Agree with the last reviewer. I don’t care how good his sourdough is it doesn’t give him the right to be rude and aggressive towards the people coming to buy it. Been here a few times as live locally but never again.

I'm a big fan of the Breakfast Danish in this place. However, my recent visit was spoiled by the unbelievably rude tetchy attitude of the baker. The afore mentioned danish, usually a delight, was like ashes in my mouth on this occasion. Time for either a career change or a back of house role fella.

Step inside Sugardough in Hove, and you’re whisked away to a whimsical realm where loaves leap off shelves and cappuccinos charm with frothy flourish. This isn’t just a café; it’s a buttery beacon for bread enthusiasts. The moment I crossed the threshold, a symphony of aromas, warm bread, freshly ground coffee, and a hint of nostalgic sweetness, greeted me. The décor, an eclectic mix of rustic tables and quirky knick-knacks, felt like the cosy kitchen of a master baker friend. Seated by the window, I ordered the house special: avocado toast. But dear reader, this was no ordinary toast. The Sugardough was crusty and tangy, the avocado creamy and adorned with chilli flakes and olive oil. Each bite was a testament to the alchemy of simplicity. The staff, a merry band of Sugardough savants, moved with grace, their genuine warmth transforming the café into a convivial retreat. As a child, I adored rum balls, elusive orbs of rich chocolate and rum that seemed to vanish before I could claim them. Imagine my delight finding them here. Sugardough’s rum balls didn’t disappoint; each bite balanced deep chocolate with a warm, rum embrace, a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Next, I indulged in their famed carrot cake, moist, spiced, with walnut crunch and cream cheese frosting. It was a hug in cake form. Sipping my perfectly brewed, strong black coffee, I watched the world go by, feeling utterly content. Sugardough in Hove isn’t just about food, though the food is spectacular. It’s about the experience, the warmth, the feeling of being somewhere special. If you find yourself in Hove, step into Sugardough. Let its charm transport you to a world where good bread and great company reign supreme. It’s a slice of heaven, with a side of whimsy.

A great bakery in Hove is a place that I always visit whenever I'm down there. The sausage rolls are delicious and the pastries are baked to perfection. The servings are also quite generous, so it's worth the price. It's like a little slice of heaven near Hove Seafront.

Sunday morning 9.45, came to see if there was any sausage rolls available,my father who is currently in hospital loves them , popped my head in and politely said “ any sausage rolls or bit early “ to be greeted by a guy in a white chef jacket , owner or baker? Snapping at me “ way early” I then said “what time “ to which he snapped again “1.30” !! We come here often for the best sausage rolls, but every time he’s off or rude , his customer skills are atrocious, next time I won’t hold my tongue, food is lovely but ridiculously expensive to eat in, and on busy days it’s ridiculously slow because of staff faffing about! Get someone in there who knows what they are doing re the public and serving them, and someone who loves the job, not someone with zero people skills who thinks they are doing you a favour!!

My parents and I recently visited this restaurant for brunch and tried their coffee, pastries, and sausage rolls. While the croissant and sausage rolls were enjoyable, we were disappointed with the coffee. The 'barista' seemed unfamiliar with the term 'long black,' and we were served a weak small Americano instead. The water used in all the coffees was far too hot and affected the taste, making them mediocre at best. At £22 for four coffees, two sausage rolls, and a croissant, we felt that the price was not justified, given the underwhelming coffee experience. Overall, we had hoped for a better dining experience and left feeling unsatisfied.

I think this is a lovely bakery but today I sat in and watched the chef cough over the food and wipe his nose with hand and then continue to prepare the food. The kitchen is open and he clearly saw I was looking at him while he wiped his nose and licked his fingers and continue to make the food. I could not finish my food. Complete heath hazard. I've been a regular customer at Sugardough for many years. The food is amazing, although well above inflation price rises make it a treat now rather than somewhere i go regularly. But what lets it down is the quality of staff. I must say some of the staff are great, but its so inconsistent. OK, you have high staff turn-over, but this is not an excuse for poor training and sometimes rudeness. Prices are not clearly displayed for bread etc and mistakes are common - the discount for using a 'keep-cup' is almost never applied.

Wafts of freshly baked bread entice you into this little café/bakery. Cosy atmosphere with the baking being done right in front of you. Lots of wonderful looking cakes and pastries, some nice looking savories as well, but a bit inflexible as to how they are served. We were interested in having a spinach and goats cheese pastry but told we could only have it as a meal with salad etc. For more money which at 10am we didn’t really want. It has a nice ambiance, with lots of interesting baking related knick-knacks and nice old fashioned cutlery and crockery, quite a few of the other people were regulars and it is also dog friendly. I had strong coffee with non-diary milk, a savoury pastry, and granola cereal. The pastry had a cold boiled egg in which was a little odd, and the granola dish was too cloying with thick yogurt, I also prefer granola with texture, not completely soft like this was. To takeaway, I bought a loaf of freshly baked bread which at £3.70 for a small loaf I thought was excessive. For me the ambience here is better than the food, you probably also fare better here if you have a sweet tooth, I thought their savoury selection was a weaker than their sweet selection. Also I think it’s absurd not to let customers have things how they want to have them, and be careful where you sit, I sat too close to the counter and had reverberations through my chair every time the coffee grounds were emptied into the bin!

This is a strange place. From the outside walking past you think to yourself wow what a nice little bakery when so many are going bust or just no longer viable in local communities this looks like it should be great. Certain parts of it are. The waiting staff are wonder. But then you soon realise that it is one of those places that really disappoints us every time we visit to the point of now thinking what's the point we are just wasting our money. The problem are the owners. Their egos and interfering with what is happening front of house turns what could be a really nice place into one you can wait to get out of. This happened this Saturday: "hello can I have three sausage rolls and two cups of tea please?" Yes sure would you like that to take away or eat in? "We hoped to sit outside if that's okay." Oh okay but if you eat a sausage roll 'in' then you have to have it as a meal with salad. "Oh well we just want some sausage rolls and some tea please, (looking at each other - shall we just take them away). No it's okay go ahead and sit outside it will be okay. "Great thanks can we have normal breakfast tea, thanks?" Now that seems like a easy thing and no problems. We found out that you can't just order a sausage roll you have to have it as a meal which we though was over the top but the woman who served us was polite, funny and easy to deal with. We sit outside and three sausage rolls turn up. No tea. 5 minutes later one tea turns up. Hello we ordered two teas please. Again the woman apologised and returned inside. Still no new tea. Out comes Ego-controlling-owner number one who clears all the other tables but not the one we are sat at which was actually the dirty one. Strange. Then as he returns to go indoors he barks at my girlfriend that she is breaking the law and forcing him to contravene VAT laws by ordering take away but eating it inside. We politely explain what we had ordered and the conversation we had with the waiter but no that wasn't good enough for him he continued to strangely accuse us of breaking the law. BREAKING THE LAW. Mmmmmm. Oh and still no second cup of tea. Sausage rolls are eaten one tea drunk when the second tea turns up. However by this time we had had enough and got up to walk with our tea being made to feel extremely unwelcome. Half way down the road and oh that's not breakfast tea it's completely something else. £12 for 3 sausage rolls 2 cups of tea and getting shouted at by a passive aggressive incompetent owner is not what I would call a bargain or good serve. And that's the problem with this place. The serving staff are great. They work in cramped conditions in a busy cafe and they do a good job but these two owner/idiots are ruining their own business by constantly going behind the counter interfering with every order and barking instructions to the staff that do nothing but cause problems and interference and leads to mistakes and errors. If they were serving great food then that might be okay. I've worked in numerous kitchens in my past career as a chef and sometimes it gets stressful but bringing that stress and obnoxious toxicity front of house just makes you look like idiots. I could stop here but it's not the main problem. Secondly the baking just isn't good enough. I've been here on 4 separate occasions. The bread is under every time to the point of being raw in the middle my first trip. Second trip we had to go through 5 pastries before we found one that wasn't burned on top the cinnamon buns were dry and stale and as for the last trip it has now become a right off. If you are good at your job then be arrogant and obnoxious but these two bakers aren't. They are just scraping through as competent and adding to the obnoxious egotism and lack of skills front of house it has turned what could be a great cafe into a useless one. It would be great to support a small independent place like this as there isn't enough but this isn't the place to give your support too. Luckily there are loads of other great places within a stones throw of this place.

Very expensive, to eat in they charge DOUBLE!!! We got a take away then. We spent over £20 for a take away tea, coffee and a few pastries. The sausage rolls were very poor quality, no meat just cooked fat and veg. Spinach and ricotta pastries had no salt in them and therefore very bland. My husband is allergic to citrus fruit and his favourite cake is a trickle tart. We asked whether there's any lemon in it, as I know that in some shops they add lemon juice. The girl didn't kniw and asked a guy who very confidently said there's no lemon in it. That treacle tart was more lemony than lemon curd and tasted like a bad lemon tart! When it comes to allergies they should not mislead people as their health is involved. Definitely won't be back.

Arrived at lunch time, looking for a simple bakery treat. As we walked inside we were told to sit down and that it was table service. Even though it wasn’t busy we were waiting for what seemed like forever for our orders to be taken. We asked for a sausage roll (that we had seen in the window) a pain au chocolate and an elderflower. My boyfriends pain au chocolate was taken from the window display and brought to our table along with his drink. I sat for at least 10 minutes after...still waiting for mine. By this point he had already eaten. I saw the waitress take the sausage roll from the window on a plate downstairs....12 minutes later we asked where it was. She said “we have taken it into the kitchen, it is being cooked and will he served with a potato salad”. HUH? I ASKED FOR A SAUSAGE ROLL! so, after a few rude stares from the staff members they simple brought me a cold sausage roll on a plate. But, it looked weird so I refused it. £5 wasted, awful service, do not visit!

Really lovely homemade sausage rolls, croissants, chef made damson jam and the ability to watch the magic happening on site as pies were prepared! Fantastically tempting array! Perfect located by the seafront in Hove so you could take coffee and & cake to the beach.

Stayed in an Air BnB nearby and popped in to keep warm - was not disappointed with the fantastic coffee and cakes...so much that we came back the following more for pastries. Staff were really friendly and didn't bat an eyelid when we walked in with a pushchair and 2 young children, and were more than accommodating.

We came for an early breakfast and were served quickly. Asked what would we like after a look around. Took coffee, tea and 3 pastries, which were great in taste and look so ordered one more. We were served outside by the member of staff who brought first our hot drinks and then food, and ensured if we needed anything else he'd be inside to help us out. Would return and recommend to anyone!

I went at 1pm on Sunday and I think they were overwhelmed by the takeout crowd, only a few tables were occupied. We ordered a tart and a sausage roll. They took forever. When they did come they were overcooked; the pastry was too crisp and blackened in places. Not my cup tea.

I love going to any one of the sugardough bakerys. I always get great service and the baked goods there are brilliant. The cakes and pastries are especially good, though be it a little more than I would usually pay.

Every time we visit Hove the first thing I do is go here to buy a sausage roll, they are the best ever. A lovely quaint little restaurant, friendly staff & delicious sausage rolls.

nice and quiet location in the peaceful Hove, away from the madness of Brighton. outside tables. coffee, cakes, croissants and more. you can actually see the bakers making and decorating them. very positive atmosphere. staff is kind. I usually have a flat white and a slice of cake and it comes around 6 £, worth it, since they're both delicious. savory brunch options available. vegetarian/vegan bites available as well.

We had breakfast there and we loved it! I got the selection of bread with butter and jam and it was delicious. Coffee was really nice as well and service was really good. We went back the day after just to buy a loaf of bread and bring it back to London. Would definitely recommend this place for Breakfast!

Sugardough smashes all other sausage rolls out of the park with their flakey buttery pastry and excellent free range meats. They try to use as much local and organic produce as possible, make cracking coffees, cakes, biscuits and quiches. The selling point for us is their excellent bread selection, allowing dogs inside the bakery seating area and the Australian classic Yo-Yo biscuit. Long may they bake

Lovely little place, my friend recommended as she's bought pastries to take away before. Staff friendl, prices reasonable and the food was beautiful. I had a Tomato and Goats Cheese tart, which came served with a leafy salad and beetroot chutney. Flavours were subtle and delicious, it was so tasty!

We popped in here this morning for the first time. We asked if we ordered at the counter or the table, and were asked to take a seat, it was table service. 20 minutes later we were still waiting for someone to take our order, while 2 couples that came in after us had their order taken. We left after another 5 minutes of being ignored. We won't be back.

Went into Small Batch, Hove Station at 4.20 pm yesterday. I ordered a coffee as a dine-in customer. Was told that I would have to use a take away cup as they would be closing soon. I left but not before telling the cashier that I would have drunk my coffee within 10 minutes. Small Batch website indicates that they close at 5.00 pm. BTW there were no other customers. Anyway, I went down the road and gave another coffee shop my business.

Unfortunately, even though there were many things right I'll be avoiding this place. The service was impeccable, good beer, perfect lighting and lovely music. So what was wrong? A coven of aggressive women believing they ran the place because they'd booked a table. At their request the music, that I'd been enjoying, was turned off so they could conduct their meeting whilst sipping peppermint tea. I'd suggest a pub isn't an ideal place for this sort of thing. Especially if you're hell-bent on spoiling the atmosphere for everyone else. Sadly, they're regulars.

Absolutely excellent. Had the calamari starter and the small plate of scallops which was exquisite. Glass of Whispering Angel rosé to accompany. Recommended.

Walking through Kemptown we stumbled across this place. Is very small but has a much needed and appreciated outside area. The barman was lovely & sitting there watching the world walk by in the sun enjoying cold alcoholic beverages was gorgeous.

Best hot donuts ever. This is my favourite place to have donuts in Brighton. I wanted to tag them on Facebook but couldn't..
