Taste of Gurkhas in East Devon

We are regular customers here and the food is always outstanding. We are treated more like family than customers...never rushed...and the staff are not only polite but very friendly. Having dined in many Nepalese and Indian restaurants in the past...I can firmly recommend The Brave Gurkhas at Honiton for fantastic cuisine and friendly atmosphere.

Regular curry club meeting, and as usual fabulous food and service. We come here once a month , and couldn't fault it. We won't be changing venue.

This was immense. This was seriously the best lamb Biryani I've ever had, and my friends mixed grill was superb. Lovely staff who were extremely welcoming, and delicious beers such as Cobra and Gurkha too! Will HIGHLY recommend.

We’ve always had a good experience before but our last visit wasn’t for me. My wife enjoyed her meal but my chilli chicken Nepali was disappointing. There was very little chicken and what was there seemed to be scraps that were battered and fried. Tough and chewy pieces which for a main meal costing £10.50 is not good enough.

Fantastic Indian restaurant. Food very good and taste plus reasonably priced. Highly recommend. Also use takeaway regularly.

An absolutely excellent meal. The lamb tikka was superb and side dishes all extremely good. Really not expensive either. We will definitely be back.

Food was lovely, they went above and beyond too we got an extra poppadom. Also when it came to ordering main course they were happy to give me lamb and chicken Tikka style rather than just lamb and chicken, for which I was grateful. Mum enjoyed her biriani too. Portions are generous and restaurant is fairly tidy and clean. Very pleased with our visit.

Takeaway review: My review is only based on one of the meals on offer - but it's so good, I hesitate to try anything else! It's the lamb curry... full of big chunks of meat, no fatty or otherwise inedible bits, and a very tasty thick sauce. There's enough to split into 2 meals if you're not a big eater. It's my favourite, so far - but I have a lot of sampling to do. It makes Sunday evening well-worth looking forward to... I recommend having the delicious garlic and chilli naan bread to mop up the sauce, as an alternative to rice. All-in-all, a great value, tasty meal - you won't be disappointed

Stayed at Premier Inn for the night. Went into town and came across this little gem. Food amazing and service very good. Will definitely go again next time we're in the area

Decided to have a curry so I read the reviews on this restaurant on here.Well worth a visit if your in Honiton.Only downside was the restaurant could benefit from a refresh that’s the reason for only 4 stars.The food which is the only reason we were there was bang on.I would definitely return

I've eaten in this restaurant on countless ocassions and in my opinion, it just gets better. The lamb tikka is the best I've ever tasted and the main courses never disappoint. I've eaten in restaurants all around London and Kent and I have no hesitation in saying, this is by far the best Indian/Nepalese food I've eaten. Please don't change your chef!!! I'll even pay more if he wants a pay rise !

Fantastic flavours, definitely the best local Indian around. I would highly recommend to all party sizes and ages. Never a bad experience.

I absolutely love this restaurant. We were very happy to see it open again. The food is delicious. We have tried many dishes and they are all fantastic. The staff our friendly and very efficient. I would highly recommend a visit.

food took over an hour to arrive, priority to takeaways rather than us sitting in restaurant, heard other tables also querying delays and wrong orders, food very bland and not particularly special in any way

Horrific experience. Order placed and told it would be ready 25min later, fine. Order collected and half the curries missing. Then told it would be another 20min. Returned 25min later to be scalded for being late. Got it home and no rice. The reason "it wasn't put through in the order so chef didn't do any". As if we would order a curry with no rice?!Absolute shambles of incompetence resulting in disgruntled previously loyal customers and a cold curry.On the plus side, hats off to the chef for a banging curry! Very tasty, beautifully spiced and clearly fresh ingredients. Just a real shame that the front of house let the kitchen team down.

Been here before and had some lovely meals but this time it was absolutely stunning. The starter was ample and extremely tasty but the chef's special curry was amazing. Chicken and lamb didn't need a knife to cut ,so succulent. Not at its busiest tonight but I'd book in advance to save disappointment. Will be back very soon

We love this place! The food is well cooked and authentic Nepalese cuisine...not Indian. The staff care about service and get the order right every time. We have visited frequently and never had anything other than the highest quality in both food and service.

I ordered a variety of dishes and I had a taste sensation during every mouthful. I can well recommend the mixed balti that wasn't on the menu but when I asked for it ,it was no trouble to create. And absolutely delicious . Im looking forward to my next meal here

Good to see this place open again for takeaways after lockdown for our curry fix. Pleased to report it was as good as ever.

Came here for some food with a friend after working in the area, looking for a curry the reviews online seemed great. Turning up we were the only people in the place, however we still went in and had a sit down bit of grub. Service was great with the girl being friendly and helpful. Food took no time at all to come and it was extremely tasty, we would love to go back but I feel the place needs to be touched up, it didn't look clean in areas with dirt marks on the wall. Such a shame as the food is great here but they need to get it looking cleaner and fresher!

Lovely food and lots of it. It would have been helpful to have the menu number on each container - we were feeding 10 & couldn’t read the writing on the tubs so had little idea of what was what, (hence 4 rating rather than 5) though it was all delicious!

Popadoms were soft, had lamb passandra , the lamb was not marinated and was so tough it was uneatable. Throughout the meal three young girls who worked there were loudly discussing their salary and tips. When I complained about the meal they remained uninterested

I went in at opening time at 1730 .. the restaurant soon filled. Food excellent and very tasty and well presented. Crisp efficient tone but not that warm a welcome.

We had 2 x chicken biryani with plain curry sauce. 1 x chicken Bhuna, 1 x chicken tikka masala, 1 x boiled rice, 1 x pilau rice, 3 x onion bakers, and peshwari Nann and Keema nan. All dishes were piping hot, fresh and really tasty! We are in Honiton for a weekend break and so glad we had a takeaway from here!

Nice little restaurant. We picked the Gurkha dishes as we had never had them before. They were lovely especially Sherpa chicken dish. The staff were really lovely

Had a lovely meal from here at the end of my hols. The korma was lovely but i wasnt keen on the sauce to go with the poppudoms im afraid. Lovely naan bread aswell, and a discount.

We just had one of our best ever indian take aways from here. We are here on our holiday. My husband loves a hot curry and had the lamb jalfrezi he usually asks for it extra hot, but there was no need. I had the chilli chicken napali, the best curry I have eaten in a long time. The children enjoyed their Korma. We highly recommend this take away.

Great place to eat. Good portion so had “take home “ for the following day. Highly recommended . Staff very helpful and friendly. They knew their menu and helped by describing ingredients. Nothing was too much trouble.

We visited Taste if Gurkhas whilst staying in Honiton. Vibrant setting, the food was fabulous and portions were generous. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, an asset to the restaurant. Reasonably priced, We would be sure to visit again if staying in Honiton.

Good Indian/Nepalese fare and plenty of it at a reasonable price. We ate very well and had enough left to take home for another meal!

I have been coming to this restaurant for years and all I can say is it’s the best Indian food money can buy. 10% discount on takeaways and is great value for money. Definitely recommend!!

I went there with my mate on my Birthday, welcoming staff,good atmosphere and really good service, I ordered chicken Shaslik that was mouthwatering flavour and tasty. My mate ordered chicken tikka masala it was nicely cooked and best flavour we did try in past anywhere so far. Definitely going there and recommending this place.

Have had several Madras curries from here and usually very nice, I think they overdid the heat this time as the sauce was unbearable. Two Madras veterans both agreed this was vindaloo plus territory.

We arrived on time and were shown to our seats. Waitress took our drinks menu and had difficulty with understanding a larger and lime!! We ordered our food and the order was read back to us all correct. When the main courses arrived we were short of one full Maine course and 3 sides missing!! After some confusion and lengthy delay the meal and sides arrived. We all tucked in only to find three of the five meals had undercooked chicken, we notified the waitress who went to the kitchen to see the chef/ cook who never looked at the pink chicken BUT said it was all safe to eat needless to say it was all left on the plate. Have been going to this restaurant over many years but would think twice about returning. Gone down in quality and service.

Had a pretty below par curry the last time we came here, but hoped it was maybe an off-night, so was willing to give it a second chance to redeem itself. Friendly service, but the curry's were all tasteless, bland, poorly presented and tepid. I gave this place a glowing review a year or so ago, but the quality and consistency have disappeared completely.

I love curry and my two favourite curry restuarants are Eastern Eye in Newton Abbot and Simla Spice in Chard. I don’t know what’s up with the take always in Honiton but they’re all rubbish and I’ve just had my second curry from this place and I new it was going to be crap.

As a family we are regulars either to sit down or for a takeaway, and we love the food here. Tonight my boys were treating me to a Mother’s Day meal and this was my choice. At first we were going to have a takeaway but as we got there we decided to eat in instead. I mentioned I had meerkat meals and the waitress said that fine show us at the end. Food was lovely as usual, but the young girl didn’t seem to know what she was doing and fumbled around taking the order! At the end of the meal I showed my voucher and she struggled to work it out, (never been a problem before) The boys paid and as we were about to leave the girl shouted out for everyone to hear “excuse me I don’t mean to offend you but next time can you book or we won’t serve you” I said “I have never had to book before the other staff members have told me I don’t need to, and often use the meerkat voucher.” The older lady then shouted out “yes you have to give 2 hours notice” (I have never seen either of these staff members before) the lady who is pregnant and the other young girl are always very friendly and have never mentioned having to book. I’ve read the terms of the meerkat meals and it doesn’t say you have to book, it states you show them your card when asking for the bill “simples” (clearly not so simples) and as I said before we are regulars and before tonight it’s never been a problem!! This was meant to be a lovely treat from my children and ended up being ruined by being embarrassed by the members of staff!! We choose to travel to honiton because the food is very good, but from now on we will go to Taunton as there’s other Indians that will take the meerkat voucher without having to book and with staff that don’t try to embarrass their customers!!! I was very disappointed with tonight’s experience!!

We always have a takeaway curry while on holiday. This was one of the best, especially the chicken Balti. Unfortunately the lamb was slightly tough. We telephoned the order through and it was ready on arrival. Overall a good experience.

When we arrived into a very small restaurant we had to get past the staff that were congregating around a bar area, to be shown to a corner table next to a dirty radiator with unfinished plaster behind that wasn’t the same colour as the walls.

Freshly prepared spicy food cooked to perfection. We’re not big eaters so the curried fish, daal and peshwari Nan were perfect for our needs. Each dish cooked with care. Very, very good.

Decided to try the restaurant after seeing it on our first visit to Honiton. Glad we did as the curry was very tasty. Also came highly recommended by a passing northerner.

Staying in Honiton this was the only restaurant serving Indian food and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed my meal! Pleasant, not intrusive staff and a vast menu to chose from id happily visit again! It was a Wednesday day, circa 15 covers and plenty of people walking in for takeaway; I guess this place can get busy at the weekends so book to ensure your table!

Had a really enjoyable takeaway. Kids enjoyed it too, and was good value for money. We are vegetarian and that was well catered for.

We booked a table for 19.45 on a Saturday and the restaurant was busy as well as take away.Usual beer and poppadom arrived quickly as well as taking our order.An hour and a half later still no starter.Total meal of poppadom, starter and main took almost 3 hours which is ridiculous. The take away side took precedent over restaurant ,not good. The food was pucker though and very enjoyable. Staff are friendly. I would go back but do a different night or earlier evening.

We recently visited this Indian. We hadn’t booked and were staying locally on our holidays. The food is delicious. All plates empty and we’ll certainly be back! Great service from the young man who served us too. He was very polite and friendly. Highly recommend.

I have just moved to the area and I have been trying out new places in the town so we decided to get a take away. Everyone really enjoyed their food and said that it was much better than when we used to use the Indian restaurants in Seaton.

Used this takeaway at least once a week but food no longer up to scratch and on my last visit both me & my partner we both ill I should have called in the following day but decided just not to use again.

we used to use this restaurant on a regular basis and the food was excellent we noticed 2 years ago that they must have changed their chef as the food in my opinion of someone who has eaten in many Indian restaurants and understands Asian cooking changed. I have read other reviews here and picked up on one that said the sauces seemed the same and not unlike supper market ones, I would agree with this which is such a shame as before I knew we were eating authentic well cooked Indian cuisine. We thought we would return again recently,one to give it another try hoping it may have changed and two to support Honiton as we live here, sadly it was a mistake and we won't be returning.

We enjoyed a very tasty curry here recently, the two girls who served us, one Nepalese, the other English, were polite, friendly and efficient, our Tastecard was accepted without question, giving us a substantial discount on the bill. We’ll certainly visit this establishment again the next time we’re in Honiton.

At last a good Indian in Honiton that delivers on taste and quality. No longer do I have to travel to exeter. A resteraunt that takes the place of lost Viceroy.

Honiton is a traditional west country market town. The Ghurka is a friendly, pleasant restaurant in the high street. Good food, interesting menu, excellent Nepalese beer. A short walk to the Premier Inn where we were staying. Honiton is worth a visit.

We have enjoyed several night's out at this establishment. The food is always great and the service attentive and friendly without being intrusive. Highly recommended:-)

Fabulous food. Staff always friendly & helpful. Not the best interior decor... We prefer the cosier & traditional Indian atmosphere & look. But we've eaten here a number if times, & had numerous take-aways. It's been consistency very good. I highly recommend the traditional Gurkha Chicken, a hot dish cooked with vinegar. Excellent!

Food plentiful and delicious. Staff very welcoming and friendly providing an excellent service. Certainly a good choice on the menu and not ridiculously priced, I recommend this restaurant

Best Indian I have had in the West Country.

Visited with a group of ladies, we were all served quickly by some lovely staff. The front of house team were attentive and quick to offer us crisps and pickles.

We booked a table for 7:00pm and, to be fair, our order was taken fairly promptly. Then it went wrong! While waiting for our meal a takeaway customer was told that someone else had taken his meal in error and that he should return in ten minutes time - no hint of an apology - the customer was clearly embarrassed. Subsequently we were asked (quite rudely) if we'd like to order our meal (twice). I explained that we had already ordered and merely got a dismissive shrug from the waitress. After 30 minutes of witnessing the total lack of customer service this place provided we decided to go elsewhere, had excellent service and superb food. (JK'S Bistro).

We visit this regularly and sadly its going down hill. The staff need some training ,f it were a transport café it would be acceptable to have the cutlery put down in a heap in front of you and to look as if you were a crumpled crisp packet. Sadly the original lady dosent seem to be there ,her presence is missed. Also the food was just not up to its normal standard

We couldn't believe how bad the food was. The starter was warm on the outside but cold in the middle. We were told they half cook the food and then re-heat it, that was the excuse, honestly. The mains were dreadful. The Shaslik, normally served sizzling and piping hot, was hardly warm and limp. There was no evidence that the chicken had seen a clay oven, it was gross, re-heated chicken, shocking. The chilli chicken nepali was also just warm and the meat not at all like cubed chicken breast. The side dishes were re-heated and tired looking, nothing was recognisable as a vegetable and the rice was a weird colour and dry on top. Inedible. We left just paying for our beers and poppadums, they didn't seem at all concerned. If anyone thinks this is indian food please go and try it somewhere else, it will be a revelation.

Our second visit. Very impressed both visits. The food was tasty and served with a nice smile. One of our group was vegan and they provided vegan versions of a couple of dishes gracefully. They also popped into the kitchen twice to verify suitable vegan foods. We look forward to our next visit.

We had takeaway for 5 people on Monday night and the food was excellent, fresh, hot and very tasty. It was ordered for a certain time and it was ready, plus you got a discount for collecting it yourself, all in all fantastic!

It looks like a simple cafe - which it is but the food was excellent. Staff attentive and helpful - very polite. Food was tasty, big portions and good flavours. Nice spot to eat.

First and probably the last time. Called up for a collection at 19:20 to be told at least 50 minutes. Went in to collect at 40 minutes still took over an hour and half. Food was nothing but average. Not a great experience

As a lover of Indian Cuisine I can honestly say this was the worst ever Biryani was mushy and tasteless, the rogan was lacling flavour and lamb! Would recommend the poppadoms!

This is a very busy restaurant. The staff are mostly English but they all bend over backwards to ensure everything is 1st class. It has been refurbished in the last 18 months ,which has improved it. The food is always excellant

We went to the restaurant on Sunday 18th Feb. for a takeaway meal for our family of five. We rang, ordered and were told that it would be 30 minutes. When we arrived after said time, the food was ready for us to take away. All of it was absolutely delicious and portion sizes were generous. Highly recommended.

A new twist on Indian very tasty, food makes up for the basic nature of the restaurant at a very reasonable price. I stayed at the Premier inn 5 mins up the road certainly better then what they have to offer in their restaurant. Had the Nepalese chicken curry, nice and tangy not too hot with the potato side. Worth a visit.

To be honest it's been a while since i've visited and has since had a refurbishment and name change. Having tried most of the other Indian restaurants around the local area, my expectations weren't that great, having had a particularly average curry a few days prior in an Exeter based restaurant.

The Nepalese are famed for their courteous hospitality - this place is no exception. From the moment we walked in the welcome and service were second to none. We ordered momos to start which were delicious and very authentic. We then had the lamb jalfrezi - lovely heat and taste - and the special karahi, an unusual and tasty combination of lamb chicken and shish kebab - yum! Wine very good and very reasonably priced. The friendly waitress explained to us about the pictures on the walls, all of their homeland. Would definitely return.

We had a takeaway, which may be different from a restaurant experience. As being the only curry house in town, you are bound over to order from here. My partner wanted the 'sag paneer', which is described as "fried pieces of cottage cheese". Upon questioning...

So disappointing as the Taste of Gurkhas Honiton has been our favourite Indian for the last couple of years, but...

Can't fault this place. Reasonably priced, great tasting food. Been here on more than one occasion now and will come...

Not been here before but glad we did as food really good, took food home to sister who lives nearby and it was enjoyed by all, food well cooked by apparently Nepalese chef and was as good a curry I have had for quite a while. Restaurant bit small and bright nobody in but it was early, food was not long in coming prices ok would use again

OMG- this small and friendly restaurant is simple off the charts, the staff are very attentive, but not over powering and what can I say about the food, simply amazing. Great value for money

Went to restaurant on Saturday evening with family. There was a party of 20 on a long table that dominated the small restaurant area. It was so noisy it was uncomfortable. They have recently refurbished the restaurant painting the walls a horrible orange colour, with very bright lighting. The cosy ambiance has gone, and with the removal of the carpet, it is very noisy in there. It is a shame as the food & service is wonderful & cannot be faulted. Would only recommend having take away in future.

This small , clean restaurant has been recently decorated with orange colour walls. Their photos on their web page shows approx the number of tables they have. So if you want to visit for a meal either book or arrive as they open which is around 5.30pm. They also provide a take away sevice too.Very polite staff and the meals are great. We will return next time we are in Honiton.

Excellent takeaway! We called in to order our food, it didn't take long, and the staff were friendly and chatty. The food was lovely, I had the Chicken Tikka Bhuna - very tasty and with the perfect level of spice, and my friend had the Gurkha's Chicken which he really enjoyed, it was wolfed down in about 10 minutes! Would definitely go again

We love the Menu, the food, the size portions are exact - just super. We have eaten hear four times in the last two months and every time food and service were fantastic.

Vermoeid en hongerig kwamen bij dit restaurant aan. Hoewel de inrichting wat eenvoudig en heel erg oranje is, is de bediening zeer vriendelijk en het eten bijzonder lekker!! Aanrader dit restaurant.

My wife and I recently stayed in Honiton and one night we fancied an Indian takeaway. After searching online, we decided to go for Taste of Gurkhas. When ringing to order I found them very friendly and accommodating, and exactly the same when I went to pick it up. We just had a chicken korma, a chicken biryani, garlic naan and popadoms and it was SO good. In fact, I would go as far as saying that the biryani was one of the best I have ever had - if not the best. Therefore, I can thoroughly recommend this restaurant for the quality of the food, service and price. Thanks

As Indian restaurants go, this one serves very tasty food. We use it regularly for take aways and the occasional eat in meal. The prices are reasonable and the service is efficient. The place has recently had a make over and is now fresh looking and fairly stylish. The ambience in the place is a little lacking and quite informal however, so it's not a place I would recommend for a romantic meal.

Saw this had some decent reviews and overall we agreed. Some old favourites but some new dishes that made the menu more interesting. Decor a bit orange so would suggest it's toned down a tad. Good value and will return.

Outside is not attractive and neither is the bright orange interior.The finer details are overlooked such as cheap glasses an serviettes.The food however is fairly good and the service was quick and fairly attentive.With some tlc this little restaurant could be really good

The Holt was booked so we tried this restaurant on spec. On reflection I'm glad we did because the food was interesting and the service was efficient and friendly.

Had a nice takeaway from here, was all kind of average. Portions were a good size. Fast and friendly.

Myself and my sister went to have a meal at this restaurant. I was very impressed with how attentive the waiter was and nothing was too much trouble. The portions were a good size and the taste was very good. Everything came on time and we had a very enjoyable evening and we will be going back

This restaurant has recently been refurbished, the food is always very good great flavors(ask for Naan to be well done as its normally soggy) they serve decent portions. The staff are always so polite and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. They were a great find after so many poor currys after leaving London

Thought we would give it a go and certainly were not disappointed with the food, everything was really great.We were somewhat disappointed with the little eating area..at first we thought it was the waiting area for collecting takeaways until we were shown to a table. Had checked out their website and was sure there was a picture of a beamed restaurant. Great shame as we would not wish to eat there again in the 'waiting Room' but the food is really fantastic.

Top notch food from this recommended resturant the tables are a little bland buthe the food excellent a must go there if visiting or if you are lucky to live here. The only problem was parking but that is not their fault

I visited this restaurant for a family birthday meal. The food isn't too expensive and the service was quick. The only downside is how small it is. It would be lovely if it was a bit bigger but apart from that the food was lovely and would definitely return.

It's such a shame to have to write this review as we have eaten here several times either sit down or takeaway and the food has always been excellent the flavours in some of the dishes are amazing! However that said we popped in to order a takeaway last night and was horrified to see the girl serving us emptying the leftover pickles from the tables into the takeaway pickle cartons! Now if they are doing this in the front of house what on earth are they doing behind the scenes??

The food was absolutely delicious and the service was great too! I was recommended the restaurant by a friend who visited the previous day and it was well worth the detour to visit!
