The Aikton Arms in Allerdale

We visited on our holiday after searching for pubs nearby. The only downfall is the service was abit slow at first, obviously we’re not from the area so we got told what table we were at but didn’t get told if it was bar service or table service so we ended up sitting there for 10 mins with no menus not knowing. We went on a Sunday so the menu was two courses for less than £16! Very good value, the portions are good sizes and the food was lovely.

What a wonderful mea! We phoned in the afternoon, half expecting not to be able to get a table later in the day, but fortunately they could accommodate our table of 4. We have heard good things about the food and we certainly weren't disappointed. The quality of the food was exceptional, with my steak cooked to perfection. The prices are extremely reasonable, in fact probably really cheap given the quality and portion size. This isn't you're usual, below par class of pub grub. The two course deal is great value for money and we all enjoyed our starters and main courses. Somehow, two of our party still managed to fit in puddings.....I'm really not sure how! We will certainly return.

Service was a bit slow but charming and friendly, the food was excellent, sunday roast beef with the best gravy ever. Portions size large which was a problem because we ended up eating too much! Super value too.

The pub is clean and tidy and the staff are extremely nice however, the food is poor. Small portions which aren’t helped by the fact nothing is served with a side garnish/veg or any extras which you would expect. The homemade chips are very good but you only get a handful each and overall we were extremely letdown and left hungry.

We have made several visits back to the Aikton Arms since the original team have been back in charge and it is as good as it always was before they left. There is always a very good choice of dishes to suit everybody and everything is prepared with great care and with quality in mind. The staff are always so very attentive and thoughtful and a friendly welcome is guaranteed at this wonderful village pub. The 'Asahi' brand draught lager is up alongside Peroni and Birra Moretti and always goes down very well. It is very clear that the owners and the staff work hard to leave customers with a good impression and this is something that they always achieve. There is always ample parking and as the weather gets better, customers will be able to dine outside. We cannot recommend The Aikton Arms highly enough.

Met friends. The first time that I had been in the pub in years and I was truly impressed. Good beer (Timothy Taylors), excellent food (try the pate and the haddock and chips), well priced on a Thursday and an overall lovely pub. Well done. I will be back!

Another gorgeous, reasonably priced meal. We’ve been several times over the last 3/4 months and always enjoyed our choices. Good choice for vegetarians. Menu changes regularly so always an interesting choice of starters / mains / desserts. Good atmosphere and plenty of parking. Two alcohol drinks, 2 mains and one dessert was £41.

After all the bad reviews.....I thought i better tell everyone about our experience. 8 of us went for Dinner . The food was top notch and the service was brilliant . The prices were good too . Will definitely be going back soon . 8 people can't all be wrong . x

Never in my life met staff/managers like it. The customer is always right is not something they believe in. One of 4 people dining was not happy with their meal and the mayhem this caused was unbelievable. Unprofessional, rude and never made to feel so unwelcome anywhere!! We go away every year but have never experienced such negativity anywhere.They have tried to point the finger at us but we done nothing wrong, vile people

Terrible food appalling service owner and barmaid horrible. Won't be back. Stayed in the pod beside the pub. Ninja was filthy and had to be cleaned out before we could use it. Carol the owner was not approachable nor was she friendly. Definitely wouldn't recommend

Faultless meals and service especially from our server Emily. Very attentive, polite and efficient, a real credit to the pub she couldn’t do enough for us. Will be back especially for more battered cauliflower!

We have a caravan in the local area and were looking for somewhere to eat locally (without having to go into Keswick). Being coeliac my choices are limited for traditional pub fare, so I was very excited to find The Aikton Arms menu accommodated gluten free (including chicken goujons and onion rings!!) We were not disappointed!! The atmosphere was friendly, the staff were warm & welcoming and efficient. The food was delicious and there was so much choice for me too with my restrictive diet it was an absolute joy. The only thing we found that could be improved was the ambience in the pub, some warmer wall lights rather than the bright overhead ones would have made it fit with the cosy local pub atmosphere that it has but that is our only comment. We will definitely be returning and look forward to doing so.

I thought this was an overall great experience, good to see a once great venue back on course after some dodgy previous custodians, continuity with the waitress staff as well, barmaid, with some training could prove to be an asset to the premises, shame it’s only open weekends

11 adults and two small children went for Father's Day and birthday meal (Sunday). The staff were friendly and efficient. Service was reasonably quick. The food (Sunday lunch) was freshly prepared, hot and delicious. Good value for money as well. We all enjoyed it, and will certainly be back soon. Highly recommended.

Sorry this couldn’t be more positive but it is what it is. We decided to try a take away this time as some of the family didn’t want to go out. We were told the food would be ready to collect at 9. Went early, pub wasn’t busy so hoped the order would be ready quickly. Still there after ten o clock waiting. Kept being told it would only be a few minutes but it wasn’t. Food was dreadful when it arrived home, lasagne was burnt and inedible, fries were rock hard, children’s meal was not nice at all, they ended up filling up in garlic bread despite the crusts being rock hard, side salad was some sorry looking leaves and one tomato slice, the other meal was left uneaten too. We were given three brownies as a ‘sorry for waiting’ but these had no taste and a very dry texture. So sad to write this, we had high hopes of this being our regular place to go for a pub meal but definitely won’t be back and definitely would not recommend to anyone either. Over £100 spent on poor quality food and service (see earlier review). Only gave a rating of one as there is no option for rating zero.

I have been in 4 nights as I’m a solo traveler, the meals were very good I have enjoyed every one. You must try the Sunday lunch, it was melt in the mouth beef and huge Yorkshire pud with all the trimmings. Everyone made me feel so welcome and I’d like to thank them.

Booked for a family birthday waited a hour for food to arrive there was only another table of two in , five meals came out which were finished before the remaining four meals came just terrible service when we complained we were told the chef had cooked the kids meals first which was not true as we only had two children meals we will never go back absolutely shocking used to be such a good place to go

If I could give this place 10 stars I would ! * * * * * * * * * * We have been a few times with friends, with the children and as a couple. We are always given a very warm welcome by Wendy and her team which I really love and nothing is too much trouble. We have eaten there a few times and the food is outstanding, the Sunday roast is the best I have ever had, tasty meat and lots of it, homemade Yorkshire puddings and plenty of vegetables. I don’t mind waiting for food as it’s all home made and the standards are very high, fresh ingredients and always served piping hot and big portions. The pate and prawn cocktail starters are my favorites and the surf and turf is out of this world with sautéed juicy prawns bursting with flavor and a succulent steak cooked exactly how I like it. Our children and our dog have always been made welcome and the games room and large garden are great to keep the children occupied if we have ordered food. A great selection of beers, spirits and wines and equally a good selection of non alcoholic drinks. My boyfriend is quite possibly the fussiest eater in the world and Wendy always finds a way to accommodate him which is a real personal touch of a family run pub compared to chains. This place really is a little gem hidden in the countryside and I would recommend to anybody. You can’t beat a private family run pub and a massive thank you to Wendy, Danielle and Tony for always providing a service that is 100%

Visiting this are in our caravan for the first time. Googled pubs in the area and this little beauty came up. What a lovely clean and friendly pub / Restaurant. The roast dinner was excellent and so where the deserts.

Me & my wife had the chance of having a meal out without the kids and gave The Aikton Arms a try after a recommendation from someone and it didn't disappoint. The food was delicious, there was a good selection on the menu and an offer of 2 courses for £14 that made it excellent value for money. It's a nice little country pub but still had plenty of space inside and you didn't feel crowded. The staff were really friendly and the service was excellent. The roads aren't brilliant to get to it but it was definitely worth it. We will be going back the 1st chance we get!

We are new to the area and sampling all the local pubs with food.

We hadn't booked, but we were made to feel welcome. The local ale was delicious, as were both of our main course dishes. There was a very tempting choice of dessert; I recommend the pavlova! Service was good, and the surroundings were pleasant. Lovely evening.

Brilliant meals, king prawn starter and rump steak, plaice fillets. All beautfully cooked and washed down with excellent Cumbrian Ale. Oh, and an excellent welcome too!

Booked last minute on Easter Sunday. We all thoroughly enjoyed the carvery (with extra emmental gratin potatoes and halloumi fries) , scampi and chips and great onion rings. The tartare sauce had a homemade taste.

Lovely country pub with great food & real ale. Cod & chips (you can have either a small or large portion) truly excellent and very tasty cheese & spinach tart - one of several veggie options. Visited here last night after it was recommended by my parents. We booked a table online, which is advisable as the place was very busy. The service was impeccable, and the food was just devine. We liked that you get a choice of sides from a large selection, and would definitely recommend the onion rings - best we've tasted. Home made chips, good portion sizes and a varied menu. Iwasn't overly impressed with the red wine, but the food and service was so fantastic that I can forgive this. I can't wait to go back here again and will be recommending it to all of my friends.

My new husband and I just got back from a meal here whilst away on our honeymoon and we ate some of the most delicious food I can remember eating. I had steak which was cooked to perfection, and he had fish and chips which he couldn't finish despite his efforts. Truly beautiful food, generous portions at reasonable prices and lovely staff who were attentive and polite. An absolute gem of a place!!

Went for a meal with friends one dark Tuesday evening when almost no places are open and was pleasantly surprised. The pub is warm and friendly and service is excellent. We had a seat near the fire and my steak was spot on. Good servings and we left with no complaints. Very good and worth a visit if you can find it.

Wanted to give my In-laws a thank you for helping us with our garden. We ordered large Sunday lunches which were all good. Service was prompt and polite with a bit of 'banter' (courtesy of my father in law!). Lovely atmosphere and relaxed. Would recommend for a Sunday lunch, prices aren't bad too!

My first visit was with friends for dinner. Atmosphere was good, service was OK but it seemed like all requests were grudgingly received. Food was decent, though vegetarian soufflé option was more like bread covered in melted cheese than a light and tasty treat. Chicken dishes were tasty and popular and everyone liked the homemade chips. Price was reasonable.

We were actually staying in a cottage just down the way from the Aikton Arms and after a recommendation from the owners we decided to pop in on our last night. Pub is presented well, having appeared to have spent some money on its internal and external appearance. Inside is light and airy, welcoming with a friendly atmosphere with a small bar opposite the entrance. Staff were lovely, showed us to an adjacent table, took our order quickly. What struck me was how reasonable the prices were, I had a ribeye steak for less than I was expecting, quality when it came out was fantastic! All three courses were delicious, really glad we picked it for our last night. Whether you are passing through or local to the area, I would thoroughly recommend checking it out!

First time we’ve been here for a long time and after having many disappointing Sunday lunches (where the roast beef was questionable) at other establishments recently, decided to try here for Sunday lunch on someone’s recommendation - we were not disappointed - beef and belly pork delicious as were the roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and veg. Couldn’t fault it - will definitely be back. Thank you!

we visited as a couple fo friends and the food was good and a decent price. we ordered a bottle of wine which was very reasonably priced and good for what we paid. the service was quick and friendly. we didnt book and had no problem getting a table. i had the chicken goujons which were homemade and served with a nice dip. the chips are also homemade and very nice! will be back!

we visited as a group of four on a busy friday night and were not disappointed. everything we ordered was lovely and we really enjoyed all of our meals. the chicken goujons were especially good as they were in proper beer batter rather than breadcrumbs. fab food!

My boyfriend and I were staying in a cottage next to the pub for the weekend so decided to go there for dinner on our second night there. It was a lovely country pub with an open fire which was very welcome after the cold walk. The staff were very pleasant and the food was beautiful. Would go here again when we next visit

Booked in for Sunday lunch after reading some good reviews - and was not disappointed.

My partner and i visited here whilst staying nearly for a long weekend. We weren't disappointed. We hadn't booked but visited at 1800 and were directed to a table by the window. We chose chicken goujons and gammon and the portions were huge. It was well presented and we were asked of the food was okay..... it was mouthwatering. Then we had pudding gooey chocolate pudding with custard and the fabulous apple crumble. It was delicious and the plates were all clean. Staff were friendly and polite and plenty of car parking on site.

Stayed at Bruno's Bothy next door and during our stay enjoyed Sunday lunch and a takeaway from here.

This is the second time I have eaten here whilst staying with friends who eat here regularly. It is good home cooked food with good sized portions. Well worth a visit and I'm sure I'll be back again.

Our first visit to this pub . We came as a party of 13 tonight for a family birthday and would highly recommend this place . Service was lovely nothing was too much trouble . Great selection of menu, mixing traditional with new on the specials board. Staff are always welcoming and hard working. Food is delicious and you always get value for money, Sunday Lunch award winning standard. Would strongly recommend at trip out, but ideal to book as always busy.

Decided to go out for lunch on a whim, and I am glad we did!We just turned up - no booking required. Plenty of choice on the menu, and a board of specials, including Rabbit Ragout which was calling me, but the Sunday Roast won out. I had a small portion, and hubby had a regular portion - mine was the portion size I would serve at home, and Hubby's was more of restaurant size - both delicious. The beef was tender, and the veggies (carrots, cauliflower cheese and cabbage on the side and mash, roasties and Yorkshire pudding on the plate) were perfectly cooked.I was going to be good and leave it at that, but the deserts that were being served at the table next to us just looked too good and I succumbed - apple crumble with ice cream and custard - yummy!Hubby had a pint of 'Doris' (I think it may be a local beer, but regardless, it is it's 90th year apparently) he said it was 'an excellent pint' and well kept. I had an orange and soda - in all, the bill came to under £25.The staff were attentive and pleasant, without being obtrusive - in all a lovely lunch!

Once again another great meal tonight. Even though it was a busy night the staff were helpful and very pleasant as always. At £13.50 for 2 courses it's very good value. My only complaint was there wasn't room for one of their desserts.

Wasn't expecting this country fine dining establishment to be packed on a Thursday night in October, book ahead is my advice, we were lucky and got a table as the staff were extremely helpful and a did a bit of juggling, apologies to the couple who were having a crafty smoke outside as we arrived, there was no table available for them. Lovely meal, the 3 starter sharing option is great, mains all good and puddings are the best, Yates real ale was in peak condition, highly recommend this fantastic country pub, I thought the price was highly reasonable, I think we left a spoonful of rhubarb crumble.....nobody could polish it off......sorry

We did a test run before taking mother-in-law. Was great good variety on menu particularly the black pudding and pork belly. Decent portion size without being over the top. Staff very attentive. Good value. Mother-in-law thoroughly enjoyed her meal so that was praise indeed. We will definitely be back.

Very rude attitude from one member of the team. Waitress offered my partner something that wasnt part of a specific meal offer meaning we were charged £8 extra because of this despite us clearly stating we wanted the 2 courses for £13.50, one lady came from behind the scenes cane forward and basically said we were stupid to think we were in the right, why would an employee offer something that was clearly £8 extra?? Oh yes to gain more money!!!! Wont be returning EVER and will not be recommending to friends and family, visit and food was nice up to then however, the way we were spoken to was very uncalled for when we were in the right

Went as a foursome and had a great meal. The steak pie was my choice, washed down by one of the cask ales on offer. I finished my meal with a rhubarb crumble, accompanied by a jug of custard- terrific. Went with a wheelchair user - no problems over access. Everyone was in agreement - a really good meal in pleasant village pub surroundings. It is a pity it is not nearer to home in Carlisle as I would go more often.

We decided to go to the Aikton Arms to celebrate my daughters birthday. We were not disappointed it was a tasty meal, the portions sizes were excellent. We had a starter ad a main meal. the steaks were cooked to perfection with delicious chips. I would also recommend the Barnsley chop which was very tasty. I loved the dauphinoise potatoes. I would recommend visiting well worth it.

We called on the off chance and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of lunch. Vegetables cooked to perfection,generous helpings and good gravy. Beef was a little tough, but still tasty. We enjoyed dessert too - I had the gooseberry crumble with custard - lovely! Very good service too.

£13.50 for 2 excellently prepared home cooking. Well worth a visit for excellent food. Regular visitors and never been disappointed.

It's so nice to go somewhere where you don't have to feel awkward asking for gluten free food and then get amazing food and lots of choice. Of course all of the food was lovely and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the service was excellent.

We were a bit disappointed with the menu here. There were no healthy options. Everything was either cooked in batter or spicy. Steaks not cooked as asked for. A very small dish of vegetables for four people was put on the table. Food was okay. Wouldn't rush back.
