Very poor. Seasonal pasty very ordinary. Overpriced. Chips far too salty. But the service from the male kid serving was atrocious, surly, disinterested. Not welcomed at all. Used many times in the distant past, hoped be good after reopening. No. It’s hard enough surviving in this business but need to make people welcome all the time. I own two restaurants. Then to have 10% service added “which you can take off if you want” yes I did want. 1st time ever!

We stayed in the Bateman Arms for 3 nights in mid November 2024. The pub was nice, the food excellent, we really couldn't fault the food. However, a word of warning. The bedroom was absolutely freezing. We found out after complaining, that the heating had packed in. There was no independent heater in the room, until we complained. We were given a fan heater, which was very small and really noisey and obviously the room got cold again very quickly when it was turned off. There was a whiteboard behind the bar of jobs to be done. One of them was to sort out the heating BUT it had practically been worn off, so we are guessing this has been a long term issue that hasn't been fixed. We ended up buying some hot water bottles. We did complain at the time but the manager didn't really see the problem. The pub itself wasnt warm, although the fire was ready to be lit it was never done. I also completed the online review from the Bateman Arms but have received no response, hence my review here. It really spoiled our much needed break away.

Me and a friend got stuck in the recent floods trying to make our way to Hereford and the staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful! We were unsure if we could continue and they offered to block a room for us and gave us advice on which routes we could take. When we decided to stay we had great food and the room was incredibly clean. Would definitely recommend!

What a fantastic pub. The food is amazing and accommodation great. I was travelling on my own for my dog to have eye surgery and was warmly welcomed and looked after. The service was over and above. I got back late after surgery complications and ordered food which was kindly brought to my room rather than me collecting from the pub as U was exhausted. 2 breakfasts and 2 evening meals and all was top class. Beautiful architecture too.

Tried the Sunday lunch for the first time , quite a nippy day outside but lovely and warm in the restaurant. Nice atmosphere, plenty of staff. Had roast beef, plenty of veggies and roast potatoes, ordered cauliflower cheese as an extra for two people, it was delicious, and one portion would have been plenty for two people . Had apple and blackberry crumble with custard for pudding, it was superb, proper crumble ! Will definitely be trying their midweek specials

My Dad and I dropped in on a bank holiday Monday at 12pm. We had been walking in the area and fancied lunch. It was light and airy and clean. We ordered a rump steak, Stilton ciabatta and a buttermilk fried chicken with waffles, bacon and maple syrup. The food was so fresh, perfectly cooked, and absolutely delicious. I’d highly recommend eating here.

Make sure you are hungry before you eat at this friendly pub - the portions are gargantuan! The staff are lovely and friendly. Atmosphere very relaxed. The food is very good - we just couldn’t eat it all !! There was an issue with my starter but there was absolutely no problem sorting it out - the chef, who is the owner, came out to see us and couldn’t have been more lovely, helpful and apologetic. Great service.

Visited here some time ago and it was great. A recent visit was disappointing to say the least. Beef stroganoff was really poor. Steak was dry and tough. Hardly any sauce. Stroganoff requires a good quality meat or it needs braising for a few hours to tenderise. Poorly presented with very raw vegetables. When I complained, I was told oh dear, sorry about that. Laughing.. Website says any complaints and that course is refunded. Nope!!! Best give this a miss till chef gets act together. I can send a recipe if he wishes. Good Food mag has a good one, and plenty of illustrations on the web.

I don't like writing poor reviews but when there is a concern that places have a cavalier attitude to food allergies, one has to. We came for lunch and all chose the steak sandwich. There was no mention of a salad or garnish with it so we ordered a side salad [Lane Cottage Organic salad with 24 month Parmigiana Reggiano] and two lots of Rainbow slaw. When the sandwiches arrived [they were cold. Perhaps they were meant to be but there was a whiff of a suggestion that they might have been standing on the side, waiting for the chips. I had asked for my steak to be well-cooked. It wasn't] we realised that there was a garnish with them and therefore hadn't needed the side dishes. Let's deal with the 'Rainbow slaw' first. Certainly the pot was full of well shredded vegetables [cabbage, onion etc] but it had been coated in something very salty and oily. One of our group said it was so unappetising that it was inedible. We complained to the waitress and asked her to find out what it was coated in. After quite some time [we had finished and she had come to take the plates away] she returned saying that the chef had no idea what the coating was, s/he hadn't prepared the slaw but we wouldn't be charged for it. Notwithstanding, it was rather alarming to hear that the chef didn't know what his dishes contained. Onto the side salad. My understanding is that 'Parmigiana Reggiano' is cheese. There wasn't even a hint of cheese of any description in this salad ...... but there were olives and candied walnuts. Apparently, Italians always add candied walnuts to their salads we were told. Really?? Obviously no one has a nut allergy in Italy and fortunately none of our group does, but what if they had have done? Why would anyone assume that a green salad would contain walnuts if those aren't mentioned in the description of the dish? In our opinion, being candied the walnuts didn't add anything to the green salad. But this is why I have added 'alarming' to the title of this review. Nuts were served, unannounced, in a dish to a customer who would have found out the hard way if they had a nut allergy. And we were served a coleslaw with an unpleasant dressing over it that could have contained anything. And worse, no one on the staff knows what is in it!! I have been told that the Bateman is now owned and run by the Riverside Inn at Aymestrey. This is interesting if so as the one and only time we have been to the Riverside we encountered a similar cavalier experience to food allergies when, despite me having warned the restaurant at the time of booking of my seafood allergy, it wasn't noted by the waiting staff who also were not able to reassure me what ingredients were in the dishes. I was going to write a truthful review of our experience at the time but the restaurant asked me not to. We will not be returning due to a total lack of trust in these establishments, but if you are bent on going to the Bateman Arms or the Riverside, I would urge you, if you have any form of food allergy or dislike, to ask extremely careful questions of the ingredients of the dishes on the menu as our experience is of inaccurate descriptions of the food and a shocking ignorance by the staff of what the dishes actually contain.

This was the local pub to the campsite we were staying, first impressions it looked closed we walked all round the pub then started trying doors a sign maybe good! On entry it seemed very spacious the bar was to the left, staff were very friendly reminding us about the covid restrictions all drinks were brought to our table. The pub had a good selection of ales and spirits. The bar area was very well laid out and still felt very welcoming and warm. We were thinking about something to eat and we’re provided with a menu, we were looking for some light sandwiches but it seemed to be main meals the choice looked really good. Overall we returned a couple of times for drinks, very reasonably priced and the staff were so friendly which was lovely. The pub seems to be dog friendly as well, although this could be the bar area only, not 100% sure. Will definitely return again when next down and dine out as well.

We stayed at the Bateman arms a couple of weeks ago for a last minute 2 night break to explore the area. We stayed in their rooms which are comfortable and good value. Spent one day on a leisurely cycle round the black & white villages and the next at Croft Castle (highly recommended). Both nights we ate in the Bateman arms and the food and presentation were truly outstanding. Quite unexpected and a well kept secret. The first night I had the pork wellington and my wife the sea trout. On the second night we both had the rare breeds steak. In all cases we couldnt fault it. The chef certainly knows his trade. And on top of that it was all very reasonably priced and Covid precautions sensibly followed. The attention even extended to the breakfasts which used good local incredients and were delicious and well presented. I certainly hope they succeed (but not too popular that we can't get in again :).

We ate on a Friday evening - Covid 19 restrictions were well organised but there was still a nice bustling atmosphere in the main areas. We were in the over spill dining room - which was a little quieter and a bit chilly on a very very windy August day. However, food was very good - my husband particularly enjoyed his pork wellington. (Chips and crushed potatoes didn't have much flavour - getting good quality potatoes seems to be increasingly difficult.)Foodies will enjoy, but one minor warning - the wine list if very limited.

We were staying nearby and our holiday let owners recommended The Bateman Arms for dinner but we weren't too sure after looking at the photos on TripAdvisor as the pub looked a little tired. How wrong we were, as the pub must be undergoing a refurb as the dining area was nicely lit with cosy areas to sit. We sat in a wooden pugh next to the fire. There is also a new logo for the pub which looks classy. Our food was so, so nice! I pass this pub every other weekend when collecting and dropping off my daughter, at the end of August I decided to pop in with my daughter for lunch to break our journey up; we entered via a back door and wandered into a small room, it was very quiet with just one other table in use but that was fine. If we'd have gone up the steps in front of us when entering, past the toilets, I think we'd have got into what I assume is the bigger bar room. The lunch time menu didn't have much choice, my daughter had mini fish & chips which was ok and I had a lamb sandwich with chips which again was ok, nothing amazing, equally nothing wrong with it but was quite expensive for what it was. Has car parking space and a decent sized garden at the back to sit out in, there was a tiny tots piece of play equipment but it really is for small toddlers, too small for my 4 year old. Overall wouldn't really entice me back in, we pass a few pubs so I'd try a different one next time.

This changed ownership earlier this year, but sadly not for the best. A recent Sunday lunch disappointed all of us. The chicken pate was sloppy and the bread very ordinary. The Hereford beef - if you like your roast at all pink, forget it! It was all well done. I was lucky with the pork but get your "rich meat gravy" served separately in a jug! The cauliflower in a light sauce was NOT improved by having the gravy carelessly poured over the whole plate. A larger plate would have made it all look less messy also.

Perhaps we were unlucky on the day but we may not chance going back. My wife and I had enjoyed weekend lunches at the Bateman Arms in the past. We new the management had changed but expected the same standards. Unfortunately, last Sunday we took friends there for lunch, ordering two roast meals for the men , something called a smoked haddock gratin for my wife and also requested a reduced size portion of savoury quiche with a few salad leaves, rather than the full menu option of new potatoes and vegetables for the other lady who is unable to eat full size meals. This was acknowledged and agreed by the member of staff taking our order. The meals were duly served but almost immediatelyt my wife had to call a waitress over to tell her that her fish dish was cold. The plate was taken away and the meal was reheated and returned. My roast turkey dinner was very disappointing and didn't taste freshly prepared. My wife commented that she couldn't actually find any fish in the gratin dish. I made suitable comments and on leaving I was told that a reduction of £6.50 was being made . At that point I settled the bill . However on meeting tour friends outside the lady who had ordered the reduced measure of food asked to see the bill and was annoyed to see that the full menu price had been charged. Not one for being sold short she immediately returned to the bar and insisted on a suitable refund, which was paid over.

When we saw the website for this beautiful inn & realised it was only a 1m walk from our holiday cottage we couldn't wait to get down there & sample the food & atmosphere. Sadly it didn't live up to expectations on the atmosphere front so we decided not to eat after all. Walked in through the public bar to loud music, the One Show on a big screen & darts, so it's really a pub for the locals, who are all friendly enough, but not what we were expecting for an eaterie unfortunately. The beer was good (HPA) & the food looked nice enough. There's some serious competition locally so with a little money spent on updating the interior this place could easily compete, & the locals would still have a great place to meet up.

Two Saturday lunches here in February & March and it’s now firmly on the pub crawl list. Both times the food has been fantastic, not a long wait, pub not too busy and a great selection of ciders and ales. Friendly and attentive service. There’s a good choice of dishes on the menu and the pub is spacious and comfortable. After becoming disappointed with two of our regular pub stops (no menu change in nearly four years, which gets tiring if you visit twice monthly), it’s refreshing to find a new eatery with quality meals. North Herefordshire has lost many of its good pubs over the past few years, but the Bateman is clearly a reliable and enjoyable place to visit.

No fancy touches like biscuits or toiletries for the higher prices they charge. Owners were there but didn’t communicate but bar staff OK.

One word to describe the Bateman is ‘fantastic’. A warm and friendly environment where everyone is made welcome. I have been several times and never been disappointed with the meal. Always hot very tasty and the chips are to die for. The staff are lovely nothing is too much trouble their focus being on customer satisfaction. Well done your hard work shows. I highly recommend the Bateman Arms.

We live in the village therefore on occasions we go for Sunday dinner. It never fails us, the quality and portion size is brilliant value for money along with a warm welcoming atmosphere from the staff. Up there with the better Sunday dinners.

We visited The Bateman Arms after walking the Shobdon Loop this morning. We were lucky that today the £8 lunch special was being served. My husband ordered she steak and I had the chicken and bacon pie. The food was beautifully cooked and presented and the service was excellent. We will definitely return when we next visit this beautiful area.

My partner and I recently moved to Shobdon and have visited the Bateman for food a couple of times, both visits we have been absolutely blown away by the service, quality of food/wine and value for money. We are so lucky to have such a perfect pub on our doorstep and I have dreams about the Brie starter!! Can’t wait to return very soon, thank you to all the staff of the Bateman for making us feel so welcome.

Visited The Bateman for a quiet drink on a Saturday night after being told about the pub, but felt as though we were in a different pub,we felt totally ignored when we went in we weren't welcomed and it was as if it was an effort to serve us and it wasn't particularly busy..

We arrived hoping to eat from the a la Carte menu only to find that this is only served on certain days. We therefore had pub fare which was fine if that is what we wanted but sadly it was not. We will be more careful next time and perhaps the a la carte is very good.

Super friendly staff and delicious food. We arrived Saturday and went to enquire about booking for Sunday lunch, although the restaurant was fully booked they managed to get us a table in the bar with no time restriction to be out by.

First visit, staff excellent with their meet and greet that made us feel very welcome. Chose to sit in the lounge/restaurant area which was exceptionally clean and inviting. Prompt service with the drinks order. Menu on offer was extensive, with variety of choice and price range. Opted for the daily special menu. My partner had a steak that was cooked to perfection and presented well and barely needed the use of the knife to cut it through due to the tenderness of the cut. I chose the chicken and bacon pie that was crammed full of chicken, light on the bacon (which was my preference) The food was piping hot and very tasty. Deserts were to "die for" again well presented, and a good portion without being "over the top" The barman had a good sense of humour and could hold intelligent conversation. We will certainly return

It is really pleasing to be able to say that the Sunday Lunch here continues to meet the very high standards we have become used to at this restaurant. Beautiful pink beef (as ordered) and the bountiful supply of vegetables are still cooked just as they should be with a little "al dente" to them. The beetroot was a new and delicious addition since we last came. I must also very much recommend the mushrooms in cream starter - generous and quite yummy!

We were staying quite close to here so popped in for an evening meal. We did book, just to be sure, and it actually did seem relatively busy for a Monday evening (they stopped serving food about 8ish that night). The food was lovely - really decent portions of both the main and dessert. Each were well cooked and seemed good value for a 3 course pub meal.

Booked a table to celebrate my birthday on a friend's recommendation and we had a lovely meal. Food was excellent - I had stuffed pan-fried chicken and my husband had the pie. Both meals were well presented and really tasty. My sticky toffee pudding as dessert did not disappoint but have to say I was spoilt for choice on the desserts. Wide range of reasonably priced food to choose from served with a smile. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating. This was our first visit but I will say I hope to visit again really soon. The place itself was full of character and the toilets clean and bright.

We are trying to find new places to eat in & around Leominster & visited this hostelry for the first time very recently & were not dissapointed. There is plenty of parking space, the pub itself is quite spacious with plenty of room for the diners. The landlord is a very friendly chap & has a good knowledge of the village & surrounding area. They had a good & varied menu which should suite all tastes & a nice children's menu. We both opted for steak & that was cooked to perfection with all the trimmings. This was a great eating experience & we will definitely be going there again.

We chose a garden table due good weather, sensible choice as the view over local countryside is superb. Staff were attentive and oh so helpful. great service all round. The menu is varied and the food served was 'oh so tasty'. As it was a Sunday the menu included traditional roast meats with all the veg. Two of our party chose roast beef with all the trimmings, two decided on a roast beef sandwich. Both were perfect choices and highly recommended. So pleased we have found this gem and will return asap.

We visited a few years ago, just after the present owners had arrived. Our meal at that time only rated 3 stars. They have now really got their act together and our meal experience was faultless. Good bar, with well kept beer, friendly service and some roast beef to die for! Keep up the good work.

We had been staying down the road and on Sunday following the snowfall decided to walk to the Bateman Arms to see whether they could fit us in for Sunday lunch. They couldn't have been more welcoming. So very warm and friendly, we really wished it was our local!! The atmosphere was lovely and they fitted us in without any qualms whatsoever. The food was absolutely fantastic, arrived hot, without a long wait and was delicious. We hope to visit the area again in the future and will be putting the Bateman Arms right at the top of the to do list!

Rude, extremely disappointing, shocking and disrespectful staff! We arrived after making a booking the day before. I booked 2 Adults, 1 child aged 2. The booking itself was pleasant. We got slightly lost, rang in and again very pleasant. Arrived 7 minutes late and walked into a very ‘local’ pub feel. All eyes on us. We were told by the bar person that they were glad we found them. A woman appeared and looked at my Grandson and commented ‘we don’t have highchairs’ I commented that I’d booked ahead with a child on the booking? She said she would go down in the cellar and dust something suitable to bring up then asked me if I had a chair in my car???!!!! We approached the bar and I said I was confused as I’d booked a child ahead of coming. I was ignored, I said once again and the younger woman behind the bar looked at me and in a slightly raised voice utttered ‘well, yes she’s gone to get you something hasn’t she!!’ Based on this experience I told my Friend we were leaving as being treated like this was way beyond acceptable. I wasn’t happy and I let it be known! My Friend and I were left shocked and felt we had been treated appallingly by 2 extremely rude women. Whilst we were putting my Grandson in the car the older women came out and further patronised us with her offering of a dusted off cellar chair and we told her that her colleague was vile and it had gone beyond the chair. She walked off. Having read through the reviews I can see hands have changed and so this may be why I didn’t receive the reputation I had heard of. I have the feeling they felt they were above us! I’m not easily impressed so their Morgan cars and gold large Baroque chairs only further deepens my suspicions that they think they’re better 🤣🤣
