We stopped here last night after calling on the off chance for a table of 6 on the way home from the festival of lights at longleat. From the word get go the service was amazing so polite and helpful on the phone. We were greated at the door amd shown to our table. Where I waiter was absolutely amazing promptly took our drink and food order he was amazingly friendly a brill woth the children. You could tell he loved his job. Now the menu wasn't huge with a great deal of choice. But what was on there was fairly well priced. And I must admit I dint really expect a great deal but I have to say the food matched the service it was incredible well presented and absolutely full of flavour and the gravy on my dish wash to die for. For somewhere we just stopped out the blue I couldn't have wished to stop anywhere better. And next time we are in the area will be back. So if you looking for a family meal or evening something that little extra I would highly recommend this place. Top marks all round

We stayed at this beautiful venue with some friends and I must say everything was perfect! The staff were incredibly attentive and kind. We dined at their in house restaurant both nights and the food was superb! Chef was very accomodating to one of our friends with several dietary requirements and she said it was one of the best meals she ever had! Delicious food well presented at a reasonable price. The building itself is stunning and beautifully decorated with plenty of Christmas atmosphere. The rooms were immaculately clean, stylishly decorated with very comfortable beds. Breakfast was again, very well cooked with clearly high quality ingredients. Overall brilliant stay! Thank you to all the staff there! We will certainly be back!

We only had lunch.First impressions were very good, the whole place was absolutely spotless. I had belly pork ciabatta which was so good the meat was perfect for me.Sadly our friends ciabatta was wrong and it did take quite a while to put it right,we had to go on without him.The fish on the fish and chips was very small up to what we are used to being served but must day all our chips were delicious, good for the diet and fish has got very expensive. All in all a lovely old style country pub which I loved.

This is our first time to The Thatched Cottage and we left quite disappointed. The menu is very small so not much choice and everything that is on there is overpriced. Portion sizes are very small but the mains are to a good standard. Desserts however are very poor. I ordered sticky toffee pudding. Which the waiter even described as a brownie. It was very dry and lukewarm. The staff here however are excellent, very friendly, funny and welcoming. I would return here again but for drinks only.

We arrived, unbooked as a party of 4 for a Wednesday lunchtime in November. We looked for the fire...it wasn't lit. We had looked online and seen the ' senior citizens ' menu. We were told it wasn't available, despite being advertised on their website. ANSWER! UPDATE YOUR WEBSITE! We asked for 2x fish with mushy peas. No mushy peas.... Ok. Peas then...? No peas. Baked beans then? No. We served the last of the baked beans at breakfast.... This is shepton mallet, not outer Mongolia. There is a very large supermarket not 15 minutes away... Surely someone could go to a supermarket and ensure ' basics' are available. We were offered a side salad as an alternative. The ' side salad ' was pathetic. Green stuff... no tomato/ pepper/ anything else to bring ' colour'. The waiter ( who did his best, thoughout),hence the one star, had to be reminded to bring said ' salad'. £11 for an egg mayonnaise sandwich, ( with chips) was excessive. My chicken burger was good 👍. We asked for a discount on the bill. We were declined. The menu choice was limited, so you would hope that if you offer something you could deliver. Disappointing and overpriced.

Being local, we booked the Thatched Cottage for our wedding reception, and had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with our family. All of the staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. I stayed the night before, and we both stayed on our wedding night. Our room was incredibly comfortable with the heating spot on. There were a couple of niggles which were discussed, but it wouldn't be a proper wedding without! All in all we had a fabulous day, and thank Kieran and his team for their hard work. What a disappointment. We have eaten at The Thatch multiple times and the food, since being taken over by the new people, had been very good. I guess it is hard to maintain and not slip back to old habits. For a limited menu, 2 of the dishes were not available. OK, Storm Bert had been raging for 20 mins and deliveries may have been delayed....... Service was glacially slow, it took an age for the food to be served. I opted for a dish I have had twice before; Pork Belly. What a mistake. The pig must have died of natural causes with the amount of fat in it. The crispy kale looked remarkably like tender stem broccoli, that must have been waved over the pot to cook. The puree was too sweet and globbed all over the food. In fact the presentation of the food reminded me of a canteen dinner. Not wanting to be totally negative, the burgers did look ok and the chips were tasty. Moving onto desert; well they only had 2 available - a fruit crumble or ice cream. Storm Bert must have been bad. I hope they manage to regain the good food they have served before but not sure I am willing to risk going back. Perhaps the new Italian in town will be better?

We were visiting stem cell vets in nearby Bruton, on our way home from our holidays in Bournemouth. We stayed at the Thatched Cottage Inn for one night. I booked the executive room and it was fantastic. It was a huge room with sofa chairs and tv all home comforts. The bed was really comfortable too so had a great night's sleep. Tastefully decorated with a large bathroom, including separate shower cubicle and bath. We decided to have our evening meal in the pub and nothing was too much trouble. It was reduced menu due to a different chef, but I'd seen something else I wanted on the other menu. The owner ? Went to ask the chef if this was possible and they made it for me. Really tasty and well cooked. I also didn't go to breakfast as our dog had to starve for 12 hours due to her op but they made me a bacon and tomato sandwich to take away to eat later. Would definitely recommend and return if we are ever back down that way

After a morning at East Somerset Railway (15 August 2024) we stumbled across the Thatched Cottage Inn by chance and popped in to ask if they were serving food at 14:50. We received the warmest and friendliest welcome that we could have wished for from the two male staff members that we met (NB they have recently taken over so dont be misled by out of date reviews). Luckily the kitchen was open and all 3 of us chose the fish and chips which was wonderful. Lovely fish, great chips and mushy peas, all really well cooked. Great dining experience and good value. We are now thinking of going back (from South Wales) for their Friday music night and staying over.

Avoid .. turned up at lunch time around 10 of us, a bit early so waited in car park. Watched the manager speed in to car park and clean his rear window of his car! Then rushed in & opened the pub. We walked in to this guy (the manager I'm assuming) saying who are we ?? Mmm .. customers!! To a sign saying no food today, so we decided to have a coffee & drinks!! Hardly any draft drinks on & coffee machine not even turned on!! Waited ages for our drinks & the guy serving us was shaking, so coffee being spilt!! It's an amazing looking pub inside & out but new manager not so good. Sorry would love to score it highly but no customer service at all, we felt like we shouldn't of been there!! 😞

I had such a wonderful stay with the warmest of welcomes from all staff. The new owners were absolutely incredible and generous. I felt so safe and respected from them - they upgraded our room and offered us breakfast given that the previous owners had messed up our booking and out of the kindness of their hearts they honoured the deposit we had originally paid despite them not having received it when they brought the hotel. They has made clear efforts to make our stay perfect with new towels and the comfiest bedding. Welcoming us with warm smiles everytime we came in and really personable customer service throughout! I have every confidence that they will make the place delightful over time ☺️ Would highly recommend this hotel and encourage everyone looking at it to forgive any negative reviews whilst the transition from old to new owners was happening as it was totally out of their control!!!

The most bland and least amount of effort food I can remember. Paid £24 for a steak that was literally a bit of steak and some deep fat fried chips and 2 half cooked tomatoes. They just do not care at this place about presenting the food or anything but what I says on the tin, ask for steak and chips and you will get literally a bit of plain steak and plain chips. My Mum had a burger and chips and the only flavouring was the cheese. Bland, boring and overpriced. Service was good. Beautiful building such a shame and waste could be great.

This place could be lovely but it is so clearly unloved. From the outside it looks like a beautiful thatched cottage with ample seating. It has beautiful features like fire places and doorways. Unfortunately this was ruined by the Christmas lights still being up, years old covid posters in the toilets and a slight uncleanliness about the crockery and cutlery. Even the seat cushions were water marked and table had an oily film. We stopped by for a bite to eat at lunchtime, however unless we wanted a large meal, the only lunch options were sandwiches. Cheese and onion, cheese and tomato or ham and chutney. They were served on cheap supermarket bread with crisps or chips and no hint of a side salad for £10 each. The staff were polite and friendly except when we overheard a rude response when someone asked for the WiFi. This place has so much potential but I won’t be returning.

We used to use the pub every week for our Ukulele group. It was fine and we were treated well by the owner/manager. However this week when we asked for a drink 8.50pm we were told that the bar was shut, when this was questioned we were told to f*** off, and then another member of staff came over to tell us that we should listen to the bar staff and f*** off. Following this and a few days later a member of the group called the pub to speak to the manager. We didn’t speak to the manager, but another member of staff and again was told to f*** off and the “C” word was used and we were called peasants!!! So a perfectly nice enjoyable pub has gone rapidly down hill due to very rude staff.

Unfortunately this pub seems to have changed hands and is now nothing like it used to be. For a start the roasts used to be £13.95 or two courses for £18, it’s now £18 just for the roast, and £8 for dessert! The food was nothing to write home about, we had one single carrot with our roast dinner, and one parsnip cut in half. Not as good as it used to be, didn’t even have napkins put on the tables or salt and pepper so had to get them ourselves. Also they seem to have done away with paper menus and just write it on the blackboard now, which we were sat in a different room to… We used to go here often for family meals but think this will be our last visit unfortunately.

We have eaten here previously and it was good. Today was not so great. Pleasant staff in a lovely pub with a welcome fire on a miserable day. We had checked the website before booking and on arrival were handed a single sheet of A4 paper listing a Brunch Menu (for a lunch booking), which bore no resemblance to the advertised menu on their website. Staff advised that the website is "two years out of date." We chose their beef burger, which was a very disappointing choice. Small dry bun, a dry, tasteless burger, and a "cheat basket" of chips (we believe they are served in a chip basket to disguise the mean quantity served!). We asked for mayo, but they had run out! The young lady did come to ask us if the food was OK, but we had only just started eating it, so we were unable to really comment. £16 is a complete rip-off for this food offering. The ladies' loos were a disgrace. Water all over the floor and no loo paper. We were seemingly the first people in the pub that day, so we find this unbelievable. I told the young lady about the lack of loo paper early on in our visit, but nothing was done about it. We are former publicans, so we understand the issues faced by pubs, but this level of service is unacceptable these days. If we are spending £90 on four burgers and a few drinks, we need to feel that we've enjoyed value for money. This was, most definitely, not. A very disappointing way to end our Christmas break. Other pubs are available.

Our weekend here felt like a Fawlty Towers experience. Although the rooms were fine, the bar and restaurant were chilly and left a lot to be desired. The top of the stairway was obviously being used as a storage area and was unsightly. The watch words in both the bar and restaurant seemed to be "sorry, we don't have that!" Despite them being on the bar menu, there were no pork scratchings, no twiglets, only one draught beer and an extremely limited wine selection. I'd checked the dinner menu on the website before booking and was disappointed to find that this had been replaced by a far more expensive menu. Our first selection of salmon fish cakes was apparently unavailable. The curry was fine but a small portion for £16 and the steak was very poor for £23. At breakfast the toast was brought out but with no butter. It transpired that there was no butter or margarine available whatsoever which was quite unbelievable when you're offering bed and breakfast. We felt so sorry for the poor young waitress who was having to deal with all these issues and managed to keep smiling throughout. It's a real shame as the building itself is lovely but it feels like the management has given up.

We selected this hotel for a weekend away. Turned out to be extremely expensive for the standard provided In my opinion. Room rate was £89. Breakfast was £21.90 each. At the end of our stay the vibe was of a poorly managed and struggling hotel. No butter for the toast for breakfast!!! I felt sorry for the young waitress being put in the position of having to deliver this news, which is a never event in my opinion. I wasn't about to complain to her, she was so embarrassed but dealt with it with grace. In the evening we sat in the bar waiting for our table reservation, several people enquired about tables for an evening meal. One person asked for a table for six. Bar staff said they'd ask the chef... who said no, most bizarrely, as the restaurant was empty. Extremely strange. Our Room became smelly as above kitchen extractor. Ovens smelt dirty & at one point the fire alarm went off briefly. No Jack Daniels behind bar, a small matter to some. Room was spacious but unclean, cobwebs, dirty grout in bathroom and limescale on taps. Plus points Comfy bed. Food was hot. Nice burger. We would not go again.

Carelessness from the manager and chef… I ordered a glass of wine and it was goegen to me with dust on the outside of the glass ? I asked for a new one and again it was covered in dust.. There was a small set Sunday menu where I chose chicken roast there was No mention of bacon and it was served WRAPPED IN BACON !! The manager said that they can’t do much as it’s a temporary chef ? - it’s simple either change the menu or don’t serve chicken with bacon when it’s not on the menu? I personally don’t eat bacon due to my intolerance (Ibs) only white meat so to see my chicken smothered in bacon/ bacon juices was a joke since it’s not what I ordered… the rest of the Sunday lunch was served cold the lamb was cold barely any gravy on the dish and no choice for extra. Huge crusty Yorkshire pudding covering the plate, the stuffing was a paste that was NOT mentioned in the menu. Over all the manager said she can take of a small glass of wine off the bill but for £15 for a roast where you don’t get what’s ordered is shocking she blamed it all on the temporary chef ! Won’t recommend to anyone with food allergies/ intolerances as you will get the wrong order …

On arrival at the thatched cottage, we were told that we didn’t have a booking. The manager then rudely demanded some evidence of our booking (which was via email and confirmed by management) and then told us that even if they could seat us they didn’t have enough food. After the initial stubbornness from the manager about our booking being valid, she then said that this happens all the time - so really there was no need for her rude, abrupt demands of the booking evidence, a polite ‘let me look into this’ or ‘could you let me know who you booked with’ would have been sufficient. The chef did try to book us a table with another local restaurant, but 16 people for Sunday lunch without a booking is going to be a struggle! Safe to say that we won’t be returning to Shepton mallet’s fawlty towers.

We’ve just spent a wonderful overnight stay at this lovely little bar/restaurant/rooms. The room was spotless and had all amenities such as iron, tea/coffee and hairdryer. The bed was lovely and comfortable and we had a very good nights sleep (including an extra hour when the clocks changed). We had a meal in the restaurant which was delicious and good value for money. Breakfast was well cooked and well presented but be aware you do have to pay extra but was well worth it. Full English with all the trimmings. The bar and restaurant area was very olde worldie so don’t expect luxury surroundings but it was comfortable and more than adequate. Just a pity that we were the only ones partaking of the delicious food prepared by Bailey, the chef. Fleur, the manageress, was so friendly and welcoming and couldn’t do enough to make our stay so enjoyable, ably assisted by Kayla the lovely young waitress. Stayed here for 2 nights B&B with one evening meal. Pro’s - The guy running the place is extremely friendly and has a pleasant manner. We were served by the same young lady both for evening meal and breakfast and we have to say she was also very pleasant and polite. Cons - Having stayed here about 9 years before, the place has gone downhill. Our room “Godminster” was spoilt mainly by lack of cleanliness. After some water had got past the shower curtain ( over bath), it was dabbed up with the bath mat towel which revealed just how filthy the tiled floor was. See photo. There were long standing well established spiders webs in the bathroom and on the ceiling. Skirtings we’re shabby and dirty. The wardrobe was old and hand painted the finish was chipped. On the plus side the bed was super large and was comfortable. The TV was well placed and worked well. Unusually the bathroom had 2 sinks within the bathroom which was quite good. The room could have been made much better with some attention to detail, some fresh paint and a deep clean !!!! Evening meal - service itself was good, and staff were polite. We ordered pork chops with new potatoes, cabbage bacon and peas. We were both disappointed, particularly with the pork chop. I’m really not a fussy eater, and easily pleased so for me to say the chop was unpleasant really means it was. Cost was £16.00 Would I return - I’m afraid I have to say I would not. I paid £89 per night to stay in a dirty room which incidentally was not serviced at all. The tea, coffee and milk were not even topped up.

It's a pretty pub from the outside but has a poor range of drinks. I didn't try the food as there was a long wait

A real find! Wonderful 3 day stay at a beautiful old thatched inn. Staff def made our stay the best it could be. It seemed that nothing was too much trouble. Like everywhere these days they had a couple of staff shortages but unless we'd been told we would never have known. The staff all pulled together to provide excellent service. The chef's and kitchen staff deserve a special mention. The food as good as you'd find in any good restaurant! All in all excellent thoroughly recommended!

Enjoyed a delicious meal here last night while on holiday from Wales - food was absolutely stunning - which we relayed to the chef when we met him later - very good for his first day! Our waitress was a total beauty - her service was utterly impressive - she seemed to be everywhere all at once & still calm, attentive and beaming - definitely worthy of tipping. Would love to eat here again!

Had my wedding reception here in the function room and garden. The food was absolutely fantastic, and the bar staff kept the drinks flowing on an incredibly hot day. There were a few minor hiccups, but the landlord and staff handled it in their stride and invited us back for a meal on them to make up for any inconveniences. Will definitely keep the thatched cottage in mind for when we celebrate our anniversary ❤️

The sign says open all day for food from 12, how misleading. Arrived at 12.15pm to be asked if we had booked, we hadn’t. Was then told couldn’t order until 1pm. Went back at 1pm to be asked the same question & then told no we couldn’t order food. They weren’t exactly fully booked or even close. No customer service or explanation as to why food wasn’t available, but the sign needs to be changed as it’s not worth parking the car.

Had a couple of nights here while attending a friends wedding down the road. A very very good stay. Great room, comfy bed, welcoming and friendly staff. Couldn’t fault it. The food was good and some decent beer and single malts at the bar. Not too expensive either. It’s a shame we are a bit too far away to drop in when “Pro Quo” play next month. That will be a lot of fun. Thanks for having us.

My wife and i went to this lovely pub for lunch today (Easter Sunday) as it was my wife's birthday treat. As soon as we walked in with our cockapoo Berkeley, we were greeted with a very warm welcome, the atmosphere was so chilled and we were not disappointed with the 3 course meal we both had it was perfectly cooked with ample portions and absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend the Thatched Cottage to anyone who needs a lovely meal in a traditional country pub and at this point i would like to thank all the staff involved for a great experience.

Pleasantly surprised at the high standard of service presentation and quality of food in this quaint old country pub, food some Ala cartes could learn from but the thatched cottage still charges pub prices, if we return to this area of the country would we use the thatched cottage ?absolutely

Superb stay, amazing food and brilliant staff. Would recommend to anyone. Lovely big room, very comfy bed and evening meal was just delicious. We had the home made cottage pie and the pork chop, just great. If you are in the Shepton Mallet area you have to give The Thatched Cottage a visit.

We held a lovely retirement lunch here for one of our Directors. Ken and Saffron were extremely friendly and very welcoming and were not phased at all by lots of changes to our food pre order when members were dropping out one minute and then asking to be put back in again the next! Great food, great atmosphere and great location for us to use after our local area meetings. Thank you from Cooper and Tanner 😊

Wouldn’t normally post on here but any lack of management at the establishment or anyone member of staff who seemed to care means I have to write on here! Shocking service - miserable took 45 mins to get a drink & we had to go to the bar & interrupt their conversation to get one! The glasses were dirty with lipstick still on them The food arrived an hour later & we didn’t get all the veg ordered. When we asked about it she said I only put you down for 1 & then said I will knock your drinks off the bill (as if this was something they regularly do) no apology. We noticed a table behind us have similar issues & a group at the bar as we left querying their bill & service. So poor

Great place for food, dog and child friendly. Really enjoy eating here. Open into the evenings too. Breakfast not so great. Cooking skills could be improved! Very dirty stained milk jugs bit off-putting! Staff always lovely!

This needs some work, tired and run down, damp smell in corridors, no longer serves food including any breakfasts. The recommendation for breakfast was to say "go to Shepton Mallet there are places there". The bathroom in the room was ok but only giving 1 sachet of coffee and 1 mug in a double room with two people is just being tight. The floor didn't look as if it had been vacuumed. The photo is from the room window showing drums of old cooking oil and dumped rubbish which looked as if it had been there for a while. Needless to say I would not recommend this place until it has been overhauled.
