Had a splendid Sunday roast here last week. The scotch egg “dippy egg” starter was fantastic, roast beef delicious and the sticky toffee pudding was one of the best I’ve had. What’s more it was a bargain! Would highly recommend.

We went to the Barley Sheaf for a Sunday lunch to finish off a lovely coastal walk from Portmellon. To say we were impressed would be an understatement. I went for the confit pork belly starter and beef topside main. The pork belly was probably the best I’ve ever had and the portion size was very generous. The beef topside main was wonderful with the crispy and fluffy roast potatoes being my personal highlight. To get both for £22 was incredible value. Couldn’t have asked for more and will certainly be back.

Service slow…an hour after being sat down and receiving food.. went for 3 roasts, 2 chicken and a beef.. when my chicken eventual came had a Yorkshire, 3 small potato’s and a dollop of cauliflower cheese… 1 small bowl of cabbage was brought out between 3 of us.. had to ask for more veg at which they seem surprised and we then received some broccoli, never did see the carrots that were on the list with what we should have got.. no stuffing with the chicken. Very disappointed as we live in the village.. will not be going back and would definitely not recommend.. Pub at St Ewe down the road knocks the spots off this place…

The food was so good here we ate twice during our 5 day stay at nearby Seaview. The staff couldn’t have been nicer and the menu was really interesting for a pub. We shared the most amazing burrata and heritage tomato salad starter and then I had crab linguine. My partner had the steak and then we both had the burger on our second visit. Seriously impressive. The wine selection is good too - they suggest pairings for each dish. Welcoming of our dog and we can see why this pub is winning awards. Definitely recommend.

Came here for Sunday lunch based on the reviews but left extremely disappointed. £18 a head for three roasties, a yorkie, thin slices of beef, a spoonful of cauliflower cheese and a small bowl of cabbage / carrots (4 sliced ones) for three people. It looked like pigswill. I had the mussels which were all very gritty. If we'd have been asked how it was whilst eating we would have given the disappointed feedback. Instead we did say when our plates were cleared to be told it would be passed on to the chef. We also asked if the ice cream was gluten free. Off he went to check and didn't return.... I then had to find someone to ask for the bill. It wasn't busy. On a plus the full fat coke was nice and we could take our dog in but we shan't go again and would definitely not recommend.

We also booked a table here the same night as the reviewer below. This was our first time at The Barley Sheaf in Gorran, recommended by family. We had booked a rare night out to celebrate our wedding anniversary. On approaching the pub, yes, it was obvious this wasn't going to be the quiet romantic evening we had planned. The head chef came over straight away to sit with us and explain the situation. This was not a normal Saturday evening, the village had lost somebody dear to them suddenly and this was the wake. He also took interest in why we were there, and he expressed he would try his best to make it an enjoyable evening for us. My husband really enjoyed his steak and I tried something new in the roasted Aubergine which was yummy too. We actually commented on leaving that we would make an effort to go back, due to the yummy food and the way the head chef and his team communicated with us on arrival and through the evening.

I booked a table for me and my partner for his birthday as I’ve heard good things about the food here. When we arrived we instantly knew there was an event on that we hadn’t been made aware of. Sadly it turns out there was a wake for a local that had passed recently. But this however meant that there was a live band on and the pub was rammed full of people that had been drinking all day. It was so loud we couldn’t hear each other speak and that was before the band started! The manager came over to apologise, he said he sent an email to warn people that had booked there would be a wake on and would be very loud but apparently this email hadn’t sent. Sounded like a lie to me. I wouldn’t have minded if we had been pre warned, completely get that a pub would host a wake especially for a local in a village like gorran. We would’ve just cancelled and booked again another time. We ended up leaving after a drink and left quite annoyed and disappointed as we weren’t made aware of the wake taking place. Poor communication and management, took our business elsewhere.

Arrived for food. But there was a wake and a live band at the same time. Bars absolutely choka and unable to get near, it’s really noisy. Stayed for a drink and left. Was given a table that simply did not fit the amount of people booked for it. A really poor oversite on their part. And the booker of the meal was not informed even after going in and liaising before the meal.

Booked months in advance for 9 of us for a 50th birthday celebration, turned up to find we were stuffed in a corner on a table big enough for 6, on top of that there was a wake and a live band. That was not the issue, no communication to inform us of this to allow us to make alternative arrangements.

We had dinner here on Sunday night. The food was okay, although the sauce with the plaice, which was fish of the day, rather overpowered the delicate flavour of the plaice, and the Sirloin steak was quite chewy. The meal was let down by the slap dash service. Having asked to see the desert menu and having to repeat the request, we then spent 15 minutes waiting to order deserts before abandoning hope and decided to leave without. There was no shortage of front of house staff, just none seeming to keep an eye on the customers. Very disappointing

We booked this pub/restaurant for Sunday lunch without having any idea what to expect, but as soon as we walked through the door we knew it was going to be great. It has been sympathetically refurbished in soft earthy colours with soft oak tables and chairs and a flagstone floor. Busy but not crowded, there was a nice vibe. First we sank into one of two lovely squashy leather sofas to enjoy a beer and have a read of our paper before lunch. The menu was reassuringly simple, promising a few dishes cooked really well. When the young man informed us that they had run out of the roast beef my heart sank, but he then told us that the chef would cook us a sirloin steak. I wasn’t sure that it would be the same but I was very wrong! The meat was perfectly cooked to a medium (we could have asked for rare but chose to let chef decide) and was beautifully tender. The huge dish of various vegetables, perfectly cooked with little caramelised chunks of carrot and parsnip, red and green cabbage and cauliflower and broccoli cheese was beautifully seasoned. No need for salt and pepper here. This was a perfect Sunday roast, the best we have had (and we have visited plenty of good establishments over the years) the crowning glory for me was the horseradish sauce, somehow whipped into a fluffy little taste bomb! Lovely surroundings, great food and really good people doing a great job. We will be back Thankyou

The guy who served us was lovely and friendly. The fish and chips meal and the burger meal was very good. Unfortunately my steak and ale pie was very disappointing as it only had 5 small pieces of beef and was quite a small pie served with sprouting broccoli. I thought £17 was expensive for this meal. I was refunded off it the price of my small glass of wine but still a lot of money for what I got.

We had a pie and mash, the mash was smoked mash which had a strong flavour of bacon and was covered in crispy onions…. too many flavours to go with the steak and ale pie. I had ricotta and spinach ravioli in a cream sauce which again covered in crispy onions….. too many flavours. It made it average. 2 mains a bread starter a pint and a bottle of wine for £90. Not worth it, would t eat there again. Restaurant staff were lovely.

Been coming here for the last 3 years and although it’s good I think it used to be better. The fish and chips are my favorite I just love how light the batter is. I tried the crab risotto which wasn’t at all good it was a small portion in a large dish and it had been almost flattened down with a spoon to make it cover the bottom so not a lot of it and it felt very gritty/sandy just wasn’t pleasant. I had to keep drinking water to get it down plus I only spotted 2 small bits of crab. It was expensive and not good value. After coming here for a number of years the one thing I’ve noticed is the inconsistent potion sizes. We ate here 4 times. Twice I had the fish and chips. The first one was a small portion but the next time I had it it was much bigger. Bigger fish and more chips. The desserts and cocktails are good. The service is very good and all the staff are engaging. The menu could do with an update and there were no specials which I’m sure in the past they did have a couple of specials. Wish it could have been a 4 out of 5 but not this time.

I don't write reviews as a rule - but I am making. an exception for this restaurant as I was so disappointed. The staff were friendly. The venue lacked a bit of. atmosphere. Our starters. were fine- no complaints. there. My wife and I ordered steak. This was the worst steak we've ever had in a restaurant. It was tasteless and rubbery. I had my suspicions as soon as I saw the steak had been sliced beforehand, I suspect I may have needed a chain saw to cut it otherwise. Really disappointing after paying £29 pounds each. The waitress looked at our plates and concluded from our leavings that one steak had been fully eaten. Not the case as my wife had put her steak onto my dish in disgust. We were subsequently charged half price for one of. the steaks. This is simply not good enough. I'd never, EVER eat here again.

Stopped for food but told short staffed and would have to wait an hour and half for food, had a drink and got food elsewhere. Would try again.

Superb stay at The Fountain Inn. My old local from 35 years ago. A very warm welcome from Tracey, a very comfortable room and excellent breakfast. We will return ! Highly recommend.
