The Alfred Free House in Waverley

Having heard the hype for many years, we thought we’d try the pub for ‘early doors’ on a Saturday evening. It was fairly quiet but we were given a warm welcome and advice on the range of beers. The atmosphere was a little lacking and the pub felt a little sparse but it wouldn’t put me off. Just a shame there’s no food offering anymore as I’d have liked to have sampled their famous Sunday roast.

The landlord was rude, arrogant and would never recommend this place horrible atmosphere worst experience of my life, the price of a drink was ridiculous! Honestly nothing good about the place !

We had a table booked for 6 of us to have our last swan song as they say at The Alfred restaurant area. As from Sunday 3 December ALL FOOD will be stopped and only drinks will be available from the bar area. We had our table booked for 12:30 and the very efficient and friendly Joe seated us and then took our food and drinks orders. We have eaten here so many times over the years, and have always had such superb mouth-watering meals, and its such a shame this has now ceased. If you just want a drink then this place will still be open for that from 3 Dec 2023 but the rest as they say is history. So with this last review I would just like to say that we felt without any doubt or second thoughts this place did the very best home cooked Sunday Roasts/Food in the area👌🍽️🍗🍖🍚😋. All our meals on this last visit were outstanding as was the service. We are now having to look around for another Sunday Roast venue of this standard which we know is going to be quiet impossible. Thank you for all the absolutely wonderful evening meals and lunches we will all certainly miss them 😒🎅

Recently moved down the road so this should be our new local. Went in for a drink, made to feel so unwelcome by the obvious locals and lady behind the bar. Dogs are obviously not welcome. Will be sticking to the far better pubs in town

My Local. Great staff running the place. Brilliant beers. Fabulous burgers. Love it. Update: Another fab evening at The Alfred. Their Prawn Cocktail with Stilton is soooo good. Friendly staff too.

We visited the Alfred for a Sunday roast based on a recommendation. They are only serving food at the pub until Dec 3rd but everything about the food will be missed. The portion size with sides is brilliant and the service very friendly.

This place serves what we all feel is one of the best home cooked roasts you will get anywhere. It is such a shame that they will be stopping doing any Sunday Roasts as from 3 December 2023. With that in mind many people who know its closing for food have all booked in advance to get a table before that date. We went on Sunday 5 November and the six of us were absolutely delighted with the meals we had. None of us had a starter or a dessert as we new we would all be so full after the amazing roasts. A Roast Chicken will set you back £20, Roast Lamb or Beef is £21. The place was packed as usual and we had to wait in the bar area for our table to become available which was not a problem. The real ales are amazing and we do enjoy the atmosphere. We have luckily been able to get one more Sunday roast slot booked in but they are really limited now for any availability. It will be sad to see this venue close for food.

Haven’t been here for a while (we moved) but decided to treat ourselves to a bday dinner and we weren’t disappointed. Wonderful atmosphere, great service, chatty customers, a lovely dog, and delicious food (incredible portions). Thanks so much! What a wonderful establishment.

Went for Sunday lunch. The staff were very nice and went out of their way to help with parking/wheelchair access for the more infirm folks in our party. Sunday lunch was huge - £21 for one meat through to £25 for 3, but with a lot of trimmings so you probably only need one course. Tasty too. The atmosphere is not fancy/gastropub style - more like a traditional boozer. Beer range looked good but i didn’t try due to driving duties.

Friendly pub. Excellent range of cask and keg craft beers, that regularly change. Can't comment on the food as I have not tried.

Very small with limited parking but Oh My God, what a place for beer and food. Nowadays all restaurants charge high prices and the quality of food you get in return is pretty poor. Not here….the beers are fantastic with a great range, if you like ales then this is the place for you. The food is stunning and I mean out of this world good, all cooked fresh and to order. I had the 8oz filet steak and it was melt in your mouth good. Perfect, best I have ever had. I cannot recommend this place enough. All the staff are extremely welcoming and accommodating. Just go there, you won’t be disappointed.

Wonderful lunch: tasty and fresh ingredients, excellent lamb shank, delicious and original hamburgers. Service was excellent with kind and warm waitress and owner. Prices were very fair given the quality. You can’t go wrong with this restaurant. Thank you very much, we will definitely come back!

Tried for the first time for a party of six, large portions of good food. Two had fish dishes, rated as lovely, one had home made fish cakes with salad so much food was unable to finish the meal. Rated as excellent, two had lamb shanks again rated as lovely with plenty of meat well cooked and I had calves liver and bacon well cooked and tasty. We all felt slightly guilty about not finishing the large portions of vegetables. Would recommend.

Good exceptional, service exceptional even the pre-service (multiple phone calls!) Was exceptional. Couldn't fault a thing. Highly highly recommend. Had the vegan sausage and bean pie and was delish. Husband had the 8oz steak. Was delicious. Recommend reading their "about us" blurb on the website. Exactly as described.

Really the best pub in Farnham. It is a craft beer, real ale pub selling excellent pub food. The staff and atmosphere are so nice and they are always welcoming no matter the occasion. The Sunday lunch is particularly good, one of the best roasts around. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants a proper pub with great food and drink.

Not what we expected and it was a lovely surprise. We had beef burger, chicken burger, pork escalope and fish cakes. All very nice service was good and so was the food!!

For the real ale enthusiasts BUT I'm into lager at the moment and the equivalent lager was gorgeous 😍 definitely worth a visit, has a timeless charm to it.

Just come back from a family meal and cant begin to say how impressed we all are. The staff and the service was impeccable! (we were served by a person with glasses tonight 19/04). The food was outstanding, you can tell they use real quality ingredients!!! I can not wait to visit again and would recommend this amazing pub to anyone!!

My friend and I went due to the reviews and we were very disappointed with the food and the cost. We had a shared starter and shared desert and both drank soda water and the bill came to £77.00. The quality of the food was very poor and certainly NOT al a carte!! I had the sea bass and it was tasteless and clearly cheap and frozen. My friend had the bbq pork ribs and was full of fat and again cheap quality meat. The service was ok but when I questioned why we had been charged £9 for soda water I was horrified at the response of the waiter. I also struggled with the fact that they do not sell still bottled water! Will not be going back and would not recommend

We booked up a table for 7 adults on Sunday 9 April at 14:30. We really love coming here as the Sunday Roasts are just simply superb. This weekend was also the local Beerex at The Alfred and the ales on offer were excellent and has set me up quite nicely for the April Farnham Beer Festival. The prices of the Sunday Roast have been put up now and half a Roast Chicken with all the trimmings will set you back £20. If you opt for Lamb, Beef or Pork this will set you back £21. They also offer a triple meat option Beef, Lamb and Pork for £23. Some people will think the cost of a roast here is quite expensive, when there are other places around Farnham that offer very similar roasts for £14/£15. That is a true fact as we have eaten many roasts at several other places around Farnham which have been really good and priced as stated. However we just find the atmosphere, staff and portions offered here tip the balance in its favour. We have never been able to have either a starter or a dessert here, as the mains are literally so big and filling. For example with the half Roast Chicken you will get a portion of stuffing and a Yorkshire pudding which has had gravy already put with it. Then the vegetable dishes arrive with superb cauliflower cheese, a dish of roasted carrots with parsnips and peas/green beans with cabbage etc. You will also get your own personal small jug of extra gravy to drown your veg and roast potatoes. If you have never been here before, I would highly recommend, but be sure to book well in advance, as the place is always busy. We have on several occasions had to take a table slot time to fit in with The Alfred, as slots are booked up fast. When we arrived on this visit all the tables were in use again and tables in the bar area were in use as well. Thank you for yet another great Sunday Roast experience.

Visited for my sisters birhday after a recommendation Glad we booked as it was very busy as it was Sunday Roast was top notch, lots of meat cooked perfectly, tasty veg loved the cheesey leaks and great service/beer selection Only thing my partner dosent really eat huge portions and just wanted a starter to come out with the main which she said was delicious but the server seemed a bit unhappy with this Would come back again

We visited this pub on recommendation from friends for Sunday Lunch - not disappointed. Traditional choices Beef , Lamb, Pork and Chicken. We all had different option (I had Lamb). Our party complimented their options. Veg choices were superb and not lacking in amount! Staff attentive. Great selection of Ales and wine (Pinot Noir was reasonably priced at £25 and very good) A family run pub with good atmosphere. You will need to book for Sunday Lunch. Will definitely be back.

The Alfred does the BEST roast! We went today and the food was delicious, the portions were more than generous, and the staff were very friendly. We didn't have to wait long for our food to be served and it came out hot and fresh. We can't believe we haven't been here before a roast, and we'll 100% be coming back very soon! The red wine was also of high quality and at the right temperature which made a change! 5*****

We booked up a table for 6 of us to celebrate our sons 32 birthday on Sunday 15th Jan 14:30. When we arrived the restaurant was full and we had to wait in the bar area for our table to be ready. Within 10 minutes we were seated and as we already had drinks we put in our food order. The Sunday Roasts start off at £19 for half a roast Chicken, then its £20 for Lamb, Beef or Pork. None of us had starters as we know from experience just how big the meals are. My half roast Chicken came out with a Yorkshire pudding and gravy over the meat. All our meals arrived promptly and then followed on the simply superb dishes of vegetables and roast potatoes. We all did our very best to finish off all the dishes but we failed miserably. We had two dishes of Cauliflower Cheese which was divine. The Potatoes were amazing. The whole meal is just like you would expect from traditional home cooking. With every meal came another small pot of gravy to pour over your veg etc. The food was simply divine and there is literally nothing anyone could complain about. The bar has a superb stock of ales and drinks so everyone is catered for. Booking a table in advance is paramount as this place is so popular it gets busy very quickly and for good reason. We will certainly be back again in the very near future. Thank you.

Family run freehouse with a superb, ever changing range of beers served by friendly knowledgeable staff. Food is superb too at reasonable prices. I just wish I lived closer! Update: Oct 2022, beer range even better, still a great pub where conversation, beer and food is key.

Visited for Sunday lunch today for the first time. Staff were lovely and the roasts were excellent. Huge portions and both the roast pork and chicken were cooked perfectly. We have been to many many local pubs for Sunday lunch and this one was right up there with the best. Will definitely return!

Popped in for an impromptu visit on the way to Heathrow Airport from Somerset. We were accommodated at short notice and have to say the standard of food and service were absolutely excellent. Would thoroughly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

This is genuinely the nicest Sunday lunch I know of in the UK. I regularly make my boyfriend take me as it’s my absolute fave. I always have the pork and he has the beef and both never fail. The portions are generous (I avoid eating before I come so I can fit it all in). I don’t drink beer but my boyfriend likes trying all the different ones they have on offer. The service is so friendly and they really go out of their way to make sure you’re happy and enjoying your food. The pub is so cosy in the winter too and we like sitting by the fire in the bar when it’s cold.

Having visited this pub once before for a quick drink and to get out of the rain one Saturday early evening, my partner and I decided to visit again to actually sit down and have a few drinks this evening. We thought it was a lovely pub, warm and cosy with a lovely barmaid who remembered our drinks and made us feel welcome. However, we were approached by the older gentleman and told to keep quiet (I was only showing my partner a clip of a good movie) which wasn't loud, as he could hardly hear it!!! Very rude. Such a shame, as we were looking at the menu and it looks so good. I don't like to be told of like a child and feel humiliated.

My girlfriend booked a table here quite last minute. And if I'm honest I am so glad she did. The food is excellent, I had a roast pork and it was delicious... but the beers these guys have available in unreal.. coupled with the service this is an awesome pub...

The Cheers! theme song could have been written about this place. It's the pub I always longed to find but was never sure I would. Run by a wonderfully friendly family who serve a constantly changing selection of beers along with some top notch pub food. If you sit inside for half an hour or so you'll notice every customer who comes in is greeted by name. You could say that's a sign of great hospitality from the publicans, or perhaps it's because once customers discover this pub they never stop coming back. I'd argue it's both.

We visited The Alfred on the recommendation of a friend and were delighted to find such a lovely establishment so close to home. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the food was amazing. We will definitely be back to try the Sunday Roast.
