That Little Teashop in the Lanes in Brighton and Hove

Great pots of tea & lovely food catering for coeliac & vegan needs. Sadly, the experience was marred by an off-hand member of staff who was overheard making hostile comments towards an elderly lady sitting with her family.

Great little teashop that caters for coeliac, vegans & vegetarians. I had a gluten free ham & tomato sandwich today & it was no trouble asking to have it without butter or margarine as the sandwiches are made fresh. The gluten bread was lovely & soft, one of the best I've had

Can't believe the main chap Jay is leaving after many years! Me and my husband have been coming here a couple times a week for the last few years. I haven't left a review before but wanted to voice mine and my husband's opinions on the wonderful people that work here and that we have always enjoyed the scones and sandwiches and range of teas they have on offer. Such a shame about Jay as he was the reason this place does so well. But after hearing about the owner living in Spain from other team members and never visiting the shop itself it is just such a pitty he can't see the work everyone puts in. Not sure we will be back once Jay leaves. The new staff have big boots to fill. Maybe a new manager might be able to give the shop a much needed face lift, but we will have to see whether they bring the same charm, energy and welcome. Possibly a goodbye to our Brighton staple. Good luck in your future venture Jay.

Nice pot of tea and a tasty slice of cake! Small place so advisable to book in advance. Service was friendly and efficient.

A cozy little tea shop with good atmosphere. The tea and scones, slotted cream etc. all good. The waitress seamed a little stressful, but got the job done. So the atmosphere could have been a bit more relaxed, but it's not a big deal, service is all good.

Looking for a pot of tea and a coffee ☕ to get out of the wind and stumbled across That Tea Shop in the lanes. Extremely welcoming and nothing too much trouble. Spotted the yummy looking cakes and scones on the counter so had to add to our order. Delicious cake and scone, pot of tea and a hot chocolate. Can only Highly Recommend a pit stop at That Tea Room in the Lanes to anyone visiting Brighton.

We had afternoon tea here, as we have read a lot of good reviews, but unfortunately we were disappointed. There’s only one sandwich/cake option per person, not like the more common afternoon tea were you get a variety of sandwiches and cakes in a set menu. The cakes were also way to sweet and to bland. I would not recommend this place - unless you just wanted tea and scones, as the scones were actually really nice!

My friend visiting from the states wanted a traditional cream tea. We read reviews and were looking forward to trying this at That Little Teashop in the Lanes. We hadn’t booked and arrived in the afternoon. When we came in we were told that they were expecting a large party and there was no room inside. We sat outside. The server told us there was only 1 scone left. This was fine, I decided to have cake instead and we said we’d take this last scone. However, the server then left and didn’t return for our order. I went in to look at the cake options and went back outside. Our order still wasn’t taken. A table of two inside left after finishing. I went in to ask if we could take this table. Before I could ask this I was told to go back out and someone would take our order. I asked about the inside table and was told yes and that it would take a few minutes to clear. I went outside to get my friend and we started to move towards the table. We were told not to come in yet and that it would take a few minutes to clear the table. This seemed unreasonable, as we could certainly have sat down to wait. By this point, we felt so unwelcome and as if we were an inconvenience because of the large party that was booked for after that we left.

Servers were nice but not very observant, a table at the tea shop was full of empty plates and cups for the entire time we were there. They were also out of clotted cream and didn’t tell us until after we’d ordered and gotten our tea. The tea was also so weak that it tasted like water and had almost no colour. It’s also expensive, and definitely not worth paying that much for

We had a very enjoyable afternoon eating the absolute best sandwiches and scones cream and jam. The amazing thing was two of our family are gluten free and they said the gluten free scones were the best they had ever eaten. Also the gluten free bed was delicious too. Thank you so much to the friendly helpful staff for making our afternoon one to remember. Thank you for all your hard work. Can't wait to visit again soon.

We booked for afternoon tea in April but had to change the date to May, I used the contact us form on their website and this was changed with no issue. A lovely little tea shop in the lanes is exactly what the name suggests. We had the meeting house afternoon tea which included a sandwich of our choice, a scone with jam and cream, a cafetière of coffee and a slice of cake of our choosing. I loved the fact we could choose which sandwich we wanted as normally we end up leaving the egg mayonnaise and the smoked salmon sandwiches as they’re not to our taste. Everything was beautifully presented, the sandwiches were freshly made, coffee was smooth and the scones melted in your mouth. We ended up taking the slice of cake home with us as we were too full to eat it. The staff were all lovely, we were given time to choose what we wanted without feeling rushed and we didn’t have to wait too long for our order to arrive. Will definitely visit again.

Yummy!!! Had the afternoon tea and could not finish it. Cake taken away. Worth the money, great value, friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Will definitely be back.

We had pre-booked a table on a Saturday lunch time. I'm a coeliac and so had rung ahead and emailed to ensure that gluten free afternoon tea would be available. I got an email confirmation of this. I was disappointed at first when we turned up as there was no note on the booking and so no gf scones for me. Such a shame. Thankfully, they were able to provide a gf lunch for me and I was very reassured about their careful procedures and knowledge of cross contamination. There was a bit of a wait for food, but it was prepared fresh to order. After lunch I was glad to see that there was a really wide selection of gf cakes. I had a raspberry and lemon and it was delicious. My mum had chocolate and Amaretto which was amazing! We would come back as the food was great, but they do need to sharpen up on their bookings to ensure that special diets are noted.

I can thoroughly recommend this tea shop, as a chance to spoil yourself. It is run by a very pleasant lady and gentleman, who both provide a superb personal service Myself and my wife both had the fruit scone, jam and clotted cream. As well as the prawn mayonnaise sandwiches and I had the beef and horse radish sandwiches. I regret that I was unable to finish, my superb granary beef sandwiches. My wife finished off with an additional large slice of a very nice carrot cake. I also recommend the loose-leaf tea, as it is so much better than the usual tea bags that I put in my tea mug at work. Furthermore, I made a booking online through their website, as I was not sure if they may be busy when we arrived. I recommend doing this also if you have a group of three or more, as it also allows you to also contact them about your food & drink requirements. As the staff were running out of some items when we were there,

A gorgeous independent tea shop. The kind where their sandwiches are truly stuffed with filling. And a warm cheese scone. Yummy. All delightfully hand made with love. Thank you for a yummy lunch.

Went in here for a sandwich, tea and a piece of home made cake, all were excellent as were the friendly staff. It was so good we went back next day for a cream tea and another piece of cake! Again all were delicious.

That Little Teashop es una tienda de té muy antigua con una decoración a juego (platos decorados con el retrato de la Reina Madre y demás) y horribles canciones de 1900 en el PA.Tomé té con crema de la tarde, que era muy bueno, debo decir. Pero dicen pasteles en los menús, pero por lo que pude ver, no había elección.Sin embargo, la decoración y la música me hicieron huir a una mesa de afuera y noté que otra pareja migraba por el mismo camino.¡Entonces noté la suciedad en el piso a lo largo de la pared y en la base de la ventana llena de suciedad, polvo y cabello!El baño no estaba mejor. Polvo por todas partes, yeso pelado y sin papel higiénico.Puedo apreciar la tendencia de lo retro, pero esta tienda de té debería traer los estándares y el ambiente de higiene de 21 Street Century. Esta es una oportunidad tan perdida que no puedo entender que los propietarios de cafés sean tan negligentes con sus instalaciones y las vibraciones que envían. La gente parecía positivamente incómoda por dentro.Para colmo, el café cierra a las 4 pm. Has sido advertido.

Buscamos un lugar para tomar un brunch, al pasar por la pequeña Teashop. Inesperado. Parecía agradable, así que le preguntamos a la amable señora si había lugar. Ella nos mostró 2 mesas afuera. Un buen menú con mucha variedad. Pedimos "Un té de la tarde" para 3. Este consistía en una taza de té, un bollo (con crema y mermelada) y un sándwich a elegir. Las chicas pidieron té y un bollo y tarta de queso tostada.Buen té de degustación, bollos calientes recién preparados y buenos sándwiches. Una de mis chicas pidió chocolate caliente, no té. Ella estaba malcriada.Seguramente volveremos cuando estemos.Gracias !

Pasé una hora del té muy agradable aquí con mi amiga Mirei, de Japón. El té con crema es delicioso, los bollos son exquisitos (aunque me gustaría que pudieras conseguir dos en lugar de uno en cada pedido. Aún así, es un lugar agradable y acogedor, perfecto para un buen descanso por la tarde. El personal es muy amable también y tienen baños limpios y todo lo que pueda necesitar, entonces, ¿qué más se puede pedir?

This wasn't our first visit to this tea shop and in the past we'd found it to be a perfectly pleasant experience. All our previous visits had been as a couple though.This time we were with friends and it was quite busy. The only free table was set with 3 chairs but all of the tables for 4 were occupied by couples so it was not difficult to find the extra chair we needed. So far, so good. Our server then asked if we're going to have something to eat. That was when the weirdness started. Our server got quite agitated and asked if we would prefer to split up into 2 pairs. Yeah, I know. Weird huh?We asked for an explanation but got none. The only thing she said was that she would have to speak to her manager. Moments later he comes to our table, takes out a notepad and pen and says "Right guys, what can I get you?" We ask for a couple of simple sandwiches and a couple of slices of cake with a pot of tea between us. He then flips out and says he was sorry but that he would have to ask us to leave. Again, no explanation, just sling your hook. All completely weird. We used to recommend this tearoom to all our friends but I would strongly encourage anyone to give it a wide berth now. Such a pity.

Every time we visit brighton this is our place to go. The staff are always lovely and friendly.. the food is nice especially the apple pie or the scones. Its a nice atmosphere and the music is nice.. it fits in with the theme of the shop. Definately recommend!!

What a great little tea and cake shop in the lanes Brighton, very quaint charming place, great cake, and great selection too, tea was lovely in old fashion tea pots and mugs. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

We love this place. Tiny, friendly and quirky it’s very Brighton. Two teas and a delicious warm scone and cream as a break from a hard day sightseeing and shopping. Perfect!

I had the eggs Benedict even though they were with scrambled and not poached it does state it on the menu and an Earl Gray tea.. the eggs and holondase sauce were lovely. Good service and good value

Very nice little Tea shop , I had booked for 2 for afternoon tea. We were 30 mins erly, but staff were very kind and helpful. Tea was very good and the sandwiches were great aswell and the fresh hot scones were wounderful . Will definitely be returning soon .

Very good scones. I’d say the number two best I ever had. All parties home baked. Friendly staff. Very small, so prepare to wait for your table. We could sit outside on the small (two tables) terrace, but you couldn’t fit a pram inside.

Just wonderful..... a little gem amongst shops with gemstones. Just One criticism to put on here if you order one cream tea you get one small dish of jam and cream... if you order two cream teas you still just get one jam and one cream which you have to share and scrape out.... shop busy and by the time time it took me to catch the attention of the waitress we had almost finished.... despite that we will return let's see your things have changed....

Whilst wandering the lanes we stumbled upon this quaint and charming tea shop. I thought what a lovely place to have a pit sroo, recharge and also get mum a bit of birthday cake.

Popped in here for a quick tea with one of my in-laws. I really loved it, so quaint. Vintage is a wonderful style and I loved how everything is themed. Staff were also full of recommendations on where to go in the area. Bit crammed but it is so worth it. Will 110% return.

I don’t often visit tea shops in the Lanes as they are generally full of tourists. However I’m very glad I popped into that Little Teashop in the Lanes. It’s quite small but still has plenty of tables & it even has a few tables outside. I was also early enough that I was able to avoid the rush.

The food and service was amazing. We both had a slice of white chocolate and raspberry cake as well as a banana, strawberry and raspberry smoothie and it was delicious! The staff were very friendly and the teashop was nicely decorated and clean. Would definitely return!

We stopped here for a lovely cream tea with scones, jam & cream. The scones were still warm from the oven and lovely and light. With plenty of jam and clotted cream for both of us, accompanied by a big pot of tea with China cups and saucers. Heavenly! Would certainly recommend

Was looking for a nice little unique place for lunch in the lanes stumbled across this lovely little tea shop. Ordered the afternoon tea for two as was a great deal at £18 food was beautiful, quirky interior and staff were lovely would definitely recommend !

Absolutely spot on experience! We had afternoon tea for three and everything was just perfect. A selection of fresh sandwiches and warm scones was nicely presented and served by very friendly employees. The location is also great.

Real tea in cute teapots. We stopped for lunch on the hottest day of the year. The tea shop was in a shady spot so we enjoyed lingering. I am gluten free but that was no problem with the helpful staff, a delicious toasted sandwich and very tasty Bakewell tart later we wandered off, very happy.

It is the little tea shop in the lanes , it is like stepping back in time , the staff were delightful and the tea and coffee delicious , well worth a visit whilst winding your way through the lanes shops .

This little tearoom is charming, very well priced, and also quite hidden away in the Lanes of Brighton. If you're looking for a cream tea or cake or toasted sandwich, you can't go wrong here. I had the quiche and salad which was homestyle and tasty for about 5 pounds. Simple, understated and friendly establishment. Not suitable for large groups.

We had coffee/hot chocolate and cake in this quirky little cafe on a Saturday afternoon. The cafe was busy as you would imagine however service was good. Carrot cake was delicious. Would recommend this lovely place.

What an excellent experience. If you're looking for an authentic South Coast snack, this place come ls highly recommended. The Service was welcoming, particularly by the front of house Ginger (name is Jay or Jamie I believe). Competitively priced and most of the menu is homemade! Hurrah!

We discovered this cafe by accident but a happy one. We went in quite late, one hour before closing. We got 2 fresh scones and a tea for 2. well, homemade scones never tasted so good. We chomped them down so fast.

Popped in with my sister and two daughters for lunch and really enjoyed it! The staff are lovely and helpful, and even asked if my daughter actually wanted salad on her plate (obviously know how picky kids are!) The sausage roll I had was really tasty and obviously homemade!! Portions are just right and service fantastic! Will pop in here again in the future!

We wanted somewhere to stop and have a drink while exploring Brighton but when we saw the food we decided we had to try it. myself and my daughter both had sandwiches and hot chocolate and they were delicious! The staff are really friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. It is small, but if you can get a table it is well worth it.

We sought it out based on high reviews and expected a great little place. The reality is that it is ok. No choices of coffee, just filter, tea was just tea, sandwiches and cakes were good but nothing spectacular. This is an average cafe. Staff are friendly, seating was comfortable. Prices are for tourists.

Having walked past here many times when wandering in The Laines, we were lucky enough to spot inside this cosy teashop when we wanted a quick lunch.

Found this lovely tearoom shortly after our arrival in Brighton. Excellent green tea and scrumptious vegan chocolate cake. The manager was extremely friendly and we made a point of going there on each day of our stay and we will return on another visit to Brighton.

Cannot thank these guys enough, after emailing ahead to reserve a table for my wifes birthday we visited at the weekend for a quick tea and cake. The staff were extremely accommodating for us with our 7 month and his buggy, and even managed to get a candle to go in my wife's cake for me! On top of this, the food was fab, atmosphere just perfect. Lovely little traditional tea room and will definitely be visiting again. Thank you

Ein kleines, supersüßer Tearoom, wo wir eine englische Teatime genossen haben. Ich liebe das unterschiedliche Geschirr und das Besteck in der Teekanne. Die Scones mit clotted cream und Marmelade sind superlecker, auch die glutenfreie Variante.

Het restaurant ziet er super gezellig uit en is heel schattig van binnen. Er is niet veel ruimte, maar de bediening komt naar je tafel, ook voor het afrekenen. De bediening is ontzettend vriendelijk en er hangt een fijne sfeer. Vergeleken met andere cafés in Brighton ook goedkoop. De scones zijn verrukkelijk! Ik kom hier zeker een keer terug.

We were looking for somewhere for a quick cup of tea but stayed for cream tea and cake because it all looked so good !

Popped in for drink and cake lots of choice, waitress just seemed to be rushed as the coffee shop was full, small pot of tea no hot water left thirsty , cooked food looked ok, not a lot of atmosphere.

Two of us popped in for lunch, were greeted by an extremely friendly member of staff and had a lovely sandwich and pot of tea. Then we just HAD to go for a slice of cake which was absolutely delicious. Would thoroughly recommend.

Really yummy food and friendly staff. We would thoroughly recommend this tea shop. Perfect place to stop and recharge whilst shopping in the Lanes.

This is such a lovely little tea shop. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food is homemade and is delicious. I had a fruit scone fresh from the oven, it was light and very tasty especially with the indulgence of jam and cream! The sandwiches are made to order and there’s an excellent choice of fillings. There’s a good choice of hot and cold dishes, really worth a visit.
