First time visiting The Baum for many years. Pleasantly surprised. We received a warm welcome, and were seated straight away. The food menu was varied but not too long. I asked for a recommendation for a real ale and wasn't disappointed. We were given plenty of time to decide on our meal choices, without having someone hovering. The meals did take a while to arrive, but worth the wait. Excellent food, well cooked and decent portions. Will be returning soon.

I am writing this review on behalf of the 11 people who went for Christmas lunch, one of them being my wife. They had booked eight weeks ago and notified them a week ago of the meal choices as requested at the time of booking. We were assured that we would all be sat on the one table, but ended up sat on two tables with our backs to each other so that a group conversation at our Christmas lunch could not take place. We had booked the table for 12.15 and we did not expect to be still there three hours later just finishing our meal. Most of the main courses were cold or lukewarm, this was a specific Christmas menu, so we had cold turkey, warm potatoes and gravy and undercooked and cold carrots and sprouts. One person had cheese and union pie which was short on the amount of cheese but bulked out with potato, pastry was burnt and covered with mushy peas (this meal price was refunded). The hot desserts were lukewarm and the supposed chocolate and orange cheesecake resembled a chocolate brownie with separate chocolate mouse and a blob of ice cream. The people who had ordered this asked if this was the cheesecake and were told yes it was. It took 30 minutes between main course to get our desserts. Now we get to the bill, it was wrong and it took the party 30 minutes to work out the bill was incorrect, only to be told when we went to pay that we had been given the wrong drinks bill and the food bill was still £10 more than it should have been but the party gave up at that point and they put in extra money to make up the shortfall. There only seemed to be one girl serving the food and drink and preparing the bill. The male person, who they presumed was the manager, appeared once and spent most of the time they saw him carrying an I Pad. The party felt sorry for the young girl who was rushed off her feet and seemed to be inexperienced. Two of the parties husbands had a meal separate to this party of women but they had to send their meal back as the steaks they had ordered as medium had been provided as very rare, it was said by them that it must have not seen the grill for a very long period of time. This means that of the 13 people who had hoped for a lovely Christmas lunch or lunch meal, will not be returning for a meal again. It was in their opinion £200 wasted. The 11

Party of four for a late lunch. Unfortunately I ordered the burger which arrived burnt and overcooked. Why serve something that is burnt? Waitress took leftovers away without asking why I’d not eaten it as she could obviously see it was inedible. Other three in our party thought food was ok (hence the average score) but not rushing back. Such a shame as we went on reviews and recommendations.

The Baum is conveniently placed for a visit to the Pioneers Museum (next door). The real ales on offer were well kept and very reasonably priced with a discount for CAMRA members. The staff were friendly and the seating and tables well maintained and clean. The toilets were of a good standard. I did not eat here but those who did seemed to enjoy the food. The atmosphere (I visited at a lunchtime) was welcoming. It's also well placed for anyone on their way to a football match at the 'Dale'.

We've been going to the Baum for many years and have had some excellent meals. I don't know what's happened, but the last meal we had was OK and we thought we'd give them another go! Big mistake.Firstly, the menu is pretentious. What is 'arancini' bacon? I don't know but I'm sure there must be someone in Rochdale who knows. We had to ask for a menu and it took us 10 minutes to attract a waiter to take our order, despite the fact that one waiter had been talking since we arrived to his mate on the table next to us.We order one fish & chips and one salmon salad. Fortunately I ordered the fish & chips which were OK, although they had 'run out of vinegar'. The salmon in the salsd was fine, however, the boiled egg was not thoroughly boiled and running with water and best of all, it was served with raw potatoes! Yes, raw potatoes.I remember well the Baum serving good food with attentive service and this was just verey poor. Will we go again - NEVER!

We visited on Sunday. We both had the roast beef dinner. The beef was super nice and juicy. However the roast dinner overall whilst not horrible wasn't outstanding. The carrots were hard, the Yorkshire pudding was quite flat and slightly burnt. Crispy kale was nice as we're the potatoes. The portion size for the dinner is, in my opinion, quite small.Don't bother ordering dessert the portions are quite large and overfacing. I had the cheese cake which isn't really a cheese cake more like a super sweet, sickly mouse, a large cookie and some sorbet. My boyfriend had the chocolate tart which had obviously been in the fridge for a few days as the party was soggy.Staff are pleasant, service a little slow. Not terrible but won't rush back anytime soon.Of you want a really hearty tasy roast dinner try the gallows in Milnrow!

Had lunch with friends. The pub itself was quiet for a Friday afternoon, however we sat near the conservatory and it was a pleasant spot. The menu spoilt it for me- we wanted a simple lunch so that meant a choice of sandwiches, salad or a ploughman's. The ploughman's cost a eye watering £18! Mu friends opted for a salad, but I wanted a sandwich and was disappointed with the choice. There was none of the usual choices like cheese or prawn. The most simplest I could see was a posh fish finger sandwich which was haddock. It was just okay at best- it came on two smallish sourdough bread which is always harder crusts etc and was decidedly underwhelming for the price. The menu annoyed me and was pretentious with things such as smoked yoghurt and fast pickle?! I had Pickle on my sarnie which was...just a pickle. It smacked of bumping up costs by adding a few quid to dishes by pretending they are more exotic than they are. Baum you are a pub in the centre of Rochdale! Reflect this and offer normal lunchtime fayre, with more choices and please lose the ridiculous names and inflated prices!

So a huge thank you to the chef for being so accommodating!!! It was definitely worth it......the Chicken and Mushroom pie....highly recommended!!The 2 waitresses serving were lovely too, very smiley and chatty....it makes a huge difference. Upon arrival it was reassuring to see the measures taken to prevent spread of the lurgy. I’ve not seen any pubs do it badly but the Baum does it very well. We were seated well apart from surrounding tables and presented with our disposable Menus. The staff all wore masks but that didn’t take away from their friendly service. I guess it just shone through. My mum had herself the Lancashire Cheese, shallot and leak pie... apparently it’s about the best she’s ever had and comparable only to the Oxfords Cheese pie although very different in taste and texture.I had a Steak that can only be described as outstanding.Oh and the chips were outstanding.Oh and the wine was outstanding. It was just outstanding.Really happy to see the Baum still setting standards!

Haven’t been for years and fancied a change so we went in. Didn’t realise wasn’t open for another 20 minutes so we perched outside in the sun. Lovely waitress came to get us when they were ready and finished setting up. Sat in the gorgeous conservatory, looking into the garden. Our drinks order and then food promptly taken. We decided to get a few bits to share. Everything piping hot, fresh and delicious. Loved all the colours. Chips were to die for, if I wasn’t stuffed I would of ordered more! Only negative thing was sandwiches were made to be a bit too “posh”. I don’t know how else to describe but the bread used was style over substance, too “skinny”, everything fell out and couldn’t get a good grab on it. But apart from that, delicious. Scotch egg was best I’ve ever had. Will get dessert next time.

Went for lunch as a treat. Ordered a burger from specials board and one from menu. It was quiet, no more than ten people there when we turned ul. As we sat down one employee left the bar, we joked that was the chef as he was so quiet. Turns out it actually was. Ordered food, still waiting 30 minutes later. The 'chef' returns from what looks like a shopping trip in the town centre and proceeds to argue with a barmaid as she pulled him up for leaving when customers had ordered food, stating its not my fault the chef hasn't turned up. Food turned up, burger buns stone cold and the actual burger was extremely dry as if it had been stood for a while and microwaved, it turned tk mice when you used a fork to pick it up. The barmaid did all she could to try and make the situation better by getting us a drink on the house. It cost us £30 for two burgers, a shandy and a cider, I wouldn't normally grumble at this but it was poor. The menu has reduced in choice and quality since we last went. Not the Baum that I remember at all. There are still a few staff that I recognise from years gone by but the quality of the place has massively decreased. I wouldn't go for food again and would discourage anyone from eating there as a treat as it was a real let down and waste of out money.

Excellent real-ale pub listed in the CAMRA 2020 Good Beer Guide. Tricky to find as hidden off a main road and sat-nav sends you to another dis-sected part of Toad Lane. Good varied selection of 6 hand-pump ales. I chose the locally brewed Pictish Ale. The food menu was not overly extensive for a Saturday lunchtime, but I chose the sausages and mash. Decent locally sourced bangers as the butchers van drew up while I was in the pub delivering more. Not enough gravy with the sausages and mash however and no bar staff came over to check if we were happy with the meal, as many places do nowadays. The place was quiet so there was no excuse. Sloppy bar-staff. The meal ended up a little dry, but I finished it. I would return and eat there again. Church pew furniture seating on different levels, good ambience about the place, pub garden for sunny days and a nice indoor verandah too. Locals are lucky to have this pub in their area.

Apart from the Museum, this was the only other place we went into in Rochdale. Nice situation. Not sure about the tripe sign outside. But you enter into an almost bygone age. Great drinks and great food. Good service. What a find. I shall return.

Visited over a bank holiday weekend for a birthday after previous visits knowing the food was good.Menu had changed and a good number of dishes were sold out, itself disappointing. The prawn sandwich had gone which previously had been excellent on ciabatta loads of prawns great value. This has been replaced by prawn and egg on a brown or white baguette or wrap. Chose the baguette which came with nowhere near the same amount of prawns as previous. The prawns are balanced along the split and proves very difficult to pick up and eat without them dropping off.Others chose the roast brisket Sunday lunch, the meat was fine but roast spuds had skin on which clearly fails to crisp up and the Yorkshire’s were burnt and rock hard. The veg saved the dish.On the waitress collecting we mentioned the Yorkshire’s which she said would tell the chef.We had no feedback if that took place. This really is an absolute gem of a pub and I want to give it 5 stars but I can’t as the food was average and no where near on the same levels the beer and pub.Its clear that a change has taken place with the food and I hope they can focus on raising the standard to match the pub.

We've eaten and drank here a fair few times and we're both great cooks so sometimes it's hit and miss food wise - but to be fair mostly *hit*.

We eat out often. Found this charming little pub by accident whilst out of our usual area. Can honestly say the beef is prob best have had. Lean thick but so tender it falls to bits. Would recommend. Staff pleasant too.

This real ale pub is probably the best in Rochdale centre with a wide variety of real ales and specialty beers from around Europe. The food is excellent especially the choice of three starters for£12.50.

My family and got together at the week-end and had lunch at The Baum. It was a lovely afternoon so we took advantage of the beer garden and ate outside. We all seemed to chose different meals so had a good choice of what was to offer on the menu.We all agreed how good the food was , plenty of it and very reasonably priced. Will certainly be going back for more.Well done.

Came here with friends for some tea. Service was good. Quirky little pub with a nice beer garden. Food was good. Shame about it though was that for all the effort they seemed to put into the food they use the cheap frozen chips you get everywhere! I had chilli chips and could of been much better had they done fresh chips. Still nice food though. My other 2 friends had the tapas dishes which looked nice too.

Went for lunch with a friend and we both ordered the hot beef sandwich. We expected it to be slices of beef in gravy but it was ‘pulled’ beef in a really thick gravy. It was not so nice. Overall would go again but would try something different

Popped in here for some lunch prior to the football and was pleasantly surprised by this place after walking the local streets trying to find somewhere decent. Nice décor & atmosphere with an excellent range of beers plus a good food menu with various options including the usual pub meals, sandwiches, baked potatoes, tapas and some specials. Quality was very good and I would certainly use again if ever visiting Rochdale in the future. It says something about the place when a lot of the tables were booked even on a Saturday lunchtime.

There are all kinds of beers on tap, and impressive offering of bottled beers from France, Belgium, Germany, UK, Scottland. Service is friendly and the location is perfect. A gem of a bar in Rochsdale. We only ordered starters, and Humas fries, Chicken and Lime, and King prawns, all were delicious and washed down with the Pedigree Amber Ale in a minute.

I have visited The Baum a few times for a drink and have always been content with the service and atmosphere. This is the first time I have eaten, but must ensure it isn't the last. The food was really good and quite reasonably priced. They were also running a separate gin bar, which was also worth a look. A nice evening, well looked after.

Been a few times but the most recent was with my elderly father and was a midweek lunchtime visit. The Amstel lager was good and I enjoyed a hand pumped Pale Ale, it was excellent. I'm going to mention the traditional Pork Pie which they sell at two pounds each, excellent taste and value for money if you don't fancy a meal. A lot to like about the Baum and the Staff are always very helpful. When drinking in Rochdale this pub is a 'must not miss'.

Arrived here after a recommendation from a friend who used live here. He recommended it based upon the real ale. However, after some MTB riding, some food was in order! As veggies, the choice was still great and a combination of the light bites of cheese and spring onion potato skins with grilled hallumi was excellent. Mind you, the best was the exceptionally light onion rings with garlic and chive mayo. I've not mentioned the beer - of which the choice was extensive. Throughly recommended.

We both chose a ciabatta roll, mine prawn, his chicken and chorizo melt. Both with a portion of chips with tasty garlic mayo! Sitting in the conservatory in the spring sunshine and overlooking a well kept and spacious beer garden was a delight.Great selection of beers for the followers of real ale.Service was polite and efficient. We will be back to sample the beer garden in the summer!Worth a visit
