickly. Yes the hotel is a little shabby and tired looking, but it’s very clean and the staff make up for anything lacking. The restaurant is larger but we arrived at 19:00 and were the only ones in there. A few more people did arrive whilst we were eating but these were predominantly businessmen.

Visited for lunch and was surprised at the wide choice of the menu. The lunch menu particularly was very good value for money, and good sized portions. I had the cauliflower cheese tart which was great - very tasty and served hot. The service was a little mixed - staff were very friendly but think there was a changeover while we were there and waited a long time for our plates to be cleared. Toilets were very clean but could do with some refurbishment.

My husband and I stopped over for one night , as always the staff were very helpfull . A big thank you to jane for our room .

Had a fantastic time. There were 14 of us including 3 children. Including 1 who is gluten free and they were able to do a great roast dinner with Yorkshire puddings.

I've been here several times, I'm always concerned about the needless rules about parking.

Had a 3 day stay with my 2 sisters. Room and bed very comfy, plenty of choice for breakfast. Staff very friendly and helpful would definitely stay here again.

Ok, so good & bad points, honestly reviewed:

Lovely old building,great atmosphere and lovely friendly staff.Outside area was nice and quiet.Breakfast was a knock out. Toast,cereals,little pots of jam,marmalade,honey even marmite.All the shops you need.Will be staying again.SOON

Never been in a hotel that is so run down. I've seen better furniture in a second hand shop. Breakfast was under cooked and eggs had to be sent back to be recooked,evening meal only just warm and one of our party was refused ice cream on his dessert. Only good thing about this place was a young Scottish waitress that was too good for the place.

As a family, we normally stay at the bear hotel whenever we visit relatives in the local area.

Having read the reviews, we were not really sure what to expect but we thought we'd keep an open mind.

Had a lovely meal here for dinner one evening, staff were so friendly and it was nice and quiet. Hope to return soon

In restaurant told, I can't deal take your order, even though we're staying in Hotel. I only have one chef & a table of 7 is before you. You'll have to wait! What they haven't all arrived yet! Dreadful attitude & poor customer relations! Gone elsewhere

We were here for a social occasion lunch. Service was OK but food average. Whole building looks tired. Warning - their car park is pay and display and there was no concession offered to us as customers. Those with no pressing need to visit Havant and trust me there is little of interest in the town should look elsewhere.
