This is a great East London institution. I love bringing out of town guests here. Food is great but I think you need to order with care. Noisy and bustling so great for groups but not so much for a romantic date. Very cheap and BYO. It's quieter at lunchtime when service is so quick you can get back to the office in time with a cab to the City or the Elizabeth Line to Canary Wharf. Because there are not many off licenses in this part of Whitechapel we always buy wine at the Tesco on the western end of Fieldgate St if we are coming for dinner. We start with the plain salad, pappadoms and sauces that are brought when the table is set. I like to dress my salad with the spicy green chutney. We always order the signature grilled lamb chops, chicken tandoori, and seekh kebab to start. I've heard that the tikkas can be a bit tough and I have been disappointed with the prawns and fish grilled starters in the past. The curry mains can be disappointing. But the dahls, baby pumpkin and dry meat are always dependably great. Don't miss the homemade bread. The naan's are delicious but swimming in butter so also order a roti or two if you want a less decadent bread for mopping up curries. Service is very efficient though sometimes timing can be haphazard, with for example arrival of bread. It's always a great experience though. They do now take bookings and I would recommend that which shortens the wait time to under 5-10 minutes. It's great value. A copious meal for four came to £91 including service charge.

I really like this place for its lovely food. I had dinner at Tayyabs Restaurant yesterday with my friend, and overall, the experience was pleasant. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and we especially enjoyed the chicken biryani – it was flavorful and well-prepared. However, we found the korai gosht to be quite disappointing, as it lacked flavor entirely. There’s definitely room for improvement in both food consistency and service quality. We hope to see some positive changes on our next visit,

Very disappointed, our family has been going to this restaurant for 25 years, we are friend with the owners and are families have shared so many happy moments together. I went in last night on my own as I was missing the famous tastes that are unique to taayabs…the staff were so rude and so ignorant, kept me waiting despite seating other guests that hadn’t pre booked, as I know it’s very busy I didn’t complain…but are 35mins another waiter came and asked my why I was standing there. Only to be told the restaurant was fully booked, even though there was 7 empty table in the section of the restaurant I was in. Sad, but I will never ever set foot into this place again.

Date: 30th April 2025 Cost: £35pp What words can be written about Tayyabs that haven’t been written before? I’ve read many of them: the potted, almost mythological origin stories of the place and subsequent rags-to-riches histories of the two generations of the Tayyab family to have run it; the slightly boastful claim of Jay Rayner to have worked out – via a visit to the restaurant kitchen – and then printed as a “scoop” the secret spice mix marinade of the lamb chops; the news articles about one such chop getting launched into orbit in order to promote someone’s novel; the family interviews accompanying award wins; and the endless collection of dubious amateur reviews available online, to which I’m about to add. Yet the institutional glory – its online shop sells branded caps, postcards and ‘chop-o-holic’ t-shirts – of Tayyabs still must be seen to be, if not believed, at least fully appreciated. It’s huge – having incorporated so many adjoining pubs, cafes and sweetshops over the years that Theseus might have struggled with it – purple, and pure chaos. Amongst the sights (random unrelated news articles in frame with celebrity mugshots on the walls and an incredible moustache on one of the waiters), sounds (the sizzle of hot-plated dishes whizzing past one ear and the peals of Amy peer-pressuring me into drinking an individual bottle of birthday Prosecco deafening the other) and smells (Laurie was told he smelt of cigarettes when he got home, such was the smokiness of some of the food coming out), I didn’t quite know what to do with myself. So I ordered a shitload of starters for the table and just went along with it all. There were popadoms (obviously), veggie samosas, pakora, cubes of chicken tikka bites, loins of masala fish and enough of those chops – the main reason I’d picked the restaurant in the first place – that everyone who wanted to could try one and I wouldn’t be left with regrets if they really were as nice as all those words I’d read had said they would be. They were and they weren’t. They were kind of skeletal, the sort of chops that look nice and generous but then once you’ve gnawed any meat away they’re the same shape as when you started. The flavour though, in fairness, was excellent. I was just in the middle of making mental speculations as to the spices when about forty waiters swarmed around the table with our mains, plonking them anywhere there was room with no heed whatsoever as to who ordered what: on top of unfinished starters, window sills, peoples laps, the floor. It wasn’t quite that bad, but it was, like I say, pure chaos. We’d asked for extra dhals, bhindi and paneer too – as well as rice and naans – so after a quick initial adjustment you kind of just ate what was in front of you, because if you picked up a dish another would instantly take its place and you’d be stuck holding something instead of eating. Also I didn’t really want to share my ‘Dry Meat’ (actually the name of the dish) anyway – by far the best thing I ate all evening. The ‘dry’ was relative – like someone caught in a monsoon with an umbrella and anorak – and the meat was more lamb, more mysterious exotic spicing, but fewer osseous obstacles this time; just beautiful, almost brisket-like tenderness. Other standouts were the tarka dhal, the bhindi, the naans and, weirdly, the leftover picked-at pakora from the starters. A lot of the rest was very decent Punjabi fare, but not trek to Whitechapel-decent, and I think most of the others would say the same. I’m glad we did though, even if to just experience it off the page. [Top tip: avoid the enterprising bottle-shop next door and its unpriced drinks if you want to spend less than you would on booze than in your averaged licensed restaurant.]

No one stays at the top forever. These guys used to be good and I would recommend but not any more. My recent trip encountered rude staff, smaller portions (ok I agree smaller portions are better for us but then shouldn't they lower the price accordingly?), food not cooked properly, excessive oil around the food. I had to reject and send items back. When we initially sat down they gave us poppadoms which were soft and stale. Clearly the standards are falling along with the quality. I will not return. Yesterday visited again after a long time and bought some desserts for take away. Asked for a disposable spoon and the staff refused, I asked politely a few more times and they said no. On the way out I approached the manger behind the counter and complained, he asked a waiter who brought us 2 plastic spoons. Thank you to the manager but the staff are unmotivated and need more training on customer service

Tayyabs is a bit of an institution in Whitechapel so was keen to try it. Honest review was not great, food was pretty average, menu is small and I get the impression everything is precooked and then just heated up, it was brought to the table 5 mins after ordering. Starter prices are OK but they charge £25, for a large curry and it's not even much bigger than a small which is £13. Our bill came to over £80 without drinks and honestly felt a bit shafted. They automatically add 12% service charge and although service was OK not really warranted. I wouldn't go again and I wouldn't recommend any to go, far better options out there.

Very unimpressed by the food. Their much hyped lamb chops? These had shockingly little meat on them and that meat was tough: it’s obvious they use cheap lamb and use the meat that should be on your chops as some of the stew meat for their lamb curries. The chops had big bones, just forgot the meat… And it goes on. The chutneys on the table have been so watered down that it’s sad. With competition like this you can see why Dishoom has built such a big business: Tayyabs and its ilk are practically pushing clients to them. I certainly won’t return.

We visited this restaurant after watching review video on YouTube. It was said that the restaurant gets very busy so we already reserved a time while being in the Netherlands. We arrived a bit earlier but it was not a problem as it was not the rush hour yet. We ordered the grilled lamb chops, sheesh kebab and lamb karahi. The grilled lamb chops were simply fantastic and so were the sheesh kebabs. The lamb karahi was tasty but it was not as special as the other two. We ordered few naan breads with the meal and they were also very nice. If you like grilled kebabs and lamb chops, definitely pay them a visit. Compared to the price and quality that we get in the Indian restaurants in the Netherlands, I would say it is much much better.

This is our first time visiting the restaurant after 2 years and the craze is still the same. We went for dinner and it was really busy and everyone was queueing up to get seated. Well, after a 15-20mins wait, we managed to get our table. Seating is across three floors so you will definitely get your place. Now, coming to food, we got papadums and chutneys as soon we sat down. For starters, we tried their signature Lamb Chops, Tandoori Chicken and Grilled Fish. Each one of them were of high quality and delicately prepared. The expectations went high and for the Mains, we had Kadhai Lamb, Kadhai Chicken and Chana Masala. All of them impressed us. The Tandoori Naans were soft, fluffy and tasty. Overall, very highly recommended however do go in with some time in hand. We'll located in walking distance to Whitechapel and Aldgate East tube stations. ‐---------------------------------------------------------- Nothing changed even after 3 more years that is good. Tayyabs is an East London icon — loud, lively, and unapologetically flavourful. It’s the kind of place where the energy is electric, the aroma hits you the moment you walk in, and the food speaks for itself. The lamb chops are hands down the star of the show — smoky, tender, and perfectly charred with just the right amount of heat. The chicken tikka is another winner — juicy, well-marinated, and fresh off the grill. Pair that with hot, pillowy naan or their crispy, buttery garlic paratha, and you’re in for a treat. The Mutton Karahi is rich, robust, and deeply spiced — a proper hearty dish that’s full of depth. The Chicken Saag, with its creamy spinach base and tender meat, brings a lovely balance to the table. Service is fast-paced but efficient, and the staff know the menu inside out — they’ll happily guide you if you’re unsure. Whether you’re here for a big feast or just a plate of those iconic chops, Tayyabs never disappoints. Just be sure to book ahead — queues are real, and rightly so!

Popudums were ok, but again mango chutney and mint sauce were very watered down. Our starters of mix grills were nice. The paneer was good and our vegan guest had pakoras. We asked for a few dishes to take home, including plain naans and a keema naan, these were all wrapped together until we pointed out the vegan wouldn’t be able to eat the plain naans as mince meat was in the foil too. We had very little customer service and things seemed to be trouble for asking. We were not asked if we wanted drinks, a coffee took two reminders. We didn’t stay for curry’s as it all took so long. On asking for the bill, the one portion of pakoras turned into 6 (£24!) so glad we checked the bill. To add £11 service charge too, felt a little much when there was constant issues or we had to ask for more salad. Would we return or recommended, highly unlikely.

Starters felt like it was microwaved and placed on a sizzling pan to appear like it was freshly cooked, but it was dry and lacked flavour and possibly cooked a few days ago! The main was lacking in taste and once again not freshly cooked. The mango lassi had water in it. When I questioned the waiter if it had water in it, he claimed there was no water and walked off. Poppadoms were offered initially, assuming it was complimentary, but we were charged. I later noticed there was a service charge right at the bottom of the sub total which we didn't realise! I would not have paid for the charge if I had noticed. When I asked for the receipt, the waiter pretended he didn't hear me and walked off with the receipt. I believe this was so we don't notice the service charge. I did take a photo of it. Lastly I felt like I was being pushed out as soon as I had finished eating! The positives were the poppadoms were fresh and complimentary wet tissues and choclate which was a nice gesture. Would I return? No,

Worst experience ever. Because of the staff's attitude, I will never go back, and I will make sure to tell everyone I know to avoid this place. If anyone considers going, I will strongly advise them against it. (1) As soon as we sat down, they served Popadoms without saying a word and later charged us the Popadoms. After paying bill, when we asked why they charged it , the staff blatantly lied, saying, "We ALWAYS ask before serving Popadoms." None of the four people in our group heard any such question. In fact, when the Popadoms arrived, we even commented, "Oh, I guess this is complimentary bread before the meal." When we checked the bill upon leaving, asking why they charged us without informing us beforehand, a manager-looking guy in a blue shirt responded condescendingly, saying, "You're the only one who has ever questioned this." I told him that the issue wasn’t about the £4 charge—it was about their deceptive practice of serving food without consent and then charging for it. He eventually admitted that this was a tricky business tactic on their part. (2) Right after we paid, they immediately took away the bill. When we asked for a receipt, the staff’s expression changed completely, and they stared at us. Looking back, I now realise they were probably worried we would notice the extra charge and complain. This is not about a few pounds—it's about the shameless attitude of the staff and their deceptive business practices. Absolutely disgraceful.

It was extremely busy and noisy in the restaurant. Staff was friendly, food was very tasty. Fast and efficient operation. Definitely not pricey, value for money. Try to avoid going to the toilet, very filthy, dirty toilets unfortunately...

The food is really good, but the experience was disappointing. There was utter chaos when I arrived, and was made to wait in the middle of the restaurant in some kind of queue. It did seem however that some people were invited to jump the queue. Once seated, they serve poppadoms, which subsequently appear as extras on the bill even though they were not ordered, and then they also add a 12,5% “discretionary service charge”, which did not really seem discretionary at all. The lamb chops were very tough, but the dried lamb was really delicious. Conclusion: the food shows some glimpses of why the restaurant would have received the best curry award a few decades ago, but I’m not convinced that the total experience is worth it.

If you have any sense of taste, this place is NOT for you. Not only is their food bottom of the barrel and extremely expensive, it's not fresh. They put water and poppadoms on table pretending its complimentary BUT they are £3 and £7 respectively (YES £7 FOR 5 POPPADOMS). They add more then 10% service charge (non optional) AND to top it all off, they give you plastic bags to take away your left over food in. please save your money and go to anywhere else but here. P.S they put beef in the lamb dish which gave my sister an allergic reaction as she's allergic to beef. Dangerous and reckless.

An amazing restaurant—truly a legend and a landmark of London town! A great institution, serving honest, beautiful food made with love and passion, always staying true to its values. With remarkable consistency since the 1970s, it remains a culinary treasure. Long live Tayyabs!

The order did not arrive until 1940. The restaurant is about a 5 minute cycle away. The timing kept moving backwards. I had guests waiting, and the food was cold by the time it arrived.

This isn’t a recent visit - though I did do a takeaway few weeks back and Jay Rayner’s immortalisation in his cookbook makes me go back memory lane. I went here in 2016 on a recommendation whilst my days as a grad student at the LSE and homesick for some decent North Indian food. Technically it isn’t “North Indian” but broadly “Punjabi” and this is, I assume pre-Partition. I had lovely memories of eating through Old Delhi during my college days - a slice of history that the city was preserving in the changing political climate through culinary traditions. The food at Tayyabs was absolutely fantastic and I’d take my friends (and even my Polish BF turned husband back then - first taste of real curry, tandoori, naan etc) to give them a “taste of home”… We both had an ongoing joke about how we got to Tayyabs before it got famous and all buzzing… Gorgeous curries, decadent Peshawari Naans and if I remember well, even Phirni to finish and wash it down with Lassi. Back then, I don’t believe people knew about Jay Rayner and Tayyabs together- which was great because it was less crowded - and probably the food was more to my liking, luscious, rustic and closer to home. I must admit that I’ve lost the old enthusiasm to hop to behind Ali Altab to eat but I must - if not for anything but to re-write this again. But definitely old school goodness and one of my only reasons back then to take the bus 78/15 from Bermondsey to Aldgate.

I am incredibly disappointed, I came with my elderly parents for iftar, we drove over an hour to bring them here as they like the restaurant . I tried to call to book but there was no answer. When I arrived all I did was ask if we could get a seat due to iftar and my parents being elderly, the receptionist then became incredibly rude to me saying what do you want , do you want to move people instead , I was instead again just trying to explain bht instead he was still rude.

The food was so bad, we were totally ripped off with those ridiculous prices. We ordered tikka masala and it was literally DRENCHED IN OIL! Are we eating oil or are we eating curry sauce? It was disgusting and tasted so bad. None of the food was tasty or flavoursome at all, it was just spicy as hell. Even the paneer tikka tasted so bland, unfresh, cheap and gross. They had the audacity to charge us a £6+ service charge (which we of course didn’t pay) even after we complained about the oil. Instead of apologising they want to scam us even further for a ‘service’ charge as if they deserve it Extremely disappointing experience, will never come back here again.

First of all, the spice is very strong. Instead of thinking of the curry we usually make in England, it is better to think of it as a spicy curry with lots of coriander and spices. Ugh! Spice?! If you do something I don't like, I will never criticize you. And it's really salty.

Wagamama’s a classic around the world, if you haven’t tried it yet, you might as well come. I’ve heard it’s Asian/Japanese, I am not entirely sure what it means. What I do know is that the food is food, there’s plenty of options and things you can play around with. I can’t say I’d recommend coming here as an absolute when you’re around the area, but if you are around and feel like some simple Asian food without having to spend too much it is a solid option.

Ordered last night. Took 10 minutes to be ready which I thought oh wow that’s impressive. Got home Mrs tucked into the lamb and it was tough as boots. Ate some anyway as she was hungry, been up since 4 with stuff coming out both ends! Food poisoning from what I assume is the meat being blasted in the microwave or something.
