I’ll never eat at Rick Steins again, over priced, under cooked chips, over cooked fish. Contacted twice to share my experience and they never responded. Awful and there are plenty of places better for a lot less.

Being local and never had Steins takeaway before we saw the forgotten fish and chips on the menu at the excellent price of £11 . Fish was pouting and was lovely, plenty to eat, chips not greasy and tasty, tartar sauce homemade and delicious. After reading the reviews I was pleasantly surprised. Will use again and definitely try the next forgotten fish on the menu.

A few picnic benches with parasols are around the back of the restaurant, situated next to the road. We sat here as we had our dog with us, a bowl of clean, ice water was supplied for dogs. The wait for our order was approx 20 minutes. Two cod and chips, plus two very small extras and two soft drinks came to just over £46, including VAT over £7.00. My husband enjoyed his. I thought the fish batter too greasy and altogether very expensive for what we had. Considering whose name is attached we felt the fish and chips were average, we have had much better and would not go back.

I can't fault the service, and the place had a very nice atmosphere to it, but I'm afraid the quality of the food does not match the price. Yes it was edible, and the cod was high quality, but the portion size was small, the chips were tasteless, and the scampi was definitely out of a packet from the freezer. If prices were lower, I probably would've given a higher rating, but I think you are definitely paying for the name here. I wouldn't return sadly.

The fish (Haddock)was exceptional the batter light thin and cooked perfectly the chips seemed to dry as they cooled but this is par for the course with chips cooked in dripping overall you can definitely tell the influence of the man in the training of the fryers in this restaurant I can also highly recommend the cheeseburger with hallumi cheese the homemade salsa is worth the price of entry here I found it overall great food the price is reasonable I personally think a lot of the poor reviews seem to be jumping on the band wagon of a certain you tuber and if he thinks this food is poor then he doesn’t frankly know what he’s talking about this is a chip shop after all it’s great food at a decent price maybe if your searching for more aim higher and head for his restaurant overall foodies won’t be disappointed 8.5 out of ten for a chippy ? Fish and chips are my favourite - I was very excited to try Rick Steins Cod and Chips (sit down in restaurant). Seriously, I couldn’t be more disappointed 😢 The quality of the cod is great (can’t fault it) However, the batter is mediocre and a bit bland. It comes with a sauce I’m guessing it’s garlic mayo but does not help or enhance the flavour in the cod 🧐 Now let’s talk about the chips - what a let down! Dry, weird texture and no amount of salt and vinegar would improve them. 2 x cod & chips, Pot of tea for 2 £61.00. Do yourself a favour and go somewhere else in Padstow (wish I had)! And for the record Whitby are 1000% way superior to Rick Steins offering 🤨

We got seated straight awat by a friendly host and then ordered the whiting, which came with chips and tartar sauce, and fish finger sandwich and a side of chips. The fish finger sandwich was delicious as was the whiting and tartar sauce but the chips were definitely not the best I've had. At the end of the day it was just Fish and chips no different to any other chippy in the country. What made it here was the sharing platter £35 for chips (and plenty of them) well cooked typical seaside chips, four good sized portions of fish (whitng, bass, coley and haddock) were tasty, well cooked, hot and not greasy. Came with mushy peas, curry sauce and tartare all very welcome and very nice. It was a lot quieter than we anticipated but soon started to fill up as we were leaving. Pleasant, friendly and attentive staff. Well worth a visit if down Padstow/Newquay way but to be honest it’s a tick exercise just to say you’ve done it rather than anything outstanding but can’t fault the quality.

Took around an hour to get served (we were only a table of two). The food was nice but not exactly worth the wait nor the price they were going to charge us (which was around £65). Had a member of staff telling us they could drop our fish now (bearing in mind we ordered a starter which they completely missed and told us they didn't get enough of it out of the freezer) definitely a tourist trap, they prioritised the takeaway that's joined onto it, asked to moved tables which is fair enough, but to be put in the window seats to be forgotten about along with another couple, we were the only 4 not eating and waiting for food. They did apologise and knocked some money off the bill. We will be trying somewhere else next time.

I had the special: lemon sole goujons with chips. The lemon goujons were good, but I ordered this after reading Ricks own website about this recipe, in which he states it should be served with a liberal serving of tartar sauce. Unfortunately, despite the starting premium price, the sauce is not included and they want me to order in addition, which is a shame as having ate the meal without it, it would have made the meal. Seriously, this is just fish and chips and bang average fish and chips at that. Honestly, I've had better chips from our corner takeaway back home, than this. For four adults having cod and chips and a bottle of wine cost us over £135 to sit in a cramped, noisy bar. Somebody tell Rick that this is NOT fine dining - that's over the road in his own restaurant, which you expect to pay a little bit more for. I still can't get over being charged £2.25 for a tiny, tiny little pot of mayonnaise when most places have it on the table in a sachet. I should also mention that service charge is atoumatically added to the bill, which we refused to pay as the table service was so poor. Eight staff in the place and only one person serving tables was truely taking the Micky. Wake up Rick!!!

There’s a good reason it gets poor reviews…. OK, the fish was excellent. The chips were rubbish. It’s expensive but the prices are printed on the menu so you know what you’re letting yourself in for I guess. But I doubt many people notice the bit about a 7.5% (discretionary) service charge. And frankly, this is a disgrace. I suppose I hoped it would all be a much better experience given Stein’s public image…. £2.00 for tartare sauce is a bit of a pisstake too. And as for onefeedstwo? Rick Stein won’t take any notice of this review but it is an honest appraisal. Fish great but all fish in Padstow should be great. Small portions however but batter good. Chips good, although I’d personally like them cooked a bit longer. Tartare sauce excellent, best I’ve had. Mushy peas were grey and cold. We asked for fresh hot mushy peas and were told a few minutes. Nobody came near us again. We asked towards the end of the meal if they were coming and was told a few more minutes. I said it was getting a bit late and was told “no worries”they were coming. I didn’t like the attitude and said that actually it spoilt the experience. We were ignored at that point until we asked for the bill. Some of the bill had been reduced but we wouldn’t go back. Better establishments in Padstow.

Upon arriving at Rick Stein's in Newquay, I was greeted by a beautiful location right beside a stunning beach. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed that day, so I quickly made my way to Rick Stein's in Padstow instead. Although the setting there wasn’t quite as scenic, it did offer ample Pay and Display parking near the harbour. The shop was impeccably clean and tidy, and the staff were pleasant and polite. While the food was certainly on the pricey side, which I expected, it was well-presented with high-quality ingredients, as I also expected from an establishment owned by such a celebrated chef. The cod and chips came in a fairly average portion size; a few extra chips would have been welcome. The cod itself was fresh and thick, and the beef dripping batter added a noticeable depth of flavour to what was otherwise slightly bland cod. I found the chipati to be well overpriced for what it offered. The fish burger, on the other hand, was delicious, served in a fresh brioche bun with a crisp salad. The mushy peas and tartare sauce were both very tasty. In summary, although the food was high quality and well presented, I felt it didn’t entirely justify the premium price. However, I’d gladly return anytime for the delicious, super-crunchy, non-greasy scraps! During my visit to Rick Stein’s Fish and Chip shop in Padstow, I was impressed by the entire experience. The service was fast, friendly, and efficient; my order of cod and chips arrived quickly, perfectly hot, and ready to enjoy. The cod was exceptionally fresh, with a smooth, delicate flavor that paired well with crispy, golden chips. The mushy peas and tartar sauce had a unique, delightful twist that added to the meal’s appeal. The cleanliness of the restaurant was also noteworthy. Everything was spotless, from the tables to the menus—no sticky fingerprints or smudges anywhere, which added to the overall impression of quality and care. For dessert, I had a chocolate brownie. Although it appeared quite simple on the plate, the taste was outstanding—rich and satisfying. In my opinion, this was great value for money, and I would highly recommend Rick Stein’s Fish and Chip shop to anyone visiting Padstow.

Service was ok quick to take our order and bring our food but they didn't bring us cutlery so my husband had to take some from a table laid in the window. In addition a service charge was already added to the bill, given we had to get our own cutlery not totally happy. Another couple sharing our table also made similar comments, saying not as good as when they previously visited and the mushy peas he ordered were a very insipid pale green colour. Our local chip shop would knock spots off Steins very disappointing.

Not the best fish and chips or service. Black spots, under cooked frozen chips. Soft batter on the fish and a bit tastes less

Fish and chips are consistently excellent and worth the extra. Perfect after cycling the Camel Trail!

Fantastic fish and chips - and more - good menu with hake, cod, haddock, sea bass, etc. Your choice of grilled or battered fish. Really nice beef dripping chips. Great value for money - no more expensive (and possibly a bit cheaper) than fish and chips in other Padstow locations. Be prepared to queue when busy- but definitely worth the wait! Great staff.

Lovely food but a 40 minute wait for two portions of fish and chips off season in the middle of the week was unexpected.

My other half wanted to go to his restaurant, we didn't because I couldn't justify the cost of item's on the menu, so went to his chippy instead, I liked the location but that was all, are you paying for quality food or his name above the door ? You decide when you visit...

Very average quality food and expensive. £17 for scampi (7 pieces) and a handful of floury chips. Tartar sauce was basically just mayonnaise. Plenty of better chippys.

Nice place, very clean and the staff were lovely, unfortunately I found the chips too greasy and had no flavour but oil. It may of been a one off, so I would recommend going and trying them out yourself. Everyone has different tastes and it could be perfect for you 😊

I could write one of these good revuews every week. Frasers has to be the best F and C shop in town just had GF fish and chips and OMG they were perfection. Beautiful white fish, gorgeous GF batter and golden crisp chips thank you Mia, you're a star. Thank you too to Frasers for making GF available any day of the week. It is appreciated.
