Worst experience - staff was super rude, ordered food but got no food, & racist. Never coming back!

Leo and Frankie made our evening! Both so lovely and attentive, cocktails were delicious and they both made us feel very welcome and looked after! Big thank you to them both :)

Enjoyable Modern Restaurant & Bar in the Heart of Historic Newbury!

Recently moved in nearby and tried it out. Decent choice on the menu and very reasonably priced. Can recommend the Ribeye and the Chicken schnitzel. Will definitely return to try their homemade chicken Kiev. Outstanding service from Paolo, very friendly and looked after us well - even gave us a complimentary glass of prosecco with our dessert!

We visited for the first time and very much enjoyed ourselves. The food was very good with very generous portions sizes! We were extremely well looked after by Paolo who was attentive and friendly. We will definitely go back again.

Great service, with friendly and attentive staff. Food was reasonable, decent proportions and served hot. Menu could be a little more inspiring and would be nice to see a few healthier options.

During the Eat out to help out period, my husband and I visited the Oxford Street Kitchen at The Chequers Hotel. I won't lie, we only booked it as we couldn't get booked into the places we'd normally dine at. But I am so glad we did. Everything from the Covid precautions and staff service to the food and quality was 5 star. Being a hotel, I'd never thought to just visit here to eat, but I am so glad we did. Absolutely top notch and another venue to add to our local places to dine.

Our server paolo was very welcoming and very helpful and could not do enough for us to make our evening special. The ribs was the best we have ever had. Thank you all. We have had a lovely night.

Great service. Good food . The staff where friendly but didn't crowd you by coming over while you are trying to eat. which was nice. The food was really good but the portions were a little small. Would definitely go there again

Decided to go to Oxford St Kitchen & Bar for first post-lockdown meal and it was excellent. Food was delicious and service by Philypps was spot on - and we also had 20% off - Brilliant!! (Social distancing was also well observed) - definitely be coming again very soon.

The food was nice when we actually got it because they cept getting our order wrong so I’m not very impressed w how much it was

Afternoon tea was a bit disappointing as one of our party was a vegetarian. They said they had no knowledge despite being told and they rustled up cheese and pickle sandwiches. The cakes were not very nice and overall not worth the money.

The only good point I can say about our meal was that the servers were lovely. Otherwise, it was a horrible experience. I have recently been put on a low FODMAP diet which means no onion, garlic or gluten (amongst other things). Firstly, I was told I could not have the steak because it was pre-marinated. I had to ask for help with alternatives, at which I was told there were a few where I could "pick out the onion" and given a couple of options. I chose the pork but asked to swap the sweet potato for white potato. I was told I could do that but it would cost extra because "one is a puree and one is a mash" (I was not offered any other alternative, and I'm glad I did get the mash because otherwise it would have been a ridiculously small meal, despite costing £18.95!) When the meal finally arrived, it was covered in gravy which when I checked I was told "it has garlic in it but because we told the waiter it wasn't an allergy they put the gravy on anyway" (I hadn't actually been asked if it was an allergy or an intolerance, but in any case this shows a complete lack of care for customer needs by kitchen staff, as they apparently deliberately put on my plate something I'd said I could not eat). By this point I was stunned at the awful attitude of the kitchen but was very hungry so could only accept a new portion which was obviously brought out once my partner had finished their food. The waiting staff were very apologetic and offered a free drink, but this could not make up for the terrible experience. Definitely would not visit again, and would warn anyone with any form of intolerance to stay well away from here!

I visited with some friends for a catch up dinner last month. The interior is lovely which gave me high hopes however we had a poor experience. There was only one person on the bar and we waited for ages for our order to be taken and then had another long wait for the drinks to arrive. The menu looked great albeit a little pricey so we were expecting good things. I opted for the honey glazed pork chop priced at £17.95. It was small, lacked flavour, there was definitely no honey glaze. The sides were dismal, it came with a small portion of frozen chips, a tomato and a mushroom, both of which were really small. My friends meals all looked equally small and underwhelming. One of my friends was accidentally hit in the mouth by her plate as the waiter served her which clearly hurt but instead of apologising he awkwardly scurried off. I wouldn't be so offended by the food if it wasn't high end prices as it's no better than a Wetherspoons meal. I would have been happy if I'd have paid Wetherspoons prices. It could be a lovely place for a meal and drinks if there were more staff on hand and the standard of food was significantly improved.

We had dinner here and found this a nice and newly decorated place. There is a mostly traditional menu but with a few tempting alternatives. The service eas warm and friendly and we did not wait too long for the food to arrive. The portions were on the small side and the falafel meal was not as you would find it in the Middle East.

We thought we would pop in for a light lunch one Saturday. Firstly, it seems to have 2 entrances, we were a bit confused as to which one to use. We tried both. No one around. No one to greet you, no one working, no one serving. I think the second entrance we tried was the hotel reception. Again, no one around. We saw one customer in the lobby on a laptop. Someone has obviously ploughed a lot of money into this place but to have absolutely no staff at all on a Saturday lunch time is unforgivable. We gave up and walked out.

A fairly small menu but whatever you choose you will not fault. All food was tasty and very original.

Visited this restaurant with a group of friends yesterday and we had a great time. The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. The waitresses Hannah and Julia really went out there way to make us feel welcome and told us about some events coming up. The restaurant has recently been refurbished with nice decor and they have a great menu. i would happily visit again.

Oh dear. First the positives newly refurbished bright, fresh, comfortable seating, happyAttentive staff. Can take a wheel chair. Sunday late lunch holiday weekend and we were the only four in. Food 2 went for pork with mixed vegetables roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. 1 dish was fine the other ok but the Yorkshire puddings over cooked they crumbled when cut. I had beef, thick slice had to ask for a steak knife not great and our vegetarian had limited selection who went for the vegetables and a side of cauliflower cheese with the over cooked Yorkshire. Being the only patrons we expected so much more.

I was there several times, but I have mixed feelings. The food was great few times, but there was once when it was not the best. The service was ok, but not a high quality. Sometimes I had to wait long. But overall I can say the stuff was friendly.

Not been here before, but booked for 5 of us. Interior is very nicely done. Staff were very pleasant and efficient. Food was very good, I had the ribs which were excellent.The Thai curry was also very tasty. Overall a very good dinner.

I ate there with a group of friends and had a lovely meal with excellent service. Good choice of veggie and some vegan (but not for dessert!).

Six of us went for dinner midweek, giving the place another chance after a disappointing first visit in November last year. I am so glad we did, as the food - three courses for all of us - was delicious (very good new menu) and the service warm and efficient. It is a shame that its position means the restaurant doesn't attract 'passing trade,' as it felt a little empty, but maybe at weekends it's a bit busier. It deserves to be, based on our recent experience, and we all said that we would go back again.

Superb site to visit and because of the snow incident I was stranded but yet he young supervisor dan was very helpful and was a knight in shining armour. Crucial member of the team

I’ve booked a table here for my friends 60th birthday as a treat . How disappointing I know a lot of money has been spent making this restaurant look a tad special and I think it does. What a disappointment, the staff were very nice but certainly not trained to the standard I was expecting ( and cheap crumpled suits/ uniform ).The tables were bare apart from cheap salt and pepper pots a glass and a knife and fork . The bill came to over £80 for two people including one alcoholic beverage coffee and water.The food was nothing more than okay and we had to send back the potato chips as they were old and tasted Like they’ve been hanging around in the kitchen for a couple of days This was a special occasion, but nothing is special about this venue it lacks atmosphere and as a new venue in town it needs to up its game in my opinion,i will not be returning and will not recommend .

We visited on Friday for a catch-up drink and really enjoyed the surroundings. The wine was nice, the setting was comfortable and the staff really friendly, particularly Jay who was really approachable and chatty. We'll be back!

We called in here for a drink, and perhaps some lunch, today. We were the only people apart from one man, in the bar area. There was no one serving. After a while a man appeared and started to take our order.

We attended our work Christmas party here last night and I am so disappointed that I had to write about our experience.

We came for dinner with my boyfriend, as a stop-off place that looked cute with a varied menu.

The chequers has been refurbished since I was there last and a excellent job they have done of it. With a group of 10 friends we had an excellent long lunch. The food was very good and the service superb. A great blend of attention when we needed it and being left alone the rest of the time. Chequers has got the balance just right.

We visited the Oxford Street kitchen for a weekend lunch after seeing some great reviews and decided to give it a go. To sum it up in a nutshell the food was very good and just about countered the lack of atmosphere and the poor service. Everything was so slow from taking drinks to serving each course and we were one of only two parties in the restaurant. I'm not sure how they cope when they're actually busy. We were also made to feel guilty when the staff got the order wrong! I would go back just for the food, but they really need to sort out the service to try and get others to come back.

Had a great time at Oxford street kitchen. Food was absolutely amazing. Had a venison and soufflé, other half had pork and brûlée. Service was great. Will be definitely coming back. Well done Sebastian and the team.

We came in on a Saturday lunchtime to try the food as the previous reviews looked really good. On arrival, we were not very well greeted, and told quite stiffly that we could sit anywhere in a very cold and quiet room - no ambience whatsoever. The main restaurant looked far nicer, but for some reason we weren’t given the option, eventhough, only one table was occupied....and another couple came in after us and were given a table. Oh well the food was going to be great, according to the reviews. We waited and waited..you get the picture. Finally the French, rather grumpy waiter took our order, he didn’t ask us if we wanted drinks though, very odd, so we added this at the end of our order. Drinks did arrive swiftly. Then we waited and waited....waited a little bit more until we looked at our watches and low and behold nearly an hour had passed. At no point did the waiter come and ask us if we wanted another drink, I’m sure he was busy with the other 7 people. Finally we took it upon ourselves to ask politely how long our food, which I may add, was a burger and sandwich not chateaubriand, was going to be. The response was, we have a table of 7, the chef is cooking for them, so our food hadn’t even started to be cooked. Blimey, what if the restaurant was busy? Obviously rhetoric, no answer needed. No apology, no, I’ll go and check on your order, just; you will have to wait. So as a fair review, I can’t comment on the quality of the food, as we didn’t get any, I have a funny feeling, we may still be there, had we decided to take our chances. One other thing, please play some background music, especially at Christmas, the place was completely soulless

I took my wife here for her birthday. We started with a couple of drinks at the bar which was comfortable, had a great selection of gin, beer and wine, and polite and attentive staff. Dinner was faultless. Despite them hosting a Christmas function at the time, the service was great and we didn't feel forgotten or ignored at any point. The food was some of the best we'd ever had, we tried the beef and pork dishes and were not disappointed. Would recommend anyone and everyone to go.

Just had lunch there with 4 friends to remember a great friend who is sadly no longer with us.

The food was excellent and timely. Some of the best chips I have had in a long time. The steak was cooked exaclty to my request. Abi was great and ws happy to accomodate my last minute request on the bill.

We ate lunch here and the food is excellent. The restaurant was lacking atmosphere as there was only 6 people eating there at peak time plus there was quite a long wait for the food. We thought that the quality of the food is really good but the prices are rather high and perhaps people are not prepared to dig deep enough to eat here.

My partner and I had a meal here last week, great atmosphere with live music, the food was so good, I had salmon, my partner steak and we both really enjoyed our food, good quality and really flavourful. We will defiantly be back.

Ate here last week, as we had some friends down visiting and staying at the Hotel. So much has improved since we were last here, 2016. The entire hotel seems to have been refurbished and the restaurant is now spacious and new.

Finally decided to visit the recently refurbished Oxford street kitchen at the chequers hotel last week for an anniversary meal with my wife, and what a great decision that was.

Me and my partner recently came for a meal here I had the venison dish which was absolutely Devine and my partner had the pork loin dish which she said was cooked beautifully I highly recommend coming here for a meal! The service is of good standard and the drink selection there’s so many to choose from. I will definitely be coming for a meal here again!

Me and my partner came in for a meal we were very warmly welcomed by an extremely friendly French man called yanock, where we were sat on our table and our drinks were bought over to us as expected. To start I had the duck breast which may I add came out looking a million dollars the duck still pink the purée and smoked mayo went hand in hand with the flavours on the dish well worth the money I paid!! I then had the pork dish to follow again the presentation was incredible the succulent loin of pork and pork belly was cooked to perfection, the belly melt in the mouth outstanding dish I really enjoyed the meal the service was spectacular, relaxed but attentive I would recommend it to anyone thank you guys for an excellent evening and we will see you very soon as we loved the place that much.

Decided to pop into the recently refurbished Chequers hotel for a relax dinner with the wife.

This hotel is very handy for when I visit family. Excellent breakfast, and the staff respond well to requests for specific areas of the hotel. Parking is included, as is WiFi. Just booked my next stay!

Ate at the chequers Hotel AGAIN tonight. Food absolutely amazing. Yannick and staff fab and Seb the head chef knows how to create an amazing plate of food. Thanks guys, see you next week. Definitely need to visit if you haven’t already. Top class.

We attend a celebration for my Auntie and Uncles 65 th Wedding Anniversary. There was over 30 of us and the hotel handled the majority of the arrangements very well. Our room was very nice, some bigger than others. It was very clean and facilities in the room were good. Tea coffee facilities, coffee machine, Bluetooth speaker, iron and board, TV. Staff were very accommodating and helpful. Breakfast was ok if you arrived early, if you came a bit late pickings were slim! Sunday’s breakfast unfortunately Luke warm sadly. Celebration meal was a little limiting but what I had was nice. Hotel recently renovated and nicely done. I would stay here again.

Dinner in the newly refurbished dining room. Decor and ambience good. Menu pretty standard but varied enough for most palates. Food served promptly and hot. Staff friendly prices reasonable. Will visit again

My husband ordered the steak strips meal. We had quite a good selection to choose from. When he started to eat this, there was no meat as such just lots of slimy fat. He could not eat it and didn't want a replacement meal. It completely put him off. Such a shame.

A warm welcome we were allowed to check in really early they just swapped our room. Room very nice with lovely bathroom with bath & shower, endless hot water and good quality toiletries. We had a 3 course evening meal both service and food were extremely good. Service and quality of food at breakfast again very good with an amazing choice and all cooked fresh to order. This was our 2nd stay and definately won't be the last!

We booked a double room for a night's stay, but did not avail ourselves of the bar or restaurant. The room was nicely furnished, the bed comfortable and all very clean.

Single night stay as part of cycling trip. Staff friendly and tried to be helpful. Bikes stored safely in locked boiler room. Basic selection in the bar. Adequate but you would want to spend a full evening there. Room was clean with newly refurbished bathroom, if a bit small. Full English breakfast good. Continental option a bit sparse.

Only stayed in Newbury for a night, found the hotel on Expedia for £80 and we were very impressed with it. Easy to find, in strolling distance from town and parking onsite was great. The rooms are a tad dated but still very pleasant. Room was very comfortable, had a bit of a walk from reception to get to it, easily manageable with our overnight bags, did see a couple struggling a bit with large suitcases! Staff very friendly, didn't eat in the restaurant as a good selection in town

we booked a night away in Oxfordshire & decided to extend it to two nights & chose Newbury as its half way there for us. I booked the hotel through booking.com for £65 on a Saturday night, this was room only but still quite good value.We arrives at 1.30 pm & popped in to ask if it would be okay to leave the car in the car park whist we went into Newbury for the afternoon. We had a very warm greeting from the receptionist who checked and said we were more than welcome to check in! We had requested a quiet room as some reviews said floorboards creaking above them were a problem. We were on the 2nd floor (top floor) at the back and it was peaceful and quiet.The room was very nice with a 6ft very comfortable bed and a settee. The curtains were lined and they met in the middle without a gap! Everything that was offered was there. One slight criticism was the bathroom, excellent quality loo roll, beautiful fluffy towels, good toiletries and very clean with an abundance of hot water, however it could really benefit from a refit. We had a three course evening meal & the service and food in the very nice dining room were good. They do a set menu Monday-Friday for £18.50, we ate using a tastecard so I think both of these value for money but I don't think I would be prepared to pay the full price. Overall a very good stay the reception,stairs and corridors, bar and restaurant were very nicely presented, I would not hesitate to stay here again.
