This is a hidden gem if you are going down to the river for a trip. The staff are really welcoming. The surroundings are a traditional pub with lots of WWI memorabilia. The food is amazing. Home cooked, fresh, traditional British food. If I ever go back to Chester, I will be eating here again. I think they do rooms as well so would definitely stay here. Loved this place.

Welcoming staff and atmosphere with good beer and fantastic food. 6 of us had something different from the menu, and every meal was first class, freshly cooked, and enormous portions. A must visit when in Chester, located adjacent to the Chester City Walls, this characterful pub is decorated as it may have been over 100 years ago with large amounts of First World War memorabilia. Timothy Taylor Boltmaker on tap when we visited as well as a very friendly pub cat and excellent, simple, great value home cooked food. Extra points for having Staffordshire Oatcakes on the menu too! Interesting fillings too, including haggis and cheese! Delicious! The pub is very selective of it's clientele and rightly so, to preserve the historic atmosphere. The feeling of stepping back in time is quite amazing, as were the historic Christmas decorations that were up when we visited. I would fully recommend this pub to anyone visiting Chester who is interested in real ale and history.

However, the website claims the place opens all day on Friday, it certainly didn't yesterday. I tried again shortly after 5pm, the young bartender was so engrossed with his mobile phone he just completely missed the fact that there was a customer waiting, not good. It is in a quiet street beside the city walls, only a short walk from the centre. 2 real ales on when I visited, it would've been nice to see a wider selection. Then again, there's a sound argument for keeping 2 well rather than having 6 mediocre ones! An interesting place and definitely worth a stop but not my favourite as far as Chester pubs go.
