A little perplexed by some of the reviews here. After reading the reviews we were in two minds but glad we went. Highly recommend this amazing pub/restaurant. We dined again here for lunch and The Victoria did not disappoint again. From the service to the food, the whole experience was exceptional. We genuinely felt the team went the extra mile. We were celebrating an engagement and the staff went out their way in celebrating with us. For some of us visiting a restaurant in the Surrey/Oxshott area that has extremely top standards and fantastic food on our doorstep is a massive bonus. We really don't often feel the need to leave reviews, but in contrast, the occasional dismissive reviews questioning the value or quality of the dishes is a little discerning. We found such criticisms to be unfounded. There are plenty of alternative "boozers"with pub grub within a driving range of Oxshott. If you're looking for a really good experience with high quality ingredients The Victoria Surrey pub/restaurant ticks all the boxes. The decor and atmosphere are kept to a high standard. The restaurants meticulous attention and the atmosphere further enhanced our dining ambiance. If you're accustomed to consuming a voracious diet perhaps on a discounted price this place isn't for you. If like us you're in search of a really nice spot in Surrey to dine in - The Victoria is it.

Like some previous reviews the lack of white table cloths in a Michelin star restaurant.

Visited The Victoria for dinner with friends last night for the first time, after hearing that a Head Chef I liked elsewhere, had joined the 'Victoria team'. Despite being told it was quiet on Thursdays, the restaurant had a lovely atmosphere and didn't feel quiet at all. The decor is beautiful and open fire a nice touch on a cold evening. Extensive drinks menu and great selection on both the a la carte and bar menus. Service was attentive without being intrusive and the food was brilliant! Will definitely go back; perhaps in the summer when the garden is open.

I will never be able to order sticky toffee pudding after this. I just know I will never have one that is as nice again! The staff were wonderful and the food was out of this world... the quality is on a par with any of the Tom Kerridge restaurants we have eaten at...

The Bear organised a family wake. It was simple to organise and the staff were very helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend.

Exceptional food, poor service. I cannot fault the food, it was fantastic, definitely fine dining. If I was to be picky, I would say there was too long a wait between courses, but the actual food was faultless. A proper fine dining restaurant needs to have both excellent food and service, and this is where the experience fell well short. The service was awful. We were sitting right in the mix so not stuck away in a corner but still became forgotten about. It was apparent from observation that the waiting staff were concentrating on a few large tables at the expense of others which is very poor, all tables should be handled the same, although I appreciate the temptation to do this given the increased service charge they can get. Also, a few of the waiting staff were clearly wandering around aimlessly doing nothing, avoiding eye contact with their customers. A few drinks orders never arrived and they messed up the food order initially. As an aside, we struggled to hear each other at times as the restaurant / music was so loud and we were essentially shouting to each other across a small table. Either that, or we all need hearing aids. Not ideal, hence it does not get full stars for atmosphere. I would not go back, and although I would recommend it to friends it would come with the caveat to be prepared for long waits and poor service generally. Maybe the food makes it worth at least one visit. It would never get a Michelin star based on current all round service.

Never disappointed at The Victoria, regularly visited for the bar and lovely gardens but dined for the first time this weekend and wow. Will be back for sure, the food blew us away - especially the desserts.

If you are thinking of going here please don’t go. Service is terrible and we were very disappointed and dissatisfied. Table was booked to celebrate friends 50 th birthday - party of 8. We had called in advance to inform them of our dietary requirements. On the day the waiter came to our table and asked us to confirm our dietary requirements. We had 4 vegetarians - and the rest were either GF or GF and dairy free. To keep things simple the vegetarians were sat at one half of the table and the rest on the other half. We ordered bread and spread to start with. Waiter confirmed the GF bread and put it to one side . They put the normal bread and spread on my side where the vegetarians were sat. After trying it we realised something wasn’t right. The spread contained a BEEF ingredient/ dripping. Unfortunately all 4 of us who have been life long vegetarians had eaten some of it. Waiter was not phased by it at all. After that it went down hill. Food was being put in front of us but the waitress had no idea if it was GF or DF. She had to keep going to the kitchen to check. Food very bland and tasteless. I had the aubergine. Portions small. We asked to speak to the manager but she didn’t come and speak to us. Service poor, food substandard, staff had no clue what they were doing. We paid over £400 for the meal. Came away dissatisfied and disappointed. I am not sure how they have ever had any decent reviews.

Unfortunately this visit to The Bear did not go well. There were long delays, confusion over drink and food orders ....... However, when we raised our concerns the staff were good and recognised there had been a number of issues and gave us complimentary desserts and coffees

We honestly only came for a quick drink after work, and ended up staying for Dinner! Mostly because the atmosphere was so welcoming and the service from was so friendly and professional. Drinks not too unreasonably priced for the area, and the food is great. Menu has all the usual suspects done very well, and some finer numbers to (confit duck leg tempting but I went for the burger which was stacked and filling as well as tasty. My Partner had Fish n Chips which looked and tasted the part perfectly) all in all a thoroughly nice evening.

Lovely gastro pub close to Oxshott station and Woods, both ideal for a dog walk. The pub offers a friendly and inviting space but is expensive so more of a treat than a drop in for a bite to eat. The kitchen was closed when we arrived but not sure we would have stayed for a late lunch due to the prices being charged and the fact we were after a simple quick bite and a drink. Paid £17.50 for a pint, bottle of coke, bag of crisps and bowl of nuts.

Popped into the bear for some dinner with my partner and was greeted straight away and even though it was busy we were seen to as quickly as possible I must say the food was lovely, attentive staff and wonderful atmosphere many thanks to Alice as she was wonderful extremely accommodating and made our night even more lovely I had the calves liver which was cooked perfectly and seasoned very well my partner had the sirloin steak which she said was cooked exactly to her liking and delicious Compliments to the chefs who were working it was great Overall a wonderful evening We will definitely be back again Many thanks team bear Merry Christmas to you all

The evening was great and we loved the food, the service and the attention to my 16 guests. It was a special evening. Thank you in particular to Ashley, Louise and the gentleman (sorry I can’t remember the name) for looking after us very well.

Four of us chose to book at The Victoria in Oxshott for our Sunday Lunch today. We rarely go out to eat as it is such a luxury these days and our usual choice (The Onslow Arms in Clandon) was full. We arrived at 12:45 to The Victoria and while there was a fire burning, it had not matured and the restaurant was a little chilly (my wife kept her coat on for most of the meal). Our table was ready and our friends were already sitting at it. The Victoria is (self) designated as "Fine Dining in Surrey" yet there were no tablecloths - something that is sadly lacking these days and yet, makes such a difference to the feel. As it was a Sunday, traditional roasts were available although chicken (strangely) was not. Only red meats available - lamb, beef and pork (yes, pork is, as you know, a red meat). My wife therefore chose fish and chips, one of us had the pork and the remainder, the beef. However, our friends also chose a starter each - the soup and the beetroot/goats cheese mouse. The starters were enjoyed - they were certainly presented well and apparently were "very good". The mains arrived and I could see the disappointment on my wife's face when a small battered piece of fish adorned the plate, placed in front of her. While it all tasted good, it was mostly batter - the actual fish within was such that she had finished her dish before we were halfway through ours. At £26, it was rather insulting. The roasts were adequate but again, the amount of meat on our plates did not reflect the price - it absolutely does not compare to other establishments. Deserts: we all had a desert - a 'Marathon Bar, Aero, chocolate sorbet' at £15 (!!!), two of us had an unremarkable sticky toffee pudding' (£12 each but worth not much more than half that) while my wife had the 'Pineapple carpaccio' - but she lucked-out again as this was absolutely tiny! The service was adequate (for which a service charge of £30 had been added to our bill). Summary This is not fine dining although the prices suggest it is. Having said that, the food was fine - nothing special (triple cooked roast potatoes were soggy - not crunchy) but the meat itself was tasty and perfectly cooked. Absolutely overpriced for what was provided - there are so many better options available if you book in advance. Consequently, we would not return. A combined bill (including a bottle of wine) was virtually £270 - far in excess of what we should be paying for four Sunday lunches.

Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch. The food was hot, delicious and well presented. Above all, the staff are wonderful, really engaging. They very kindly dealt with a significant spillage incident with the minimum of fuss. Lovely staff , lovely pub, lovely food. All boxes ticked.

Fab place food amazing great staff

Came with some friends that we hadn’t seen in a while. It was a quiet evening but the staff were very pleasant and were attentive but not too much, which was perfect. I believe the girls name was ira and it was her first day. She did extremely well and I’m sure she will be a good addition to the other staff that work there. Juliet (I think that was her name) was on hand to help her and the barman was a delight and made sure I had the best gin and tonic. I asked what his name was on leaving after he thanked us for coming (Jack) We haven’t been to the bear in the evening for quite some time, I’ve only been lunchtime with some girlfriends. After Tuesday night we will definitely be meeting there again. Well done

The staff very friendly The food was lovely BUT the pepper in my liver was overpowering I am not a lover of pepper this made my nose and throat very sore. I also spoke with other people outside and they also said there pies were very peppery as well So maybe talk to the chef

I walked up the road with a friend to have a lunch time drink at the Bear. When we entered I was asked "had I booked a table if not you'll have to sit outside". When I mentioned that there were plenty of empty tables I was told "they will all be taken shortly". We managed to persuade the barman to allow us to sit at a small table by the wall. When we left an hour later the bar area was almost empty. As this is a pub with a large restaurant behind the bar area I was amazed at the attitude of the barman. I also wondered why the tables in the bar area were laid for food - was this to make the pub look busy? Needless to say I will not be visiting this pub again after such a welcome.

Met friends here for a light lunch, easy parking and a pleasant welcome. We had a very comfortable table for four, excellent food, drinks and service. We’ve been coming here for many years and will continue to do so, it gets better every time. Thank you

It wasn’t a bad experience either. It was almost empty on an early Sunday evening so there was zero ambiance. First of all the allergies arrangements. The book they gave us listed everything except steak as having gluten. This is a very poor effort and we almost left immediately. After a conversation with a staff member it transpired there were a few more options that could be made to be gluten free but the choices were very limited indeed especially if you don’t want a steak or burger. They are well behind the curve on making the dining experience enjoyable for those with allergies. On a positive note they added extra roast potatoes to make up for the missing bread sauce, cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire pudding from my roast dinner- though I’d have preferred extra vegetables. My husband’s seafood pie was tasty but was a small portion and was all fish except for one tiny prawn. The pate starter was not good and without the fig chutney would have been tasteless. Also, my gluten free toast was one ok slice but also a very hard piece of inedible outer crust (a heel to some). The server saw it being returned almost intact but nobody queried if it was ok. We won’t rush back.

Our waiter was excellent, couldn’t fault him, I think he was called Jack. He was very friendly and attentive but not overly, so got the right balance. My friend and I had the sourdough and tapenade to start with, this was delicious but could have been presented in a more attractive way, We had the fish pie with broccoli for mains, the portions were small and didn’t look that appealing when brought to the table. It would have been nice to see a golden, cheesy appetising topping, however, it looked quite bland with some limp broccoli on the top to cover half if it. The actual dish was quite tasty but still needed more seasoning at the table. I ordered a small glass of white wine which was served in a large wine glass so it didn’t look like much. I suppose the general theme here is presentation or slight lack of. A shame as the atmosphere in the pub is very comfortable and inviting.

Jack was an amazing server! His recommendations were spot on! I had a lovely local gin in my G&T at his suggestion and the tastiest tapenade I’ve had in ages! The soup was superb as well! All in all a fabulous visit, and I will definitely return!

Food is west end quality in a rural setting. It is nice not to have to dive to London to have a classy meal A guitarist plays on Wednesdays which adds to the professional feel I'm reluctant to post this in case I struggle to get a table when I need one here. We decided to visit this restaurant based on the promising reviews, anticipating exceptional service and delectable food. Regrettably, our experience was far from satisfying. Initially, the service was exceptionally slow. We ordered several servings of chips for the kids and requested ketchup, but the chips arrived promptly while the ketchup lagged behind, leaving us with finished chips. For our main courses, we selected the cauliflower steak and a burger. I inquired with the waiter about the cauliflower steak's quality, and he assured me it was delightful. However, upon receiving our food, I was dismayed to find a diminutive cauliflower accompanied by a meager amount of sweet corn, resulting in a bland and unsatisfying dish that resembled more of a starter than a main course. The burger was passable, but the cauliflower dish, priced at £18, was disappointing, especially when considering that the burger, at £19, came with fries, making the value for money quite unreasonable. Throughout our meal, no one inquired about our satisfaction. Despite our hunger, the experience was far from enjoyable. When we requested the bill and mentioned our disappointment, all we received was a smile and a promise to convey our feedback to the chef. We left the restaurant hungry and disheartened. Initially, we had planned to stay for coffee and desserts but ultimately decided to seek them elsewhere.

The food was really nice. But left with a bit of a bitter taste having been charged £8.50 for 2 small potions of chips! I would actually say that the amount of chips vs cost would equate to 25p a chip! And we was charged...

Service was extremely slow and not very attentive which is ironic for somewhere that is clearly trying to deliver a high-end gastro pub experience. There was food all over the floor under our table when we arrived and we had to ask for it to be cleaned after we had sat down. The portions are extremely small and quite frankly ridiculous for such an extortionate price. They’ve have done well with the decor however and they have a nice garden.

Five of us family found ourselves in The Bear for a quick light lunch . Very friendly welcome by lovely staff & excellent food . We will definitely return soon.

Lovely lunch yesterday with friends. 2 of us had the Dorset crab starter, which was nice but a little bland. However the mains - chicken ceasar salad and chicken supreme - were absolutely excellent (succulent chicken, tasty and imaginative dishes). The service was also impeccable....

The garden on a summer evening is glorious and the food is really accomplished. A few off notes for me: the service doesn’t match the food, it was slow and disorganised and got worse over time as the restaurant filled up. And a side of jersey royals was bland and huge compared to the main it was accompanying.

We visit The Bear regularly for lunch and are always impressed. The quality of the food and the team's professional service is always of a very high standard and much appreciated. Thanks to Keira for her excellent service throughout our last visit.

Seriously disappointed. Staff sitting outside in the non-smoking area and smoking/drinking while ignoring the disgusting bathrooms and dirty floors. We go to pubs for a family dinner often and it’s been a long time since I had such mediocre food, bad service and dirty environment.

Absolutely excellent, what a find! Prices are slightly on the higher side but completely worth it as the food was fantastic. Especially, the mushroom parfait, pork crackling, Sunday lunch (beef and pork), strawberry and cream dessert and black forest were all outstanding. The garden, with outside bar and comfortable seating is very pleasant as with the attentive service. A great place for a drink or for an impromptu 3 course meal on a Sunday.

Efficient and friendly service. Oysters and other snacks, mushroom parfait, sweetbreads, puddings all pretty tasty, fresh and more-ish, if a bit generic. There were issues with the mains. Pork was overdone and needed a lot of chewing, the large carrots with the duck had been charred but otherwise barely cooked, even more chewing required. My jaw got tired. Both pork and duck also a little bland which the pouring sauces did not quite compensate for. Overall if you frame it as a pub meal, it's a good experience, but if you come expecting a fine dining experience (the price and promotion are getting towards that end), then there are many holes to pick. However we did not try the beef, which they are more known for. They are in the Michelin Guide for Surrey but I can think of several more worthy Surrey establishments that aren't.

What a fabulous evening we had. Out taster menu was absolutely amazing, couple this with the best service; we really wouldn't hesitate in recommending The Victoria at Oxshott to anyone who is looking for the best food, service and ambience.

Used to be regular visitors to “The Bear” as my Mother-in-Law lives in Cobham, so it was a very convenient location for family etc We stopped going after less than average menu options, poor service, & a pretty lacklustre atmosphere. We always disliked certain areas...

Food was very good, as well as the service and the setting. The only minor drawback is that it’s priced a bit higher than one would expect.

Sat close to the bar in the leather armchairs…ladies World Cup final almost over. Sticky tables. We’re told the system was down…waited 30mn, could see the system was back on but no one remembered us…(where are the good old days of paper and pencil orders…)....

We booked for an early Sunday Lunch at midday. The beef was overcooked and the roast potatoes tasted old, not cooked fresh that morning or part cooked beforehand. The mark of a roast is freshness and the crisp potatoes! We would not return!

Visited recently for a impromptu dinner after we noticed the menu had changed. Very delicious and wanted to eat it all over again! We had gone early so wasn't busy but service was great, and they're both family and dog friendly, as well as having a lovely looking outside area and bar. Highly recommend.

Absolutely love this Contemporary Pub. Had such a relaxing enjoyable evening celebrating my Daughter’s Birthday. Grandchildren well looked after . Wonderful experience here for dinner. We started the meal in the garden as it was lovely weather and then moved inside to the stunning cosy settings. The desserts are exceptional, especially the souffle, so save room! Pictures attached
