Just one word describes this. Diabolical. I can't understand how this has had good reviews. Food was flavourless and worse of all the rudeness of the manager. Non welcoming, lack of interest with a couldn't care less attitude. Don't go here, unless you like rudeness unflavoured coloured food and a service that lacks any friendliness.

Found a hair in my food and the server laughed, didn’t even say sorry just said they would take it off the bill, when we settled up he tried to say that it doesn’t match anybody in the kitchen and he implied that it was mine, It was a long black hair… I’m a guy with short ginger/dyed blond hair. Make it make sense

I don't usually write reviews but they really deserve 5*. We eat here quite often and the food has always been excellent but sometimes in the past the service may have been lacking a little. But now they seem to have cracked that too. The main courses are always spot on and so too are the starters and side dishes. For example, delicious crisp onion bhajee and soft, well filled peshwari naan, never scorched. Try this restaurant, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

When we arrived at the restaurant we waited ages just to get a drink, and eventually they came and took the food order but we waited for over an hour, there was no apologies for the wait and when we asked for the bill they even over charged on our drinks, the food was ok , but everything else wasn’t, we won’t go there again.

We have been meaning to try this restaurant since visiting Sidmouth several times over the last seven years. The reviews are mixed but a particularly glowing review in February 2003 convinced us. Furthermore 18 years as a family business says a lot. On the the whole top quality ingredients, evidenced by my acid test that I did not high jack the bathroom the following morning. The excellent Chicken Delight is more like Butter Chicken and the Special Pilau Rice was particularly good and unique. Wine exceptional value at £21 for a good viognier. From the house specials, the Tharov Sofyani sauce was delicious but I considered the lamb and tad chewy. Friendly crew.🇬🇧🇳🇿

A pre-theatre dinner for two at this "smart casual" restaurant at the top of the main shopping street in Sidmouth. A pleasant welcome at 17.45, with only one other table occupied as it was so early in the evening. Service was unhurried (but not slow) and the food was delicious and well presented. My wife and I shared a main plus two vegetable dishes and a rice, accompanied by a naan bread, and that was plenty for our appetites. Prices are in line with similar establishments in the area - our bill, including two soft drinks, was £34.

This is a rather average restaurant, and could do with some updating. Across from where we were sat, one of the bench seats was held together with packing tape. Not a good look. The service was good and prompt - but perhaps a bit prompt as the waiter was trying to load our small table with our main course dishes while were just halfway through our poppadoms. The mains were piping hot, but we both felt they lacked the real flavour promised in the menu. It's a decent sized dining room, and on a bank holiday Monday at 7pm about 5 were taken. I doubt you'd need to book a table.

The food was ok, if a little more oily than I’d have liked. But…it was a Saturday evening and there weren’t many people in there, yet the service was slow. There were a couple of ants on the table when we sat down (and ant powder on the floor nearby). My friend ordered a G&T and it came with no lemon, which the waiter fetched for her on request, but after this my friend realised the tonic in it was virtually flat, but didn’t want to say anything else and make a fuss. I would have myself. We only ordered mains and got them an hour after arriving. All in all it wasn’t a great experience and we both agreed we wouldn’t go back.

Monday evening in Sidmouth - most restaurants closed (day off), but the Cinnamon Tree was very much open when we arrived at around 6.30, although still fairly quiet. By the time we left at 8.00, most tables were full and a number of people had arrived to collect takeaways. Pleasant staff, a broad-based menu with indications about heat values, and explanations for those not au fait with Asian cuisine. Service was not rushed, and not slow - just the right amount of time to study the long menu, 15/20 minutes wait for the food to be cooked, not rushed afterwards. The food was well cooked, and plentiful (we both left a little, as were full up) Bill for two mains, one side dish, one cheese naan (which actually tasted of cheese!) and two soft drinks was just over £40. Mix of customers included family groups, couples, work colleagues, and two solo diners. Open every day, and worth a visit. Next door to the cinema at the top of the town shopping area.

Very happy with the food, really enjoyed it. Check your bill though! I asked for an orange juice that was advertised as 200ml but I was given a pint. I pointed this out and they said they would only charge me for the smaller glass. When the bill came. There were two lots of drinks on it, £8.45 which was correct for a glass of wine and an orange juice, but an additional item for £9.45 was also on the bill. They removed this when I drew their attention to it. I didn't leave a tip, which is very unusual for me. Good food, sad about the deceit.

Unwelcoming and rude staff specifically the guy in the blue hoodie working there that snatched bowls off our table and seemed angry with us throughout the meal. Kazi Ahmed started this wonderful Indian restaurant some 18 years ago. A charming gentleman, who is genuinely customer focused. Of course, particularly during these challenging times when there is a chronic shortage of reliable staff in the hospitality sector (the demand for hospitality staff is now so strong, according to the trade body UKHospitality, in February 2022 there were an estimated 394,000 vacancies in pubs, bars and restaurants), it's inevitable service may be a little slow when the restaurant is full. I sincerely hope The Cinammon Tree doesn't suffer experiences I've observed in other establishments, namely people, who deliberately complain about every minor detail, then expect a huge discount or, worse still, walk out without paying at all. Shame on you! And what's the problem with waiting a reasonable time anyway? Surely, it should be an enjoyable evening out. Time to chat and laugh about ourselves and the state of the world, despite the parlous situation affecting so many of us. February can be a quiet month. Catering is an art form. I know from experience trying to predict customer numbers and budgeting for the correct amount of food is far from easy. We had a very pleasant day out in Sidmouth yesterday. It was relatively quiet, but hopefully with the school holidays starting, business everywhere will pick up. Clearly, Kazi Ahmed and his team are consummate professionals. There was a wide range on the menu to suit all palates and a good selection of beverages. The food was delicious and hot. Ample portions. Compliments to the chef! Served with efficient politeness, without being sycophantic. Spotlessly clean everywhere, including the powder-my-nose facilities! No noisy musak that makes it impossible to be heard. We had no difficulty parking. There's a take away and home delivery service too. Excellent value. I recommend The Cinammon Tree most highly and wish the gentleman every success.

My partner & I had the misfortune to visit this Restaurant for the 1st time (and last!!) a week ago - We had not booked but drove to Sidmouth early to find a nice place to have a meal before the film and the cinema was just a few doors down. There was only a couple of people sitting inside and we were given a table near the side of the front desk near window.I will not go into all the details, as it was so ridiculous but it was literally like an episode of 'Fawlty Towers' except it was not funny!! We had come out for a pleasant meal - There were 3 staff members we ever saw - one was an older man clearly the owner and a waiter gave us the table to sit out. We were not greeted with a smile and told to sit at small table for 2 near front desk near window and door. From the start this man (owner) was chastising the lady waitress and after the waiter very loudly and rudely and we could hear what he was saying - it felt awkward and embarrassing!! People started coming in and it gradually got busier - the tables were VERY close we thought, 1 metre or less and there seemed no or little Covid awareness ...the waiter came and we could not really understand what he was saying to us as it did not sound English. Anyway he took our order but I could not get any explanation of a dish as it was virtually impossible to understand his replies. We seemed to be waiting ages just for 2 main dishes (no starters) and it was getting concerning as the film was starting at 7.45 so we had wanted enough time not to rush yet this seemed overly long considering we arrived early and it was quite empty. Suddenly a trolley with food on (not covered with lids) was placed to my side BUT the waiter dashed to the gront desk and started pouring drinks for other clients, and being told off loudly by the owner all the time!! The telephone by now was constantly ringing - and I mean constantly!! it was quite loud and the couple next to us said it was awful and VERY irritating when you are out for a nice meal and conversation. The lady asked the waitress nicely if she could please turn it down - she quite rudely replied saying no she could not as they had orders coming in. All the time these 3 people were running around like headless chickens - the only way to describe the complete disorganisation!! no one seemed to know what the other was doing, forgetting drinks and people waiting for their food. By now with the trolley STILL next to me my partner stood up and said he had had enough of waiting for his food when it was sitting there so got up and served us our meals - I had just put my fork into mine when the waiter arrived out of the blue and said very rudely it was not ours! then literally took it off our table and plonked it on our close neighbour's table!! By then food was luke warm and the couple complained and said the food was cold and could it be heated - they too had been waiting of course as long as us!! Our food eventually turned up 5 minutes later but was fairly bland, my plate seemed to be piled high with rice and a small dish with the meat and sauce ..! My partner's looked like salmon-pink sauce - he said it was ok but was a bit strange! By this time the restaurant was full (there had seemed to be very little open in Sidmouth this evening as we had walked around!) band there were about 8 to 10 people constantly queuing up outside with the door open constantly with people jamming the lobby holding door open ...the phone was ringing loudly constantly and the woman or the waiter were picking it up all the time and writing down ignoring people who were awaiting a table! It was clear they were running a busy take-away on top of an almost full restaurant!! Again we as well as the couple next to us asked them please could they turn off the phone - they were clearly not managing any of it anyway ..the lady rudely chirped back to the couple No she could not! she was not allowed to and if she did they could not do bill payments as it was on the same line!! We all could not believe it!! I visited the ladies' before leaving and when I flushed the water came to the top of the bowl!! just yet another thing!! - there was no sign to say it was not working!!We asked for our bill and were told no they could not do that at the moment as they were too busy - my partner said we need to pay as our film is starting!! He told the Manager it had been an appaling experience all round and the man said Go Go!!! and the waitress rudely said for all to hear we are short-staffed !! We saw the couple next to us in the cinema when getting our seats and they asked for a discount on their bill they said as it was dismal! They had been there once before but said, like us they will never go back again!! We also heard a man who was waiting ages, probably 40 mins for a take away say he had been going there 15 years and would not be returning!! This Restaurant has clearly no idea of customer care, front of house, and need to have a course in it ASAP! Even if they are short-staffed, like many other business do not take it out and insult your customers - and I recommend you either run a Take-Away OR a Restaurant as, as present you are not able to deal with both and was a most unpleasant experience listening to all the rudeness to staff constantly and little regard to their clientele. It lets down Sidmouth and is a sad example to give both locals and people on holiday. This is our true experience and is not exagerrated and you will see other reviews similar to this one.

The older gentleman initially at the desk was pleasant but the younger guy serving us never smiled or spoke. He spent most of the time with his back to us looking out onto the high street window. Originally from Birmingham, the home of the Balti. I was missing spicy food whilst staying in Sidmouth. Driving past the Cinnamon Tree my partner got us a menu. The plan was to get an order for delivery as the restaurant was fully booked. My partner did say the man was abrupt when he was collecting the menu. I called to place the order, whilst taking my order the man was intermittently shouting at staff in Bangladeshi, I should know because I speak the language. I explained I was staying at a local hotel and asked how would I know if the food was delivered, I was told the driver would call me and he took my number. When I asked how long it would be the man sighed and said 45 minutes. He then said madam I am very busy and put the phone down. So not taking the risk and ordering from elsewhere in case this food turned up and giving The Cinnamon Tree the benefit of the doubt I waited 40 minutes and called them. I was then told the driver is on his way and the phone was put down on me. Needless to say the food never was delivered. All I can say, because the competion for dining out and deliveries is limited in Sidmouth, due to the increase in holidaymakers staycationing, The Cinnamon Tree think they are able to treat customers this way. I can't understand why they could not have simply said that they were to busy to fulfill an order. Instead they left us waiting and no food.

One waitor who doesn’t care about whats going on in the room and the other just constantly on the phone not paying any attention to anything took 20+ mins to get attention on drinks we had ordered, following on from this it took a further 20 mins waiting around for someone to take our food order which never happened as he got distracted with something else! Ended up walking out of the resturant STILL unoticed! Very rude wouldn’t even give a star terrible service!

Had a wonderful Indian meal at the Cinnamon Tree Sidmouth. Arrived without booking and they were able to accommodate a group of 7. Service was excellent and food was delicious.

The food itself was slightly above average, and under any other circumstances we felt we may have returned again at a later date, but what we found disappointing was the miserable staff, who made us feel like we were inconveniencing them by ordering a curry. Just even basic customer service, such as a smile or acknowledgement of our order or requests would be nice. Also there were zero covid precautions, tables weren’t set out with social distancing in mind, and when the waiter finished clearing our table he leant right over and blew the candles out on the food heater just inches from our faces.Such a shame, as the meal itself wasn’t bad

We visited with another couple who live locally during a visit to Sidmouth. When we arrived the restaurant was very busy and there was only one waiter serving the whole restaurant. He was monosyllabic when taking orders , plates and cutlery were slammed down and he was exasperated when I asked for a clean plate for my starter as the one I was given was covered in food. The food was dissappointing, inauthentic, and clearly all prepared from the same reasonably ordinary base sauce. The drinks selection was very limited, with lots on the menu unavailable. One of our group was rammed with a serving trolley and when the tea light warmers were blown out we felt droplets of spit from the waiter on our hands, which given we are just out of the other side of the covid pandemic was horrifying!I would advise anyone hankering for a curry in Sidmouth to opt for somewhere/ something else.

We enjoyed a lovely meal here. The restaurant is welcoming and felt safe covid wise. My chicken balti with cauliflower which I'd asked to be added was so tasty and we were all happy with our choices. Highly reommended

Had takeaways from both indians in Sidmouth this week, although the food was ready to collect here quicker than the other one, the quality and taste of the food here and portions sizes were nowhere near as good

Ate here one evening whilst on a break in Sidmouth-booked in advance-food was excellent but they appeared to be short of serving staff-we were advised a staff member had let them down that evening but the service was still very good and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal

Good range of interesting dishes but service from owner and nephew left a lot to be desired! Rude and abrupt came into it but we brushed it off as had been told was best curry house in area. Female waitress was very good and her professional and friendly manner made up for the other two. The nephew went immediately to clear our table as we left but clearly saw no tip and left the table uncleared. Won’t rush back

First the good points - delicious food with a wide variety to choose from on the menu & some unusual dishes too. The not so good stuff - 1: the waiter pressed his hand into our naan bread when serving it and we saw him do the same to the table next to us. Not a great idea in a pandemic! 2: we were over charged by nearly £10 on drinks which we sucked up & paid instead of leaving a tip.

Very poor customer service, arrived early, 5.45pm and only 1 other family there so although the restaurant was almost empty, my husband and I were told to sit right next to the other people, we may as well have been part of them. I did say that we would like another table for some privacy and he said no! We should have just left then as we felt really uncomfortable throughout our meal and couldn’t wait to leave. Needless to say no one else came in and all the other tables remained available, shocking treatment

Had a wonderful meal at this restaurant this evening. The staff were very friendly and polite. During our meal a couple were seated near us to which it became very clear they were not pleased about. There were many tables in the restaurant that were empty at the time, but were booked. The couple did expressed there frustration at the owner and his staff in a unfair way but I would like to say that the staff handled this confrontation in a very professional manner and tried to accommodate everyone in the fairest way possible.

Visited Sidmouth for two weeks in June this year and actually had three meals as the food is so excellent. We just simply love it and so do our friends who often dine with us when they visit their holiday home too.

I was unsure what type of establishment this was on my visit, a restaurant definitely but beyond that I knew very little. All I needed was a little something to tide me over till dinner time. A chicken curry roll hit the spot.
