Excellent atmosphere, service & food, and we were tricky! - As a mother of a child with multiple allergies eating out can sometimes be a significant challenge, not this time. Staff were amazing. They had been through the menu in advance for us to highlight things we could have, and things that may be problematic, they organised bread without allergens, and the poor waitress had to take a very complicated order for 3 burgers consisting of a mix of a vegan burgers, buns, cheese, vegan cheese, no cheese, a meat burger with a vegan bun, no bits or all the bits or just some bits! - I felt like we were no trouble at all. Also my sea trout special was to die for. Thank you Angel. we will be back.

Held my Dad's 80th birthday celebration here. The staff were very helpful and friendly, from the organisation through to the actual day. The food was excellent, every one enjoyed it, which is amazing when there's 21 plus people. For me the stand out food was the soufflé, steak pie and the chocolate pudding. I'll definitely be back again.

Unexpectedly great food, a real step up from standard pub grub. I had a cheese soufflé starter which was fantastic. Not really my thing but thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful. My main was a steak pie. Not only was this huge it was super tasty with a delicious filling. I had to skip desert after this beast! In the same week I had a very disappointing pie in the so called home of pies (Bakewell) this really showed how it should be done. All this whilst serving our party of 18 which can be testing for any kitchen. The interior decor has been nicely done and all the staff we came into contact with were great. Also worth noting we were able to stop overnight in our motor home in their very large car park with prior arrangement. Well done team and thankyou

A fabulous Sunday Lunch. The food was as good as always. I chose the pork this time and it did not disappoint. Then I chose the cheese for afters. I wonder if Dave pickles his own walnuts-they were a great accompaniment to the cheese board! Oh and staff here are wonderful!

Perfect We have been here a couple of times recently once for lunch and dinner. I came for a meal the other week and intended to write this review earlier as I was very impressed by the food, atmosphere and specifically the service. We were served and made feel very welcomed. The food was delicious and came pretty quickly. So all round we had a fab experience and definitely recommend!

Thoroughly enjoyed our trip to The Angel this evening, have been looking forward to visiting since the renovation. We hadn’t booked and although it was busy, we were fitted in and seated in the restaurant. The renovation is lovely, beautiful surroundings for both eating or stopping by for a drink. We were greeted warmly and the service was top notch, nothing was too much bother. The waiting staff were professional, friendly and knowledgeable about the food. So nice to go somewhere where you feel your custom is valued. Staff worked hard to provide a great service. Food was lovely, good quality, very well presented and reasonably priced. Can highly recommend and will be returning!

We had been waiting for this restaurant to re-open after renovation, to revisit for lunch. We visited mid week and it was not very busy. We were shown to a table and provided with menus, which contained a range of choices, although we felt there was too much emphasis on meat dishes. The menu also showed dietary information, which was useful for us. We ordered, confirming our dietary needs. Whilst waiting for our meals we observed the extent of renovations, and also noted that the external doors remained open. Whilst not cold outside, we found this still resulted in the bar/restaurant not being as warm as we would have wished. When served, the food portion size was good, but unfortunately parts of a gammon steak were tough and inedible. We did mention this when settling the bill, and received a "routine" apology. Overall the service was very good, but we felt the prices were a little expensive, perhaps to fund the renovations. Based on some of the other reviews our experience may have been unfortunate but we were still disappointed, and decided on an alternative menu for a "group of friends" lunch later in the month.

Wow, what a place! We both had a fabulous lunch. The French Onion soup was so delicious that I had some as a take out. We had great service from Emily who was extremely helpful and showed us around the newly refurbished property, which was of very high standard with quality furnishings and fittings. Will definitely return, with an overnight stay next time.

Booked for Sunday Lunch for 11 of us. Warm welcome, drinks orders taken straight away, good selection on food menu. Food was excellent, enjoyed by all. We eat in the conservatory, which on a very cold day was nice and warm. Would have given five stars but food service was a little slow, probably due to our number. Can't wait for the hotel and restaurant to open fully when renovations complete.

Held my daughters wedding here at the weekend, we had the most wonderful time, a few of us stayed on the Friday night ready for the wedding on Saturday, the staff were so friendly and helpful and went over and beyond helping to make it so relaxed and special. The sun even came out on Saturday afternoon and we were able to have canopies and photos on the bridge in the lovely gardens. Got to give a special mention to the catering team, the food was outstanding, I cannot recommend this venue enough, it’s perfect for any special occasion. Thank you The Angel.

We had a really diappointing Christmas Day lunch with poor service. Despite sending uneated tough beef and awful desserts back with comments about their quality, nothing was done or said other than the chef would be told. The mince pies were served in plastic supermarket packaging and everything was rushed and not at all special. I took the time to send constructive feedback by email in early January but received no reply so re sent it a couple of weeks later and still havent had a reply. My conclusion is that this establishment does not care about its customers at all. I will never return and do not recommend.

Special mention to Renė out waiter, nothing was too much trouble for him. All in all we will most certainly be back and look forward to another dining experience. We called in for lunch whilst in the area. This restaurant is close to the A168, but without being obvious. Our welcome was a little disjointed as the receptionist was trying to juggle hotel requests with restaurant visitors and orders. We were shown to a pleasant table in the bar area, which was not very busy. The menu provided sufficient choice including catering for a specific dietary requirement. Orders are taken at the table and when served, the good quality meals and portion size represented excellent value. Paying the bill was again slightly delayed by the receptionist dealing with the hotel and restaurant arrangements. The service was nevertheless pleasant, and would have been rated excellent without the slight arrival and payment delays. Overall an enjoyable and relaxed visit

Thought we would give it a go again after a couple of years .We wanted a Sunday dinner and unfortunately all the good places were booked up .This wasn’t and now we know why !£19 for Sunday dinner was a bit hefty but we decided to dine .Meal came the beef was overdone and very chewy but then cam the vegetables for 2 ! There was 3 small diced carrots and one roast potatoes each cut in half we couldn’t believe it !.When I asked the young girl is this vegetables for 2 she replied yes and asked us why ! We asked for more vegetables and she went off to get us some when we started to eat them the carrots were raw and the rest of the vegetables were undercooked ! We are what we could and asked for the bill which was nearly £50 with the drinks ! We was that hungry we went to McDonald’s on the way home .£19 for a one course dinner with undercooked vegetables and smaller portions of vegetables than a kids it is disgusting save your money and don’t go here !

Called in on way back from Harrogate Flower show at 2.30pm on a Friday afternoon. We were advised kitchen had closed at 2pm, but would ask the chef .We had just bee turned away rather abruptly by the Crab & Lobster five mins before as their kitchen closed at 2pm also. The chef was happy to cater for my wife & I, plus my recently turned 90 mum. My mum had home made steak pie, fantastic, my wife fish & chips, again fantastic and I had pan fried salmon - cooked and seasoned to perfection. As our food was brought out we thanked them for serving us as advised we had been out to the flower show to treat my mum who had turned 90 two days before. The lady chef came out to wish her happy birthday, really nice touch. After the meal they then came out with a tray of a dozen individual cakes, with "Happy Birthday " wrote across the plate - FOC. The exceptional food was only outdone by the exceptional staff - brilliant and what a contrast compared to the Crab & Lobster.

The landlord at the Dog and Gun in Carlton Marriott had finished serving food but directed us to the Angel in Topcliffe. Apparently our last review got mentioned as unfortunately we spelt her name wrong last time. Luckily we had a good laugh about it.With it falling on a Friday they were rather busy, however Kiera still took the time to show us up to our room and we managed to have a quick chat. The food was fantastic as it was last time. But it was truly amazing to have such a pleasant evening with what didn’t just feel like a waitress, but a friend. Will definitely be coming back, and again will most certainly mention it to our friends as we often use the Thirsk area as a “middle point” between where we live. Truly felt as if we were at home. We booked the hotel as we are traveling to Northumberland and Scotland on holiday. One of the main reasons we chose it was the dinner, bed and breakfast deal for £140.00 for two per night. The hotel/restaurant/bar is very well maintained with a huge outside seating area. The room we stayed in was exceptionally clean and had everything we needed for an overnight stay, although a little small for us if we’d stayed longer. The bed was only a double but was comfy and the amenities adequate. The restaurant was lovely, good homemade cooking on show and my husband was very complementary about the beef pie and the lovely pastry, hopefully that was homemade or locally bought as he raved about the pastry and he has been a chef for over 25 years! The staff were welcoming and friendly and our breakfast this morning didn’t disappoint either... a huge selection which was great. Overall a really lovely little gem and we would recommend to anyone.

As we entered to order some drinks the bar man was rude to other customers within my party’s earshot. When we asked about dinner we were abruptly told to be prompt at ordering as the kitchen closed in 10 mins. We were shown to a table opposite the fire exit when most of the other tables were unoccupied. I asked if we could be moved and waited.... then took it upon ourselves to take our drinks to another more pleasant table. We waited an age for the most dissatisfying meal. My prawn and Monkfish skewer was rubbery and cold, my guest’s chicken Kiev would have been better suited as an ice hockey puck, it was so tough that the knife would hardly cut through and the inside was dry and solid. I have eaten here many times over the years and until now thought we were lucky to have such a nice pub close by. We paid for our food and left as soon as possible not wanting to cause a fuss. We had this meal in the evening after watching the Wimbledon final and have not been back since, not even for a drink.

The Angel is a favourite local, I arranged a meeting with a work colleague on a very hot Wednesday lunchtime. The Angel has a lovely, spacious and well laid out garden and we found a shady spot for our meeting. There were about 2 other groups of guests when we arrived at 1pm and only 1 couple in the bar. A waitress came out and cleared our neighbours table but didn't speak or offer us a menu, I went in to get drinks and collect the menu. I was a little surprised when I ordered a sparkling mineral water that I was handed a bottle and asked if I wanted a glass?! I was then told that as I was sitting outside I couldn't have a I tab, I would need to pay for the drinks and come back in with my table number to order my food and pay.

Having stayed here last year, we were very deliberate in our plan to have lunch here today. The staff were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. On a very hot day, the garden offered plenty of seating with parasols to shade the worst of the heat. A good selection of soft drinks as well as local ales. We ordered the sharing platter for two with a side of fries which was exactly right for the weather and thoroughly enjoyed by us both. The tv with cricket enticed husband indoors while I enjoyed the crossword and glorious warmth in the garden. A short interval made pudding seem like a good idea. We were not disappointed!

We'd stayed here on Wednesday evening as was dinning at a restaurant down the road. We had a great stay at the Angel, lovely staff and locals, beautiful beer garden. We wished we'd dinned here, but we'll be back. Please say hello to Sam, Jade and the local guy who works at the seafood restaurant down the road (sorry I forgot his name) great staff, lovely rooms with comfy beds and fab breakfast in the morning x

Basically a pub with grub and rooms but that makes it sound just average when in fact this is a real gem! One of the West Park Inns group and it is a credit to its owners. We stayed overnight on the way to elsewhere, having booked it after staying at a sister place The Blue Bell at Arkendale, which was also excellent.

We booked a table in the restaurant and the staff were brilliant from start to finish, they were very friendly and made us feel very welcome. I am a VERY fussy eater and have to say this is one of the few places I’ve been to where EVERYTHING was cooked to perfection and delicious. Very good value for money, great portion sizes and the wait time was spot on!

Went here for lunch while visiting the area as we had been many years ago and remembered it as being very good. We weren’t disappointed! The service was very pleasant and friendly. We both opted for the light main course and drink for £10 each. The portions were very good and the food was excellent. Sadly, I had no room left for pudding! Parking was plentiful.

Just passing by and decided to stop for a beer. They were dog and vegetarian friendly so we decided to have lunch. Not just the standard boring Sunday roast but a varied menu. The food was superb, very well priced, beautifully cooked and presented by nice staff in a pleasant setting. We will be back soon. What a change from mediocrity and out of a packet pub grub that we find so often on a weekend.

My husband and I recently got married here on 18th May 2019! I stayed the night before with a lot of my family and my bridesmaids too! We were a large table of 8 adults and a shattered baby too. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating to us despite being busy, and the food was incredible! They were absolutely amazing from day one of booking our wedding, right up until us leaving the venue the day after! We spoke frequently, and they answered my calls/emails very quickly when I had any questions or had to change things last minute. Nothing was a problem for them! I stayed in the Halo suite both nights and it was a truly beautiful room! The housekeepers were such a lovely team, and even waited to clap me as I walked with my dad in my wedding dress! The staff were absolutely amazing right throughout and we were blown away with their outstanding customer service! (particularly Josh and Gregg who helped us all day!) The food was cooked perfectly, and I honestly wish I could write in words just how incredible this venue really is! I would recommend it to anyone, not just as a wedding venue, but as a friendly, accommodating hotel and restaurant! We cannot thank you all enough! Mr and Mrs Hobbs xxx

Meat, Yorkshire, veg and gravy were lovely. The mash was however lumpy ( absolute pat hate) and we only got two small and very pale roast potatoes, so a bit of a let down.

Myself and my family used to own a Caravan down the road for years, 20+ years of use until my grandparents had to give it up when I was about 10-12 (I'm 28 now). It was used every summer and we spent many a wonderful childhood memory using the village.

Absolutely amazing wedding reception! Very reasonably priced and absolutely amazing food on the night. We had a mix of a barbecue and buffet and there was more than enough food for everyone. Lovely atmosphere on the night. Nothing was too much trouble and we had such a great night. I would recommend anyone looking for a venue to look at The Angel. Thank you for a wonderful evening!

We decided to eat here on a whim and really enjoyed the evening. The car park is large and there is plenty of seating for dining in this place. The menu is varied and had lots of nice things to choose from. We had the curry and the lemon and garlic skewers for mains and treated ourselves to a dessert of a creme brulee and a white chocolate and raspberry tart. Everything was delicious and was served by friendly staff. Would definitely go again.

2nd visit, this time a family birthday so 5 of us. We had 4 starters- 2 salmon mousse which was fab and lifted by the fennel and pickled bits and pieces, a tomato arancini and a belly pork. The belly pork was little disappointing- bit thin and too much salad for our carnivores taste. Veggie mushroom and falafel burger tasty but falafel part a bit dry. Venison, steak and cod all Great, spot on cooking and really lovely range of fresh veg.

Booked a table at short notice on a Sat night- no problem getting a table. My partner enjoyed his cask ale from a good selection and I had a very well-made Campari soda. Despite there being a large function- wedding? - the service was attentive and friendly. The menu was full of delicious choices but we both settled on fish- salmon with pesto wrapped in Parma ham and a roast cod loin with pea veloute. Very good dishes- fresh and tasty veg not overcooked- decent portions- well-seasoned and joy of joys not a mini pan, chip basket or slate in sight. All the effort seemed to have gone in the right place, the food on the plate. Topped off with a couple of puds- strawberry and rhubarb crumble and custard and a pecan and maple tart. Both tasty but tart pastry a bit soggy. I was impressed by the standard of cooking and interested in the programme of events coming up too. We will be back very soon .

Staff friendly and polite. Service not speedy but I’d rather wait and know it’s been cooked fresh. £10 for a main meal and a drink so not too badly priced. Lovely surroundings. No complaints about the meals... delicious, will go again.

Went with friends, up from London, for the first time on Friday night, and blown away by the cosines, and ambience of the place. Staff were amazing, and service spot on, couldn't fault it in anyway. Took up the Steak Night deal, which was two sirloin steaks and a bottle of wine for £28. Absolute bargain, and best steak ever. Will be hard pressed to find a steak as good as that. As we have a holiday home in the village, will be frequenting this establishment often.

I have been here for the last 3 weeks on business for 2 nights a week, still 3 weeks to go 😀 Lovely welcome by everyone who has been on reception on all my visits, very helpful, friendly and they go that extra mile to help. The rooms I've stayed in so far are ( 2-10 and 31) which were very clean, cosy and well presented with everything you needed, Iron, hairdryer and tea and coffee facilities. The only little issue was the shower door rollers kept coming loose, just life cycle replacement needs attention at some point. I could not fault any of the cleaning at all and that's very rare for me due to being a cleaning trainer for the NHS, hotels, schools and offices for 20 years. I meet some of the cleaning first thing on the morning and they were also very polite and always smiling. The bar area was comfortable, clean, all the staff are friendly and the food in the restaurant-bar is excellent, large portions, presented beautifully and very tasty...... 😋 I didn't have the breakfast , so i can't comment on that... Thank you so much for making me feel welcome, especially when I'm here on my own. I will miss coming here when my business in Northallerton comes to an end 😊

Visited as a couple 7 March. We were staying in the hotel. Ambience was good. The eating area could perhaps do with a bit of updating but it is fine. Menu is a mix of pub classics and more adventurous dishes. I had one of the latter as a starter, Lamb Tagine Roll with harissa mayo and smoked aubergine purée. Very good. The roll had chunks of lamb and the mayo had a kick. Tasted and presented very well. I had steak and ale pie for main. Appeared home made with real chips. Again very good Mrs W had the pork belly which she enjoyed too. We had a very nice bottle of NZ Sav Blanc as well. Very good value.

The valle of York has an identity problem it has swings and cheap plastic flowers it lacks atmosphere it seems to be trying to be a city centre pub. OK for the odd visit but I would head in to thirsk you have more choice and the pubs have proper seats and no artificial flowers
