Our first visit as fairly new to the area. Very welcoming, friendly, helpful staff. Enjoyed looking at the cars as it was a Motor fest event. Food was lovely, my husband had the pie of the day and I enjoyed roast beef. Will definitely be returning. Great country location near the Basingstoke canal.

Father’s Day Sunday lunch with the family. Nice country pub with friendly service, However the Sunday roast was very poor . Very small portions with one carrot, courgette and a minuscule floret of cauliflower cheese. What a shame on such a special day. Very overpriced for what I would say was more like a child’s portion.

A lovely family meal today during the late May bank holiday. Everything was just perfect….great drink selection (rare ciders too), friendly service and excellent food. Dog friendly and a menu for the furry friends too. We visited last year and had a nice meal then too. We had the Sunday roast (beef), homemade pie and the rack of ribs and a sharing Camembert to start (really good!( No room for a desert on this occasion. Very happy to recommend!…would definitely come back for more!

The BLT £10.50 which is expensive It only had 2 thin pieces of bacon and the chips were a very small portion of oven fries. My son's chicken burger was on the small side for £14 but at least his chips were a decent portion. The staff were friendly and helpful which was good as a compulsary tip is added but the food is not value for money .

Lovely pub.As a group of 4 we decided to sit outside in one of the marquees, which are a great idea. All instructions regarding ordering were very clear and easy. After reading a couple of negative comments on here I'm wondering if they got the right pub??Given the current situation, and hospitality being on its knees can't people be a little forgiving and just support these local businesses that are trying to operate in uncertain times??Anyway, food was lovely, portion sizes very good, and great location. Will definitely be back!

Ten of us visited the Barley Mow last Sunday on a stop over while barging down the Odiham Canal. What a great place to eat. We bought a dog at the last minute and although we were booked into the restaurant they happily changed our table to one in the bar, not an easy move for 10. We all ordered different meals from roasts to sandwiches but everything came out together, hot, tasty and nicely presented. The waitresses were lovely, smiley and attentive. We will definitely eat at this little gem again.

As two drenched cyclists, we were desperate for cover and refreshment! Fortunately we arrived just before the pub opened at noon, and were able to take advantage of the hospitality. The pub has lovely leather sofas to relax on as well as tables. We only had the coffee plus cake combo rather than lunch, but it was delicious. Most importantly, though, was just how nice they were and not minding of our dripping state.

On our way to a weekend break in Basingstoke we stopped here to check out canal parking and slipway (which is adjacent) as we would be canoeing here at some point. Was logical to get lunch here before travelling on and weren't disappointed. Was a little quiet for a Friday lunch time, and a few more people would have improved the ambience but no drama.

Called enquired about Sunday roast, booked table, turned up at exact time. No greeting or acknowledgement from staff on entry despite them knowing we were there, very poor customer service. Stood for 5-6 minutes waiting to order drinks again without any acknowledgement. Beer was good. Shown to table and ordered beef roasts, 20 to 25 mins elapsed, which was fine, perception was we were getting hot fresh food. Served with stone cold plates and luke warm everything, the hottest thing on the plate was the horseradish. roast potatoes seemed like they had been stood for hours, yorkies were overcooked, luke warm gravy over meat. Had to ask three times to get a jug of water. The clue may have been on being shown to our table that they were out of mac & cheese, I would suggest to anybody that that is this eaterys level. Very disappointed, one of the worst meals and experiences I have had out and that includes certain fast food outlets.

I was staying at the very grand Four Seasons hotel this weekend for my girlfriend's birthday on Sunday. Unfortunately the hotel could only offer us a table in the restaurant at 9.45pm which was too late for us. Also we had had lunch at the hotel in the afternoon and the service was very ineffecient and the room was noisey with lots of kids. So when we did the canal walk in the afternoon and stopped in the pub for a pint we took note that we could return in the evening for dinner. This is what we did.The staff in the Barley Mow are very polite, helpful and friendly and made us feel very welcome - both in the afternoon even though they were closing allowed us to buy a drink and enjoy it in peace outside. The pub is a quiet traditional local english pub very nice. The menu offers simple traditional british pub food but with some obvious ambitions to reach for a higher standard which is to be commended - for example they offer a steak and ale pie with a "proper top and bottom" when I read this my heart leapt for joy because I hate the more common "cheats" pub pie where the filling is simply poured into a small bowl and then has a layer of puff pastry put over the top - that is not a traditional british pie !! Unfortunately I didnt quite have the appetite (was suffering from a cold) that evening to go for it - instead i opted for the Chilli Con Carne with sides of Fresh Vegetables, Mac and Cheese and beans (comfort food). I had a soup of Cider and Celleriac as a starter. My girlfriend had their speciality sausages, mash, gravey and fresh vegetables. My soup was absolutely delicious, hot and lovely tasting. My mains I am sad to report on this occassional were slightly below par on the execution - not quite hot enough overal especially the fresh vegetables and the chilli. The chilli wasnt flavoured as hot and spicy as I would like and could have done with being a bit hotter and the mac and cheese I think needs to go back to the drawing board - it really missed the mark that evening - didnt taste nice and was dry. Its a difficult dish to do well and easy to get wrong. But I think they can get it. My girlfriend really enjoyed her sausages and there were no complaints at all from her side.I give this pub a good review - even though some critical points above for improvement on the food side - because I am quite fussy and think we need to be committed to improve standards in food in this country. You can read my critical points about the Four Seasons above. But this pub's heart is obviously in the right place. They are offering an excellent traditional english menu at a fair price, a lovely ambiente to sit in. I think with a bit more care and attention to the food execution they could have a winner here and I would be happy to visit again and either try the same again or something else.

We stopped by again later that afternoon (a Sunday) to eat, but the kitchen was closed at 3:30pm (sign said "lunch until 4"), so we were a little disappointed. They did offer us chips. We popped in here today after walking three miles along the Basingstoke Canal. The pub is a short walk from Barley Mow Bridge on the canal. There seems to be plenty of room inside, two smaller rooms near the bar and a larger conservatory type room. It looks like it would be good in summer too as there is a large garden. Service was good, we chose a table near the bar and orders for drinks and food were quickly taken. I and my wife had hot baguettes - her BLT, me sausage. My daughter chose chicken nuggets from the decent children's menu. The food came quickly - the baguettes were good sized and came with a generous salad, coleslaw and crisps. The chicken nuggets were very good quality and came with plenty of chips and peas. We all enjoyed our food and would probably do this walk and visit again. However it is a little expensive and on Sunday a ten percent tip is added to the bill regardless. For our food, plus tea, a J2O, a pint of Doom Bar and the tip, we paid over £31.

Well kept beers (London Pride, Doombar etc.) fine lagers (Perroni, Becks) and some Ciders both traditional and fruity. What more could you ask for? Oh I know, decent food. The BM delivers here as well with a varied menu and also lovely Roasts on a Sunday. To complete the "local" cocktail add a regular Curry night and a Quiz night with a meal deal and stir! (Not that any of the locals stir anything). Car Park, outside garden area, and dogs allowed inside complete the picture. Closed this evening for a private party. A little frustrating for me as I used to consider myself a local ( attending at least 45 Friday evenings a year ) But I have decided to give it a miss until the new owners take over ( the pub is up for sale ) as I have to drive past 2 other pubs that don't exclude locals on a regular basis in favour of earning a fast buck. The food recently has been excellent and I can highly recommend it, along with the beer which is well kept but the lack of service has compelled me to find enjoyment elsewhere. It's a shame as over the last 6 or 7 years I have really enjoyed the place but I'm not sure if it's quite my kind of thing anymore. I fully understand that this review will seal my fate but I'm only echoing what other reviewers have recently said and sharing my personal opinion. A group of us went over to this pub for their beer and music festival. To be greeted by a rude and arrogant landlady. We decided to order some food from the dining room. Well what a mistake the poor waitrese had to keep coming out to apologise and say they didnt have things on the menu. When any decent chef being a chef myself can comment would come out and apologise. Well after getting it all right we waited over 1.5 hours for our food to which we were all so hungry thought we would query it. To our dismay we were approached by the landlady and she simply and extremely rudely were told that there is a wait and if we were not happy she could stop the cooking and we could leave. Anoid we decided to waitand when the food did eventually arrive we tried to find something to fault with the food but couldn't. So thats why I am giving a 2 for the quality of food. For service and customer relations its a 0. Service absolutely disgusting. The Landlords need to learn how to speak to people. So be prepared to

On arrival I was greeted with a clean well kept country village pub close to the banks of the Basingstoke canal. The pub was quiet, but as it was early in the week that didn't matter. The menu seemed to offer a small but reasonable selection of food. Nothing outstanding, but a selection none the less. I chose the daily special of Garlic chicken curry and a glass of Stella Artois. At £15.00 I was hoping for a treat indeed.I sat awaiting my meal, soaking in the sounds of an obscure internet radio station in a clean and comfortable lounge area. My meal arrived fairly soon after I had made myself comfortable. It was served with the rice formed in a small upturned bowl an the sauce in a balti style dish. A large popadom and a small dish of mango chutney were added as sides. Presentation may be a feast for the eyes, unfortunately the meal itself was not so good.I have never had a less favoursome meal in my life. How can a garlic chicken curry not taste of anything is beyond me. The meat, though tender had no flavour at all. And the sauce also had no taste. I could see onion and chilli in the sauce but everything was totally overpowered by the heat from the chilli. All in all though the looks of the premises and the food promised. I left feeling very disappointed and seriously out of pocket. Fortunately Fleet has a McDonald's and a KFC. Next time I visit I will stick to their tastier options.

We popped in for lunch after an excellent dog walk at the nearby Basingstoke Canal. The prices are a wee bit high but boy the plate of Nachos which are so plain elsewhere were just brilliant here. Plenty on the plate, warm crisps, fresh chilli beef, homemade salsa, sour cream, chopped tomatoes & onions, properly heated cheeses. No need for anything else therefore the price turned out to be cheap not expensive! My loved one had simple Scampi &chips but, again, the chips were stunning....really light and crisp.Nice area outside so BBQ's here in the summer would be delightful.

We popped in for a meal recently and with the kids and did not need to book. Service was good and the food was all good. Reasonable pricing and would probably return in the coming months, so would recommend.

My wife and I eat at the Barley Mow regularly. They have a very varied menu and, for local pub food, it is excellent and very reasonably priced. The service is always quick and courteous and the beer is good too.If you like sausages, they have a speciality sausage menu which is first class.

Visited the pub one lunchtime. Bar staff were surly and offhand and didn't seem to want to serve. Paid £4.10 for a coffee and bag of crisps! Looked at the menu and prices seemed very high for a pub with little passing trade, which won't do them any favours. Won't be going again due to prices and miserable staff.

Very welcoming owner with great beers, managed to get a table without bookings for my family and I, I decided to go for the special sea food ( salmon chunks, prawns, squid whitebait) sounded nice but what I received wasn't.... It arrived in a basket, all covered in batter and Deep fried within an inch of its life.... The chips were the only good thing about this meal, wish I had gone for the Sunday roast :( my wife had a great meal, she ordered the mussels as a main which looked and tasted excellent. The service wasn't great, but that's what you get when employing teenagers. We ended up cancelling our desert as it took to long. I will give it another go though as it does seem like a nice pub.

They had a hog roast and beer festival event with live music. It was very busy, food was good pity there was no "HOG ROAST" as advertised. However food was good and service was efficient considering how busy they were. Music was brilliant LOVE THE MUSHROOMS.

Nice Sunday lunch and a lovely location in the country, perfect stop on the Canal. Barmaid who took our order was a bit grumpy and overcharged one of us but didn't spoil a lovely break from the canal.

Very rare for a true Pom to find a Touch of the Boere here in England! Yes a South African / British partnership and what excellent hosts. The menu is British traditional at truly ZAR Rand prices. Nothing expensive, good quality tasting food and just about everything on the lunchtime menu under £10. Great British beers, local of course and plenty of space indoors or outdoors for enjoying the great weather.Been twice now and will keep it on my radar when visiting UK.Ps We live in Cape Town.

I love this pub. Great food and a lovely spot for a lazy Sunday. We came here following our wedding and the staff could not have been better. Friendly and welcoming and gave us lovely memories. It was just what we wanted and the sausage menu is worth going for alone.

We have had delicious Sunday roasts here previously so decided to try again. A little later than usual arrived at 3pm - to be told they had sold out of roast dinners. Not a problem we thought the normal menu is good. We both chose steak and ale pie with mash and fresh vegetables which we had both previously had and we knew was delicious. When the meal turned up it was minus the fresh vegetables but half the plate was covered with peas. When we questioned this we were informed as they had sold out of roast they also had no fresh vegetables. Why had we not been told this when we ordered? We were told that they assumed that as the roast had sold out we should have known that there were no vegetables either. It did not matter that if I was not going to have fresh vegetables with the meal I would have chosen something else. I was then asked if 'you enjoyed the pie didn't you'. When I questioned the bill as we had not had the meal as described on the menu and the enjoyment had been spoilt by lack of vegetables - the bill was adjusted by £2 as we had not had the vegetables!!! Clearly this establishment does not want our return business.

Two visits at different times of the evening (mid and late) and both times very good, plentiful and well cooked food at reasonable prices (for our area!!). Friendly service by students and I particularly liked the fact there was a good choice of ciders and beers, although close to London prices!! (ha! ha! - you can't get away with such praise without some criticism at almost £4 a pint!)I like to try a Sunday Roast at local eateries before giving an up-dated verdict, but this place comes highly recommended (by my wife!) as the place where she has enjoyed THE best pre- Christmas Dinner, when accompanied by lots of friends, in many years!Looking forward to our next visit in the near future!I should mention the good bits - local produce, meats and veg. sausage specialities, hot food.Greeted with a smile - and polite service.... Everything you should expect, but not very often get!!!!! .

We visited on a cold March day and the two fires were roaring away keeping the place lovely and warm. Great selection of food, and the meals were fantastic - all extremely tasty and well presented. Prices are very reasonable and good service. Great for a walk afterwards by the canal. Would definitely come again.

Mum was over the moon by the end of it, had a couple of hiccups as the Camembert didn't come out quite cooked enough first time round, but was superb 2nd, along with the fresh baked selection of breads, steak was cooked perfectly and pudding was a dream! Catered for my little 2 year old brother who they then looked after brilliantly even enduring his over excited little squeals from time to time! Really nice feel, and decently priced it worked out less than 30 a head really, which is fantastic, definitely coming back

Our daughter was away skiing and it was 1 year to the day that we had moved to fleet. So we decided to try somewhere new. First impressions were great, good vibe and lots life in the place. We had booked and had a table in front of the bar. We ordered drinks and food, the food was great. The moment was when we ordered another round of drinks. I had a pint already so ordered a soft drink. They delivered another beer, which I said I had not ordered, simple mistake, but then the landlady came and harried me as the beer was poured. It was not my error but was made to feel dishonest. Shame his could easily have been a usually but will not return now. Philip

I had lunch here with my daughter and grandson.I had not been here for years. It was a clean & comfortable pub. We sat in the conservatory. The menu was varied & reasonably priced. Not cheap but not expensive. The staff were welcoming and friendly. We just had filled granary baguettes with a nice salad selection, coleslaw & crisps. We were naughty and had a bowl of chips on the side ! My 20 month old grandson had cheesy pasta. The food was fresh & well presented. The things that were cooked were cooked perfectly. The landlady came after a few minutes to check that all was well and offered more cheese if my grandson would like it. It was a lovely lunch. I have to comment on the state of the Ladies toilet. (no idea about the Gents !) Very clean but how many ladies toilets in a pub have flowers, individual flannel cloths to dry your hands with, tissues, hand and body lotion, Impulse body spray (and other things that only ladies would use!) all free to hand on the side for customers to use. I think that this was a very nice pub and I shall definitely return, probably with my husband for an evening meal as there were some nice choices of food. I therefore recommend this pub to others.

Been here a couple of times now and I just cannot fault the food. Great menu, including locally sourced ingredients and a lovely location. It's pricier than usual 'pub grub', bit more than Heron on the Lake but cheaper than the Exchequer and in my opinion the food is better/better value than the Exchequer. They also do an amazing fireworks night!! (see their website for details on how it works).
