Star of India in South Tyneside

If you're looking for Indian food, this place might not be the best choice. The dishes had a lot of colour additives, making them look like Indian cuisine, but they didn't have the authentic taste of Indian spices. The cost is not very cheap as well. Overall, it was disappointing.

👤 All the staff were very friendly from the minute we stepped into the door. Once we had our food a member of staff checked on us in under 10 minutes ⏱️The wait time for each dish (Starter, main and dessert) to arrive perfect 💰£15-20/ pp. We decided to go for the Starter, main and dessert deal which came to a total of £33 (rounded)- just over £15 per person. ✅ A great price for the portion sizes and quality of the food! ⭕️Decor could do with a little update but the only improvement I would offer ❤️Would recommend to anyone deciding between which curry place to go on Ocean road :)

Food was awfull will not be ordering from there ever again star of India

That was not nice at all or fresh, chicken was combination of breast , thigh, leg the works but texture or taste questionable, had better shop bought madras sauces and we order curries twice/three times a week. Complete let down and one full curry binned which normally keep for next day. Hoping chef or freezer/microwave had a bad day.

Firstly this review is 100%genuine. I have been here recently and had a decent chicken tikka balti meal. It wasnt the best I've ever had but not the worst either. Flavours could be improved especially the balti sauce. Service was excellent and a decent restaurant.

Well, whatever the other reviews say, good or bad, these guys keep getting it right for me, and that's the main thing! 😀 if you have never tried them they are worth a punt. just had lamb balti, was beautiful.

Oh dear, how the mighty falls. Once the pinnacle of the Ocean Road curry experience, on tonight's showing The Star Of India has become a haven for grandstanding, foul-mouthed male diners whose sadly apparent Tourettes cannot even compromised by eating. We informed our waiter of the situation but nothing was done, presumably because the offending table had four diners compared to our mere two. That a table of four ladies was adjacent also appeared to have no effect. This ruined what we hoped would be a pleasant dining experience. The food was good - not great - but reasonable value, as has usually been the case with this very long established restaurant. However, even had the meal been of exceptional quality I very much doubt it would have countered our discomfort at the atmosphere created by those four professional cursers, all of which were of an age to know much better how to converse in the presence of others. Sorry, Star Of India - but your apparent indifference to such behaviour has put us off from ever returning to your establishment.

Tasty scammy. Got to watch these restaurants- asked for 1/2 pint- gave me 1 pint. Asked for £8.20 balti chicken- he said “chicken breast”- dunno- thought chicken- did not state breast is extra. Charged me £9. Food is ok but decor a bit grubby/ old. RETURNED AGAIN- chicken korma and boiled rice set meal. All hot and tasty. Added 80p to my bill and claimed it was chicked breast (despite NEVER asking me and the chicken is the same as the “normal”- just chicken nugget sized chunks). So WATCH IT !!!!!

The staff was so rude and don’t even respectful towards Indian Customers. We have visited there with friends. They have served us dirty water in unhygienic way and the particles in the water were clearly visible. When asked upon they said in a very rude way, the restaurant waiter was so rude he started blaming us for asking water even. He said that we should ask for mineral water rather than normal water. Pathetic service were given by those staff while pointing out fingers over the customers and they said they don’t like to serve indian customers. All of them totally mannerless! I won’t recommend anyone going there as they are not Indian some bangladeshis but running the restaurant in the name of India just for the sake of attracting customers and nabbing monies from the customers. They should behave how to treat with the customers first before running a restaurant. Absolutely no stars for them! Should change their name rather than misleading customers in the name of India. You have been warned!!! If you don’t want to waste your money or don’t want to get food poisoning better check out somewhere authentic Indian restaurant who knows how to behave with the customers in the right manner.

My friend was treated horribly here. They served my friend dirty water and when she informed about it, she was told to leave. It really disturbed her and ruined her weekend. Don’t recommend at all, I would rate it one star based on my friend’s experience as I was planning to visit as well.

UNHYGIENIC RESTAURANT WITH RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL PEOPLE. They are just spoiling the name of India. Firstly staff working there don't know how to behave with customer, while asking for dish they don't know how to explain about it zero knowledge. They gave us menu to go through and when we asked for Raita and show the price on menu they asked us to check online menu. What is the point of having staff and physical menu there when we need to check menu online.? Then when we placed the order one of the staff made comment " WE DON'T SERVE INDIANS", how can one make such comments - WE were discriminated. One of them just on our looked at us and made another unprofessional comment " WE KNOW YOU ARE STUDENTS" how do u know we are students or not???? And why does that matter to you guys we were paying for the dish with we planned to order. We were not having that for free.! When asked for water they served us dirty water with Balck & yellow particles inside and that too Dirty glass (all glasses were dirty).When asked for the replacement they began raising voice on us started being rude and argumentative, said don't tell us what to do and asked us to leave. And Said "THIS IS NOT INDIA" Then why you guys are serving on the name of India why are you using name of India if you guys can't serve Indians??? JUST IMAGINE THEY MUST BE USING THAT DIRTY WATER IN THE COOKING WHICH THEY SERVE TO THE CUSTOMER. IF THEY CAN SEVERE DIRTY WATER TO CUSTOMER THEN HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT'S GOING BEHIND, HOW THEY ARE PREPARING MEAL FOR ALL CUSTOMERS HAVING FOOD AT THIS RESTAURANT. Thanks to God we left that restaurant, else we would have had consumed that unhygienic food at that pathetic and disgusting restaurant. I would never ever recommend this place to anyone on the risk of Hygiene factor.

The service of the restaurant was very poor. We just asked for the water, but the glasses were dirty. We asked to change it, but the waiters were soo rude with us. I will never visit the restaurant again.

Been coming here for over 50 years. NEVER EVER have had a bad experience. Over the years the staff have & are warm & welcoming without being obtrusive. The food choice is typical traditional curries with chefs specials which are always delivered hot and tasty. The 3 course special are superb value from £11.95 for starters, mains/rice, sweet or coffee. We'll Be Back.

Well. Im list for words. We have had and always enjoyed our meals from both at home and inside the restaurant of The Star of India. But the one we had delivered last night was terrible and ended up in the bin. It was laced with onions very little chicken and waa definately not the quality of meal we were accustomed to from The Star of India. So much so im sorry guys it has put us of returning.

chicken tikka moussaka water very little taste don't think I will be using again. tried 15 dif take away and restaurants since moving here from Newcastle and can't find anywhere that can compare

Food never arrived, called to query where food was told to wait another hour on the two already waited. After waiting three hours food still didn’t arrive, staff had marked food as delivered, extremely disappointed in star of India, had been a long time customer but unfortunately after this I will no longer return. If you would like to have the food you paid for actually delivered I would avoid star of India at all costs.

I have tried all the Indian restaurants in ocean road and without doubt this one if by far the worst, in fact it's the worst Indians i have ever had. I have had better frozen meals from Iceland for £2.99. you have been warned eat at this establishment at your own peril.

Just want to say the waiters are very kind and polite but will not be returning. Food was awful, I opted for bhuna prawn, the prawns still had big poo sacks inside which like anybody would put them off. Came to our mains beef madras, egg and mushroom pilau and chips with a garlic Nan. Our garlic Nan bread was very tough like it had been sat there a while with a perfume taste, our beef madras was a mixture between very fatty or dry, and the sauce had no flavour towards it. Our rice left a powdered texture like taste in our mouths and was very mushy, chips 10/10 can’t go wrong. Complaining gives me way too much anxiety I never want to come across rude or impolite so just said everything was fine. I felt a little awkward as everytime I looked up all waiters were looking across to me. Maybe because I wasn’t eating my food or just scanning the place at the same time I was to look up. But like I said; they were very polite and lovely, but unfortunately will never be returning.

Good food & great service. When we visit we always get a great welcome & shown to "our table". First class everything & if you have never been you should try it. You won't be disappointed.

We visit the star of India regularly, unfortunately we will never visit again, we were treat appallingly, we booked a table like we always do, we had literally just finished our meal but still had drinks left and the waiter came to our table with our bill and said “I’ve been told I have to give you your bill as we need the table”, they had people just walking in and not booking like we did wanting a table, we weren’t offered the opportunity to order anything else, never again and I will never recommend either

We visited here last night and can honestly say we were not disappointed. We were well greeted and given a cosy table even though we hadn't booked. The food was absolutely amazing we could not fault it, meat was so tender and full of flavour. We were served with a smile and nothing was too much bother. Would highly recommend. We will visit again. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Food delivered late and luewarm

I Côme here almost every week and hands down best food/ restaurant I’ve ever been too, food is amazing and the staff are so so lovely would definitely recommend, best restaurant on ocean road🙌🏽

Arrived late with poor updates on Just Eat app. Had to call restaurant asking for update. Arrived 1hr 15 mins after ordering, 15 mins later than app stated. Unfortunately food quality was poor as it seemed it had been sitting for too long once cooked; soft popadoms, moist naan bread, soggy bhaji. Will go elsewhere in future. Disappointing due to cost of this takeaway.

Delicious and amazing value ! Got a delicious Lamb bhuna- so tender- melt in the mouth , aromatic and nice flavours Partner got a chicken dish Mixed starter - nice ! King prawn puri - puri was so crisp but soft and delicious Rice is soft and fluffy , Really recommend this for takeaway

The restaurant decor is a little strange with window views lining the walls, definitely needs a facelift, the furniture is also a little retro. The staff are friendly and efficient. The food is excellent, great tasting authentic curries, old school menus with a great choice. The special menus are fantastic value, even the normal menu is very reasonable. The portions are good and the quality of food is excellent as are the flavours, can recommend the madras, the Nan breads are also great. The coffees are also excellent.

I visit the restaurant with my family we ordered starter seekh kabab the meat is out of date too smelly no taste I told one of staff member he said you still have to pay I said ok . No apologise nothing very rude after we ordered main course Curry's chicken tikka balti chicken tikka bunna. Absolutely rubbish onion gravy no taste at all . Chicken tikka masala. And karma was ok . I came from Nottingham to see my family we decide we meal together .we Never go back the restaurant .we don't like them Indian Curry's I only give 1⭐

Food was adequate but not good service & didn't feel very welcomed. We ordered 2 glasses of diet coke which were completely flat after 3 sips. The waiter took them away & then used the same flat coke remaining from the bottle he had used before & topped up from a new bottle, neither of which must not of been kept in the fridge, hence warm coke. This was witnessed by my partner. Again after 3 sips the coke was completely flat again. As we weren't happy we told another waiter about this who denied that they would do this & just repeated saying that they've been their for 65 years. I said but the coke is still flat. Waiter repeated his rant & walked away. Very rude & was difficult not to go further with this. Paid & left & vowed we would never return.

Always a lush meal. Loads of food. So doggy bag it is. 100% defo worth a visit one of my best curry houses in shields.

Always great food from Star of India

I have used this place on and off for years but every time I go in recently and order a takeaway m the staff seem to get more surly, miserable and keep their eyes on you at all times! It’s very uncomfortable. The prices have shot in too so will return to the curry centre where you get a warm greeting and good priced quality food.

Arrived around 7pm Bank Holiday Sunday 30/April/2023. Fairly busy but enough seats to accommodate my daughter and myself. Busy but friendly enough & as efficient as usual. Ordered a starter to share Bhuna chicken in puree, lamb dopiaza, lamb roghan, garlic naan, onion pilau & chips. 2 drinks each. No problems until the bill comes, Charged 14.45 for roghan!!! Queried this and was told we had ordered from the special menu. Rubbish, tried again and still got the bill over £40 00. Brought the menu over and went through it with usually friendly waiter and got a different total again. He walked away shaking his head saying mistakes happen. Went through the bill again and it turns out the original was near 8 quid more than it should have been - equivalent to another main course, I think not... Check the bill, especially if they are busy... Otherwise really enjoyed it

Hi Guys, this is about the tenth time i have visited this restaurant over the last couple of years and can confirm i have 'never' had a bad experience. The food is always amazing, great evening special menu as at great price and the food is always served quickly. The Staff are amazing too, always polite and attentive. You must give this a try, i guarantee you wont be disappointed.

The plain sauce was awful. All spice no taste the mint sauce was empty as had leaked over the whole order in bag and poppadoms weee soft again as in same bag getting steam. Normally very good but the whole plain curry was binned.

Food was over an hour late, staff less than helpful on the phone.

Waiters very rude and pushy on that day

Went for a 21st birthday with family food was beautiful however staff were rude couldn’t wait until we finished , couldn’t enjoy our meals with them standing or watching us eat! We all felt uncomfortable and had to leave and take our food to eat at home instead.

Popped in after my Daughter finished the Great North Run. The restaurant was empty, but poor weather was bringing people from the run into the restaurant. I have been to this restaurant many times, and service has been fine. I found the staff to be rude and could not wait for us to leave. I recommend people to give this place a miss, very greedy staff. Don't think I will return

This is my favourite India restaurant in South Shields and the food is great. They do meal deals most nights and we’ll worth the money.

Payed extra for chicken breast however 2 bones in the chicken curry .sadly wasn't. Nice very salty Poppadoms soft very disappointed..

We both both went out at first. Then decide get curry so we thought this curry place because it's gorgeous. Going back on Saturday with him I can not wait. So friendly inside and food came quickly and very gorgous xx

The food was incredibly terrible. None of the ten of us were even remotely satisfied. The biryani had no salt, and when we inquired about it, they said they don't add salt to the food and suggested adding table salt ourselves. If we have to add salt, then what's the point of dining at a restaurant.

Positives Food is always tasty and good quality great taste as its freshly cooked , Negatives just the one which is I would of liked a little more chicken tikka in my masala... delivery was quick and food arrived piping hot. Value for money is good and would definitely use again.

Went lastnight in a large group. The service was poor and found the staff ignorant, literally walking past us when we tried to get his attention. Thinking he doesnt speak english, oh he does, he was talking away at the counter after ignoring several of us. left my son waiting for his food, we had just about finished ours before he got his, they actually forgot i think. Waiter spilled a glass of wine and did not offer to replace it but of course got charged. I would not reccommend this place, we could not even move on the seats because they were heavy and pushed together to the point it was just one bench. Overcharged on the bill, £12.95 for a 5 star speacial, he charged each dish individually. Told him and all of a sudden there was a language barrier again. It just wasn't a pleasant experience and will not go there again. Feel like i threw money away.

First time I’ve been to the star for years as the food was always good but the service used to let it down ! Not anymore the service was great and the chicken madras made with leg meat was proper old school none of the diced chicken bought in for the tandoori what most restaurants use these days thoroughly enjoy it I was even tempted to buy another as a takeaway I’ll most certainly be back

We decided to try a garlic chicken starter with a chicken tikka garlic main meal for a change. With the lovely keema naan, poppadoms (they sent 3) and lovely pilau rice it was a lovely meal to end a busy Fathers Day.

Hi guys, we visit this restaurant every couple of months and always have a great time. The food is always amazing quality, loads of meat in the curries and fantastic taste. The 'Evening special menu' has great choice and very reasonably priced. Give it a try, you will be impressed :-) Graham

We hadn’t had an Indian takeaway for a while so after having a poor experience last time at another takeaway we plumped for one of the best in town. Our decision was right. The chicken tikka Garlic and garlic chilli tikka main meals were delicious. Add a fluffy naan with loads of keema mince and tasty mushroom pilau rice and that was a great meal. The chips were fine, we prefer spicy ones but the star of India don’t do them. Value was excellent and that’s something important in these times when treat nights become rarer.

Great quality meals and sundries. One of the best in Ocean Road still.
