Stopped by chance on the way to Thatcham it was amazing fabulous place, staff and food was delicious and very reasonable

We booked the Angel for a wake. It's perfectly located (4 minutes from the Crematorium.) Everyone loved the pub, the open fire and the buffet. Andy and the team delivered on everything I asked for and provided some fantastic vegan options.

For a birthday celebration my friend and I went for lunch here as a change from our usual venue. My starter came and the bread was so burnt it was charcoaled on the underside (sneaky hidden I feel - cannot believe anyone thought it was ok to serve like that!!), when I tried to get the waitresses attention it took three attempts. They all raced about with an agenda NOT to offer an attentive service. No one gives you eye contact. I was greeted with hostility when I tried to be jokey about it being a little too burnt for my pallet - it was black. It was replaced with an untoasted piece of bread - Hohum! My friend’s starter, clearly heated in the microwave, meant the pasty was like trying to chew soggy cardboard. Pictures of the mains attached, the served plated carvery; the gammon was chewy with a lot of fat on the edge. Both Gammon and turkey were cold. The gravy thin and luke warm. The Yorkshire looked promising but was soggy. The roast potatoes were reheated (the inside potato had come away from the outer. The veg was two over cooked carrot battens, two Brussels (cooked perfectly) and a piece of crunchy parsnip. One tiny ball of stuffing which was rock hard. Aside the Brussels all very disappointing - worth £14.95 for two perfectly cooked Brussels? Good value? You decide. My friend’s meal was the pork belly or should I say pork fat with about a strip of actual meat about a 1cm along the length of the fat. The fat hadn’t been rendered and clearly not prepared by an experienced chef - the photos are of just the fat. Just looking at the lump of fat on my friend’s plate ruined any appetite for both of us! Her roasted root veg comprised of one parsnip, a few pieces of carrot and the mash was dry and lumpy. Clearly in the photos you can see it’s not mash. Did we try desert - we couldn’t face it. We mentioned the poor quality of the food when trying to pay, which took 25 minutes, the food so vile we moved to the bar lied about a taxi coming so we could get fresh air and rid our nostrils of the grim fat smell. The Waitress was rather unconcerned about the poor quality of food & went to speak with the manager, he looked over at us. No apology or offer to make anything right about the food, but the cost of the pork belly ‘fat’ was removed from the bill together with the charcoaled bread. Would I eat here again? No. We are blessed with so many other local restaurants in West Berks all which great you with good vibes, attentive staff and fabulous food.

We held a small wake at the Angel today and were all so impressed. We were given the private room which was ready laid out with beautiful vintage china and pots of tea. The afternoon tea style buffet was great & really delicious. Thank you so much to the staff that kindly looked after us (17th Dec am) we’d highly recommend you to anyone looking for a venue for a wake following a cremation at West Berks Crem.

It's been a while since I had a good pub grub, and landed here on an off chance, and it did not disappoint! Will defo come back again, prob for the sunday carvery.

Went for a work Christmas dinner. Service was fast and efficient, they'd taken the names of the diners from the booking so people who had forgotten what they pre-ordered got their meal with no fuss. The food was good quality and nicely presented, decent portion sizes. Good pint of Guinness too, nice domeage. Good job Angel crew

I eat at The Angel when in the area on business. Food is always excellent and the service outstanding. Great value for money too.

Disappointed with carvery, particularly roast potatoes and parsnips. No gluten free gravy and no gf pudding option. Service was good as was the live singer.

Very average. Friday night you’d expect it to be a bit lively, but it wasn’t, made worse by noise of children in the main bar.

Lovely vibes and chicken Caesar salad is simply fresh and awesome with anchovies. Would definitely back for another meal.

Dropped in here for a drink as I passed through en route to a concert at nearby Douai Abbey. The staff were very helpful and the wine was excellent. I would definitely come here again if I was nearby, and would recommend this place to others also.

Been coming to the Angel for years, birthday meals and celebrations. Roast Sundays! Absolutely fantastic, every meal we've had here has always been 10/10. Fantastic customer service too!

Very busy so we had a long wait for food which was not the best

Sunday lunch was £14.50, and it was a self serve carvery. I had the beef, it was very tender and tasty and there was plenty to eat but it was almost cold. A limited choice of veg but quite enough for us, again though it was not very hot. A lovely place to eat with very pleasant staff. We enjoyed our meal even though it could have been hotter.

Took my mum here for dinner a few weeks ago. Had never been here before but I'd definitely go again. Staff were absolutely lovely, great service and the food was lovely as well. Would definitely recommend visiting.

After hearing a lot about the food at this pub, having only been here briefly once in the past for a few drinks I decided to finally pop in for some food, with similar menu prices to other pubs I was not expecting anything special but boy was I wrong, I ordered the Bacon & Cheese potato skins, BBQ chicken strips and the Salt & Pepper chips with curry sauce, this was 2 starters and a side dish but when it arrived looked as though I’d been given 3 meals, all of it was absolutely amazing, well worth the price and I will definitely be going here again, for all 3 of these it was just over £20. The service was lovely, the bartenders extremely helpful and the waitress also extremely helpful and attentive, this is definitely somewhere you need to go if you haven’t already or even if you’re just passing through.

I was seated and served quickly, the staff are on point. The meal I had, Chicken and Mushroom Linguine was flippin' lovely.

Unfortunately wasn't the best meal I have had here. Had the nachos to start, way to much cheese sauce made it soggy. Then I had the hunters chicken, again way to much cheese on it. Two different cheeses. Onion rings weren't cooked enough. My husband had a roast dinner and that was excellent. Prices have risen quite a bit too. The food was a decent sized portion.

Este pub en algún momento fue una gran relación calidad-precio, pero lamentablemente ya no, la comida que pedimos fue por mucho la peor comida que he tenido en mucho tiempo, lo que más lamento es que pagué la cuenta, pedimos curry para todos porque el tipo con la cabeza calva que creo que es el gerente lo recomendó diciéndonos que cocina la mayor parte del curry él mismo, fue absolutamente espantoso, las comidas no se pudieron comer, me quejé con la camarera joven que estuvo de acuerdo conmigo, luego me quejé con el gerente que me respondió incansablemente que no me preocupara te cocinaré una mejor la próxima vez con una sonrisa en la cara, mi familia y amigos han usado este pub muchas veces a lo largo de los años, pero yo por mi parte ya no lo usaré, y muchas personas con las que he hablado han dicho lo mismo, así que no soy solo yo, esta es la primera vez que escribo para quejarme de la comida que he pedido en un pub, pero creo que en esta ocasión es necesario.

Esperó más de una hora para la comida, entonces solo dos de las comidas llegaron. Otros 25 minutos de espera para la tercera comida. Comida no buena, pollo seco, vientre de cerdo no crujiente y servido en un tazón con verduras pourec por encima. No volverá

I recently booked the function room at the Angel for a Diamond Anniversary party and I cannot recommend it enough. The staff were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble, it felt so relaxing and stress free. The room is tastefully decorated and was perfect for 40 people, the food was wonderful and all the guests had a really lovely time. I would highly recommend the Angel to anyone.

Asqueroso fue para el asado del domingo pidió nuestras bebidas y comida - 15 minutos después no hay bebidas. El personal de pie alrededor sin hacer nada miserable como si estuvieran obligados a estar allí! Dijo que no nos íbamos a dejar disculpas ni nada. Odio hacer malas críticas, pero fueron tan groseros!

Normally one of our family favourite pubs! But really really annoyed today as we called in to ask if we can have table for food and drinks and were told yes we can. Sat down were given the food menus and then we went to order, we were told apparently managers decision not to take food order. When we told them we called 15 mins before coming in, manager just shrugged his shoulders! Will never be going there again.

Booked a table of 8 last Sunday to celebrate my in-laws 60th wedding anniversary. It took approximately 40mins to get the starter then another long wait until we were told it was our turn for the carvery. When we arrived at the counter we were all really shocked! There was a small piece of gammon & about 4 slices of beef in gravy (that looked like a school dinner) No veg, no roast spuds & a few soggy Yorkshire puddings! Needless to say we didn’t stay. We later found out that they were a fryer down, no one had told us, in fact we had to keep asking why we were waiting so long! My fish n chips eventually arrived & it was so greasy I couldn’t eat it! What a massive let down for the pub but more importantly my mum & dad in law. Totally disgusted.

Food was lovely however service to our table was lacking. Over an hour waiting for service, believe they misplaced our order. Sent out some cauliflower cheese to compensate.

Here for a private party. Nice little place, seems to be larger than first impressions. Car park to the rear and plenty of open garden space and marquee covered outdoor eating.

Went as family group of 6 pm 21 April. Was busy but obviously not catered for people. Food fine and special mention to the great guy carving the meat on carvery very friendly and polite credit to him. Rest of staff fine tho needed more training I think. We left after waiting a very long time for any food to arrive and after ordering desserts and waiting 45 mins gave up and paid and left. Seems no one like a manager overseeing. Had to wait to get 4 roasts as apparently waiting for more Yorkshire's - which didn't appear so 2 of party had almost finished mains before we started. Shame as nice place And previous visit was fine. Singer not needed either too loud. Please sort out service

Gone down hill. Waited 45 mins for starters then about same for mains was told that we would be told when two who weren't having carvery meals were ready so we could get carvery, didn't happen. Went to get carvery were told needed more Yorkshire's they never appeared. Staff although lovely didn't seemed trained properly no one checked why we wAited so long , ordered desserts and gave up waiting after 45 mins, it was busy initially didn't seem any real management . Shame as previous visit very good and food fine . Was a birthday treat so a let down. May be an off day

We ordered starters and some menu dinners and a few carvery roasts. We were told that they would let us know when the menu mains were nearly ready so those who were having carvery could get it at the same time. 4 Starters took almost an hour to come out. Later the two menu meals arrived without notice. Those having carvery were then turned away at the counter because there wasn't enough food. When we were recalled, there was a single Yorkshire pudding left, some empty trays on the hotplate and no gravy etc. After the meal we ordered 4 desserts which still hadn't arrived over 40 mins later - so we cancelled them and left more than a little disappointed with the whole visit We had high hopes after seeing all the good reviews but sadly we can't agree with them. The food we did get was largely nice. Ignoring simple things like burnt ciabatta with the soup - which should never have left the kitchen.

We found this dog friendly pub by accident after our Hotel Chef wasn’t available for the evening meal. Found the staff friendly and very helpful. The Squid starter was excellent and the Sirloin Steak was cooked to perfection. Whilst my wife could have Cheese Soufflé starter, the Belly Pork more than made up for that. Two satisfied and very full customers. Maybe lunch tomorrow before setting off for home? 😂👍😎

Very busy when we visited, but the staff were very friendly and made us aware that the food may take longer. Fabulous food!!

Haven't visited the pub in many years but it made a convenient meeting point for a group of friends. Lovely welcome, good food and service. We'll be back.

I was visiting from out of town and found this place by chance and so glad I did as someone who travels regularly I have to say I received some of the best customer service I’ve ever encountered from a young lady with brown hair and a beige cardigan unfortunately I didn’t catch her name, she went above and beyond to deliver exemplary service and is an absolute credit to the angel if only there was more staff that took pride in there jobs and people skills like she did I would definitively recommend stopping by if your in the area.

Andy and the team went above and beyond with great customer service skills. The team were friendly, respectful, and polite. We had soft music playing in the background and a large selection of hot and cold buffet food, desserts, cakes, etc. The Angel is clean, tidy, and tastfully decorated and great for all ages, couples, parties etc Thank you for all your hard work today!

Attended a wake here but food and service excellent

Visited on mother's day (10/03/24) , greeted with complimentary glass of prosecco for both me and my mum . We all had the carvery , each of us having a different meat (gammon, turkey and beef) with mam asking for a child's portion as she doesn't eat as much as she used to; well the only difference (apart from being almost half the price) was that she got two slices of meat and we had three . Great choice of veg , all beautifully cooked al dente and not soggy / overcooked. Staff were extremely pleasant and helpful . Definitely value for money . It was my first visit and , hopefully, not my last

Massive fall from grace here, not sure if there’s new ownership but definitely a change of attitude. Prices have increased, quality of food has gone down. Only time in my life I’ve had to send back a dish, as the curry special was horrendous (incredibly tough chicken and a block of rice that you could stab with your fork and lift up the whole lot.) not an overstatement to say a microwaveable curry from a supermarket would have been better. I was up all night, and everyone else had a different dish and was fine so seems there’s more to the curry than just being bad! Besides one waitress, the rest of the staff were rude throughout too. Not typical of The Angel we’ve known previously! The Angel used to be our favourite place to go, but I’d now not recommend after our experience last night.

Lovely friendly local pub, so nice to move to an area with such a great pub, excellent food with great choice, staff always happy and nice family atmosphere.

Very cosy in winter with open fires, choice of real ales. Usually, prompt and cheerful bar service. Ample parking. Haven't eaten here fir a couple of years but it's usually busy.

Lovely pub. Food was tasty but dont waste your money on the Starters they are tiny..one thin kofta kebab sausage cut into 4 with half a small pitta bread ...

Table for 6 for a valentines day lunch. Super welcome and freindly staff. 5 meals all good, fish and chips, ceaser salad, hunters chicken, ham egg and chips and a spicy bean burger. Unfortunately the lamb shoulder was not so good but staff offered a replacement and took the item off the bill. We were very impressed. Plenty of parking and a real fire.

Deservedly popular for the excellent Guinness they serve. Decent playlist. Clean, stylish, easy going, good staff, good menu good snug with proper fire.

Very nice little pub just down the road from the hotel we stayed so we gave it a try and left very impressed. Good good and friendly team.

Held my Dad's 80th Birthday Party at The Angel just after Christmas and it was fantastic! The Staff were outstanding, couldn't do enough for us from start to finish. Plenty of tables and room for everyone to sit. We had the luxury buffet which was very reasonable and the food was great quality. Several of the guests contacted us the next day to say what a wonderful time they had had! Thank you Andy and the team!

We were a big party (18) we pre ordered, no problem with that. However, the food was ordinary a lot was bought in not made in house. A shame considering the bill was fairly high.

The Jazz night was absolutely brilliant. We go each month. I recommend it to everyone

We had booked a table for two but were met with surprise when we turned up. The staff were slow to take our orders even though the pub was quiet in the afternoon.

We went as a family for the curry special night on the Thursday. We were very much looked after by the whole staff who took pleasure in making us feel welcome. First time I had been there and will defo go again. The 4 course curry special was so nice! Spicy as expected!!!!! Have been there again since for a drink and was served without issue by the lush fireplace. Nice and warm! Will be rocking up there again soon!

Most important, staff, locals, atmosphere! ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ ✔️ Great landlord and staff that know how to run a pub that you want to go back to! 😁🥳

Just wanted a simple veggie roast with all the trimmings. Received a pile of either Aunt Bessie's or Brake Bros. potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Big pile of al dente veg, which wasn't an issue. Tasty beef gravy....and a freezing cold nut roast. I had put a lot of English mustard on the nut roast before I realised it was cold. It was so chilled that I panicked and spat it back on the plate. When I brought it to the serving staff's attention they apologized and took it back to the kitchen. It came back a few minutes later, with congealed mustard and the food that I'd spat out, now piping hot. I felt so sick that I refused anything else on the menu, having been told it would take a long time to prepare another nut roast. Come on guys! I've been coming here for years. You know you can do better.

The menu looked great, however sadly my chosen food item wasn't available on the day. I order a different item instead which was delicious!

Had an absolutely amazing time with the Mrs both our meals were spot on couldn't fault one bit we also shared the sticky toffee pudding and was amazing would highly recommend to anyone wanting a hearty pub meal and the prices are more than generous ....Will definitely be back soon 😀 the service was really friendly and felt welcomed as soon as we walked in

Just been for Sunday lunch. The food was delicious, the staff were really lovely and there was a lovely atmosphere. We had the carvery and desserts.

A superb dinner at sensible prices unlike the nearby Rowbarge where I went last night. Excellent spicy bruschetta. Sumptuous roast beef with trimmings and tastily presented ice cream. Good hit coffee too. The Rowbarge has a river alongside while the Angel only has the A4 but there’s no doubt where to eat!

Dropped by for a Sunday carvery, despite the rain, it was still a pleasant afternoon, we sat out back under a large gazebo style shelter as it was still warm out. Lunch was a carvery style affair and was also cooked to perfection (for me), definitely would go again.

Attended a wake. Provided catering. Fill rolls, quiche, sausage rolls, chips, samosa, and more. Plenty of tea and coffee. Staff friendly and sympathetic to our needs

Excellent meal, lovely staff, great prices. If I had to make a tiny weeny complaint it would be it wasn’t hot but that’s just me. The gravy was to die for!!

Staff were very helpful and the food was fantastic.

Generally staff wasn't welcoming and dare I say it seemed aggressive when I came in for a drink after work and just wanted to check out the place. The mood seemed down and depressive I the pub and resy. it's a shame as I remember a time when it wasn't so. Generous serving of roasted peanuts with your drink though, almost a meal.
