Spice and Stone in East Devon

Had a really lovely meal here and will definitely return. The restaurant is nice and bright, tables are well laid out and service was good. Food was really tasty and felt really clean, ie not oily, really great restaurant!

We keep popping back, and another great evening, the staff are so welcoming and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Lovely atmosphere, the food is deliciously tasty, and presented really well, a real treat. Thank you and look forward to seeing you again soon.

So we went there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The food was good and the service perfectly adequate. What was a bit odd though was the split nature of the restaurant. It is a takeaway too. And a popular one at that. So just next to our table was a steady stream of people all standing around drinking whilst they waited for their takeaway. So if you do go to eat in make sure that you ask for a table that is hidden away and not close to the entrance or counter.

Ordered chicken pathia last night but as I'm coeliac, I wasn't sure they would be able to cook this gluten free. The lady on the phone was most helpful and said it was absolutely no problem to cook the dish GF. I collected the takeaway, it was ready and waiting, helpful , pleasant staff as always and the food was delicious. Having had takeaways and eaten in here on several occasions previously, it's lovely to know I still can after being fairly newly diagnosed. They never fail in cooking you a tasty freshly prepared meal. Top restaurant.

Had been meaning to visit for a long time and finally managed, early evening on a Saturday. Great menu, wonderful food (a Madras that was flavoursome *and* spicy). Were served very cheerfully and efficiently by Idris (thanks, man) who looked after us well, reordering drinks etc. throughout. Cannot wait to go back soon!

Wow our first time at spice and stone . walking through the door you are greeted by the staff and taken to your table. Food was amazing. The hole place was spotless would definitely recommend. This has to the best Indian restaurant in exeter

Lovely food recommend thus place

Paid a £25 table reservation fee for five people. One person dropped out. At the end of the £100 meal we were charged an additional £5 for the no-show. If we had booked a table for four, there was no reservation fee. We would have been charged nothing if none of us had turned up. How is that right?

Without doubt one of the best meals I've had. The restaurant itself is a family run, welcoming place. The staff could not have been more accommodating. In fact the meal I had was sooooo delicious I asked for the recipe which they happily gave me along with the reassurance to call them if I needed help cooking it. Service and atmosphere very good, the location is tough to find parking but nonetheless the place is a hive of activity and always busy,book in advance. The food is usually interesting and fresh ,I just choose something a bit too hot otherwise very good

When the popadoms and bread are the tastiest bits of the meal, you should be concerned. Really disappointed with tonights offering. All dishes with the same bland tomato based sauce. Had food here previously and was very good. Has really dropped off. Called to tell them and was advised they'd tell the chef.. that was it. Won't be back. A shame.

I wish i had read the reviews sooner. When we walked in we were shooed to a table in the middle of the room despite us calling up and asking for a corner table. I have problems eating in the middle of a room. The young member of staff had an attitude problem. We felt rushed and was asked twice before I even made up my mind if we were ready. Now I dont take long but when someone is rushing you its hard to make up your mind. I felt intimidated. When I made my choice he muttered something in a foreign language that I couldn't understand. The whole experience was distressing and I felt an inconvenience to be there. The food was bland and the curry was watery and hardly any meat never mind the price. This is no way to treat a customer that wanted the night to be a special night with their partner. Definitely won't be going back. Stay clear unless u want to eat in fear.

My partner and I called for a delivery (as it says it does that on the website) the woman on the phone very rudely let us know it was collect only - minus her attitude and shouting consistently she couldn’t hear us over the restaurant noise (we had perfect signal and could hear her shouting and background noise fine, odd place to put a phone for orders), not a problem. Ordered £50 worth of take away for 2, which was not a lot of food, but the reviews and prices made us think it was going to be really nice - wrong. Despite wrong things in the bag, the main “meals” (that you have to make a meal by buying everything separately) were there so we thought we’d just make do, smelt lovely but unfortunately that’s it. The food was watery, as in mainly water than anything else, it all tasted horrible. The website claims “the best butter chicken in Devon” well that is absolutely wrong, it’s the worst butter chicken and the worst Indian take away we have ever had, such a waste of money and time and so very disappointing considering the other reviews. Really don’t recommend, especially if you really like Indian food because this place will ruin that.

I have travelled the world lucky to have eaten in some fabulous places but Spice & Stone never disappoints. The impeccable service with care & attention to the sizzling dishes served to perfection. Tonight was a last minute decision but I’m so very glad my other half insisted on going, it’s been a tough week but I’ve distressed in just a couple of hours. Now feeling full & very satiated. We have not long lived in the area, and have already visited the Spice & Stone 3 times... Each time we sample a different recipe on the menu, and have loved each and everyone. The portions are not too large, the restaurant is immaculately clean. the service is great too from a Family run business. We look forward to becoming firm regulars, especcially when the Autumn and Winter months are more deserving of a lovely warm curry. x

Hmm. We think we must be experiencing better quality Kashmiri food, closer to home. We thought the food was ok, it wasn't bad. We did pass our comments onto the waiter, when we saw a pint of cobra lager cost £7. Not London prices dudes. Thank you.

Fabulous food! We ate here three times during our stay in Broadclyst - twice in the restaurant and once a takeaway. Tried several dishes - also vegetarian - and must say this is one of the best Indian restaurants we’ve ever been to. Good selection, very friendly and knowledgeable staff - and dog friendly! That’s a first for an Indian restaurant for us.

We enjoy a Indian restaurant and have said that Topsham Indian is hard to top but spice and stone have blown everyone we have visited in the south west out of the water for quality and taste.

Got in without table reservation on a Wed night. Polite service, but lacked smiles. Food very tasty and good value for money. We ate and left.

Totally underwhelming... was expecting better after reading reviews. Mushroom curry was bland. Sag Paneer was sloppy n mushy. Veg rice was tasteless. Chips were skinny fries so just nothing special. Menu totally lacked good vegetarian and vegan options. Available to us was side dishes mostly.

Food was very good and reasonably priced. The young waiters were great, not too in your face, didn't hassle for tips which is nice. The only thing I would say is the larger is expensive, £6 something for a beer. I would come back.

We had my step son staying with us on his way to work in a Restaurant in Ozz . We had a take away . The meal was terrible I ordered Tandoori Chops couldn't really eat as was burnt see picture. And the rest of the family couldn't really eat much . Our son said in all the Restaurants he has worked in never seen anything so bad . Will never never go back . And it was very expensive which makes it worse. Doesn't help as only take cash for takeaways wonder what tax man would think

We went here for the first time on Good Friday evening. The service was very good and the food was was excellent. It was served quickly. We will definitely be going again. A superb evening.

We went on a quiet Tuesday evening. Waiting staff were attentive and not over-bearing. Restaurant was clean and airy. A couple of regulars came in whilst we were there. This is often a sign of a good restaurant! The staff were friendly to them. Food was very nice and tasty. As this was my first time here, I didn't want to try anything too spicy. I was happy to discover that the spices and flavours were well balanced. Worth the trip and we'll be going back soon and opting for spicier meals!

Friendly welcome and lovely food

Went here with friends, was seated just inside the door , the restaurant was freezing cold in the area we were sat , even when the door was shut , so much so that we had to keep our coats on most of the time The staff never smiled once , or asked if the food was ok , seemed more concerned with clearing glasses from the table before we had finished our drinks ! Shame because the food was nice , ( except the dessert which was very bland tasting)

One of the best places to eat in Exeter. Ingredients always taste fresh and the Biryani is one of the best I have tried. Great service as well.

The 2 stars are for the food, which was very nice but I’ve had better. This was my 2nd visit, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and didn’t review the first time but sadly it was the same. Staff make you feel unwelcome and rushed, couldn’t even get a smile out of them although I really tried (that was my mission for the night… I failed!) I know the staff are young but surely one of them might be customer focused? 5 of them sitting at the counter on their phones or chatting with a full restaurant is not good. Especially when it’s the owner and manageress they’re chatting to. We had to literally grab them to get a drink. No one asked if our mains were ok, or our deserts. when we were done a young man (the nicest) came over and huffed ‘you ready to pay?’. No thanks or please all night even though I was overly nice. As soon as the 1st person on our table stood up they had the door open, still 4 staff chatting at the bar, no goodbye or thanks. And we were in the main area, maybe people in the restaurant were treated better?!! To be fair I should have known, when booking the table on the phone the guy sounded like he was begrudgingly doing me a favour. We spent over £200 to be treated like they had to put up with us. If you just want a takeaway I’m sure it’s fine. If you want a nice evening out, go elsewhere.

Spice and stone is by far the finest curry I have ever had and nothing comes close to it! The family are lovely and Khan’s specialties are so exceptional with depth of flavour and spice, you can taste it has been made using authentic basting step by step every dish and clearly made with love and wanting to be as delicious as possible time after time. Spice is always using natural chillis which I can never decide on my favourite but Zak is excellent at helping me decide on trying something new. Chicken Karahi is a number one for me but chicken maska which was recommended to try is now making life difficult on what to have. I have not had anything I haven’t liked and look forward to keep trying more and more. We try to go once a month eat in with close friends as relaxing in the restaurant is my all time happy place to be. Never in a rush, never concerned about time just sit down and enjoy the environment and service being waited on whilst catching up with friends. Nothing in or around Exeter comes close this it’s the best curry you will ever eat! I love to go and collect when ever feasible and share a cobra and chat and last collection was to introduce to my friends in the village. Everybody agrees it is stunning! The food is great and is the only reason I would give the place 2 stars. The service is down right rude. The previous owners/managers really made you feel like your custom was welcome. The new owners are completely nonchalant and don’t seem to care. It’s been like this for the last few years. The only reason I kept coming back was because of the quality of the food but after having to repeat every order over and over on the phone, then being told that I would not be able to pick up at a later time just personifies the contempt that customers, including regulars like myself are treated. The place is cash only in case you don’t mind putting your business with people that don’t care. I for one have had enough and won’t be back. I know many friends feel the same…keep service as it is and Spice n Stone will be out of business within a year.

What a lovely family run restaurant. We were in Exeter to send off my son to university. Out of 5 nights of our stay we had dinner 3 nights in Spice and Stone. Truly authentic delicious Indian food with friendly service. Would definitely recommend Indian food lovers to visit.

Poped in twice while over in uk had two very good takaways i must say othertimes before average these time very good recomend sulsulymen range and king prawn saag .tadty popadoms ans boiled rice very nice young lady at the counter very helpful only take cash for takaways but if u no not a problem.

Staying close to Broadclyst we booked a table for our family of 5, including 3 children aged 14, 11 & 9. We had an absolutely delicious meal, the children’s first proper Indian restaurant experience. Service was very friendly & food perfect. We would definitely return when we are in the area, in fact the children think we should plan our journeys to include another visit!

Excellent customer service with great authentic food. Amazing taste, we loved the food. We start with papadom, chicken tikka starter and lamb chop starter it was really amazing. Main was chicken tikka biriyani and nan bread with madras chicken curry. Nothing to complain. Also fast service too. If you ask me I can give u 200/100. Plus 10 🌟 star. Highly recommended. Delicious food - some of the best curry we have tasted! The mixed starters were a bit different to the usual you would get and went down well with the whole family. Friendly service and would highly recommend!

Travelled a fair way to try this place as good reviews and ratings. My all round opinion is that the inside is spacious and pleasant. The service was basically OK. The food I would say was on average OK as the rest of my party enjoyed it a lot but my chicken madras was average at best. Seemed more food colouring and sugar than I am used to and the madras had sweet peppers in it plus the chicken pieces were simply ok. If I had taken my Indian mate here he certainly wouldn't have liked the food. Yet the 3 others with me did. So I guess it's personal taste at end of day. Worth a try though to form your own opinion.

It's difficult to please an Indian dining in a Indian restaurant but these guys pulled out all the stops and provided a brilliant meal and great service. At the end the chef came out to ask us if everything was ok. Would recommend this restaurant...

The headline for Spice and Stone is the food, as you would hope. Authentic cuisine from across the Indian continent that tasted lovely, was well balanced in its spices and was cooked beautifully. Definitely a restaurant to return to.

I’ve dined in twice now and can’t recommend it highly enough. The service and food is brilliant. We mentioned one of the dishes was too hot and was brought a second dish free of charge without asking for it. We will be back!

Holidaying in Broadclyst, we would have booked a table but we'd had a busy day out walking so wanted to put our feet up with a takeaway. The food was delicious and plentiful, restaurant quality above the normal takeaway standard. Hope to visit again.

Got takeaway on Friday evening. Not been before and heard good things. But was very disappointed. Naan was undercooked and very leaden. Curries a bit better but nothing amazing. tandoori chops were not actually chops. Might have been an off night in the kitchen.

Overpriced and mediocre We were staying in Tiverton for a week and decided to get a curry - we looked at reviews online and this place had 4.5 stars. We drove 35 min to this takeaway so over an hour round trip Ordered 1 starter...
