Passed this pub many times and decided it was time to go in. We were not disappointed. Well kept beer, Shepherd Neame, hubby was delighted to find Late Red on tap. The food specials were home made, we had liver and bacon and stuffed hearts. So nice to have totally different meals on a menu and they were excellent. Took us back to our childhood days with offal now generally being out of favour. We will return

Ordered steak and kidney pudding with fresh vegetables, husband ordered pie of the day with ‘skin on’ fries. Mine was cold/lukewarn, ‘fresh vegetables’ were a portion of, probably, frozen peas, husband’s chips were vaguely warm and not ‘skin on’ fries, but standard fries at best. Returned mine and got it back microwaved within an inch of its life. Husband didn’t return his because he didn’t want to make a fuss. Have eaten before and remembered it as nice, definitely won’t again.

We went here recently for Sunday roast. One way system in place which was good as not all pubs doing this or able to. Staff were friendly and helpful but maybe too attentive at the table but can’t complain as some places don’t even bother coming over mid way through ! The toilets were clean and tidy which says a lot about a place and its hygiene. The roast was nice but it wasn’t spectacular but we enjoyed it all the same. The portion sizes were good and the children’s roast dinner was a good size and generous. The only downside to our lunch was that there were a few tables by the bar with retired looking gentlemen shouting to one another and had probably had a good few drinks before we got there. I think one was the owner of the pub or the manager. They were having a laugh but they too loud they were swearing a lot - f words every other sentence. My children kept looking up shocked and we weren’t happy about the atmosphere imposed on us especially as we had spent over £50. Nobody told them to pipe down. So for that reason I won’t be returning. I hope they read this review and realise swearing a turn off for paying customers especially when children are present. I am on the area again maybe stop for a beer...

Being locals, me and my fella always eat in the town on Saturdays and occasionally venture along to the old town for lunch. I hadn't been inside this pub for a couple of years (and even then it was only for a drink on pirate day). We decided to give it a go a couple of days ago, lured in my the tempting menu and open fire. What a brilliant decision! The whole place has had a facelift, with more emphasis on dining. The interior is really cosy and nicely lit, with a really good choice of traditional dishes and puddings. We both had liver and bacon with mash and veggies which was perfectly cooked in delicious onion gravy. The portion sizes were generous, so we didn't have room for dessert, so I shall have to go back to try the homemade bread and butter pudding! We really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, and the service was very friendly and efficient. It was so nice to find somewhere that doesn't over charge for the coffee and hasn't devoted half it's menu to weird cheeses and salad dishes that are all style over substance. Lovely filling gravy covered dinners for a fair price will keep us going back again and again!

Slightly rocky start where no-one had recorded my table booking for 4 that I had made a week earlier. However they dealt with this hitch extremely well and sat us in a little snug in the bar area. We ordered a chicken burger, which was a big piece of chicken on a bap, rather than a patty made with minced chicken. One of us had fish and chips and myself and another had local smoked un-dyed haddock and poached egg with mash, peas and parsley sauce. This is definitely my best restaurant experience in Hastings and really ticked all the boxes for me; warm, friendly efficient staff, nice ambience, generous portions of great quality local produce cooked perfectly and fantastic value. Also when one of us asked to take our leftovers away, they didn’t bat an eyelid and packed it up really well for us. There are so many restaurants now doing cheffy food and not always very well that it is really refreshing to come across a restaurant that serves more traditional dishes, we all loved it and can’t wait to come back here.

Visited this place due to the specials on the menu outside which included lamb stew at a very reasonable price. Was a very cold day so needed something warming! We were not disappointed. Although the food took a little while to arrive, it showed that everything was freshly prepared. Had the salt and pepper squid starter which was enough to share, and the squid was cooked just right. For mains I had the lamb stew with mash which was amazing for £8.95 and my partner had a large plate of scampi and real chips which was fantastic. We will definitely be back!

Every Sunday this inn and restaurant does a roast beef or roast chicken dinner. It was delicious. We had a huge helping of roast beef and roasted potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding. Then they served a huge tray of vegetables for us to share. It was just like ma used to make. Best gravy! Only down side - they don’t do dessert. Oh well probably for the best. We were stuffed. Having had lunch here last year and being suitably impressed I had no hesitation heading straight for The Anchor Inn when I stayed in Hastings again for a second time this year. I opted for Liver & Bacon with onion gravy, mash and fresh veg. The food was perfectly cooked, well presented and arrived in good time whilst sampling a refreshing pint from the ample selection at the friendly bar. What more can you ask for when arriving in town needing refreshment. It is located not far from the sea front in a bustling pedestrian street quite devoid of road traffic and therefore very pleasant to sit and relax watching the world go by having a leisurely lunch. Will definitely return in years to come.

When the food arrived the Cod smelt of the Sea , it was that fresh , a decent serving of chips and some peas . Topped off with a slice of lemon and Hollandaise sauce it was superb. The atmosphere was good with daytrippers, weekend visitors like us and locals , some of which were attired for the Green Man festivities. This was our second such weekend here and despite it being much colder than last year the Pub maintained a cosy feel.

Rotten winters day calls for booking a last minute roastie! First time we’ve been to The Anchor for a while for a roast, it’s had a refreshing facelift inside and out and is looking fresher. Service is always very good in this pub, very attentive, straight over for drinks, we ordered the roast chicken and the beef, the pub started filling up fast! It’s a place I always recommend when asked locally. What I love about The Anchor is the separate serving of gravy and veg, gives a decent serving, albeit I leave the peas, peas and a roast dinner just don’t go, it’s not a real veg in my book Hubby enjoyed his half chicken and I had the beef of which there is plenty. Not the best roast potatoes as they are more like boiled spuds that have been browned, but still tasty, and wouldn’t stop us going back. Much prefer a crispy Maris piper on my plate but the whole dinner makes up for it

This cosy Old Town pub with family atmosphere is dog friendly, offers a great service and fantastic deals!Took my family from Germany there every time they visited, and everyone was pleased and impressed. Definitely the best lamb shank Sunday Roast in town! Juicy, flavoursome... just YUMMY!The breakfast for only 4.95 is also second to none and fills you up nicely. I can recommend the veggie breakfast with tasty halloumi. For the little piglets among you (I'm outing myself as one, so don't be shy!), you can get a double up for 7.95. Simply amazing!I conclude with the best bit - the staff! Exceptionally friendly, making all the effort, and providing a great family atmosphere, they won't stop until their customers are satisfied. Also nice for events - sometimes bands are playing, and every now and again they have a mentalist there to entertain customers waiting for their Sunday roast table or their meal to go down. Watch out! He'll read your mind, almost as good as the staff. Highly recommended!Have fun and leave me some Guinness! :)

We'd been encouraged by others to have breakfast here, and it is dog friendly too, I can concur, so, not quite '3 men in a boat, to say nothing of the dog' but certainly 2 humans plus a dog! We visited recently, and I have to say we enjoyed a substantial breakfast! You can have lighter breakfasts, including vegetarian, but we both had the 'doubled up' version (neither had the vegetarian, so I cannot make comment about that, sorry). Anyway, 2 sausages were cooked nicely and very tasty, 2 thick rashers of middle bacon, again cooked well and tasty, 2 slices of black pudding, 2 hash browns and (more than just 2!) baked beans, all as you would expect. I love mushrooms, so always happy for as many as I can get of them (though only 2 flat mushrooms provided, sadly for me, but a very decent size, as you can see in my photograph!), and the slices of toast were perfect and well buttered, I presume you could ask for these not to be buttered, maybe it should be made obvious, but suited me, oh yes, and you can get brown toast if you want. I had a mug of tea with my breakfast, a nice strong Breakfast Tea with the tea bag left in the mug, and milk on the side, so up to you how strong to have it, but I cannot comment on the coffee, sorry.Overall, a very decent tasty breakfast, good value, and nicely presented. My friend even left some, maybe should have had the lighter breakfast, but the dog was very happy to sample what we shared surreptitiously with her! It has been suggested by another friend that you can ask for different combinations too, eg if you'd prefer a slice of bacon to a sausage, we were just happy to sample what was on offer, cheers!

Lovely pub serving good beers. The menu is very good and the fisherman's pie one of the best I have ever had. Totally recommend either just for a pint or two or dinner. Staff very pleasant and polite.

The food here is very good - although this place is quite unappealing from the kerb really (sorry Anchor!). The chap serving us was really friendly and nothing was too much trouble - and my fish and chips were great quality and plentiful. So good that we returned for breakfast! Cheers!

My partner had the smoked haddock. He cannot praise it enough.Usually a very fussy eater with traditional taste : )I had a very generous helping of pork ribs...it was amazing too! Thoroughly recommend the food there...wish we had returned for the Sunday lunch but we had to drive back Sunday morning..

stopped in this pub for a small lunch as not that hungry. Jean ordered a Tuna with red onion sandwich and I was tempted by the crab sandwich. Jean loved her sandwich but mine was a big disappointment. At £7.50 I expected it to be all white meat but it was very brown and I wished I had gone for the jumbo hot dog with chips which would have been half the price

Booked a table for 7 last Sunday, we sat at the back of the bar. If you want a decent roast dinner with real roast potatoes then this is the pub for you, very generous servings of 3 different veg,The lamb shank just fell off the bone, Roast beef tender and the turkey delicious !Great value for money, ( they even bring extra roast potatoes out to the table )Would definitely go again !If your a large party then you must book , the pub is very small and quaint but limited to table numbers, staff were friendly and helpful. could not ask for more.

I went there with my husband, my parants and sister. We had different roast and were all happy with quality of the food and service. If I go back to Hasting I would go back there for food and I recommend this pub.

Stopped here for a breakfast and was pleasantly surprised as this was very good when it came to the table Drawback was that the coffee was instant and could have so easily have been decent coffee instead from ‘bean coffee’ rather than instant Also it took quite a while for it to come to the table even though they were not busy at all Food was fine though and would try again - if we weren’t in a rush

Excellently sized portions, beautifully cooked. Staff were more than happy to accommodate my 18 month old twins. The beers were good. It was an impromptu decision as I had hoped to visit a restaurant on the other side of town, rated very highly on TripAdvisor, but am very glad we ate here instead. Highly recommended.

I came here on a Thursday evening with my partner and 2 year old child. I asked at the bar if children were ok and they were more than accommodating. Lovely home cooked meals and making the shepherds pie into a child portion wasn’t a problem. My 2 year old eat all of his dinner which is the best review anyone can have. Well done and thank you The Anchor xx

Staff very friendly and quaint olde world pub. Ate here twice for lunch and the food was lovely with good portions; the crab sandwich was huge with plenty of crab and soft brown bread, panninis were nice and both served with a good side salad and nachos. Next day had the scampi, whitebait and prawn kievs with side salad.Again fresh, good portion and very good price. Would definitely visit again when next go to Hastings.

I had looked at the reviews for this place on Trip Advisor before we left home as we needed a place to eat that was dog friendly. On arriving outside and looking at the menu which was somewhat limited we went looking for somewhere else but ended up coming back to the Anchor Inn as we couldn't find a table elsewhere that we could take our dog. What a turn of fate that ended up being and we we had one of the best meals ever. The staf couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating even bringing treats for out dog. Staff were very helpful and made great recommendations regarding the food which we took onboard and we weren't disappointed. We had the 3 Course Deal which was great value for money. 3 of us had the fish cakes which were really tasty and 1 of us had prawn cocktail which consisted of very large meaty prawns. For main 2 of us had the fish with chips, seasonal vegetables and a seafood sauce which was amazing. We always say that you know if you've had a great meal is you are still talking about how good the vegatbles are on the way home (and we were) Another one of us had the rib eye steak and the other person had the burger which were both brilliant. For dessert 3 of us had the sticky toffee pudding and if I have 1 minor criticism it would be that it could have done with a bit of toffee sauce. The other person had the cheese board which was delicious and plentiful . All of the meals were good sized portions and really well cooked. Thankyou to the staff that looked after us you really made our visit a great experience. If we find ourselves back in Hastings we'll be paying you another visit that's for sure. Well done.

Ordered a roast turkey Sunday dinner. The lunch was served with a very small and perfectly shaped Yorkshire pudding - no doubt out of a packet. The potatoes were all the same size, and appeared to have also come out of some frozen package. The potatoes tasted at least a day old, powdery & so hard and over baked, they were as hard as nails. Moreover, the whole meal had so much salt added to it, it required drinking an entire pitcher of water to quench the thirst. I suppose for the £10 price can’t expect a fully home cooked meal from scratch in a pub, but at least potatoes and Yorkshire puddings should be freshly baked. I can’t really recommend.

Externally unprepossessing, this "old Hastings" pub showed how good things can be these days. Really friendly staff, fish so local, they might have names and even an ability to make a good dressing for the salad accompanying my crab sandwich. I look forward to an evening, so I can sample what looks like a decent selection of beers.

Clean and inviting pub especially with their roaring open fire. Good food, with a vegetarian menu, and choices of real ale. Best to book up to have a seat because it is a very popular pub. Colin and Lynda

Had lunch here today with my family and friends after running the Hastings half marathon. Firstly the pub was unbelievably accommodating as we kept changing the number of people attending due to illness (sorry to be a pain!!) and also it took us longer to get from the finish line to the pub so we were late. However the staff were still helpful and happy to hold the table for us. We all had the Sunday roast which was lovely. Amazing vegetables and lots of food. All for a very reasonable £12 each including our drinks. Very impressed. Staff were friendly and helpful. Will definitely be returning when we are next in Hastings. Thank you!

My companion insist on our 1st meal of the day after traveling from usa to be pub food so we found a pub that opens for breakfast. When we got there, we decided to wait for lunch because lunch menu looked amazing. Located in the old town, it’s old (although not as old as the other pub across the street) & cozy with fireplaces on both sides of the pub & stuffy armchairs in a book nook. Very friendly proprietors; even looked up a website for us because we were having connection issues with our devices. We had the special roast beef (good but the meat was britishly over done), roast lamb (good), fish pie (great especially the sauce), mushroom soup (more like a mushroom paste than a soup... not sure what is going on). The food was pretty amazing for the fact it had so much vegetables both in variety & quantity.

When we first got to Hastings we had a huge dinner here - proper pub grub and yummy! I have since had a couple of roasts, all of which were delicious. And recently they started doing cooked breakfasts, which are very delicious, and you can double them up for a very reasonable price! Friendly staff await too -- all round a lovely pub

Really nice pub, just how they should be. The food looked amazing, next time for us. Also a very good sign, dog friendly with even free biscuits at the bar.

Loved this place. We (six of us) ended up lining the table with all the Filippo food and having a bit of each. It was all wonderful...even the hot dish I thought may be too hot...it was more warm and gently spiced. Will most DEFINATELY be back.

We have been member of the club for 6 years . We often go for breakfast but Brenda Andy have retired . The new people are absolute useless first you wait half hour for two breakfasts , to then be told you had not paid for two I went up and said to the lady to which she couldn’t admit it was her mistake , and basically told me and my husband to not come back . I love the club but won’t ever be using them for breakfast ever again shocking young people with chip on shoulders

Booked a cream tea here for last Wednesday to celebrate our 53rd wedding anniversary. It was absolutely wonderful. Very large scones with pots of cream and jam, two pots of tea and a slice of gateau each and the price was very reasonable. The staff were very helpful and the manager was brilliant. Will definitely visit again next time we are in Hastings.
