Popped in here on a quiet afternoon in January 2025 for food and a drink. The barman was excellent and we ordered from one of their many menus. The thing that caught my eye was the poutine. We had recently returned from a trip around North America and had poutine in lots of places across Canada including from its heartland in Quebec. I said at the time that many of these were good especially in Quebec City, but we could do better poutine (culturally insensitive?). Generally the gravy was no better than watery chip shop gravy & could be miles better (fact) and our chips are better than their fries (opinion). This old pub just east of Newcastle gas been done up in funky deco, which matched the range in clientele, sold a slow-cooked brisket topped poutine and was wonderful. It was, rudely to Canada, better than any Poutine I'd had in Canada. High praise, but I still think it could be better. In Canada they use cheese curds and here they were mozzarella cubes and I think curds make it better (I imagine many may not enjoy the teeth-cheese squeek but I do. There is generally also much more cheese in Canadian poutine than Ouseburn poutine so I think that could make it better. The chips were great and the meaty gravy was really tasty. Beer was also pretty good too. Would definitely go back again.

I’ve been coming here for a million years, but doubt I’ll be back due to a recent visit. We were going to a gig near here and popped in for a drink, it was Sunday. A rude and disrespectful waiter came from behind us and shouted at us to get out the way so he could seat someone, sighing as he waddled past. Really rude and shows how his schooling landed him in this top end job. RIP tanners.

sunday dinner from here was absolutely beautiful and definitely the best one i've had in newcastle. reasonably priced as well, for the amount of food you get and how lovely it all is. had to take a point off because we found both the barman and waitress to be quite rude/blunt. we weren't welcomed in with a smile, just were stood awkwardly waiting for him to serve us a drink while we waited for our table to be set. when we were paying, we tried to tell him how nice our food was and he stuck his fingers in his ears as if he didn't want to hear it? a bit strange. the waiter who took our order however was really friendly and down to earth. because of how good the sunday dinner is i would definitely come back, but (most of) the staff could be a bit friendlier.

Waited ages to get served on the right hand side of the bat, not one staff member told us that there was no service there on that day and they had a sign almost hidden behind a post saying this. We moved the sign to a more central position and got served on the left of the bar then one member of staff moved the sign back out of view for some reason so more people just waited there to not get served. After eventually getting served two pints for £14 this was quite pricey especially when other nicer pubs in ouseburn were around the £11 mark.

The Tanners Arms: A Chilled Oasis in Ouseburn The Tanners Arms is a Newcastle pub that offers a bit of everything. Whether you're looking for a relaxed drink with friends, a delicious meal, or a night of live music and DJs, the Tanners Arms has you covered. Highlights: Vibe: The pub has a welcoming and laid-back atmosphere. It's known for its friendly staff and "underground" feel, with reggae and dub often playing in the background. Food: They offer a creative menu that goes beyond typical pub fare. They have a revamped burger menu, street food options, and even a Sunday roast. There are also vegetarian and vegan options available. Drinks: The Tanners Arms has a wide selection of beers on tap, including local favorites and classic brands. They also offer a good selection of wines and spirits. Entertainment: The pub has a pool table, a roof terrace, and regular DJ nights on Fridays and Saturdays. They also host pub quizzes and other events. Things to Consider: Location: The Tanners Arms is located in the Ouseburn Valley, a bit outside the city center. However, it's still easily accessible by public transport (Manors Metro Station is 10 minutes away) and offers a more relaxed vibe than the hustle and bustle of the city center pubs. Overall: The Tanners Arms is a great choice for anyone looking for a pub with a bit of character. With its friendly atmosphere, delicious food, and wide selection of drinks, it's a great place to relax and unwind. If you're looking for a lively night out, the DJs and events make it a fun option as well.

Service was appalling! When ordering, the member of staff who served me was incredibly rude. I approached the bar asking about the selection of larger, this already seemed to ruffle some feathers. When my portion of chips arrived, he hurriedly placed down my food, I said thank you and was met with silence, he then threw down the set of cutlery and commented snarkly as I picked up the salt shaker, "there's already salt on them mate". They were barely salted. I don't know if he was simply having a bad day or if he made a premature judgement because I am a student? Was intending to stay for a few... left before finishing my chips. Felt uncomfortable the whole time I was there so I cant even rationally comment on how the food was. Not a fan.

Staff talked us through our menu choices. We had a Radgie Chicken Burger minus the siriacha but they did put a pot of this on the side to be tried and a Radgie Cheese Burger with a shared side of fries and a couple of soft drinks. (Radgie refers to the spiciness) Great menu with a selection to suit all. The food was phenomenonal. Great bar environment. Close to the Ouseburn. Very nice food, not too expensive. 4 of us enjoyed it. My only complaint is the bigger table next to us had kids and they were all on their phones and tablets, each with volume high all playing different things. Not a fault of the restaurant but some people just need to be more considerate when dining with others.
