It's a long time since an evening meal was on offer here, hence the change of review. Current offerings are not really up to writing home about, service is ok when you can get the staff's attention, it's more like 'here's one we prepared earlier' than 'here's something just for you'. Disappointing.

Cosy modern Scandi restaurant in a delightful location overlooking castle moat. Very comfortable wooden Windsor chair. Experience marred by the scruffy paper menu, extremely slow service from uninterested staff, small portion for the salad (more like a starter in size), and poor lunch choices (1x soup, 1x salad, and bog-standard sarnies). Outdoor area could do with a weed.

Popped in for breakfast this morning, expecting great things for such an establishment. No greeting on arrival, literally four waitresses saw us and not even any eye contact. However. we sat ourselves down and ordered poached eggs on toast, granola and sourdough toast with preserves. My wife’s poached eggs were hard boiled and her toast not buttered. No cutlery was given for my granola until asked, and my sourdough toast came as thin white sliced with no preserves! The pot of tea was very nice and the butter for my toast was salted and tasty. Maybe they had an off day but it’s a shame as it’s a very nice place to sit in on a rainy day. No one asked how the food was when we paid so we couldn’t be bothered to complain.

Beautiful place to have a relaxing breakfast in Hereford. Whilst on a visit to Hereford I found a superb place to have breakfast that doesn’t cost the earth. The hotel is centrally located a stones throw from Herefords Cathedral. The building is a beautiful period style hotel. They welcome non residents and are dog friendly. Breakfast choice was good including vegetarian options. Staff were welcoming and friendly. I selected Full Hereford Breakfast £13.95. Wonderfully presented and included some tasty sausages, black pudding and vine tomatoes. Eggs were poached to perfection.

This occasion was to celebrate two birthdays for High Tea. Sadly the occasion was not acknowledged by staff although we wrote to tell them twice. The food was quite delicious when it came then when we were finished the staff asked us if we would like our scones with cream and jam? Better late than never but not well orchestrated. Despite the lack of attentive staff we did enjoy ourselves very much and appreciated the food prepared. The two cake stands had slightly different top layers which was a bit confusing and caused negotiations which we shouldn’t have had to do. 5*s would’ve been awarded without those small annoyances. Apart from that we recommend going there for afternoon tea of any description

Starters of mackerel and pork belly were delicious, and the mains, of catch of the day bream, chicken, and fillet steak were all cooked and presented perfectly and tasted equally as good. All this was followed by a selection of tasty puddings . Staff were great, wine and drinks excellent , and so for us, it was a real 5 star experience. I had lunch with friends here, i notified them a WEEK in advance that i was lactose free, could they make sure there is desserts etc. That i can enjoy on the day. Despite all this , not a single thing had been done to accommodate me according to staff they don't cater for allergies, not even dairy free ice cream!!! In this day and age this is shocking for an establishment as this, just as well i wasn't staying there, then i would have been doubly disappointed!!! As always this is a superb venue. Crisp white table cloths and napkins. I hate those paper things!! My friends had the smoked salmon egg and hollondaise on English muffin; looked and am told tasted wonderful. My Quiche of the day was quite frankly a travesty of poor cuisine. It was a square cut out of what appeared to be a school luncheon dining tray. Sloppy, tasteless and I presume microwaved as the pastry base was soggy and like wallpaper paste. The service in the main was very good although I had to go searching for a waitress when the mayonnaise I had asked for the few leaves was not forthcoming. Sadly let down. The desserts and my generous cheese board selection could not be faulted. If quiche is offered it has to be good and look good! This was not!

This restaurant used to be the 'gold standard' as far as Hereford is concerned. I have eaten there numerous times over fifteen years and always used to recommend it to friends, family and visitors. The last three times I have been there, however, have all disappointed. On all three occasions, large, noisy parties dominated the dining room and the over-worked waiter had difficulty coping. At one time, several staff would bring everyone's meal at the same time and know who had ordered what. This is no longer the case. The building of the new dining room has made the lounge dark and gloomy (candles lit even at lunchtime because it is now so dark). The food, which used to be excellent, is now unimaginative and not particularly well cooked - greasy, lukewarm potatoes, for example. This is a place that seems to have 'lost the plot' and no longer merits the high prices. One no longer gets what one pays for - a quiet, comfortable ambience, attentive service and delicious food. I wrote to the manager but received absolutely no response, not even an acknowledgement.

We stayed here a few years ago and enjoyed the food. This year, my wife decided to take me back for a birthday meal. It’s a shortish menu, and you need to read it well to see what is really on offer, as a lot of the ingredients are included in the small print - and there are generally quite a lot of ingredients that make a major difference to the overall meal. I started with the crab: this was three small piles of white crab meat with apple with various other bits and pieces, including a paprika crumb. This was the only thing that almost lost a star for the chef: the crumb is very crunchy, and there was a piece of crab shell in the dish. I crunched down, thinking it was the crumb, and almost broke my tooth. I then had the venison: a beautifully cooked fillet with a venison and black currant meat ball with spinach and other things. Again, very minor gripe: there were a few too many seeds in the meat ball - maybe just using the juice would be a better idea? Other than that, it was truly wonderful. I finished off with a latte panna cotta with coffee ice cream. The wine list is extensive and good. An hors d’ouevre and a finishing petit fours was also provided. Service was efficient and friendly. All told, excellent.

This was a surprise birthday present. After we where told there was no table ready and we could choose where to sit, either in the restaurant (which still had empty plates that had not been cleaned away or the lounge).I had to ask the young lady to repeat herself as she spoke far too fast for either of us to hear her. It was embarrassing. We where told that our scones would arrive shortly but never did. Was only asked if we wanted more tea after the table of 4 asked for more. I had to ask for some hot water. The staff where too bust chit chatting to each other rather than seeing if the customers wanted anything. We had to ask for our scones and if they could be boxed up as we had to leave. We had been there over two hours and was still waiting. When we got the box we where told “you can’t have cream and jam”It spoilt the whole event, we had come down from Yorkshire for the weekend. My husband didn’t get value for his money when he booked this.Yes I have had an email from a manager but I think it’s only right to share this information.

My mother turned 70, so we decided to surprise her with a few friends, and an afternoon tea. I’ve got to say, firstly, the service was outstanding. Friendly, polite, and extremely welcoming. I’d arranged for a birthday cake to be delivered, and the waiter, who’s name I missed, bought it out, candles lit, and belting out his rendition of happy birthday! Now for the good bit, the tea itself. Wow...just wow! Finger sandwiches, homemade scones and other little cakes. What an absolute taste sensation And really reasonably priced! We were directed there after enquiring where is a good place to eat ?; it did not disappoint !. An enthusiastic welcome, a table overlooking the river/garden in a charming room, a short but interesting menu, nicely presented dishes with subtle flavours. Then I was rudely told by a female waitress tha the restaurant was full when it was not. Only when I brought up my displeasure to the manager was I served with Roast Beef and cider. The arrogant staff think that because they work for a hotel that has some reputation (undeserved in my opinion) they can be stuck up and hoity toity to people. As a tourist who is not white, there may also be an element of racism? As Dr. Michael Lim The Travelling Gourmet a renowned international Travel, Food and Wine writer/editor, I know bad service when I experience it. On a hot August afternoon, the atmosphere of the Castle House restaurant was refreshingly cool. The staff were attentive and accommodating; the food was tasty and visually appealing, if not quite at the level of fine dining. The one anomaly in service was the disappearing mineral water; we ordered a couple of bottles at the beginning of the meal, a little bit was poured out, then the bottles disappeared, to re-emerge near the end of the meal in an ice bucket lurking behind a pillar.

Although I only work around the corner, I was unaware of this hotel. Two of our daughters bought us a voucher for Christmas and we used it this evening towards a celebration meal. I booked a week ago and checked that they could cater for vegans (me- my husband is, very much a carnivore). I was delighted to be presented with a vegan menu with choices for each course - believe me this is rare. Both of our meals were absolutely delicious, the service was great and the setting was charming. We will definitely be going back. My only disappointment was that the pudding that I was looking forward to was withdrawn by the chef as he was unhappy with it. Hopefully I will get to try it again. While we were there, the four people on the next table were having the ‘taster menu’ which looked very interesting and the waiter was knowledgeable about the local wines that were being served with each course.

Stayed 3 nights in Room 1 - the disabled suite (not because we were disabled rather because it was a larger suite with a sitting room). Unfortunately there was an air conditioning unit outside the sitting room which was noisy particularly when we opened the windows. The bedroom was behind the sitting room (there was no separating door, just a partial wall) and outside this bedroom was a duct which I think formed part of the kitchen exhaust system. It was noisy but thankfully was turned off at 10.30 to 11pm but started again at about 6am. Hotel is very well positioned near the cathedral and within a few minutes of the town centre. Hotel had a car park. Tip - we made the mistake of parking under a tree. The car was covered in bird "mess". Try and find a spot which isn't under a tree. Reception staff helpful and informative. Had dinner at hotel restaurant which was a lovely meal and reasonably priced. The breakfast which was a combination of self serve cereals, yogurt, pastries, etc and ordering off a menu. Breakfasts were excellent and the breakfast staff were fantastic. Room tip - If you are sensitive to noise, I wouldn't stay in room 1 due to the mechanical noise but people with disabilities don't have any choice which I think is a little unfair.

Family occasion which was given added value by the accommodation, the staff and the food. Small details matter and the attention to this from the complimentary fresh fruit in the rooms to the complimentary water, to the marmalades on the breakfast table made this a very good stay for a week-end. Central location helps and the car park is very close by.

Dinner for 4. Clueless staff who left us unattended for long spells with only 3 other couples dining. Took half an hour to get water and wine plus take our order. Waiters' style best suited to a cafeteria - they need training and supervision. Waitress twice almost knocked wine glasses over. Poor courtesy skills and no understanding of how to show menues, serve/clear stuff or serve drinks - lots of reaching across, serving some but not all etc. Had to call to get their attention. Really poor - cack handed, ibattentive and lacking any finness.Starter dishes very meagre. Three of us had really inadequate dish - billed as langoustines etc and a dubiously flavoured brownish (burnt?) sauce. Main courses were actually very good - such a relief - but virtually no vegetables. Why do restaurants like this think they should charge £22 for a main course plus £3 extra for each vegetable? Totally annoying.Overall, a just passable but way overpriced dinner with poor service. I will stay clear of this place in future.Give me my favourite French restaurant - 6 really good courses with bread, water, wine and excellent service for 18 euros, plus super staff, any day. I really cannot abide the expensive, poor treatment we are so often expected to tolerate here.

We attended a small wedding of 30 guests. Tasteful, elegant and self-assured surroundings. Attentive and well-trained staff throughout the day. First class lunch. This is a top-notch venue. We'll go back on our own and add this place to the small number of very classy places we escape to when the children are all despatched and elsewhere. Excellent. Well done Castle House.

Even if you are not staying here, do come to the restaurant. Fantastic locally-sourced ingredients cooked and served to perfection. Also a very good wine list, with some lovely local wines.

We stayed in the hotel and dined in, without any knowledge of their restaurant other than the excellent Trip Advisor recommendation. We were definitely not disappointed. Starting in the cosy cocktail bar, the service was perfect, and the wine list broad and interesting. Our langoustine starter with pickled mushrooms, asparagus and quails eggs was quite beautiful and both the lamb chops and sea bream dishes were equally presented and a delight. The chef here must be the best in town!

We have been visiting the restaurant at the Castle Hotel since we moved to the area four months ago. Each time we go to Hereford we lunch there. I have to say I am surprised at the last few reviews. We have always had good service, very pleasant people from when you walk in at reception. The staff have always been efficient and friendly. We love the dining room looking out onto the garden and the water. It is not very often you get white table napkins and hot plates. As for the food we have always found it excellent. Yesterday we had pork filet with herb gnocchi and a lovely creme brulee. Nothing to complain about at all.

My first visit to Castle House. The initial impression was of a well presented and well managed establishment. The staff were welcoming and smartly turned out. The menu choices reflected attention to detail and local sourcing of ingredients.Service was obliging and attentive. The dining room was immaculate. The food was extremely good and the portions were ample, even without additional side dishes.Behind the scenes, the lavatories, which are the Achille's Heel of many otherwise good restaurants, were immaculate and well stocked with quality toiletries. This was a strong indicator of good management and customer care. The cost was very reasonable at £100.00 for three people for such an enjoyable experience. I much regret that Castle House is a long way from my home or I would be a frequent visitor.

We reserved a table in advance for afternoon tea, the waitresses were uninterested when we arrived. We asked if we could move outside as it was such a lovely day. Having sat outside for ten minutes with no one serving we went back in to our reserved table. The cream served with the scone was over whipped and rock hard. We sent it back, it returned exactly the same as it went. The waitress stated that it was the fault of the supplier who had recently been supplying a poor standard of cream. Both waitresses seemed unaware that they should not serve substandard food.We complained again that it was in edible. They took the cream away and whipped some double cream into it and returned with two large bowls of cream which were inappropriately large but tasty. This should have been done the first time the cream was taken away. It seems a small point to complain over but the Castle House used to be the premier place to have afternoon tea in Hereford. The staff who served us yesterday did not appear to be well trained. Disappointing.

The Castle House used to be so good years ago, but having made three visits over the past year, it now has some major faults. My supper visit in February was pre-booked, with the receptionist being rather curt on the phone - it sounded like too much trouble to take my booking as she huffed and sighed away. My lunch visit in March was equally as uninspiring, with a bland menu and limited drinks selection. You can order sandwiches, but if a sliver of smoked salmon between two slices of buttered bread, a tiny amount of dry salad and five crisps sounds unappetising, I wouldn't bother. Lots of young staff who have had no customer service training and would be better suited to a fast food restaurant. I shan't return for a year now, in the hope that it will improve again and regain its former qualities.

We were staying in the hotel and so it was convenient to eat in the restaurant. However walking about the town we were unable to find any other place that might have been comparable. A couple of other places were closed which was surprising as it was mid week. The menu provides a reasonable choice and food presentation was excellent.

This hotel restaurant is ideal for lunch while out shopping, or a meeting place for friends. A lovely area in a quiet little back water near the catherdral and a few minutes from the town centre. Very attractive dining room with white tablecloths, relaxing atmosphere. The staff were fine and the food very good. A two course lunch from the menu of the day, fish cake for starter and calves liver, was £18. I just had a main couse of excellent pork tenderloin which was £17. With two glasses of wine and a bottle of mineral water the bill came to £58.25.

The Castle House is a beautifully located hotel in the lovely city of Hereford. It's a short walk from the cathedral and the old part of the town. I live locally and having a friend to visit, thought we'd book an afternoon tea at the hotel as a treat. What a disappointment. The price isn't cheap for the area (£15 per person), so I was expecting a groaning board, but the offer is mean in the extreme. The selection of teas is good. There was a variety of sandwiches and there were quite a few of them, but what do you go to afternoon tea for? Cake, of course and there is very little of it. Our cake stand consisted of 2 very small scones each served with cream and jam (1 large scone would have been better), a sliver of chocolate brownie and a minuscule cupcake. There was no fruitcake at all - an afternoon tea staple if you ask me. The scones were quite doughy, and although the brownie and cupcake were nice, there was just too little of them for the price. As it was a treat, we opted for a glass of prosecco, which at £6/glass seemed somewhat over priced for a small, provincial hotel too. I've paid less for much better afternoon teas in grand hotels in large cities and small village tea rooms. The price should be halved. There are some wonderful tea rooms throughout the city and county. For better value, try one of those instead.

The quality of the carvery was excellent and the chef serving was lovely. Pub has a very traditional country pub feel, which we loved.
