Choice of items was pretty good but food was pretty average. I was here for Sunday lunch with my wife and two young children, we ordered two burgers and two children's chicken dipper meals. Fairly simple order but took an hour for the food to come which is simply unacceptable. Lots of other tables were complaining of the time for their meals to arrive too. Service was okay and staff were friendly enough and they appeared well staffed too. But cannot recommend this place for the food wait times alone.

This is the second time we’ve tried food here and it was poor. The first time the carvery was overcooked and without flavour and the burgers were poor quality, dripping with fat and undercooked. The staff were very pleasant and were hard working but we won’t be going a third time.

Pretty disappointed. Food came at different times, daughter's menu option not available and then waited 30 minutes for a replacement. Fries were cold and had to be changed. Tables left uncleared throughout our entire time in the restaurant. Overall a disaster. Will never come back. Disappointed.

We have been here for lunch a number of times over the past few years, unfortunatly we have found that the carvery has deteriated recently. The vegetables are only just warm what we assumed was bubble and squeak was tasteless and the gravy was thick and gluey. The meat was nice and well cooked. The staff are friendly but I dont think we will go again

It's a shame to leave a poor review because the food was actually quite nice however the services was far from that. Me & my Husband was sat outside in the sun and was waiting 30-40 minutes for some starters only to have no cutlery to eat them with. The main meal came out not long after and again no cutlery. Wasn't until the server started to walk away I then had to ask for cutlery and napkins and then we never saw him again. Like I said it's a shame for the poor service because if it wasn't for this we would be coming back because the food was really nice.

The service on this day was non existent. Tables were not being cleaned, no cutlery, no salt and pepper, the wait for pizzas was 45mins to an hour. The food was good though and hot when it finally came. There was one poor lady running around the back dining area trying to keep it clean whilst being the only server of good and drink. Floor had carvery debris everywhere. Really not a nice experience on this day. We actually left without getting our puddings as we really couldn't keep the kids waiting any longer poor little buggers. Shame, as we normally enjoy having a carvery here.

Food - not consistent, over 30 minutes wait on freshly prepared items, carvery gammon was nice but the beef was like leather, carrots and leeks undercooked and cold, stuffing would probably do well as a wallpaper paste…. Puddings ordered, waited half an hour to be told they were delayed then out of stock…. Pretty shocking tbh Customer service - non existent… ordered using qr code - fair enough- staff just not interested Cleanliness- rubbish so I imagine it’s difficult for staff to keep up but by golly it was dirty 👀

We had a very tasty breakfast at the barley mow this morning plenty of choice and freshly cooked it was buffet stye I saw the chefs regularly toping the food up. And the bar staff were really friendly and acknowledged us when we came in and left I would strongly recommend the breakfast If you are in the area we will be back when we next visit hayling island

Review from 23 April 2025 We returned to the Barley Mow which has taken a significant turn for the worse. Despite another price increase, we had two of the thinnest slices of meat possible each, but made worse by being served on cold (not hot or warm plates) and the vegetables were tasteless and just lukewarm. A truly awful meal, and a huge disappointment, so despite having been a regular at the Barley Mow for 20-30 years, I doubt we will return. Review from Jan 25 The recent redecoration of the Barley Mow has made the venue far more attractive as an eatery. Lizzie served us at the bar on the last two occasions and she was welcoming, pleasant, cheerful and professional; it’s good to see an improvement in the staff from a few months ago. We’ve used the carvery for years and the food was as good as ever. Thank you. J&L

We really enjoyed our Easter lunch at the Barley Mow. The carvery was delicious and although we had to wait a little for our other nails. we were informed this when we ordered. We didn't mind as we could see it was busy and the food was worth the wait. The staff were polite and the atmosphere was good. Thanks to all the staff at the Barley Mow, who were all clearly working very hard.

We ordered 3 burgers and some garlic bread. It took 1 hour and 45 minutes! We complained and they kept saying 5 more minutes. Absolutely ridiculous! The people at the table next to us waited for 2 hours and also complained multiple times. Due to the fact you have to pay in advance we waited, otherwise we would have left! 1 star is even to much!

Well where do I start.....! We ordered 2 adult vegan meals, 1 children's vegan meal, 1 adults burger meal and 1 meat free carvery. The meat free option at the carvery was 2 yorkshire puddings (?) It was all only luke-warm and very bland. The vegan burgers arrived with bacon in them. We sent them back and were told that it would be another 15 minutes to get fresh burgers. The children's meal was left on the counter and not brought over so we collected it ourselves. When the fresh vegan burgers arrived they were served with a side on coleslaw in mayonnaise. At the end of our meal we had to go and ask for the children's ice lolly which took another 10 mins to arrive. It wasn't particularly busy time as there were lots of empty tables. This was very disappointing as we had had a very nice meal there 2 days before. I will not be returning!

Awful experience. Despite prebooking, we waited 1hour 40mins for our food. Way beyond the prebooked leaving time we had to register before arriving. At no point did staff approach our table and explain anything. We actively had to seek them out (they were very polite), to be told ours is next or around 5mins. (It was not in fact, it was more than 25mins) The meals arrived so staggered some had finished eating before the last meals arrived. We didnt receive Some of the sides advertised with the dishes. We had no cutlery provided so had to find our own, some of which was very dirty. From our table we saw and heard many families conplaining and offered conpnesation, drinks etc. None of which was provided to us. It truly was a terrible experience.

Thought we'd hit the jackpot on the first night of our holiday. As we passed the Barley Mow on the way to investigate the beach, we saw it was 50% off all burgers. Deciding to take up the offer we were able to order directly from our phone via the QR code on the table. Two adult burgers and one children's burger for our son (we had our newborn with us too). One would assume the kitchen staff would be prepared to serve quite a few burgers and that service would be quick, given the offer that day they were promoting, We waited. There were two chefs enjoying a bit of banter with the waiting staff (open kitchen), from their body language you would never have have guessed they had a mountain of tickets piling up and a load of already very unhappy customers. The waiting staff were pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu, but clearly frustrated by the chefs. After 20 minutes or so we realised we had made a big mistake. Many other customers were inquiring about their food, but the bar staff were continuing to take orders with no warning about the wait time. The chefs still seemed to lack any urgency at all and by this time, the manager (I assume) had started to help in the kitchen. Every time a customer would enquire about their food the manager would say "it's literally the next order". We ordered some more drinks to pass the time. 45 minutes and At this point we decided to get some crisps from the bar as our son had begun crying out of hunger as he could smell food, but still no sign of our order. We ordered more drinks from the bar. 1 hour and things were clearly very wrong in the kitchen. At this point it seemed nearly every customer in the restaurant was complaining to the staff about their wait on food. At this point a family near us (that also had a crying son due to the wait on food), complained for the second or third time. Their food came about 10 minutes after. Now this family ordered their food way after we did (they came in after we sat down)and at this point I had really had enough as clearly the chefs were swapping the order of the tickets on order of most grumpy customers. I spoke to the manager (who was polite and apologetic) who informed us our food was next. When the burgers were put on the pass (1 hour 20 minutes later), I collected them myself as it clearly was going to be quicker than waiting for a member of staff to do it. My wife had a pot of coleslaw with barely anything in it and my burger had no coleslaw at all. I took the food back and complained to the chef. The burgers came back and the manager informed me that the vegan burger (mine) didn't come with any as the mayo used isn't vegan, but there was no mention of this on the menu. The manager bought two full pots of coleslaw and said the extra one was to make up for the long wait. I asked if that was to be the extent of the compensation and he politely offered a free drink and dessert for all of us. We took them up on the offer as at this point it was getting dark outside, so we had no opportunity to explore the beach and our baby needed to be fed. As we are only staying on hayling island a few days, this experience robbed us of a pleasant evening. I spoke to the manager as we were leaving (who I genuinely felt sorry for) and asked him if he was short staffed. He said yes and that staffing for that day had been messed up completely. I couldn't help but think that the chefs were still so complacent given the situation they were in. We left feeling miserable about out first night on hayling island and having spent way more on drinks than we intended. Only upside was the food wasn't bad. This was easily the worst dining experience I have ever had.

Absolutely horrendous experience. My family and I made a pit-stop here for dinner after a brilliant holiday on the island, and I really wished we hadn't of bothered. I booked a table for 5:30pm and upon arrival, despite a sign stating "Please wait here to be seated", no member of staff arrived to greet us or take us to a table. In fact, after a few minutes of standing by the door like confused lemons, it was one of the regulars who told us to "just go on through to any table" because "no staff will come". A bit bemused, and wondering what the point was in booking a table in the first place, we made our way through the restaurant and got ourselves seated. I ordered some drinks via the Stonehouse app which, to be fair, were served pretty quickly. It's a shame I can't say the same about the food. We ordered five meals at about 6pm and after a little while waiting, I noticed all was not well with the service. Other people were complaining and making comments about how long they were having to wait for their food - not a good sign. After waiting 50 minutes ourselves, I decided to go up and ask how long our food would be. I was polite, and even said "I can see you're struggling tonight", but, with all due respect, that wasn't my problem. I had paid good money and had three hungry & tired children with me, plus we still had over an hour's drive home ahead of us. I was told "your food is next, they're just doing it now" and given a time period of "another 10 minutes". We waited another 10 minutes, still no sign of our food. We'd now been waiting an hour. One of my children had ordered a carvery, so I just went up and got hers for her at this point, even though I'd asked for our meals to be served at the same time. After this, our meals came out staggered, with my other child being served last and had to wait a total of 1 hour and 40 minutes for his very small burger and small portion of fries. Absolutely unacceptable. We then realised there was no cutlery on our table, so I had to get some from another table and one of the knives clearly hadn't been washed properly. Tables around us hadn't been cleared, other families were still complaining about the service; it was just an awful experience. Also, some of the people complaining were offered free drinks and dessert as way of compensation for the terrible service, yet we were not offered anything. It seemed the harder you complained, the more you got, which isn't fair. The staff knew how long we'd been waiting and should've had the courtesy to come over and offer us the same, but we got nothing, which was charming. Needless to say, we will never be visiting this place again and would never recommend it to anyone. It was a very miserable end to what was otherwise a very happy family holiday. If I could give it a zero out of five, I would. Even 1 star is being generous.

We arrived around 5pm after booking a table, as stated at the door we waited to be seated but we were completely ignored until I approached a member staff who showed us to a table, it was not busy at all probably 3-4 tables as we walked through the restaurant there were tables full of glasses and plates we sat down no explanation of how it all worked if someone took our order ect so we figured this out for ourselves. We ordered fairly quickly at the bar the female on the bar was lovely! It was still very quite after about half an hour we thought our food would have arrived by now but no sign we hit 45 mins so I asked a member of staff who returned to say should be out in a minute another 15 min and so an hour wait in total our food started to arrive but one meal at a time! With the children's meals arriving last and some of had finished by the time our last meal arrived! We asked to speak the manager on 3 occasions who avoided us and never came over, as we had to preorder pudding we asked for these again we waiting a long time and they all arrived in dribs and drabs... If it had been busy I'd completely understand the wait but it was not busy at all we were never even offer an apology. On leaving there were other tables starting to complain, We left very disappointed!

The food service was appalling we got here at 5.30 it’s now nearly 7pm and we are still waiting it wasn’t until we kicked off that they managed to bring our food out at last I’m diabetic and need to eat my friend went to the bar to complain about the service and 2 minutes later our food came ….. other tables were in the same position as us and we all had children with us …. I came here in the summer months… but I might go somewhere else from now on so disappointed…… and the side coleslaw in the pictures …. Not even quarter full… as you can see by the picture…. Tracy

I am in fear of wasting my time writing this review as I have looked back at all the bad reviews with the manager or staff member replying to them with apologies but having just had the carvery there I can see there has been zero improvement. My husband and I met another couple for lunch and can safely say the roast was the very worst I have had in my 55 years of eating roast dinners. It was tasteless mush! The roasts potatoes where soggy ,rubbery and zero taste...you where only allowed one slice of meat on the regular roast, the Yorkshire puddings where the same as the roast potatoes, the vegetables had never heard of Al dente and you could not distinguish whether you had a carot or a bit of cabbage in your mouth as it was all so bland and tasteless, the gravy had very little taste along with the cheap sauces and the cauliflower cheese had no real cheese on and what it did have was just like a cardboard taste....nothing! It was quite frankly a mass of disgusting pigs swill . The only good thing where the waitresses who where helpful and polite so thank you for that at least. So beware if you want a nice meal, in my opinion, this is not the place to go.

Friendly enough place. Service was painfully slow. 40 minutes for food and it wasn’t busy. My BBQ pulled pork burger was ok. The sauce was nice and toppings, but the beef patties were kebab van quality. If I’d been at a kebab van I would have been delighted but not a pub. Kids meals were good value. Overall ok but wouldn’t go back.

We visited the Barley Mow as a group and, unfortunately, left feeling thoroughly disappointed. While it’s possible the team was having an off day, the quality of the food was well below expectations. The beef was stringy and tough to chew, and the burgers could have easily passed for something you'd find at a Wetherspoons—hardly worth the price. We ordered a mix of desserts, including four adult and four children’s options. After being informed there were no waffles for the waffle sundaes, we were told they would be substituted with extra ice cream. That seemed fair enough—until the desserts arrived. The first two brought to the table had barely a scoop of ice cream and certainly didn’t resemble what we’d expect for an adult sundae. The staff delivering them were unsure what they were carrying, checked multiple areas, and then returned to insist they were indeed the adult sundaes. In all honesty, they looked more like the children’s portions. Despite this, we accepted them and politely asked for the rest of the order to be checked on. Two more children’s desserts followed, then another mix of one child’s and one adult’s a while later. The final two—one child’s and one adult dessert—had to be chased up several times. Each time we were told they were “just coming,” but they took an unreasonably long time to arrive. There was a clear breakdown in communication and organisation among the waiting staff, who didn’t seem to know what had been ordered or what they were serving. The bar staff, on the other hand, were friendly, polite, and helpful—which was one of the few positives. Regrettably, based on this experience, it’s not a place I’ll be returning to anytime soon.

Friendly from walking in the door to clearing our table. Ordered meat free carvery and BBQ pulled pork burger, my son said this is the best burger he has had in a long while. My meat free carvery was self service of veg, which was fresh and delicious, although needed a light salting (but that's always gonna be to taste isn't it!) My veg tart didn't arrive BUT the fab "gaffer" baked me a new one to take home. All in all, the place is newly refurbished so nice and clean, ALL the staff are friendly and helpful and for the first time in ages, we've had a great meal ina great place with GREAT service. If I ever come back to Hayling island I will definitely return and HIGHLY recommend. Thank you Mothering Sunday Team

We had a lovely meal there for my Wife’s Birthday. The food was great, value for money and the service amazing. As we were in the area on holiday, we took our very friendly Labrador with us. He was looked after amazingly by the friendly and helpful staff. He made some new friends with Mickey, Darcy and Larna who couldn’t stop popping over to give him a fuss and provide treats. This is a very average place as well as an average carvery. Location- A typical pub setting with plenty of parking and room for disability parking. We had to wait to be seating and it seemed that they were short staff. Carvery- We had to wait ages as the queue was extremely long. The staff were rude with regard to the meat allowances as many people had questions. Bad quality meats, very fatty. They had the usual- roast potatoes, carrots, green beans, stuffing and mash (Not the best variety). We won’t be rushing back but it was okay if you want a quick carvery to fill a gap.

Food was okay. Service speed if ordered from the app, very slow. Took an hour to get 4 starters out. Staff is just walking around while there are so many tables to clear up... If you are coming here just to drink, sure thing. Plan on having food? Take the day off. Price wise for what you get is okay however!

Lovely carvery with my family here today. The beef was wonderful, gammon was so good too. We even had puddings and the apple pie was fantastic! Service was great at the bar from Chantelle and good quality food and service from Layla at the carvery the food was nice and hot and great atmosphere. Thank you we will be back soon!

Great carvery! My friend ordered a pancake dessert and after waiting over half an hour it was brought out with no pancakes as they said tgey had ran out but they didnt inform her of this. Roast was good 👍🏽

This is a really nice place. Food was affordable and good , Customer service top notch. Shout out to Laila, who is such a pleasant person. Visited the Barley Mow for breakfast. Great service, there was no black pudding, so the lady serving said it would be a couple of minutes, by the time I took my drinks to our table, Laila came and told me that it was ready. The black pudding was cooked to perfection, best black pudding I’ve eaten on the south coast. Food was fresh and piping hot, will definitely return.

Popped in at "The Barley Mow" last summer while visited Hayling Island. The restaurant atmosphere were amazing.Food was so yummy,and I can't wait to get back one day!!! Laila who served us was very lovely and friendly. I highly recommended to other friend whoever like to visit Hayling.

Disappointed dirty tables, atmosphere horrible/staff rude, severe food allergy. Manager very rude asked about menu and allergies got rude response and said speak to bar and walked off when trying continue speaking to him: went to bar and ordered food Jamie at the bar was very polite and helpful and apologised for his bosses behaviour. I was told they needed to find the allergy tablet so I could fill it in as I have a severe allergy. They was going to bring it to me at the table and never happened as they couldn’t find it. My husband had pizza it was lovely no issue at all , I had carvery the food itself was lovely but the lady serving it needs retraining she was cleaning the side where the food is , dropped the cloth on the floor, then picked it up and carried on cleaning the food service with food on there for the carvery. When it came to desserts we ordered Mine with vegan custard due to my allergies and 15 mins later someone come to the table and said they didn’t have any vegan custard but had vegan ice cream would that have been ok. We said yes thank you. The desserts came out when I took one mouthful of my ice cream it didn’t taste right, so I asked my husband to try it and he said it is normal ice cream not vegan which is also what I thought. I didn’t eat anymore of it. 5 mins later I didn’t feel 100% and ran to the toilet and was violently sick as they had given me something I’m allergic to. This is not good enough and has made me seriously sick now. The manager didn’t care at all and just walks away when you try talking to him. I am a head chef myself and if this happened in my kitchen there would be severe consequences something needs to be done about it. My husband will also be reporting this to EHO as this is health and safety and put my life in danger.

Hard one: salmon nicoise v good. Lasagna dreadful - a cold slab of (actually juicy) shin beef ruined by thick heavy custard bechamel (?). No silky tomato sauce ( I’ve done it with a rich puttanesca and it can be delish). A bit of cold side salad an 2 slices of ciabatta Quite indigestible Chef night off? Leftovers? Fab pub but avoid this special!!!

Thought I’d bring my family here for some lunch today being nice weather and right on the beach. Well, what can I say, This place really does deliver the whole package! From friendly staff, to quick service and beautiful food cooked to perfection 👌 My husband and eldest son both had the 8oz beef burger with sides of chicken wings and mac and cheese, the portions were big and everything was cooked just right. We ordered 2 kids chicken chunks and chips and they were really generous portions and the kids loved it (they are fussy kids too) I really enjoyed the crispy pork belly bites in Asian sauce. The location is great right on the beach, the sun was shining, all in all a really lovely few hours spent. Definitely compliments to the chef ☺️ We will definitely be visiting again soon!

Sunny lunchtime so we sat in the garden. Hanging baskets had dried up remains of flowers in them, similarly the pots which have been planted but not watered so everything has died. Everywhere, inside and out looks sad.
