We stayed over in our Motorhome, nice spot near the Canal. £10 donation to charity to stay, which we didn't mind, as we didn't eat in the pub. The pub was a bit worn looking, but clean, the warmth of the welcome means you don't really notice that ! You couldn't wish for a friendlier bunch, from the staff to the locals. Nice selection of beers and a safe stopover just off the M5. Don't be alarmed by the bridge at the entrance ! Trains run at the back of the car park, but stopped about 10pm so we had a nice restful sleep.

We've been meaning to try The Boat & Anchor for quite a while and we weren't disappointed. The food was absolutely delicious. Everything home made, including the chips. Perfectly cooked steak. A good range of desserts, home made Sticky Toffee Pudding. Lovely surroundings, alongside the canal, it will be lovely in the summer. The hosts were excellent, very warm and genuinely hospitable. Just had a lovely meal here, to say it's January the weather isn't so bad and the view of the canal is gorgeous. So the food was lovely and the beers were nice too. All the staff were super friendly and couldn't do enough, very nice indeed. Would I come back, oh yes, I was passing by from Yorkshire, so it would have been rood not to stop, next time I'm down this way I will be calling in. We have a dog and there is a beautiful canal walk and this pub is super dog friendly. Support this cracking pub, it's got a lot going for it, its residential too.

The pub itself appeared to of had an overhaul since my last visit and was very welcoming and inviting. The staff on the other hand were not so welcoming and were quite rude and miserable. When I last visited there was an employee, tattoo's and very little hair, who made us feel very welcome and had a smile on his face and could actually pour a decent pint. The food was very over priced for the lack of taste it contained - disappointed to say the least.

It's right next to the very noisy M5. There was lots of bar waste visible outside. On walking in there was lots of copies of the conspiracy theorists' publication 'The Light' available for you, not appreciated. It has the most unimaginative menu going and they were sticky. A big TV with MTV playing just screamed a lack of sophistication and made me not want to eat there even more. You could also see some of their private living area which wasn't good. The conservatory was very bare and again doesn't make you look forward to eating there. The actual food wasn't too bad, side salads could be more creative, consider herbs and homemade dressings with more interesting fruit & veg rather than iceberg lettuce, cucumber cheap cherry tomatoes and red onion. The staff were friendly.

Booked in advance for Sunday Lunch and was told plated roast and full menu would be available. Arrived to an empty car park, never a good sign. The pub itself was freezing cold, no heating on. We were one of 3 tables, the rest of the place was empty. Asked if we wanted food (pretty obvious as we’d booked a table) and were offered ‘chicken or beef’. That was it. The chicken was inedible. Dry and hard. The cauliflower cheese didn’t taste of cauliflower or cheese. It was indescribably awful. The beef was tough as old boots. I ate a handful of veggies and left the rest. We decided to bail out before dessert as we were freezing cold and had little hope of the choice or actual food being any good. The staff looked almost apologetic from the minute we arrived. Almost as if they knew we were in for a terrible meal with no atmosphere in a freezing cold big, empty, soulless building. To add insult to injury I was charged £4.60 for half a watery, flat cola and a glass of blackcurrant squash. I’m not sure why I didn’t complain and refuse to pay. I think I was too shocked at how badly the place had deteriorated from how it was years ago when it was packed out for a brilliant Sunday carvery. I had to take my son to Wetherspoon after as he was still hungry so ended up paying for lunch twice. Not happy and will never return while under its current ownership/management.

Found ourselves cycling along the Bridgwater to Taunton canal one sunny lunchtime and decided to stop off and grab a drink and a bite to eat. The soft drinks, pint of lime and soda reasonably priced at £1, not sure about alcoholic drinks I'm afraid, didn't want to risk drinking too much and falling in the canal. Ordered food and was very disappointed when the beer battered fish turned out to be what appeared to be a fillet from a birds eye packet you can buy in the local supermarket and not the type you'd get in most restaurants and chip shops. The service was great and the two chaps attentive and helpful. Overall the venue from outside needs a bit of attention but it wouldn't stop me stopping off there again for a drink and something to eat but it wouldn't be the fish, the baguette looked good though, so maybe next time that's what I'll have as the menu was very limited. Whilst we were there quite a few other people stopped for a drink and something to eat.

I said remember the last time we went for dinner here it was a nightmare a year ago problem with a very rude man. Well we sat outside and a young lady made us very welcome. We had beefburger and chips each plus's Guinness and lemonade and lime. The food was beautiful home made burgers. The chef came out and asked if we enjoyed our meal which we said was very nice. We also found out that the boat and anchor has new people running in. The new management are very nice and we wish them all the best in running the pub. A lot better than a year ago. It's a pity dogs are not allowed in bar they would make a lot of money if they were dog friendly.

Last minute booking to visit family locally. Despite the premises (bar and restaurant) being closed over the Christmas period we were welcomed to stay, the lady on the phone stressed the bar would be shut and that no breakfast would be on offer but this didn't deter us. Our room was in the Annexe building to accommodate our dog being with us. The train line and M5 weren't an issue what so ever, we hardly heard a thing. Our double room was spotless, including the bathroom. Couldn't fault a thing. Wifi available worked not a problem and the TV also worked fine. We'll definitely be staying here again! We've not finished exploring the canal route yet. Cant wait to see what the Spring/summer sun has to reveal. For a 3 star accommodation, hidden in a beautiful location and friendly owners; £55 per night for the room is more than reasonable. We will for sure be back!!!

Don't bother!Despite the beautiful setting of this hotel, my business executive room, which was away from main building, only had a view of the motorway with the car lights shining in the room, it was dark and dingy, so it didn't feel much like I was in lovely location. To be honest I didn't feel very welcome here, as no help was offered with my luggage, they were aware I was on my own and a pensioner. Was shocked and upset when after I had changed my clothes after relaxing for an hour in the room, and went over to main building at 9.15pm for a drink and to sit in the sun by the canal, only to find everything was closed up including the bar! Tried to telephone hotel, but no one answered. The room was very basic, not sure how they can describe it as a business room. Slow internet. Bathroom turned out to be a very small shower room with very little room to put own toiletries. No wardrobe, hangers fitted near ceiling, impossible to use. Not worth the ridiculous amount of money you have to pay for a poorly run place. Decided to go home that night and complain when I got home, as manager presumably had had an early night. Myself, my dad, his partner and her daughter all visited this pub on a late afternoon/early evening. We arrived before they started serving at 6pm but since it was 5pm we were delighted when the chef said he didn’t mind starting early for us. After we had ordered what we wanted at the bar the waitress came out with the cuterly. We had the same waitress the whole time and I was disgusted at how much she lacked the knowledge of how to hygenically serve a table. Firstly, she laid the cuterly by having her hands grip the part of the cuterly you eat from and not the handles. Secondly, when our food arrived she had her thumb in contact with our food and the tea towel touching the food as well. She also dunked the corner of the tea towel in my dads drink when she put his meal down. Additionally, she also dropped the garnish off one of our plates onto the bench we were sat at outside and just said ‘oops’ and carried on.

Called here last Friday night after being stuck on traffic on the M5. First impressions looked very nice. We found a table very easily as there were very few people in there. Started to look for a menu and after requesting one from one of the bar staff we were informed they do not have written a written menu, it is all chalked up on a board. We decided to order the steak but were then told they had no steak, even though there were two different ones advertised. The only other thing we remotely fancied was the "beer battered" cod and chips, so we ordered that. I noted that the young lad who served me had no manners whatsoever, there wasn't any please or thank you from him. After ordering we began waiting. Approximately 20 minutes later a young girl came to "dress" the table, as she put it. In other words she brought the knives and forks and condiments. Another 15 minutes passed until our food arrived. The young girl apologised the delay, said "Enjoy" and away she went. On the plate there were chips, peas, a slice of lemon, a bit of lettuce, one sliver of tomato, a small pot or tar tare sauce and a piece of fish. The fish was not beer battered as advertised but had breadcrumbs on and I know for fact that it was frozen fish, probably Bird's Eye or Findus. I could tell by the uniform shape of it and that is the reason it had taken so long to cook it. It most definitely wasn't cod. I know it was the wrong thing to do but because we were hungry we ate it and intended to mention it to the bar staff on the way out. By the time we were ready to go the chalk board had been altered from "Beer Battered Cod" to plain "Cod and Chips" so our battle was lost. This mistake cost us just over £27. Most definitely NOT recommended.

We visited this restaurant for an evening meal with friends at the beginning of August. I ordered the pork loin with new potatoes and that was exactly what I got, ie no vegetables, no salad, no garnish, not even any gravy! When my meal arrived, I asked if it came with any vegetables and was told no and I wasn't even asked if I would like any added. The plate looked ridiculous with the meat at one end and the potatoes at the other and that was it! Half way through our meal, the young waitress came and asked if we were happy with our meals. Again, I mentioned the lack of vegetables but was still not offered any. I felt a bit sorry for the poor young waitress but this is not the service I would expect. Our friends said their meals were ok but nothing special. I'm afraid we won't be returning.

Great view of the M5, and if you are struggling to locate the hotel, there are always the 7ft letters painted on the roof advertising the closest junction, not shown on the website mind you. The rooms were clean and although basic it was a comfortable enough stay, providing you kept the window closed to stop the noise of the traffic that never died. The chapter that made our stay the most exciting was the food. Think of a child that has just mastered the on button of microwave and uses it overzealously for every meal and that is really where we are setting the bar with the quality of food at this establishment. The whitebait that we ordered as a starter had freezer burn it was that old, and it was cooked so much that actually we were just served the skeletons and the heads. The Nachos were just bowl of partly microwaved cheese that was served as a solid lump and the potato skins served with tinned mushrooms and more congealed cheese was enough to make your stomach churn. After surveying the menu I thought a safe bet would be sausage and chips as a main, I don’t think the sausage had ever seen a pig in its life but had been well acquainted with a deep fat fryer. What baffled me is that we were expected to pay for this privilege and at £15.00 a main this wasn’t cheap. The breakfast the morning after was again microwaved, scrambled eggs served in one solid mass served with a side of grey/green bacon. The tomato sauce bottle looked like it had been reused since the hotel opened, the butter had obviously been rescued from someone’s plate from the night before as it still had salad stuck to it. We decided that that the services down the road offered a better breakfast and it was preferable to eat a prepacked sandwich in the comforts of a carpark rather than reliving the game of is this safe to eat or not? If you are planning to spend most of the time out of the hotel, and just need somewhere to lay your head, then this is fine. If you are planning to make the most of your hotel during your stay, avoid.

called in for lunch today as it is halfway home, one of our party is celiac so we asked what is available, well off the lunchboards there was nothing, cant have potato skins or chips as they are deep fried and everything is done in the same fryer as batter and breadcrumbs they said the calvery is ok as long as you dont want gravy or cauliflower cheese so my son went up came back with 1 slice of meat, brocolli, carrots, swede could not have yorkshire pudding, went to get roast potatoes but could not have them as they used the same tongs to pick up the yorkshire puddings, so my son went home very hungry. there are not many places where they use the same fryers for chips aswell as battered or breaded products. they really need a good kick in the rear end and bring themselves up to date with food allergies, its publisised enough and there are plenty of products out there to cater for it if you can be bothered to look and make the effort

This was my retirement evening after 53 years working. My colleagues and I visited The Boat and Anchor for drinks and nibbles. There were about 20 of us and from the moment we walked through the door until we left, mine host looked after us extremely well. The atmosphere was perfect a real treat, to spend time with friends and to be so well looked after.I would recommend the Boat and Anchor to anyone, I wish I had discovered it sooner.

We went for dinner today as we often like a walk along the canal and have a meal here. I like the lasagne as it is done in a dish of its own with bubbling cheese on top. Well not today, it was a little square of lasagne for the same price as previously. I asked the young girl serving why it was different and she just said it had changed!!!! So now you get a third of the dish for the same price. Not good at all as it was like a child's meal!!!!!!

This place has so much potential with it's canal-side location, but we felt bitterly disappointed. My elderly father and I were the only people in the pub when we arrived, and the bar lady was sitting in a comfy chair seemingly doing some paperwork.First off my pint of real ale was off. She poured a second and that too was far from great. After disappearing upstairs (or somewhere) to see the owner she came back to say that it was a fresh barrel and should be ok. Another pint was poured, and that was a little better, but certainly not what I'd c all an enjoyable pint.In the meantime we'd looked at the menu, which seemed a little basic. Prices were cheap, and I guess the menu is aimed at the family market who probably visit for the canal. Sadly the quality of the meals wasn't great either, with mine being luke warm. All in all this isn't a pub I'll be keen to return to in a hurry.

Found this great place as a stop over on our way to South Cornwall. What a pleasant find.It is always difficult to find good places to stay with good disabled accommodation, and this great pub was ideal.Yes, the access in the room could be easier (door into wet room) however there was little else to fault.Great value, good wholesome food, pleasant friendly staff and management, what more could you want.Do not know much about Bridewater and the surrounding area, but if you were planning a visit this way, I would recommend this place.Good atmosphere in the bar area, and a bright garden room by the canal side, and garden would be great for a summers evening.

After a walk along the canal this looks and excellent place to stop but they definitely are not a dog friendly pub. We were told we could not sit in the garden with the dogs and had to go to another area, which was just a rought pice of ground with some tables and benches and builders fencing. No view of the canal and very tatty. This area is also inhabited by the put dog, which barked and growled at everyone who came in. The lady at the bar was to say the least, not welcoming and we would not visit again. Cannot comment on the food as, due to the unfirendly welcome we had received, we did not bother with food and did not even finish our drinks before we left. I wish we had taken a photo of the area where they told us to go. To be so unfriendly toward dogs, when the pub is situated just where dog walkers will be, is very short sighted.

A typical Somerset country pub. The bar and conservatory areas were clean and well presented. More than passed the clean loo test :-). Staff were very pleasant. We visited for the carvery lunch here on Fathers Day and it was very good ... desserts yummy! Pre booked and table ready for us with requested high chair. Nothing not to like. Plenty of parking (and speed bump didn't phase my car). Will definitely return.

Wow, what a dump. We arrived and ordered a pint of Carlsberg and a J2o, the lager smelt of yeast like the pipes had not been cleaned in ages which was confirmed when we overheard the so called chef and the landlady discussing they will clean them tomorrow after my complaint, the food arrived and looked edible until I tried the chips which were rock hard and cold in the middle. The so called chef came over and asked if everything was ok and I said that the chips were hard, he wanted to try one and took it off my fork, without saying anything he disappeared to the kitchen. He came back a few minutes later with a plate full of hot and cooked chips from a " fresh batch" with some Pork underneath, I am Jewish and found that massively offensive. Please state if you any food restrictions whilst ordering, should you dare to go here.Shocking place, don't do it.

This hotel should not be mistaken with the Boat and Anchor in Bridgwater. Check the post code before booking. The one I am writing about is TA7 0AQ. Be careful, this pub is very remore and SatNav may not find it. So best to check the map before you set off. I booked a room here on booking.com to attend a seminar nearby. It was cheap. When I rang to get the address for, the owner was unhelpful. He complained because I had used a website to book. He then asked me not to turn up because they would be closed after 10:00pm. I arrived before 10:00pm and was allowed to my room. The owner has a reputation to be rude and aggressive towards its costumers. The room was tatty and furniture was basic and old. There was a constant noise from M5 motorway (which is about 100 yards from the hotel) and I had to shut the windows. The bed was uncomfortable. The toilet had a waste pump which was so noisy, that would wake up people if you flushed at night. I would not stay in this place again.

I'm sorry to say I was very disappointed by this place. It is in what could be a beautiful location but sadly the best has not been made of the pub whatsoever. It is extremely dated and tired on inside and out (except for the toilets which are very lovely and modern but not at all in keeping with the rest of it!). It is in dire need of more than a tidy up. Myself and my partner both had steak... not the best quality of steak at all and the sauce that came with it (for an extra £3!) Most definitely came out of a microwave and was lumpy and horrible, and the chips were half cooked. If you're desperate to eat then that's fine, if you can wait, please do!

We were meeting friends at this Bar, who had seen this Pub from the M5 motorway coming up from Devon and thought it looked nice. We were house hunting in the Somerset area and decided to try it. We all the Sunday carvery which was a choice between Beef and Pork (or both if you preferred). We all agreed it was very nicely cooked, hot and plenty of it and worth the money. The owner was actually serving the carvery and he was very friendly and obliging. We sat in their conservatory which was very nice and bright. All in all a very nice meal and would certainly go back there again if we were in the area.

Nice looking pub with large car park, set on the side of the Bridgwater CanalWe had never been here before but passed it many times as we could see it from the motorway.Reasonable selection of real ales and good selection of wines by the glass.Large menu on blackboard to choose from which was rather long and daunting. Several unusual and different items to choose from but we did feel the prices seemed rather high but said we would re-assess this once we had eaten. Despite the fact we were the only clients the food did take quite a long time to arrive, but it was cooked to order. My partner had the venison burger which was nothing special and I had gammon with pineapple rings covered in a cheese sauce (which did not really enhance the look or taste). We feel this pub tries too hard with their diverse choices but after saying that, on a lovely day it is absolutely heaving!!

This is an excellent stopping off point close to the M5. Beside the tranquil canal and a railway level crossing, making points of interest for all the family during the brief wait while the really rather good food is cooked. Tables by the canal are good if the weather permits, inside their large conservatory is lovely if you need to be out of the weather. On a cold winter night the traditional interior of the bar is cosy enough. The menu always seems to have something that appeals to all at very reasonable cost making this one of our regular stop off points. Un pretentious food but none the worse for that. Well cooked well balanced meals, I would thoroughly recommend this place.

I had the misfortune to stop here for a early evening meal, I should have turned around and gone back out to the car after being "greeted" by a very rude young lady who's time I appeared to be encroaching on when I dared to ask for a drink! She reluctantly served me then I had the audacity to ask her if they were serving food, to which she looked away and fell silent, I took this to mean no! A couple of minutes later she asked the chef if he was cooking, he explained that everything in the kitchen was switched off and would take time to heat up but he could accommodate salad or ploughmans, the later of which we choose and requested a bowl of chips when the kitchen was operating fully! The food was awful, stale salad, a poor quality cheese, some tinned onions etc etc however the chips were far worse....when they arrived they had a taste of fish, metal and engine oil about them! Disgusting. The place itself is very tired and has clearly soon better days the best advice is to avoid visiting this establishment until they referb the place, the food and at least one of the staff. Oh and the prices it was very expensive to add insult to injury

This pub has potential due to its great location, but is badly let down by the quality of the food, attitude of the chef/owner and lack of atmosphere. I should have noticed the warning signs before setting foot in the bar - shabby exterior, empty car park, peeling paint and missing lettering from the pub sign, showing a lack of pride in the business. This was echoed by the uneasy welcome from the lady behind the bar, who was clearly stressed, even though the pub was almost empty. Dad and I made the mistake of ordering a venison burger with chips and salad, which after a 50 minute wait, was served with a burnt burger, greasy chips and a bland, cheap salad made with iceberg lettuce and scraps of pepper & tomato. When we informed the waitress that the standard of food was not acceptable, the 'chef' emerged from the kitchen with defensive body language and arrogantly told us that 'some people like their burgers cooked this way' and argued the toss on the length of time we had been waiting to be insulted by the arrival of our lunch. He begrudgingly agreed to swap our meals for ham, egg and chips, which although not burnt, were a big let down at the price. Meanwhile, my Mum and girlfriend patiently persisted with their greasy plaice and chips. Safe to say, there were not four empty plates at the end of the meal and it has been some time since I have felt so cheated out of £40. I think Gordon Ramsey would have a tough time dealing with this kitchen nightmare!I hope that the owners of the Boat & Anchor respond to this feedback and start to take care of their customers. With a change of approach, this could be a great place to visit. Until then, this is a sinking ship you should avoid - stay on the M5 until the next junction and find a pub with something more to offer.

What a terrible experience! Four of our family turned up here for lunch today. Not many people eating but 'Reserved' signs on two tables in the conservatory..... was this to give the impression they were busy? My husband said his pint of 'Moles' Best Bitter (from a Wiltshire brewery) was excellent. However, it all went downhill from there and seems to echo other reviews posted here.My husband and son both decided on the Venison Burger meal, with accompanying salad and chips. We two lassies both had plaice and chips. Despite the fact the pub was not at all busy and that we had twice asked the waitress 'how much longer', we waited 50mins in total from the order being taken to the Venison Burger meals being brought to our table. We know this for a fact because my son checked the time on the till receipt. Both burgers had been cremated, one bite was enough to warrant rejection and I have to add that my husband has NEVER complained in a restaurant before!!The chef/owner came to our table and (a) rudely challenged that we had waited 50mins, according to him we had only waited 40mins (maybe their till works to a different time than our watches) and (b) disputed that the burgers were seriously overcooked and dry.We all had chips but unfortunately they were peppered with very small black marks, a sign that the oil in which they were fried was not very clean. Although I cannot comment (I had the plaice meal, remember), it was also observed that they tasted a little bit 'fishy'.So how were our plaice meals I expect you're asking..... hmm, whilst I've already commented that the chips were, well, not the best experience, the plaice was along similar lines, bland and soulless, albeit edible. The burger meals were ungraciously substituted with (our choice) ham, egg and chips. Two slices of preformed, tasteless ham, possibly the same reheated chips and both eggs were dripping with grease!Do you want to hear about the salads? of course you do...... well, they were also completely lack lustre, one tomato between four of us (yes we got salad with our fish and chips) tasteless, devoid of any dressing, or any offer of same. The road facing pub name reads "Boa and Anchor" - might this be a reference to the pub's squeeze on quality, nicely cooked food and good customer service? On this beautiful, warm, sunny, spring afternoon the best part was our after lunch stroll along the canal.

Very busy café, but incredibly efficient team handling orders so no wait at all really! I had a chicken Sunday roast with extra gravy, they forgot my Yorkshire pudding and I didn't realise that I didn't have one until an hour later lol, oh dear, it's an age thing ha ha! Roast potatoes obviously deep fried, they were rather bland looking and tasting tbh, so oven roasts would have been much nicer as these weren't the best. £11.95 plus a coffee on top, so circa £15 in total. Dinner was nice enough, and the portions are generous also. I would return for the same, but with the Yorkie next time lol, as the service was excellent, very friendly indeed. Sort the roasties out and you're onto a winner! (P.S. I would recommend this place, the deserts looked absolutely gorgeous!)

Awful ! Overpriced ... poor service ! No meals except pastries .... a sausage roll was £6.95 ! I know it's a National Trust and we are members I agree they do a great deal of good. However, with such a prime seaside spot .... loads of families on the beach ...they should offer normal seaside food and priced! We had a coffee and a slice of cake and it came to £20 for 2 of us. Families are struggling at the moment. I can't understand why they don't offer traditional seaside food like a bag of chips, ice creams, lollies, milk shakes etc. They have a prime spot with a captive audience as its the only cafe at Brean down. Felt very dissapointed it could be so much improved !.... prices are Ridiculous !!!!! Service is bad you order then go to another partcto collect , no please or thank you !
