The Avon Inn in South Hams

We stopped off for dinner after a busy day out, this was on the off chance as we were passing, we found Really tasty home cooked food, good potion sizes and value for money. Would recommend

A small local pub, so rather claustrophobic on the inside with lots of movement. However, that was the least of my problems when I visited. This was the worst food I have eaten in a long long time, with the "not many people are vegetarian" delivered in a way that implied I was rather silly for having asked about their vegetarian menu. We had a table booked, but the waitress forgot to return to our table to take our order. So we sat and waited, whilst other patrons came in, were seated, and received their food before us. When I did receive the meal it was extremely poor quality and not even cooked. I received oily and soggy lukewarm chips, they were floppy with some being undercooked and oddly some being brown. It was as if there were undercooked chips that had been put in with some chips that had been sat in the fryer for a long time, and left to go cold. The vegetarian bean burger was cold when it arrived, cold in a way that said it hadn't been heated up properly. Again the response from staff was not great, like I was being a nuisance for taking cold food back to them. I then sat and watched the party I was with, eat and then finish their food, before my re-ordered burger came out hot. I am not sure if they rewarmed it, but the chips appeared to be the same from my original plate as they were soggier and colder than they were the first time. Unless they managed to replicate such poor quality food and they were fresh chips.

Third time lucky and lucky we were! Having lucked out on 2 other venues that lunchtime for different reasons, someone in another pub carpark heartily recommended The Avon Inn. And we were not disappointed. Everything was good from the warm welcome, lovely big table in a quietish room, extensive food choice, prompt service and delicious food. We will definitely be back!

We have just spent another week in the pods at the Avon Inn in Avonwick. Our third time of going there . The pods are super clean, very comfortable, well set out and all you need for a holiday. We had our meals in the pub every evening, which were good wholesome English food. Can't fault the staff Sue, Mark, Eda, Tabby, Emma, Liv and the chef Nick. Would highly recommend a holiday here. It's a great Gateway for visiting lots of places in Devon.

Lovely place stopped off on the way back from the beach. Really nice cheesy chips and the pizza cooked in the pizza oven outside was delicious. Definitely be visiting again.staff were nice and the toilets were clean.

I've never, in my 8 years of working in hotels and restaurants witnessed such an unhappy, grumpy workforce. Overheard a phone call from someone wanting to book a table fkr 3 on Saturday 9th september at 7pm, staff member said they were fully booked. I looked at my family puzzled as there were 5 empty tables around us. We were the only ones there. The chef came out a few times, looked incredibly dirty, scruffy and tired, I drwad Overheard another staff member say they had run out of Pizzas. When questioned by another staff member they were told they hadn't, just coukdnt be bothered. This is the very last time I spend over £110 on a meal at an establishment where they staff cannot he bothered. The "gammon" (thinly sliced ham) was so salty, was borderline inedible. Chips on the £23 steak were borderline mash. Kids meal came with no veg whatsoever. No salad, peas or beans. Eggs were done well, nice running told, but not drained enough so were still very oily. The food was below average. Staff attitude was abysmal, I will never ever step foot in the Avon again.

This place is spacious and fabulous for families with young children. The chips are like your granny’s home cooked chips - it definitely brought back nostalgia! Great garden and pizza place. My only quibble is the following: why can’t people order from the main menu in the garden rather than just the basket garden menu? Who makes these rules and why? It’s a bit bizarre and I haven’t seen it in other public houses before! Staff are awkward and can barely force a smile - the blonde young staff just don’t seem interested, don’t seem to enjoy their job - but why? Why don’t they enjoy their job? Makes you wonder whether the management / landlord is strict here - you definitely get that vibe from the staff? People feel the atmosphere, remember that.

We were camping nearby so cycled down. Nice bar staff. We ordered two plates of ham, egg and chips. Within seconds of it arriving I had stupidly managed to knock my wine glass over whereupon it shattered into my husband's dinner! The very pleasant waitresses and bar staff cleared it up in a flash and replaced the meal for free which we were really impressed with. Very nice, reasonably priced meal. Would return again and would certainly recommend. Thank you Avon Inn!

Cannot say enough good things about it. We were recommended by a friend, it didn't disappoint. Food was delicious and fresh, the beer fab, but most of all we were greeted by a bunch of ladies who were simply brilliant, funny, attentive, professional and so friendly. We will definitely be making this one of our regular visits. The place is charming, quirky and homely.... Well done guys

Just spent a second week in the pod at the Avonwick Arms. We loved it so much last year. Yet again, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The food at the pub was great, simple home cooked decent meals and very good portions. The pod was again, clean and tidy and had everything needed for a lovely stay. Just visited this place this afternoon for a few drinks and some food…..absolutely brilliant!! Drink and food are reasonably priced, beautiful beer garden (perfect for dogs)….very friendly staff and locals plus the food was amazing! Whats not to like? In fact going back tomorrow😁😁!!

Chips are AMAZING but in my opinion not that dog friendly. We visited Monday afternoon it was quiet, few locals about. Sat in beer garden and let dogs chase their balls in the corner away from others but was still asked to put them on the lead even though they didn’t bother to go near anyone else so left bit grumpy

We brought my brother, who has learning disability, for lunch and the staff, Emma, couldn’t have been more, helpful, respectful and kind. The carved ham, double egg and chips my husband had was enormous, my brother’s chilli con carne was presented beautifully and my coronation chicken sandwiches came with chips and side salad. We will be returning with our little dog very soon due to the welcome, service and wholesome food. Thank you

We suggested this pub as we had enjoyed a lovely meal in the garden a couple of years back . My Dad had enjoyed his curry and we had wolfed down two great burgers accompanied by a lovely salad and crisp fries . Sadly , the pub has been sold and the food has gone into decline . A pie and chips was not bad , my ham and chips was fine , a chicken dish with pasta was essentially a cremated piece of chicken on what looked like a pile of tinned spaghetti. The bean burger was a hazy shadow of the lovely burgers of the past . All the fries were over cooked and yet still managed to be soggy . Puddings were ok . There is too much choice out there for this standard of cooking to survive. Folks will just go elsewhere

Great garden! We were there to meet friends along with their well behaved dog! Beer was good, food was as expected and plenty of it. Staff were welcoming and pleasant what more would you want or need. Shall visit again and try the inside as opposed to the garden menu maybe. Definitely no complaints.

Weeks stay. We had such a great time staying in the lodges next to the pub. All staff were so friendly. The owners were very accommodating.

We popped into the Avon Inn on our way home from Paignton for some food. It's not our first visit (hint: the crab salad is nearly always off the menu! I think I have a hit rate of 1:5). Our latest visit we sat in the garden and had burgers (a regular beef burger and a chicken burger respectively). The chicken burger was ok but I was less than wowed by the beef burger. Only just cooked through and it wasn't very tasty. The chips were very average at best. the burgers were a reasonable size though so no niggle on that point. The Avon Inn is a totally forgettable experience, all except the screaming kids in the otherwise lovely garden. I mean that literally, not figuratively. While I am happy to enjoy a family friendly pub, do I really have to endure other peoples misbehaving brats? I just wanted a pleasant evening meal in the sunshine.

Went here to get something to eat and have a drink. You have to find a table in the garden and then go inside to get your drinks, order your food and pay ( not the COVID rules at all )ordered drinks and food but asked if we could have a poached egg instead of a fried egg to be told that the chef was to busy to do a poached egg ( probably couldn’t make one ). So when we didn’t want food the man behind the bar was not exactly nice about it. Would not recommend and certainly would not return.

We visited one night for an early evening meal as we have a 2 year old and a 9 month old and were staying nearby. We had booked a table which had been reserved for us but upon arrival my husband went in first and was told that was the bar bit and we had to go round to the eating side - when he asked how to get there the lady behind the bar just indicated roughly with a wave of her arm. We walked round the back of the pub through the beer garden and couldnt get in that way either. In the end it turned out to be just through a door in the original bar room - why she couldnt have just said that I dont know!Then we got shown to our table finally and there was no offer of a highchair for our 9 month old - we had to ask for one in the end after having her sat on my knee for a few minutes with no arrival or one or mention of any being available. The highchair itself was not the cleanest neither was the table we were sat at with dried on food that hadnt been wiped off properly from the last visitors.Service was equally as poor - the same lady made no effort whatsoever to interact with our children - I wasn't expecting full on conversation or anything but most servers at least smile at them or acknowledge them! If we didnt have young children and were a few hours off bedtime we would have got up and walked out and gone somewhere else where we were made to feel a bit more welcome. There was another lady behind the bar who rescued it somewhat when she came over and gave my little boy a new fork when he dropped his and got upset - she was lovely :)On the plus side the food was actually very nice. I had a burger, hubby had a steak and ale pie and my little boy had chicken nuggets - all of which were lovely and came with chippy chips. Similarly the chocolate fudge cake was really nice as well. The garden looked nice with a good play area and there was lovely inglenook at the front which would be a perfect table for a special meal.

This place is really nice! Came here for dinner 3 nights out of 4 on our trip to South Brent, as the food was really yummy and good portions! The prices are also reasonable and the surroundings are friendly and relaxed. A lovely big garden to sit out in too. Would definitely recommend!

We called in here and were glad the staff could accommodate us. The food was excellent. My steak & ale pie was up there with the best and the missus couldn't complain about her lasagne. The lounge was nicely decorated and the wooden tables and chairs looked good quality, thick and robust. The food prices were reasonable too. A great experience and highly recommended although you're best off booking ahead.

This is a great place to bring the family for an afternoon drink. The beer garden is a great setting – somewhere our little ones enjoy visiting. The pizza is ok, cooked in a pizza oven, nothing special but not bad to go with the beer. Looking forward to trying the main menu at some point

We didn't purposely intend to visit but as we found ourselves in the area we thought we'd pop in for a quick sandwich. We're so glad we did. The crab ciabatta was lovely with a nice side salad and home made chips. The ham in my husband's was also really good. Friendly staff and a massive garden. We'll definitely be back!

We have visited the Avonwick on various occasions now and always a family favourite. We are not local but love it there since popping in while passing it on a way home from friends.The staff are always friendly and welcoming. The beer garden is amazing as it is very family friendly with a play area that is perfect for kids. Parents can relax & enjoy a glass while their children are perfectly occupied. In Summer months they often have bands play & open the bar outside, it is a great atmosphere.The food is always lovely and well priced , would certainly reccomend.

We came by this place by total accident. We were staying in the Brixham area and our plan was to take advantage of the governments Eat Out to Help Out scheme in the locally McWetherspoons. However, it being August we found it impossible to park in Brixham so thought "lets try Totnes" where again we could not park.So we decided to keep driving until we found a country pub and stumbled across the Avon Inn.The food was excellent, proper homemade unlike most of the pubs we visited while in Torbay. Next time we are in the area we will make a point of coming here again. Prices were great too.

First time staying in Devon and due to Eat Out Help Out we were unable to find somewhere to eat as they were all fully booked. We stumbled across Avon Inn by mistake and we are so glad we did. The atmosphere was great, the waitresses were lovely and the food was amazing. We actually went twice as we loved it so much - proper chips!! Fresh food. Would not hesitate in recommending the steak

Visited here for lunch and was greeted by very friendly staff. We had the seafood cocktail served with tasty bread and it was lush! We had the 3 cheese ploughmans which was absolutely delicious! Beautifully served on a huge platter. No room for dessert unfortunately but will definitely visit again to try one. Would highly recommended this lovely Inn

I travel all over the country on my motorbike visiting many different places, pubs, restaurants etc I would like to point out how amazing the Avon inn was on my visit only two weeks ago the staff are extremely friendly and the facilities are absolutely fantastic the garden area is absolutely beautiful very spacious everything for the whole family, serving amazing home Cooked food, I would hard highly recommend a visit to this pub,please take time out of you the photographs below as it also has fabulous hanging baskets and flowers which is very nice to see in these dark times.

Okay food, terrible customer service from the waitresses, extremely unpleasant and rude to myself and my family. It’s a shame during busy periods they massively cut down on portion size. Also they claim to be on the 50% off government scheme, however when you turn up they tell you otherwise.

We arrived at lunch time on the 14th March. We were greeted in a very matter of fact and unwelcoming way by a tall bar maid with her hair tied up. She took our order as though we didn't exist. She didn't smile our ask how our meal was. However we would have given a 5 star rating for the food as it was one of the best meals we have had. You could not fault it. It was excellent The bar lady completely let down our experience as we were not made to feel welcome. We would have always stopped there any the future because the food was so good but you need to be made to feel welcome and not a nusiance.

Dropped in for an impromptu lunch on a lovely, clear Friday. Haven't been back to the Avon for around 10 years. What a transformation! Excellent Jail Ale, friendly bar staff and generous, home cooked food at sensible prices - much better quality and value than the two, bigger places closer to the A38. Couldn't find anything to criticise and will definitely be back soon

Six of us ate here last night, and all enjoyed a lovely evening in this great pub. The bar area is very cosy and full of atmosphere and the restaurante is beautifully decorated and very comfortable. We all had the Xmas menu and it was absolutely fantastic!!! Lots of moist turkey with all the traditional trimmings, and the beef was just perfect, an array of fresh vegetables and plenty of them. Finished off the meal with a pudding to die for, all served by lovely staff. Can't fault the place, well worth the short taxi journey back to Ivybridge!

Having visited the Avon Inn again , i felt it was time I left a review.The inn Has gone through many changes in the last 12 or so years and with the present team seems to have settled down into providing a friendly "local" pub with good food that in my opinion is better (and better value) than the turtley corn mill ,half a mile or so up the road. In the summer their garden is a good place to sit and is welcoming to children and dogs.If you are looking for anything apart from a straightforward eating and drinking and socialising experience then maybe this is not the place for you.I (and my dog) have always been made to feel welcome.I would recommend a visit.sincerely David Delfont.

The Avon inn possibly being my nearest pub, has been through many changes in the last 15+ years.I am pleased to say that it has settled down recently for 4 to 5 years the welcoming team have provided good food,drink and hospitality towards my young dog.The garden is great in good weather for both my dog and children .Their prices are reasonable and dare I say it the food is better than up the road at turtley corn mill.I would reccomend a visit to the avon inn if you like a good honest straightforward place to spend a bit of time.Sincerely...David Delfont

Stopped here for a meal whilst passing through. Lovely cosy pub with a logfire burning. Great choice of menu with very reasonable prices. Only downfall was the the young lady behind the bar was not the most friendly and not very welcoming.

Visited for lunch. Eda was on her own serving all customers; and the pub was full. Yet we felt that we were given full attention. The food was all home cooked. We will be back.

We had a delightful evening at this pub. All the food was excellent. The desert menu was also outstanding with something to please everybody and some appropriate for the season. The environment was comfortable and well set up. The staff were also polite and attentive. Easy parking also makes this pub rather better than some on a wet evening.

Had a nice lunch with my friend. The food was good and generous portions. Only down side was it was a long wait despite the pub not being busy.

Three of us went for lunch and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We were warmly welcomed and our drinks brought to the table for us after ordering them at the bar. It was a pleasant change to have our food order taken at the table, rather than having to do so at the bar. We all chose seafood dishes and they were all excellent. Although the chips were not crisp they were still very tasty. Nice fresh salad garnish too. The dessert we chose was absolutely heavenly. We shall definitely be visiting again soon!

The food and service here is definitely worth all five stars. Beautiful solid wood tables and chairs,and the most interesting and varied menu but not overwhelming just enough to suit everyone. Tasty and good value, and presented very well. Friendly and efficient staff. We look forward to more lunchtimes here,thankyou.

Took my Mum to stay with her friend, looking for somewhere to eat after we dropped her and came across this place... what a find, it was Brilliant... I had the Steak and Ale pie and the other half had the Fish and Chips.. both were superb, cooked to perfection and steaming hot... the presentation of the food was lovely, the staff were very friendly and the place is wonderfully clean... I can not recommend this place highly enough,, well worth a visit.. and all very reasonably priced...

I thought it would be a good idea to treat the staff to a night out after a very busy few weeks. Booked a table for 14 at The Avon Inn. Pre-ordered our food, so service was friendly and efficient. Everyone had a great meal and we all enjoyed ourselves.
