I think previous reviews haven’t made the distinction between the Tanhouse Cafe near Newdigate and their other branch, the Tanhouse tea bar at Leith Hill Tower on top on Leith Hill. They are associated but not same place being five miles apart.

I think I encountered the same person as Denise. Unnecessarily rude and clearly just angry. The only stain on what is a beautiful place and a quaint little cafe. God knows why you choose to work with the public. I’m sure your employers know exactly who I mean.

Hi I work long hours as a nurse decided to have a walk with a friend for some down time. Had a lovely walk decided to stop have a coffee no one on the entrance I called politely anyone there. A few minutes later a very irate lady appeared and said sharply ‘I was on the toilet’ fair enough we all need the toilet but it was her tone and if looks could kill. Then went onto stack bottles on the shelf as if to make a point. We can all make a point mine is don’t be so rude next time you know who you are you don’t know me I wouldn’t be rude like you in my job. Be thankful you’ve got a job! Won’t be visiting again to be spoken to like that! Just put a small notice ‘back soon’ it’s as simple as that!

A joy to see folks walking around with proper mugs of hot drinks instead of non recyclable cups. A very varied selection of hot and cold drinks and lovely pasties and sausage rolls. Good choice of cakes - sticky flapjack very filling and delicious! All served quickly and by pleasant staff. Plenty of seats around the tower and area below. Magnificent views from the top of the tower - but be careful as the narrow spiral staircase is quite dark in places - especially if you have photochromic lenses in your glasses! As others have noted there are no toilets here so be prepared.

The Tanhouse kiosk at Leith Hill is always a great place to stop for a cuppa and a piece of cake. After a brisk 4 mile wander around the Heathland walk a proper cup of tea in a mug with a lovely piece of cake is just what you need. The setting at the bottom of tower is amazing and the tea and cake is just as good. The Sausage rolls are pretty awesome too.

The kiosk at the foot of the tower is a welcome sight after a long walk. They have a good selection of drinks and snacks. If you go up the tower you can read about the history of the tea kiosk (it's been there a long time, although I don't remember quite how long).

This is just a little kiosk embedded in the bottom of Leith Hill Tower. As well as basic refreshments it also sells tickets for the ascent of the tower (National Trust members free of course). The choice of drinks was interesting and the staff very friendly. It is better than might be expected for an out of the way location.

Worth the walk from the car park, about 1-2kms through beautiful forests. Can see London to the north and the South Downs the other way. Leith Hill is the closest you get to a "mountain" in this area of the UK. The folly was built to try and get over the 1000 feet definition of a "mountain", but the builder didn't realise that man made structures don't count towards altitude.... never mind, it's a local icon.

To get to the tower and the kiosk you have to walk up Leith Hill which is lovely. Once you get to the tower it’s free to climb to the top of your a National Trust member or £2 if your not. The view from the top was worth it! The kiosk had friendly staff, well organised. Had a limited selection however there would be something for everyone. The only real problem and it’s quite a big one which is there are no toilet facilities. After you have undertook a significant walk to the Tower and have had some food and drink at the kiosk your probably going to need the toilet but none are around - very surprising!! Apart from that I had a good time!!

Friendly service from the cafe staff and good cake, with tea in proper mug. Great views, can be crowded and chatty with walkers and cyclists right by the tower, but lower down there are several picnic tables and seats where it is quieter. Worth the walk up the hill from Coldharbour (tiny village with nice pub).

The walk to the tower is lovely as submerged in nature. Many walking trails to choose from. The tower itself isn't much but stands as an important part of the local history. We'll maintained and friendly service at the canteen, we old recommend to add this place on your list of things to do.

With the push to be less reliant on plastic and be eco-friendly it is highly refreshing (in more ways than one) to see the little kiosk café in the Leith Hill Tower offering delicious beverages in proper mugs. There's nothing better than looking down over Surrey and Sussex with a proper cuppa in your palm. And I'm sure it's far more eco to dishwash than use throw-away cups, even if they are allegedly recyclable.

The walk from Landslip car park is about a quarter of a mile, according to the signs. It's quite steep through ancient woods and the walk itself would be lovely enough, but when you get to the top the views are wonderful. The Tower is a lovely old building. A £2 donation for upkeep allows you to the top where the views are even better.

Lovely walk through woodland to the top and enjoyed the 360 degree views from Leith Hill Tower, but found the two way steps on the stone spiral staircase very dark and a possible safety risk.

Now is the time of year to visit this café. Leith Hill is at its best as autumn approaches. There was a short queue at the café which gave us time to select our drinks. We had a latte and green tea and got plenty of change from a £5.00 note. As per the title the drinks come in a nice clean white china mug and were plenty hot enough. What more do you need after a walk on the hills? If you are hungry then there are food options but we did not try them.

Having walked on Leith Hill for some 30 years I can honestly say this current cafe owner really is the best yet. The sandwiches are made fresh to order with extremely good bread, the soft drinks are from a very good supplier and if you want coffee it comes in a proper china cup, none of this nasty plastic or cardboard rubbish. All the cakes are homemade and it's truly good stuff. To make things even better it seems to be open a lot more than in the old days

After a short but steep hike, you will get to the top of Leith hill. The tower closes at 5:00 so if you want to go up, be there before then. The views are nice if it is a clear day. I would only suggest this if you have a lot of time in England. If not, there are so many other things to do that are more spectacular. What you see in the picture is what you get, along with a view on a clear day.

We walked up from Dorking, via Coldharbour, and were delighted to find this little cafe still open ten minutes after the advertised closing time. We had a great mug of tea and a big slab of cake each. In terms of the latter, I can only vouch for my own (the other disappeared too quickly for me to sample it!), but it really was an excellent piece of lemon drizzle cake, moist and lemony all the way through. There was something lovely - and very satisfying - about enjoying this feast outdoors, with fantastic views in every direction.

Often mountain biking past the tower, it was pleasurable to actually go up the tower after joining the National Trust. Plenty of historical information as you travel up the tower and facts stif view at the top on a clear day. Perhaps not worth using the cafe - ice cream is ice in a tub, and hot drinks on the expensive side.

This lovely location is well signposted with three different and fairly easy walks. NB. probably not good for wheels chairs or buggies due to the steep inclines and rocky ground. The flora is beautiful at this time of year and with patience you can see plenty of wildlife especially birds. The Leith Hill Tower is in good condition and at its top, two telescopes give you excellent views across a panoramic 360 degrees. Typically understated, this is a very pleasant walk. The little cafe at the base of the tower sells hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and the staff are very friendly. Benches around the base of the tower are all you've got but provided its not raining are perfectly adequate. The tower has an interesting history going right back to the 1700's. Nice afternoon stroll.

What a fabulous spot! Reward yourself after a lovely ramble up this beautiful hillside with a nice hot drink and cake from the kiosk. Then scale the spiral steps to the top of this wonderful tower and gaze across the countryside. Great historical monument. Walked up to the Leith Hill Tower and stopped off at the serving hatch for a sausage roll, shortcake, coffee, tea and coke. The food is delicious just like at the main Tanhouse in Newdigate. There is no indoor seating at the tower, but there are plenty of benches nearby. Lovely to have a cuppa and a bite to eat in the fresh air. Well worth a visit. Beautiful scenery too.

The People the Grange support will serve you at your table gaining experience of dealing with customers and handling money. This is an excellent and weel worth suppoting. The tea is served in the Victoriam conservatory. The cost is £6.50 a head for a scone, jam and cream with unlimited tea of coffee. Most enjoyable. The only minor downside is the start time of 2 o'close which for us is far too early 3 o;clock for tea would suit us much better and this is the only point thatwill stop us returning

The food was nice (once it came out), but the service was really slow. We had to wait more than an hour for a roast and fish and chips, and it wasn't that busy (about 4 other tables).

The worst experience having breakfast. Ordered a tea and came in takeaway cup sitting in.. with milk and teabag in together. Worst scrambled age I’ve ever seen they were like milk and upon asking the waitress why she replied the chef likes to use undercook them!! The salmon was covered in fat also which hadn’t been cut off when prepared! Awful experience would not recommend as had two bad experiences in this cafe with food.

I took my elderly mum out for lunch and when I asked for a diet coke, I was told that they didn't sell that and all cold drinks were in the cabinet. I asked if they had any other sugar free cold drink. I was told I'd have to look at the cans, or I could have water or a hot drink. I decided therefore to go without. The food = mum ordered the beef and ale pasty. It was so dried up and hard that she could barely cut it with a knife let alone her teeth! I did complain to the waitress who promised to feed back and waited a good 10 minutes or so as I thought someone might show some interest and come over. They didn't! I appreciate that things can go wrong in any business but it's how those things are dealt with that seperates the good from the average. With so many choices locally, can't say I'll be rushing back.
