Just had a lovely tasty meal here. I had Teriyaki Salmon & my husband Katsu Curry. The small plate prawn starter we ordered came with the mains but that really wasn’t a problem and they apologised. Eashed down with a nice bottle of Merlot (although it didn’t need to be chilled) It’s a relaxed and cafe style dining but reasonably priced and the ladies serving us were friendly and welcoming. Slightly off the main tourist area but well worth a visit.

You can tell their food is cooking with heart! I love the ramen especially the egg! So lucky to try their new dessert Miso caramel apple pie! It's HOMEMADE and DELICIOUS!!

I really enjoyed my experiences with Tamago. The staff have always been kind and helpful and the food is delicious. I would love to see more gluten free Vegan options though so I could experience more, but the quality has always been brilliant! A must try! I especially recommend the gyoza!

Miso ramen: a thick miso hot soup is exactly what authentic ramen looks like Gyoza: homemade and beautiful looking Tofu: tofu is deep fried elegantly, you can even taste the homemade pickle ginger. 5 stars for lovely environment and delicious authentic Japanese ramen.

Tamagotchi offers a decent dining experience with a variety of dishes. While their Ramen and Udon are satisfactory, I found the fusion of flavors a bit overwhelming at times. The staff are friendly and the service is prompt, creating a pleasant atmosphere for dining. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, making it a comfortable place to enjoy a meal. Overall, Tamago provides an acceptable dining option with a diverse menu. For those who enjoy fusion cuisine, this may be an ideal spot to explore different flavors. However, if you prefer more traditional dishes, you may find the fusion elements to be a bit too much. I would rate Bakers + Baristas 4 stars for their variety of offerings and friendly service.

Pleasant welcome in a small Japanese restaurant. The homemade sake as an aperitif is worth the detour. We ate a spicy tonkotsu ramen and vegan udon. A real treat. The broth was exquisite! We highly recommend this address after a stroll in the historic center.

Simply the best Japanese meal I've ever had and by far the best in Canterbury. To start we had Takoyaki and Miso Soup, now I do not enjoy tofu but this completely changed my opinion on the humble bean curd, full of flavour. for my main I got a sweet and sour chicken bento, my lord what a feast, each bite more delicious than the last, fantastic. to pair this I had a completely gorgeous plum wine. It was a fabulous meal and the manager/owner was the loveliest person ever! definitely coming back!

Good food but you should know that they don't give you any sauce if you order takeaway, and without warning you. Even though I asked for a little bit of sauce to be put directly on my gyoza the next time, since they don't want to put any on the side, the manager refused without any effort of kindness. So we have to buy our own japanese sauces to season the dishes we order from you? That's a shame.

Had ebo tempura, which tasted and litelooked like it was bought frozen from an Asian supermarket. The ramen was good, but only had one slice of pork - was very stingy with the veggies, too. The cucumber yuzu salad was underdressed, but the flavour was there. The atmosphere was okay, so so. The staff, though, were friendly and smiling. I wouldn't expect it from this price point, but heyho.

Very nice Japanese restaurant that offers big portions. It is quite small so you'd have to queue if you're coming in without a reservation.

The taste of food is exactly what I had in Japan, or nearby countries such as Taiwan. Tempura is authentic, the udon and the soup I had served me well. However, I suppose the dining environment could be better. For example, we sat close to the door, which sometimes not quite relaxing. The door is also too narrow to pass. The rest are good to us though.

We loved our meal here. Good value and fantastic Japanese food. We had a selection of ligh bites to share and the udon noodles. All was very good. Cafe style dining and dogs allowed

The food in this place is authentic and really good –Especially the chicken karaage. The place is cosy, clean, and pleasant. I will definitely recommend this restaurant for anybody who is looking for a Japanese restaurant in Canterbury.

Honestly, this was really lovely. The food was yum and big portions! It was cheap too compared to other places in Canterbury. The atmosphere is slightly lacking, could have been better mood lighting and the decor is nice but basic, however, the staff were attentive and the plum wine was so delicious. It's not a fine dining establishment but it is great for a more relaxed place to eat. Probably perfect for a lunch venue. Definitely recommend if you love Asian cuisine!

My Mrs had sweet sour chicken with rice 10/10, I had a bowl of chicken ramen with a side of a little kastu curry was 10/10 great service smiley staff. Food was very tasty

Gone here before a movie at riverside Curzon. Not too many tables inside and could do with some dressing up. The food was good but not exceptional, I think there may be better Japanese spots in Canterbury.

I tried the fried chicken benton and it is delicious and very close to what we ate in Japan. The Ramen is good too and it will be perfect if can give us one more piece of chosiu.

Best experience after we came back from Japan. This restaurant is traditional Japanese cooking food. I have read the bad review and I think they have never had a real Japanese meal before. The host is a Japanese woman and Japanese chef. The owner is honest and gentle person. Her rice was well perfectly cooked !!! We really recommend this restaurant if you want a real Japanese food and no need to pay for the plane ticket to Japan. Our family is very happy and especially our little one, she even said Oishi !!! We will definitely come back again!

At first look the shop seemed rather small and unspectacular- turned out the interior though small was cute and the food was seriously flavourful and delicious! Prices reasonable enough.

This place was great! Good vegetarian options. We had the veggie shoyu ramen, terriyaki tofu bento and some yuzu honey teas for dinner, super yummy. Staff members were very friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable as well. Highly recommend!

Top notch veggie food and top notch service also! Ramen was super moreish and on Tuesday they have some interesting looking bubble tea & crepes night!

Order from the table on your phone, pay on order completion and a great selection of Japanese favourites, what more can you ask for. Staff are super friendly and approachable. After having spent a chunk of time in Japan it's nice to have somewhere close to home that gives that home from home feeling. Really enjoy it here

We had an early supper here before going to see an opera at the Marlowe. It’s a friendly, informal and unpretentious. Service was slow, but they were very busy, when we mentioned we needed to get to theatre in time and they gave us a discount on the wine, which was unexpected and appreciated. Food was good especially the non meat gyozo, which were on the website but not on the menu, apparently because they are to be discontinued. I was very pleased they had some… please, please keep them on the menu! Great to have tasty affordable Japanese food! Thank you Tamago

Mind blowing flavours, really well executed. If you’re looking for authentic Japanese food, that’s the place to go too. Staff provides excellent customer service. Very minimalistic interiors, so not for night when you are looking for a place with character and lots of atmosphere. We will definitely be back.

Not as good as when we last visited a few years ago. Don't get me wrong, the food was alright. But it was way more expensive than before, the menu was set out differently, making the food less customisable, and the portions were pretty disappointing. My husband ordered a ramen, and the broth was so-so with only one thin piece of pork in it. I ordered an apple mocktail and I think it was just apple juice with some pink food dye. Really disappointing and expensive. We usually stay for dessert but decided not to on this occasion. It's just not what it used to be.

Decided to try Tamago for our late Valentine’s meal. Very plain and simple environment, unfortunately our table was by the door to the toilets which was always open. Overall feeling was like a noodle bar type of place and expected quick service and delivery of food, but unfortunately we had to wait rather too long both for our drinks and our main course. The food when it came was either good or ok depending on the dishes, but I would have to be honest and say I would probably rather go to Wagamama given the choice in future.

Was expecting a traditional Japanese meal, however we were to be disappointed 😔. Lovely front of house Welcome and very accommodating but it was not as reviews lead us to think… someone had put in a previous review as good as Nobu, not a chance was it , we made an excuse to leave after the small plates. We should have known when we walked in at 8 pm and the restaurant was empty. Only pork ramen, laminated menus very basic choices. You expect it to outdo Wagamama but no chance. Sorry guys it was disappointing.

Lovely little Japanese restaurant tucked away on Northgate which focuses on Japanese street food and Bento Boxes rather than sushi. The menu is split into Small Plates and then curries and Bento Boxes. The choices for vegans / vegetarians was fantastic For starters we shared tempura prawns, vegan kimchi spring rolls and some vegan gyoza, all of which were fantastic. I followed this with pumpkin katsu curry while the OH had teriyaki tofu bento box. The depth of flavour in the katsu sauce was fantastic and the tofu was as equally tasty. A good selection of Japanese beers was available to wash it all down with. My only complaint was that the restaurant was on the cold side and there did not seem to be much heating. Overall though would 100% recommend

Great choice! Staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. We sat by the window and they didn’t have heating so brought over a portable heater to keep us warm. I had the kimchi udon and am not great with spice - waiter brought us over water without even asking as he could see I was struggling! Great food, great staff and great value for money, we’ll definitely be back!

Probably one of the best Japanese restaurants we have eaten in. The food was extremely well presented and tasted so good! The staff are friendly and extremely knowledgeable. It was also great to be able to engage in some pleasant conversation with them. Would highly recommend.

We were going to have ramen at Cheeky Ramen but it was too busy (looked good, though). We ended up here instead and it was much quieter and we got a seat immediately. The food was good and the service friendly -- all in all very happy with our impromptu Plan B.

Tonight was my first experience of Japanese food (apart from traditional chains) so I can't speak for the authenticity of the food but, what I can say, is that I enjoyed every mouthful in this lovely little restaurant. We shared some small plates and ordered a curry main and a ramen and was very impressed with the layering and variety of flavours. It's not just about the food either, the friendly unobtrusive staff and fantastic music just made for a great evening all round. Thank you.

Really good service, very tasty food. Ramen was a highlight. Decor is straightforward but functional. Tables need stripping as varnish has become tacky due to surface sanitiser...a common problem. Good veggie and vegan options. I'll definitely go again and would recommend it to anyone, especially ramen fans.

Really tasty food! We had karaage chicken, ramen and a bento box - all recommended. They also have a nice outdoor courtyard which is perfect to sit in on a sunny day.

By far my favourite place to eat out with friends. Treated my out of country friends to this place and they loved it. If you want real Japanese food, then this is the only place to go! UPDATED REVIEW I have easily been here more than 10+ times, and it still one of my most favourite places to go. The service is exceptional with the staff being incredibly friendly and the food comes out very quickly. Everything is well reasonably priced for what you get and it is an absolute delight to devour. If you ever get the chance to visit even once, I recommend it highly!

If you like Asian food this is worth visiting. I like an unpretentious restaurant where the food is great and reasonably priced plus the green tea is fantastic.

Some work to be done on the depths of flavour of the ramen, either use 3 reduction method of the stock, or use tare as a base. But definitely a brilliant addition to the Canterbury food scene. The star of the show was surprisingly the Pumpkin croquettes, full of flavour and spice, what a revelation! Karaage impeccable as always. Definitely worth a visit!

Cute little place, the food is delicious, KimCheese spring rolls are inventive. The selection is small but packed with quality. Can get booked up as not many seats so try and book earlier if possible.

Delicious food in a cozy atmosphere. Staff is very nice. The piri piri chicken had a nice burn to it. Noise level: low. Autism friendly.

Top marks for the ramen. Squid and gyoza also bomb. Finish off with some hot sake and you’re dancing home. Ate here several times while we were in town. Chap out front super welcoming and chill vibes. Nourishing and filling meal. Just what the doctor ordered.

Nice and cozy small spot, with great food. Had the karaagedon which was pretty tasty, and some bubble tea. Staff is very friendly and prices are good. Will definitely come back for more another time :)
