Barley Mow in Havant

We always go here for a dinner and the food is always spot on everytime. We won't be going anywhere else Sorry to say but this place has gone down hill very quick. The pizzas are a complete rip off as all your paying for is flavoured cardboard as for the carvery that is a joke as well the veg is left out to long and it's all dry and not good. Also the carvery area is never clean and there is bits of food everywhere. Please get this sorted and get the restaurant back to its old slandered where it was a nice place to eat. Thanks

1st time I have been in a few years due to bad food. Had a take out last night. The management, Mike, and the bar staff Jamie were amazing. The food was piping hot and truly delicious. I will be back again

We had the misfortune of breaking down in front of the barley mow and the staff couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. The food was great and the staff were so very friendly.

Been in here a few times lately. Can definitely see the new manager is making his changes. Amazing food , carvery in particular , would definitely record and return back

We moved to hayling island in November last year and we have been in this place at least once a week since! 😆 we love the 50% off burger and pizza nights. Great value for money 💰

Had breakfast today , spoilt by not having real butter to go on the toast ,therefore no toast with our breakfast. Not the first time ,previously had a large tub of cooking margarine put by the toaster but today they had gone to the effort of putting the cheap spread in individual portions in plastic dishes ,not sure if they thought nobody would realise .

Took my grandson to go get some dinner, he’s a bit picky and didn’t want a lot of what was on their menu, our server Rahmat and of course the chefs were really accommodating to this, put my grandson a special meal together that consisted of what he wanted off of the menu.

First time visiting here and the team looked after me and my family very well. Portion sizes were huge and Mickys customer service will be the main reason we come back! Good job

Very nice venue, food was good, service also very friendly and welcoming. Regular carvery was a reasonable size (a tiny bit more meat would be good), otherwise a very nice meal had by all (pizzas looked amazing)

Came for breakfast with colleagues. We’re told upon arrival that there were no eggs and no black pudding. This is 2 out of the 10 items usually available on the breakfast buffet. We asked if there was a discount on offer but were told there was not. On the positive side, mushrooms are now pert of the buffet rather than an item you have to pay extra for 🤷🏻‍♀️

The recent redecoration of the Barley Mow has made the venue far more attractive as an eatery. Lizzie served us at the bar on the last two occasions and she was welcoming, pleasant, cheerful and professional; it’s good to see an improvement in the staff from a few months ago. Went to Barley Mow to celebrate my sons birthday, had a lovely meal. Warm welcome as soon as we walked in. My husband and I had the carvery and my son had a pizza, we then all had a pudding, the chocolate cookie, delicious. Have been a few times and never disappointed, by the food or the staff. I would throughly recommend a visit and look forward to returning soon.

4 of us went for a Sunday carvery. Food was lovely and staff were very friendly, we couldn't fault them. We will 100% be going back.

Can honestly say I’ve NEVER been to a carvery( and I go to many regularly ) run out of meat , and it being approx 2pm , we were the last to be served and told 40 minute wait for the meat to be cooked after we had the scraps of what was there and nothing said to us when we ordered our roasts at the bar they just took our order and money . After finishing our plates sat at our table for a good 40 minutes while waiting for desserts with staff walking in by looking at the table full of plates and completely ignoring that fact . After asking about the desserts we were waiting for the plates were cleared after the desserts were squeezed onto the table . You may think it was busy …we wee one of about 3 maybe 4 tables . Absolutely will go elsewhere from now on this is not what you expect from a carvery at lunchtime .

Here for lunch today and had a really good time. Bren, Mickey and Dave, we’re all making the time they’re good for all customers. The pizza was lovely and cooked fresh. Thankyou all. Would highly recommend coming here, it’s a very relaxed environment and the staff are brilliant

Atrocious service. Completely understaffed, and the ones that were there were completely disinterested. It wasn’t busy - just a handful of diners. We were encouraged to use the QR code on the table to order which we did. The food when it eventually arrived wasn’t correct. There was no service to see if everything was okay The main course food was ok but small portions. For dessert we thought we’d order at bar instead to see if that helped. It took 45 minutes for dessert to arrive (only two ice cream sundaes and sticky toffee pudding) and one of those was incorrect. Management need to realise that cutting staff to save money by using online ordering techniques does not improve the dining experience. Quite the opposite. Also realise that you need more staff, and the ones that are there could do with visiting the tables to actually offer some service. Appalling. Will not be visiting again.

I've been going for many years for breakfast always enjoyed it, but today wasn't good... the choice wasn't as much as usual, they had margarine no butter, sugar was in a big pot for all to use, caugh in it, use same spoon not happy with it at all today. Sorry to put this on .....

My mum came in with my nan and a couple of friends for my nans 85th birthday lunch, great service, lovely food, everybody wished her a happy birthday and everyone really enjoyed the day. Thankyou very much

Complete shambles from the moment we walked through the door. We had a table booked for Boxing Day lunch, since November for a big family meal. When we arrived our table wasn’t ready, nor did any one have any urgency to get it ready. We ended up moving the tables around ourselves to accommodate the amount of us. We had pre ordered the food online as advised when we paid the deposit. They didn’t have our pre order so it had to be put through again. It took over an hour for our starters to arrive, and when they did the lady couldn’t tell us which was the adults or children’s because she couldn’t speak English. So half the kids had adult meals and vice versa. We obviously couldn’t tell which was which until they were on the table next to each other being eaten. The main came next which didn’t come out together. Meaning 2 of us weren’t eating while everyone else was. The dessert then took atleast another hour, we asked for it several times as by this point the children were fed up and restless. In total we were there for over 3 hours! As a family that mostly reside on Hayling Island, The Barley Mow is a place we visit often. Unfortunately due to our most recent experience we won’t be returning. The manager came over to deal with our complaint but to be honest, he looked completely fed up himself.

New years breakfast find after our usual place was closed. All you can eat buffet breakfast was really good. The roast dinner looked fantastic too.

Came here for Christmas dinner and was very happy. Food was good and the staff where very friendly. Will definitely rebook for next year.

Alright but nothing spectacular. We came as a large sitting that was booked yet the kitchen and bar seemed very understaffed. Kitchen dealt with our orders ticket by ticket - this doesn’t make any sense having worked in the hospitality sector for many years. Then got brought out the wrong order - of which waiting staff argued about and had to prove it wasn’t any of our orders ticket numbers. Over a £5 pizza - at that point it would have just been easier to address rather than argue about it. While we were still eating after one of our members waiting 45 minutes on a pizza the staff then argued that we had the sides on that order. We hadn’t. We also had some carvery ordered; had no guidance on what to do with this got told to go up. Whilst stood waiting we can hear kitchen staff and waiting staff arguing. Not professional in the slightest. Then the woman serving the carvery (who was defo doing a lot of leg work for other people) started serving us and was obviously stressed. Asked for tickets even though we got told we should have just gone up. That’s common miscommunication. This woman then turned out to be the nicest member of staff we met in the whole establishment. Overall a very dissatisfying service experience. The only positive was it was reasonable priced and the bar staff served quickly!

Lovely trip to eat, pizza was amazing. The waitress called Larna was particularly friendly and great service.

Well coming from the Wednesday car Boot Sale,my wife suggested having a Cavery in Thd Barley Mow. We had visited numerous times before and found it a great experience. So we found the price had increased considerately ,but so has everything else .But what a difference ,Firstly the Staff were excellent .But the food looked OK so we took our meals ,and sat down .IT WAS BARELEY WARM. We asked if our meals could be Microwaved ,but was told no they couldn't, but he said your welcome to get another meal ,but that would still be nearly cold ,so I asked if we could have containers to take it home these were supplied quickly .as stated thd staff were helpful but what has happened,are there new owners because something has changed .it was always so good reluctantly not now

Had the Christmas Day Carvery here which was probably the worst dining experience I've ever had. Paid £58 per head for 5 us for a 3 course meal. Reserved a table for 2 O Clock. Upon arrival we had to wait outside for 5 minutes due to the queue to enter. Once we were shown to our table we had to wait 20 minutes for the starter, this was the best part of the meal. A pleasant tomato soup. From there we didn't receive any table service again. The plates were never cleared even upon request so we had to stack them at the end of the table. We then went up and got our carvery. The Turkey was nice enough but the potatoes tasted like cardboard (had gone soft and dry) due to being under the heat lamp since last Christmas. These plates were then not cleared and an hour went by before receiving 2 out of the 5 puddings which were meant to be ice cream with a choice of sauce and toppings. We received 2 half melted single scoops of ice cream. Then a slice of luke warm apple pie turned up 5 minutes later. Needless to say the remaining two of us couldn't be bothered to wait and walked out. In summary I've received far better at Harvester and Toby Carvery for a third of the price.

Went on boxing day. They have all menus on tables but when went to order food as menus state that pizza on a Thursday are subsidised was told it was full price. Why have menus on tables if not going to honour the deals. Will not be going ever again.

i left my keys and Mickey spotted me stupidly leave them on the table and ran out to give them to me while i was blissfully unaware of me 20 minutes away from being locked out of my house- thank you so much! also when I am working i have to pay differently as my service users ou seperately and he is always very attentive and understanding that it is a bit of a tedious process, thank you so much!

Took a while to place our order but after that no complaints. Carlos was attentive and polite. Food was as described and tasty at a good price. What was very good is our grandson did not want oregano on his pizza. They duly obliged. We will use again . The one downside was the cost of a pint of draught pepsi max which at over £4 is a bit much.

Good standard of carvery food plus other options including pizza made in front of you. Lots of veg choice. Very friendly and helpful staff committed to customer satisfaction. The Stonehouse app is essential for special offers and discounts but is easy to use. Will definitely visit again and try other Stonehouse restaurants.

First visit, had the carvery. Right amount of meat which was tender. Good choice of veg. Could of had a tad more custard with the dessert. Staff were friendly (shout out to Carlos). Would go back again.

Had an amazing carvery in here today and my nephew had a bbq chicken burger which was also amazing. Puddings were to die for and we all enjoyed the waffle desserts. The waitress was attentive and answered all I asked, her name was Hannah and Carlos was extremely polite and went above and beyond speaking to us ensuring everything was OK. Will definitely be visiting again. Keep up the great work.

This is a cavernous place seating 200+ ... so not cosy and more geared up for volume. Eleven older guys met for lunch, eight of which chose the carvery and filled their boots! But a lack of choice of draught beers, and a poor quality red wine, upset some! It is good value, but then it's more of a canteen or cafeteria than a restaurant.

The place was nice, the food was good and Darcy's customer service was perfect too! 5 stars!

The Carvery was very nice, other than that we were rather disappointed. We ordered starters which took over 45 minutes to arrive, when they did, my brothers, which was a garlic flatbread, was burnt beyond belief and had to be returned, it was completely inedible as it was like cardboard, I on the other hand ordered garlic dough balls which were seriously undercooked, lacked flavour and was overall just very underwhelming. You also had no prawn cocktails which my mum and nan were very disappointed with. Two of our party ordered off the regular menu, their chips were cold and very sparse. You completely run out of gravy, so we were unable to eat our Carvery until the gravy was replenished which took roughly 10 minutes. We also had to request our desserts after waiting ages after our main course, when these started to arrive at the table we were short by 2 desserts, so had to chase these up. When they were finally brought over, one was wrong and we had to wait even longer for the correct dessert to be given. There was no soap in the mens or ladies toilets, and only toilet roll in one of the ladies cubicles. Alot of the staff didn't seem to know what they were doing and some clearly did not want to be there. Overall we were very disappointed with our visit and we will not be returning.

Disappointing. Food came incorrect. Pudding was forgotten about. Arrived 45 minute later incorrectly. Asked the waitress for a refund on the incorrect one. He said she would ask the manager who didn't bother to do anything until I spoken to him myself. I wouldn't bother going here anymore obviously gone right down hill with a new manager.

6 of us had lunch there on Saturday 7th December at 1pm. Everyone’s food was barely warm. The food itself was excellent but who wants to eat luke warm food.

I've visited this restaurant for Sunday dinner with my partner for the past two weekends. The carvery is excellent, offering a richer and more flavorful experience than typical establishments like 'Toby Carvery,' all at a competitive price point. However, the service leaves room for improvement. The restaurant appears to be understaffed, resulting in significant delays. On both occasions, we waited 10 to 15 minutes just to be greeted at the door. While the convenience of collecting the carvery immediately after ordering is appreciated, the service for drinks has been consistently slow. Both times, we were more than halfway through our meals before our drinks arrived, despite my partner being a particularly slow eater. This inconsistency in service is disappointing given the high quality of the food. I hope the management addresses these issues soon, as it detracts from an otherwise enjoyable dining experience.

Nice place for a reasonably priced meal

Nice meal for our big group of 10. Resolved any issues super quickly and efficiently. Customer service was 10/10 all eve in particular our server Cameron. Excellent customer service skills, very warmly welcomed. First time back in years and will be back very soon

A large pub with plenty of seating. Ordered at the bar as phone Internet would not allow us to use the QR code. We ordered 2 adult carveries and a kids carvery and ordered the kids pudding at this time too. We were given 3 carvery tickets and our drinks. When we had finished our meals I approached a staff member to have the child's pudding to the table, over 20 minutes later when nothing had arrived I chased it up. I was told that without the ticket the chef wouldn't make it. As we hadn't been given a ticket at time of ordering I told Lewis that we would not have been able to provide this. The nice waiter spoke to the chef again, I could see and hear from where I was sat and the chef refused again, VERY grumpily. The waiter, Lewis then went to the bar to sort this out for us. Thanks to Lewis our young one did eventually get his pudding. I then saw the chef (Konnor) having a go at another member of staff. In any kitchen this is not acceptable but particularly an open kitchen. I appreciate that tickets are a system the pub uses but when the bar has not handed them all across, there should be a way to sort this out without the chef getting arsey to everyone. I suggest some customer service training for Konnor, urgently.

Fantastic place to meet.up with friends and have a decent carvery whilst there! Good prices too. No need to book in advance...plenty of tables! Manager was great. Took a small issue and resolved in minutes...above and beyond even.

The staff were so friendly and helpful and our waitress was so efficient and lovely, she couldn’t do enough for us, she went above and beyond and made my dad’s 60th birthday so special! Ramat was fantastic and really looked after us and was extremely efficient, the carvery was absolutely amazing too, thank you so much for having us!

We had our Christmas party at the Barley Mow, the food was great and we were really well looked after by all the staff, special mention to Mickey and Hope for serving us, Brandon Joe and Konnor for Cooking some great food, and Liz at the bar for quick drinks service. Very much recommended!

Had a bottomless at hayling island by liss she was very good all round

Food was cold. Feta pasta dish had 8 pieces of pasta in it so I e sent it back. Carvery…meat was ok…cauliflower cheese was hard and without cheese…potatoes were disgusting. 3 chicken wings in a starter = tiny portion. Staff were useless. The “head chef” swore and spoke loudly so the patrons could hear him. The place was freezing and no heating was on so the children were wearing their car blankets. Toilets dirty. The baby change toilet had poop splash backs dried on and the toilet brush needs throwing away. Best thing about the place was that the decoration was nice and fresh. We won’t be coming back.

First time back to eat since the previous 2 star post. So much better. Refurbishment and a change of management and staff make it an all together impressive experience. We will return.

We went to the barley mow mid week with a big group of friends. The carvery was ok, good value. The pub is big, with lots of little areas, which really works as it lets you have a space to be noisy or quiet. Downgraded to a 3 after one of our group got a parking ticket for £100. The pub sorted it, but...

Everything was very nice, the carvery was great and the pudding was nice, It could have had a slightly bigger portion of ice cream on most of the puddings we ordered, but it was very tasty nonetheless.

Lack of staff on arrival and food was cold.

Thank you Mickey and team for a great visit. We were staying nearby on a weekend away and came for an early lunch before heading home. Great service and yummy food.The wait on food was minimal and evetything was piping hot. Eating out with kids can be tricky at times, but we all really enjkyed it and the staff were extra friendly with the children. Id recommend to other families :-)

Great experience. We surprised our Granddaughter with a visit and she was allowed to take her lunch break with us which was a great gesture from the team. Food was great and service was above and beyond. Will definitely visit again when on the Island.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Now I have your attention, please be aware that the car park is operated by Euro Car Parks Ltd. If you fail to notice the parking signs asking for payment by phone, the like me you might find that two months later you are contacted by Debt Recovery Direct (not Euro Car Parks Ltd), who will ask for a settlement figure of £170. Yes for two over-priced cokes it’s cost me sooo much more. To add insult to injury the staff will not even warn you about the charge to use the car park.

Met the lovely manager Carlos who was very helpful. I had the best pizza here tonight and will definitely be back again.

The all-you-can-eat breakfast was good value at only £5.99. However a pint of Pepsi Max costs £4.10 !!! I think it would have been cheaper for me to drink alcohol and get drunk!

On entering the pub at 5pm on Saturday 19 October, we could see the majority of tables littered with dirty plates, and food stacked under the hot lamp ready to be served. The pub wasn't especially busy, which was confusing. We decided not to stay and went somewhere else that was better staffed.

Dropped in on spec with a big group (about 20 of us) on a Monday evening. Plenty of space for us all to sit together as it was very quiet. Lovely friendly service. Most of us had a carvery which was good, and a bonus on a Monday night! Thanks Helen and the team.

Food was great service was terrible was left waiting 5 mins at the front of the pub then sat myself down and ordered at the bar. Had to go and wipe clean my own knife’s and forks as there were none on the table no salt and pepper or any sauces real shame because the food was great but a very poorly run pub saw many customers come in wait at the door then walk out

This isn’t my first time I’ve visited the Barley Mow, and to be honest I can say I’ve never been disappointed. Today it was still quite busy at the bar which is surprising as a school day so I utilised the app to order which was nice and easy and hassle free. We always head straight through and into the old barn area, the seating is nice and comfortable and it’s usually nice and quiet. The Barley Mow has recently been closed for refurbishment and it’s looking good. Every time I go into this place there always a smell which reminds me of being on holiday and so naturally makes the stay feel lovely. Staff are really friendly, the chef who served us was really helpful and super friendly lol. Today we had the standard Calvary dinner with no optional pigs in blankets, but they are good so if you’re really hungry go for it. Today’s selection of meats were Turkey (my favourite), Gammon and Beef to choose from. The other other usually goes halfie halfie with Turkey and Gammon but today my choice was the turkey. The vegetable selection was great with a big selection to choose from. The only thing I would say which is a little bit disappointing is the drinks were top heavy on the pricing. £4 for a cola seems a bit steep to me but there you go. In summary a really decent meal which I always find very filling and yummy. It’s great for couples of for families as loads of space and different seating options. Parking is free and usually plenty of space. I think this is a top grade for both the locals of hayling island and also holiday makers who hayling sees a lot of a year. I’ll be interested to hear your comments and findings too please ***** Great place

The 7 of us enjoyed a lovely evening - great atmosphere, very welcoming - the only thing which made food a 4 ✨️ and not 5 was the only gravy available was beef and I only eat chicken or turkey so of course would only have chicken gravy - moving forward this could with little effort be added to their delicious carvery menu as without gravy it made the carvery drier than I would like.
