This little ice cream parlour and cafe is one of Yorkshire's little gems the quality of produce is second to none and the staff are always extremely friendly no matter how busy the parlour gets. I hope it never changes, I have been welcomed with my children and grandchildren for more years than I can count and may it continue.

We popped in this shop while being on a day out with some residents from our care home. One of our ladies was on a wheelchair. I supported her to sit at the table with the others and moved wheelchair in the corner. Then I asked one of the owners is it ok to leave it there (the cafe was empty that moment). What a nice answer I’ve got: “Actually we don’t have space for it!” With the grumpiest face I’ve ever seen. I asked should I leave the wheelchair just outside on the street while ladies are eating. After this I was kindly allowed to leave it at least till the other visitors come. Never again with this attitude for vulnerable people!!!

Didn’t like the fact the man serving was handling cash and then ice cream cones/flakes. Hygiene should be a priority! Last time we visited there were two friendly ladies serving one wearing plastic gloves to handle the cones etc. The other to take payment.

Remember this ice cream in my childhood.... so back in the area thought I would visit for a bit of nostalgia! One of the hottest days of the year, but happily queued for 20mins as the queue was a good sign. How wrong could I be! The older man behind the counter (yes only one person serving) was beyond grumpy, no interaction, handed over ice creams and took the card payment.... I made some small talk but got no reaction. How can this be a 21st century business, the ice cream is ok (no advancement into extra flavours), but certainly not worth queuing for. Served from a run down environment with a staff member/owner who clearly doesn't like customers. I like to support local business especially now, post lockdown but this great part of the country deserves better. Never again! Advice spend your money elsewhere.

Lots of reviewers rightly commend Suggitt’s for the ice cream, but it is also a top class sweet shop. Rather than some modern sweet shops who have jars of traditional sweets all from some generic, generally unheard of company, Suggitt’s stock sweets from all the famous, original manufacturers. As a Scot I am perhaps biased in my view that Buchanan’s is the best sweetie maker in the U.K. and to be able to stock up on their fantastic Buttermints (simply the best) and some Blackcurrant and Liquorice is always a real treat. And we had an ice cream! As ever, lovely service from a lady who knows and appreciates good sweeties.

After literally just leaving your shop without an ice cream for my little boy! I thought I’d leave you a quick review to say how rude the elderly blonde lady is behind your desk. We followed all covid rules. Queued while she chatted to the lady in front of me for a while. When. My child said “oh I don’t know if I want sweets or ice cream, her reply was “well hurry up we have a queue outside. If just been in that queue myself, we’d been in your establishamebt second. What a rude nasty lady! I replied well I think we’ll leave the ice creams for today, her reply! Suit yourself! Always like a run out to here! Won’t again! How to ruin a great establishment

When we were picnicing by the river a local told us of an excellent ice cream shop. As an aficionado I had to look it up. Imagine my disappointment to find a (very good) sweet shop selling one flavour of ice cream. The texture was a little watery and thin. Certainly no Spurelli, Wheelbirks or other proper ice cream or gelato specialist.

We have been coming to Great Ayton for an afternoon out as a family since I was a child (25/30 years ago!) Tradition always was to feed the ducks and then have a Suggitt's ice-cream. Suggitt's has always been popular but now the queues are just outrageous! Even mid-week on a not particular pleasant day the queues are out of the door and several person deep outside. Thus the review has lost 1 star, but only because forced to queue for some time out in the cold! lol As well as selling their world famous icecreams, there are also a huge range of traditional sweets and other goodies to buy.

A friend had told me she loves it here and suggested I try it. I popped over on a day off work and I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about. The cafe which I guess some would call vintage or retro just looks in need of a good scrub and modernisation to me. No access for wheelchair users or anyone with a pram and nobody over a size 16 would fit in the tiny booths. The sweet shop next door where they also sell ice cream isn't impressive either. Sells lots of old fashioned sweets which seem to be the in thing everywhere now. Got my ice cream and asked if they had any sauces or nuts etc to which the girl replied "we only do Flakes". Ice cream was cheap enough but only your bog standard vanilla ice cream. Nothing spectacular about it at all. I think the village the shop is based in and the general appearance of the shop gives people a taste of their youth maybe. Hence all the raving reviews. I however was not impressed and will be sticking to Pacittos when I want ice cream.

As most reviews will state - this is a good, old-fashioned sweet shop with a very good selection of old favourites (and any shop stocking Buchanan's Butter Mints is fine in my book). And to repeat that old review cliche - it's a real step back in time. The attached cafe is also a step back in time but is an example of when that isn't necessarily a good thing. The old Formica tables and narrow, plastic bench seating could be fine in a retro way - but retro chic doesn't work when the decor is simply the result of not being bothered to spruce the place up for the past 30 years.I will readily admit however that I have been in lots of old fashioned and tired cafes that I have rated highly because the food and/or service was good. That isn't the case here and how a previous reviewer could have waxed lyrical about "home made delicacies" is beyond me. Apparently you can get a sandwich or a scone, but other than that the food seemed to comprise of a motley selection of commercially produced buns and chocolate, so if you are looking for a decent bit of lunch this isn't the place to come.We only had drinks and here is the good news. A mug of decent tea for 90 pence is the sort of old fashioned stuff I can accept!

Nice icecream but I agree with a previous review about terrible food handling practices. Each time I've bought an icecream from there I've not seen anyone wash their hands after handling money or doing other jobs. The last time I bought an icecream it started dripping as the woman was handing it to me, she wiped it away with her finger and then licked her finger. Visited Suggitt's for an ice cream on our visit to Great Ayton in North Yorkshire. This ice cream has the reputation as being one of the best in Yorkshire but I was not impressed by the product and the service in particular. After taking payment for our order the girl serving picked up the ice cream cones directly with her hands then put the chocolate flake in the ice cream by direct contact with her hands. This just isnt acceptable. Food should not be handled directly after handling bacteria loaded coins and notes. The ice cream had good texture and had good flavor with a hint of vanilla. What I didn't like and didn't expect was the unpleasant after taste. The interior of the shop is tired and many of the sweets are available for sale uncovered. The glass display cabinet used for the sweets was broken and a piece of glass had broken off to leave a very sharp edge. This is an accident waiting to happen. The owners really do need to improve their food safety practices urgently.

At busy times you have to join the queue to buy an Ice Cream or sweets and the small café can be full with locals, walkers or bikers. We love the chatter in the café, the banter can cause some smiles. We will be visiting again soon and hopefully we can buy our Ices on May 1st whist waiting to see the "Tour de Yorkshire."

Suggitts is well known and popular ice cream shop, but I was very underwhelmed by my experience. They only offer vanilla flavour ice cream. When I enquired as to whether the ice cream was gluten free and vegetarian the lady was unfriendly and unhelpful pointing to a worn ingredients list hidden under a display. The ice cream was nothing special and fairly expensive. I'll be giving this one a miss next time.

Suggitts home made ice cream is well known in the area -it is delicious! However the staff are usually on the grumpy and miserable side I am sorry to report! Some customer service training wouldn't go amiss!

Iv'e been coming here since I was a kid. The ice cream is different from any other Iv'e tasted. There is only one flavor but why change something that's so great. There is also a little cafe here. Across the road is a beautiful waterfall and seating area. Always busy but you soon get served.

We come here for ice cream quite often and it is without doubt the best ice cream you can get, however sometimes the service leaves a lot to be desired with the staff a little 'miserable'You cannot help but return however, both for the ice cream and also for the selection of old fashioned sweets that you can buy there that you don't see anywhere else anymore. It is also in a fantastic spot with the waterfalls and many lovely walks to experience.

People come from miles around to buy ice cream which comes in 1 flavour and the cafe has not changed in the 30+ years I have lived here. V limited menu, some of the sweets are probably past their best but stick to the ice cream and it can't be beaten (if you like vanilla ice cream!)

What a delicious ice cream they sell but what a great opportunity they have to make it fantastic if they refurbished the coffee shop. It's so drab and cheap and the coffee is terrible. It's been the same for years and years unfortunately.

Cosy and friendly little cafe attached to the Millbry Hill shop but with its own entrance looking out over the bridge and the River Leven in Stokesley. Would definitely recommend the cheese scones.

We were staying at Hunton on holiday and wanted a local cafe so that we didn’t have to drive too far, ‘The Nest’ did not disappoint. What an incredible location, really friendly staff and gorgeous scones. Given that my Mum made thousands of them when we had a restaurant (and hers were always delicious), she gave 10/10 for the cherry one and I’d give the same rating for my yummy cheese one. If you like scones, stunning views and cute animals, this is the place for you!

I've always liked Barkers. It reminds me of the old-fashioned department stores my mum used to drag me around when I was a nipper. Although I didn't relish the prospect all those decades ago, I've developed an appreciation of such a fast disappearing establishment as I've matured. My wife and I live a fair distance away, but we've visited many times over the past 30 years. I'll always remember my wife buying a Phase 8 dress for our oldest daughters wedding in 2007. The choice of products available is impressive, and I've always found the service to be equal to it. Our family will be unwrapping numerous articles on Christmas day that have passed across one of the many counters.

Can’t fault the strawberry picking, but the cafe had ran out of all sorts by 2pm. Pizza’s totally overpriced for the size of them and took ages to be cooked. I appreciate the are cooked fresh on a pizza oven but waiting over half an hour with small, hungry children is not ideal. Ordered a ‘meat’ pizza which was in fact just pepperoni, why it isn’t just advertised as being pepperoni I have no idea. The pizza edges were burnt to a crisp (inedible) not the best experience overall won’t be in a rush to return.

I came here with mam for a cuppa, though partly because another place up the street had closed - at half 2! This is a nice little place with disabled access and a mixed toilet, which I didn't have an issue with. They had just stopped serving food when we got there but we weren't hungry anyway after a cooked breakfast at Mainsgill on the A66.
