I’m an infrequent visitor to this pub (about three or four times a year when passing through on my narrowboat.) I love it. The staff (and locals) are friendly and welcoming. The beer is kept well. I was disappointed that they were not serving food on a Wednesday evening. Having said that they provided me with a takeaway menu for an Indian restaurant which they recommended and provided me with a plate to eat from. Smashing. Thanks - will see you next time I pass through.

Chose this place based on reviews and location. Booked online easily - room was £115 for the night (double en-suite). We were welcomed and shown to the room which was a good size with an excellent shower room. The fridge in the bedroom was well stocked with milk and orange juice and a continental breakfast included. The room was lovely and clean and set back from the road so very quiet. The reception area in the house was very cozy and inviting. We went to the bar and ordered food and drinks which were very good and enjoyed the 'open mike night'. There is parking available both in the pub and separately for staying guests. If you're looking for a quirky pub with a comfortable room to stay I'd highly recommend and I would definitely return.

As soon as I walked into The Anglers Retreat, the pub and it's staff gave me a 10 out of 10 feeling. My room was immaculate. The bar was very busy. The music evening in aid of MIND featuring The Roberts Family Band and a number of supporting artistes was outstanding and included a superb buffet. Several customers recommended Sunday Lunch to me but I was going home after breakfast. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

We stopped off at this pub and ordered cheese burger and chips. After a 40 minute wait (we had to ask where our food was) it turned up. The burger was tasteless and fatty and the chips weren’t particularly hot. We certainly won’t be visiting again.

This small pub has a nice large outside area. It’s quite noisy next to the busy B road and you have to watch out when crossing from the reservoir side. We enjoyed our drinks, apparently they are presently without a chef. The bar lady did not exactly welcome me; perhaps just a bad day.

Had a pleasant lunch in the beer garden. Food arrived quickly and was nice. Reasonably priced. I like there is a conservatory and a beer garden with shade if needed. An aviary for people to look at at a parrot inside. This is a small traditional pub, cosy and unspoilt.

Went today with my two boys on a bike ride. As soon as we walked in, it was clear we weren’t welcome. ‘Mature’ lady behind bar scowled at us & tone of voice was pretty appalling. I ordered 3 soft drinks and abandoned thoughts of lunch because of her unwelcome nature. Am local but won’t go back. Cafe round the corner gets my money from here on in.

Continental breakfast in room when I paid for cooked full English. Landlord's explanation was that his wife was on holiday. Poor choice, cornflakes loose in a container. When I requested a change, merely asking for bread and butter with a banana, only offered from bowl downstairs of properly rotten fruit. I don't eat croissants, but no alternatives given. Next morning, by 10.30, none of the staff/management were up, all still in bed. I had to leave the keys via a letterbox. What a place. Do not waste your time coming here.

I'm not very easily impressed and more likely to write a negative review about somewhere. However, when you stumble across a little gem and wonderful people, then you do need to acknowledge this. Firstly, really comfortable, clean twin room for me and my son (11) we were cycling The Grand Union canal for and from Birmingham Children's Hospital to Great Ormond Street and this was a perfect location for our second nights stay. When we arrived bear in mind England were playing in the Euros so they were busy, they looked after us, found somewhere safe uo store our bikes and showed us to our room. Knowing we were setting off early they had left everything in our room for a continental breakfast. Cereals, Milk, Yoghurt, Fruit, Croissants proper fruit juice......lovely. We got showered then we headed over to the pub for for a few beers (and pop) and a lovely evening meal. I apologise now because I didn't catch her name but the lady who seemed to be Managing the Angers Retreat took great interest and spoke to my son about what he was doing. A short while after she came over and said the owner had heard about my sons charity attempt to cycle 150 miles and therefore would not accept any money for our meals or drinks all night. Despite numerous efforts to pay something, they would not accept it. More than a fabulous location, food and hospitality they have given my boy a valuable life lesson....there are still great people left in the world. Thank you!!

Visited there today and found the service very very slow and the staff lacking in customer care and attention which was exasperated by the management/landlord of the pub lacking the skill and judgement to run and organise the smooth running of a relatively small pub serving pub grub!Ruined our day out!!! Which was a shame as the food, when after nearly 90 minutes waiting and after several prompts to staff, turned up and was typical pub grub which we were expecting!

We waited for 30 minutes before we managed to get the attention of a member of staff to order some drinks.Otherwise I think the person would have walked past us. Staff came around occasionally but we weren’t smiled at or acknowledged or asked if we were ok.So disappointed- just felt invisible.A couple wha arrived after us got up and left after 15 or 20 minutes. That was our first and probably last visit. Hopefully the management will take this on board as constructive criticism and take steps to improve their customer service.

There are several pubs within walking distance of this one using the canal system as a means to get around and a good days walk can be had visiting several of them (we managed a leisurely five) including this one. Larger than others in the area it has a good sized car park and is easy to find from either canal or road. All Covid measures in place including screens at the bar, a gazebo for those mixing outside and some excellent food and real ale served by friendly welcoming staff. Once lockdown is over, well worth finding .

Good anti covid measures in place. One way in and a different way out . Screens at bar. Menu at bar. Eat inside or in better weather outside on the patio or nice garden ( complete with aviary and pond just outside the fence). It was a warm day and we sat on the patio for shade, unfortunately a very loud man at the next table made us move into the garden. Not the pubs fault of course. Busy in the garden with families but was all socially distanced., apart from kids running up to pat our dog. Dogs are allowed on leads. Sunday roast was ok, not the best I have had but edible, few burnt bits., other meals were nice enough for the rest of the group. It all arrived quite quickly. Staff were friendly enough. Right opposite the canal for a nice walk afterwards . All in all a nice meal out and quite reasonably priced. Nice pub with character. Will try eating inside next time.

My husband and I visited The Anglers today for lunch. We have never eaten there before but have been quite a few times for a drink and have always found it to be very pleasant. We ate there for the first time today and were very disappointed. Although the place was not particularly busy we had to wait nearly an hour for our food. We had both ordered cod and chips which arrived so grossly overcooked that I couldn’t even cut my batter! I finally broke through to find the fish dry, flaky and nearly non-existent. It was unpalatable. However the chips and mushy peas were good!No refund of any sort was given as the food was paid for upon ordering. We will not be eating there again.

I visited this pleasant, business-like country pub between Christmas and New Year. I had been walking around the adjacent reservoirs in the morning and returned to the village at 12:30, so lunch was in order. The pub was very busy. It has a fair sized dining area in the lounge bar and a small conservatory extension. All of this was pretty full. I sat in the tiny public bar, next to the very entertaining African Grey parrot.Although, clearly, food is a big part of this pub's business, it manages to retain a country pub atmosphere. It is pleasant and convivial without being twee or gentrified. The 'proper pub' credentials are boosted by a good range of well kept beers at the bar, including some from the excellent Tring Brewery, just up the road.Service was friendly and brisk.Wanting an antidote to xmas snacking, I ordered pan fried lamb's liver, crisp bacon, onion gravy, mash and a selection of fresh veg. Nothing very exotic you might think but it was excellent, with every component cooked to perfection. Portions were generous.Looking at the menu, I'd say it's largely that kind of food. Nothing elaborate but good, hearty, healthy pub meals. Judging by the popularity of the place, I would imagine it's all cooked to a pretty good standard, too.For me, at that moment, that meal, washed down with a pint of warming Santa's Little Helper was spot on and I thoroughly enjoyed an hour soaking up the amiable, bustling atmosphere.Prices are very reasonable, too.Highly recommended.

Popped into this pub for lunch while doing part of a canal walk. Have been a couple of times before so we knew it was a friendly, relaxed place with good pub food. This Saturday it was very busy; there was a large group booked in for lunch and an unexpected 'chip crisis' threatened to delay proceedings. Despite all this, the staff maintained their smiling, friendly manner throughout. It was lovely to see such genuine hard work at play... and some quick thinking happily solved the chip problem. Looking for a pre-walk pub lunch, we were told there was a half-hour wait. A wait, that is, before we could place an order as the kitchen was backed up. So bought drinks and read the papers in the sun. After 30 mins we were told there was still an indefinite wait before we could order, to which there is only one response: place loses business. Funny thing is that the place was half-empty and very few people were eating, so it's anyone's guess what was going on in the kitchen

Needed a hostelry suited to rewarding our efforts striding the reservoirs (not to mention building up our step-count!) .. the Anglers got our vote and didn’t disappoint. It’s a free house offering a good selection of real ales (Timothy Taylor did the trick for me), service prompt. Quite a small bar area but it’s a proper pub and the buzz of happy patrons hits you the moment you enter. We booked and as it was a sunny & warm day (Easter Sunday in fact) chose to sit outside in the spacious eating area. The fish & chips (3) and scampi (1) went down a treat ..minimal waiting time, staff polite and efficient, decent size car park. Couldn't fault.

Quite busy for a Tuesday which is always a good sign and after perusing the menu we settled for a all day breakfast and a beer battered haddock and chips. The pub itself is small and traditional looking from the outside with a spacious and cosy contemporary interior. Roaring open fire warned the cockles and we sample a delicious pint of ale served by a smiley French lady. The all day breakfast had 2 plump sausages crispy bacon chips beans and a perfectly fried egg. My friend had haddock and it was served crispy and flaky with wonderfully cooked chips and mushy peas. 4 of us visited the pub today for roast dinner we had the lamb, beef and pork. The food was amazing, the veg was great, roast potatoes amazing. I had so much perfectly cooked lamb I couldn’t eat it all. The staff were really friendly as well. A great little pub - good beer on draught - Timothy Taylor. Definitely recommend booking for Sunday Roast - thank you

My mum and I went here for Sunday lunch. The staff were so accommodating to the point where the manager parked her car to save a space for my elderly mother so she could easily walk to the pub. The staff were so friendly and the food was exquisite. The roast pork was to die for and if you love crackling as much as me, you’re in for a treat. It was so nice to see a family & pet welcoming place to eat and I waddled our as I was so stuffed due to the really good apple pie! I totally recommend this place

We stayed here for a night’s bed and breakfast while helping some friends move a canal boat through the Chilterns. Pauline went out of her way to help us and our friends during our brief stay. Our bedroom and ensuite was spotless and comfortable. Would highly recommend as a bed and breakfast.

Took our 3 Grandsons Thursday 30th August. All our meals were very tasty and well presented and empty plates shows that they enjoyed their meal and ice creams for afters. They loved talking to Rosie the parrot and getting her to dance. The garden has an aviary and outside eating. Thank you all for a relaxed meal with the children

Before going for a walk around the Tring reservoirs we had planned for a lunch at The Anglers Retreat. Having seen the negative reviews for Grand Junction Arms, we chose this place hoping for a good time.

Four of us met for lunch at this pub. We had a pre-booked table, although the pub wasn't too busy.

Have eaten at the Anglers Retreat several times over the past year and every time the food has been cooked very well, the service has been excellent (admittedly as other reviewers have said not always super fast - but then if you want fast food go to MacDonalds) and in terms of value for money in my opinion it cannot be beaten.

We had drinks and lunch at the Anglers Retreat today after a 9 mile canal walk in 30°! A very friendly pub, they happily gave me a pint of water, which I quickly followed with a pint of the Stowford Press Summer fruits cider, which was delicious. My husband enjoyed the Timothy Taylor Landlord beer. We ate lunch, which was served quickly and was really good. I had the vegetable lasagne with salad and chips and my husband had a burger with chips and salad. A huge amount of food too. We sat outside in the garden which was very relaxing after our long hot walk. The bar staff and serving staff were all polite, efficient and friendly. We'll definitely be going there again!

We had not visited this pub for several months and when we did so we were delighted to see the improvements. Lovely tiled floors , carpeted in some areas and looking clean and fresh.

We visited this pub for an early dinner. Myself and my partner ordered a steak. We were close to the kitchen when ordering and when the chef found out he had to cook steak he was effing and blinding. We went and sat outside, it was okay, nothing special. When our food arrived the waitress apologised for the chef's language. We started eating and i must say to food was pretty terrible. The steak was chewy and overcooked (I asked for medium rare). Overall, it was an awful experience and we defiantly won't be back.

A cracking little pub serving food and a decent range of beers situated a 50 metres walk from the canal and the reservoir.

Pure Elizabethan splendour. The girls and I took a delightful spring ecoeetreat to this gorgeous historical gastro pub to enjoy the town. 16 years and still the best bloomin cooked brekkie in Tring - probably all of Hertfordshire if I think about it wholeheartedly. Kinda love the goofy little sauces - Elizabethan meets modern.

After a busy morning of shopping, we decided to pop in to the anglers. We were greeted by friendly staff and the owners. Food was very good and served quickly. A great garden to sit and enjoy a pint after a walk around the reservoirs, I would highly recommend visiting.

This truly is an interesting place in the area, with all the eateries and places to see this one has it all! Cosy gastro pub with fireplace and fishing memorabilia, veranda stile covered sitting area, big garden with an old tractor to sit on in it, duck pond, aviary with a few minor parrots, resident African grey Rosie, attentive staff, free parking near the pay and display reservoir parking lot, pretty walks around it, lock and canal to see and plenty of space for a nice picnic. So whatever you are looking for in the area I believe this place had it all. And - who'd know, this is also a birthplace of Paralympics!

Food took over 2 hrs to arrive and to be honest was average. Meat pie gravy glutinous. They simply cannot cope when busy but keep taking orders and then the food does not arrive in order so you see group after group get your food first.

Bit of a strange one because although the pub was very accommodating they had no draught beers because there was a problem with the pumps.Having said that the barman was very helpful and pleasant serving bottle 🍺🤨beer

Called in here after spending the morning walking in Stowe gardens. A bit later than intended and not researched their menu first. Boy wasnt we surprized. The pies were delicious. Choice of chips and veg or new potatoes and veg. Both home cooked and superb. Will definitely visit again.

The cafe is in a nice spot with plenty of shade if needed outside. Bit on the pricey side, but that's Wendover I guess. I had to go in and order as I think they forgot about us. Not a big issue though. The food took a little while to arrive, just a sandwich with salad and crisps. It was nicely presented and tasted fine. Young staff served us, they were friendly. Had a milkshake that was nice. Prices start from around £7 for a sandwich so it's a treat now and then. It was nice and relaxing outside, there's a toilet inside if needed. Overall a pleasant enough lunch.

Lovely building, great food. Went for a roast lunch, and get a lot for the money. Nice old building, low ceilings - a lot of character! Staff friendly and attentive.
