dropped by one very quiet Friday evening in Feb. Like half the Indian restaurants on South Shields the place was virtually empty, but this allows personal service.

We hadn't booked a table at our regular restaurant, and it was fully booked so. Gave the Indian Essence a try. But regretted that decision, as soon as we walked through the door there was an overwhelming smell of damp. We both had the special £9.99 on a Saturday, we waited 25 mins for the stater & there was only 2 other table occupied, my onion bahji was tasteless and soggy my husband enjoyed his chicken on purée starter. Our main meals were quick to arrive.My chicken dansak was tasty but chicken had grizzly bits yuk! My mushroom pilau rice was poor mushrooms were black and soggy, my husband enjoyed his chicken saag but his vegetable pilau was very sweet. Disappointing and won't be back.

Second time here for a tandoori mixed grill. Husband had the tandoori cocktail and I had the essence special mixed grill..both had a huge portion of tandoori chicken, which was more like half a chicken, five pieces of chicken tikka and the same again of lamb tikka

If you love Indian food, you definitely should visit Indian Essense! 😍😍😍Their Chicken tikka and Nan oml! 💓💓💓 definitely try this restaurent..

I know it was 12.15am when we went here but we were told they were still open. No sooner was our started served the waiter informed us that they were waiting to close,he constantly came to our table making us feel that we had to rush our meal. If they were closing they should have said before we sat down. Shame we had had a great night till then

Always used indian essence for a take away curry with little trouble over the years however, two weeks ago we had a takeaway delivered with mint sauce that was well past its best. The sauce was poured over the starters before we realised it was inedible, called indian essence and spoke to olly who was more than helpfull and offered us the choice of fresh starters delivered or discount from next order, we decided to accept the discount. Ordered tonight and were told we would not pay full price, upon delivery, we had 50p discounted from the price! Quite an insulting offer for loyal customers! We would have been happy with the price of the starters discounted from the total cost.

Although lacking the glitz of some of its larger, nearby neighbours, if it is quality and choice of food you are after, this is the best in the area.

I loved their chicken tikka👌👌 and nan they are my favourite of all times... Everything is just very yummy.Try this place for sure.Customer service is soooo nice as well. It can be very romantic as well if u go dining with ur partner because the interior is so pretty

first time here and it wont be the last , nice and friendly staff made you feel very welcome , service was spot on our meals were served nice and hot , starter was excellent garlic chicken on puree then i had chicken vindaloo on both counts the chicken was really nice and the sauces first class washed down with a few cobra , i will highly recomend this place if you want a first class curry .

fantastic food. went on Saturday night, we chose the Christmas fayre menu for 9.95. great choice of starters, main course and rice dishes. food was piping hot and very very tasty. naan bread was one of the best we've tasted, papadoms were great too, nice and crispy and not over cooked. the staff were brilliant, very pleasant and courteous. one of the waiters took time to show me how to fold the napkins in a fancy shape. i will be doing that for my xmas table. we will certainly go back.would definitely recommend. lovely meal.

considering i'm approaching my 60th year and having been hooked on indian cuisine for the past 40yrs i like to consider myself a bit of a connoisseur so i have no qualms in recommending "indian essence" .the food is outstanding in both quality and quantity and one component that is often sadly lacking in others is the consistency , it never deviates from one visit to the next , rarely does a week go by that me and the missus dont visit "essence" to get our "fix" ..overall a culinary treat at very little expense ..do yourself a favour and experience "essence" you wont be disappointed..

Vine aquí esta noche por segunda vez este año después de una noche en las fotos y una vez más no nos defraudó. El personal es muy amable y te hacen sentir bienvenido. La comida es muy sabrosa y colorida y de muy buena calidad. Sin duda que no se esconden detrás de decoración pijo como algunas de las otras. Realmente impresionado y siempre volveré aquí. Único inconveniente (que es el mismo de todos los restaurantes en carretera del océano) es la dieta de la temperatura de la habitación de una botella de coca-cola. Debería por lo menos ha sido primera refrigerado! En resumen, muy impresionado.

La comida siempre es increíble y el servicio es muy atento por personal encantador y amable. Sin duda volveremos!

Went to Indian Essence tonight in a group of 4. Warmly welcomed on arrival and were offered a few tables to choose from. We started with popadoms and pickles, there was a bowl of a ground coconut mix which was delicious and something we have never had before. Starters arrived promptly and were very fresh and hot. We were then asked if we would like our mains now or after a short break, we chose to have them straight away and they arrived within 5 minutes. They were delicious and so filling! I could not finish my whole curry so I was offered to take it home with me. Overall very impressed with the food and the service and would definitely return. One of the best curry houses on Ocean Road. The staff have exceptional manners and are very attentive from arrival.

have popped in a few times now late night during the week.you sometimes get a frosty welcome at some on ocean road (radhuni & zeera)but in here they always have a smile on their faces even @ 11 at night!food was spot on ranging in our group from really hot curries down to bhunas.never had a bad or bland meal here ever ! I,ve been in the early evenings too, so this is not a review written with beer goggles on

Visited this restaurant with friends, our starters were OK but the mains were very bland. One waiter was quite rude when he brought out the wrong main meal. He told me that I had definitely ordered it, to which I replied I definitely did not. He wasn't happy about having to replace it. When we left he apologised but it was a little bit to late for my liking. Had better quality food and service in other establishments.

Hi ,We went by chance to this restaurant,it did have an offer on,I think competition on ocean rd is very strong,they are all after same business,Avoid this restaurant,( they would nt eat their own food ) the portions are ok,The food has lots of colourings ( too much ) the quality is terrible,we have been to some of the other Indian places,( which were very good,

Just returned for a visit after a while away. It is a 40 mile round trip for us but happy to say the journey was well worth it.Our time away has been spent visiting restaurants closer to home but the journey is well worth it to get what Indian Essence has to offer.Friendly staff and great food I couldn't fault.There is a vast choice of curry houses on this famed stretch of ocean road and you wouldn't go wrong making your choice Indian Essence.

Off the cuff first time visit to this restaurant last Friday night (26/2/16), got a lovely welcome from staff, made to feel comfortable and welcome, it was a good experience all round the staff, meal and drinks were all great I would definitely recommend this place I will be going back.

Nice friendly staff here , really pleasant . Curry was first class also, if you like a good vindaloo check this place out perfectly spiced well done chef, will be back.

My husband and I went to the Indian essence this evening, we went on the advise of our daughter who swears by them, lovely warm welcome even though we had not made a reservation friendly staff well presented food and the house wine is really, really worth trying. The food was very good with good size portions and real good value for money. Fairly small restaurant which makes it a more intimate feel than some of the larger ones, staff always attentive and notice you without having to try and catch there attention, will definitely be going back soon.

The food is fabulous, will definitely be our local from now on. There are a lot of Indian restaurants in ocean road but I really would recommend people to try here. Very friendly staff too.

we have ate in this restaurant,, and found it very good, so we decided to ring for a take away tonight. it arrived when stated, chicken tikka starters (good) chicken pathia and chicken dupiaza, (good) mushroom pilau and chips, onion salad, 2 poppadoms. good portions,, and would deff ring in again, all for £13.00..thank you.

Not the biggest, not he poshest, but as good as any on Ocean Road. I had King Prawn Sag, good size portions, fresh poppadoms, (not very sophisticated I know, but the chips are amazing!) The staff were friendly and attentive. A good choice.

This is a great curry house with excellent service. I've eaten here a few times and it's my favourite in the area. I'd recommend the Bengali teaser and the vegetable samosas.

We ate here in October half term. It was quiet because it was out of season and there is so much competition along the street (we counted 18 Indian restaurants!). The service was spot on, and the children enjoyed the waiter who is probably also a stand up in his spare time. Food was delicious. We went for the "4 courses for £7.95" deal, and it was great. Choice was from a large menu, and courses were generous but not overwhelming.The only down side was that the toilets, as with so many restaurants, could do with a good spruce up to make them feel cleaner and fresher.

I was working in the area and stopped off for something to eat, the restaurant is nice and clean the staff are delightful spent the whole time talking to oli and lovelyjubbly I ordered the butter chicken, usually I struggle to finish Indian food but I could have eaten this all day long. This is a must try restaurant great food, great staff xxx

Well used this takeaway a lot and just had one tonight 19th sep 2015 and my chicken tikka starter was so dry and special rice not the same and had madras chicken curry no taste and definitely not proper chicken breast well done pompadoms .must have changed chefs.wont use again

Went to Indian Essence for family meal last night, was amazing, food is much tastier than it used to be since there is a new owner. Atmosphere was great with very friendly staff. Food only came to around £10 pp including starter, main, dessert and nan bread. Would defy recommend.Sorry no pictures :(

Went here tonight with the miss's.Couldn't fault the service was in and out there with in 45 minutes and food was up there with the best for price that we paid.Pickle tray 4 pomp 2 starters 2 main 2 Ice creame all for £24.Couldn't fault the food at all!!What a would say is where we were sitting and where they get the cutlery from behind the curtain you could see a bottle of ant repellant which stared at is most the night.Young la that was serving was polite and quick and was always on hand but when not had a tendency to browse his phone.Maybe me not picking a little bit a think if the iron these out it could become one of the best down there.

Went for a meal today with my partner. We ordered two pints of cobra while we decided on what to have. The cobra was flat and luke warm. The starters came bhuna prawn on puree which we thought was quite nice until my partner found a small black hair in with his food. Told the waiter who said" it must be yours it's ginger like you" I must add here he is blonde. They said we will provide you with another plate of food no mention of a sorry. My partner declined the offer. Our main came and was quite nice but we were kind of put off by finding the hair. We paid bill and still did not receive a sorry. Hence no tip for them. Won't be going back.

Forget your bright lights on ocean road visit Indian essence for the taste of unbeatable food great atmosphere and impeccable service best curry house by far cannot be missed

Have been coming to this fab restaurant for a few years now and wouldn't go anywhere else food is amazing and very good value for money. Staff very welcoming and friendly but not pushy nothing is a bother to them cannot wait to go back soon

Indian essence is the best curry house in the South Shields area. It is a modern, clean and comforting environment. The staff are lovely and accommodating nothing is a pick of bother. The food is excellent in terms of taste, portions and presentation, definitely well worth the price. The restaurant prices are very very excellent, for the service you get. After trying many curry houses in the area, we always come to this one!!! Definitely recommend to everyone whether for a small number of individuals or a larger group for an occasion. Very very impressed and will continue to frequent Indian essence :-)

Ordered online from justEat. Was told estimated delivery 45 mins. 1 hr later still no signs so call restaurant to be told driver left 5 mins ago. Bearing in mind we live less than a 5 min drive away. Still nothing after 20 mins and get told Amy minute now. 5 mins later it arrives. Open bag, part order missing so call back again and man on phone clearly angry and Frustrated. Now 2 hrs after ordering we finally REHEAT our like warm curries. Not even a free poppodom for the bad service There's a regular customer gone for you.

The specials menu offers a huge choice of both starters and main courses at a very reasonable price. The food was very good and with attentive but not overly so service. I will be back to this Ocean Road eatery soon.

Take way gone down hill had few times when moved to arra liked the cheap price for the specials but won't be going there anymore quite basic currys seem keen of gone from ok to rubbish

Was here with my Dad back in september was recommended by the land lady of our hotel. Food was great and good value drinks were good and service was excellent. Good choices on the menu best i have seen for a while.

We often visit Ocean Road for a curry and decided to give this Restaurant a try last night for a change. The decor is very pleasant with authentic Indian music playing in the background. The Staff were all very pleasant and attentive and there were quite a few other diners in, despite some of the Restaurants we passed on the way being quite empty. We opted for the £9.95 Special Menu which consisted of a good choice of starter, main, rice or chips and a coffee or ice cream. They also have a £10.95 menu which seemed to have some speciality mains included. We opted for an Onion Bhaji and Chicken tikka starter which we shared between us. The Bhaji was very tasty and there were 5 decent sized pieces of chicken cooked very well and served with salad and quite a large size jug of yoghurt sauce.For Mains I had the Chicken Rogan Josh and my partner had Chicken Madras and we ordered one Mushroom Pilau and one chips, along with an additional Garlic Nan from the Menu.The Rogan Josh came with lots of well cooked chicken and the sauce was bursting with tomato flavour, I would say it is probably the best Rogan Josh I've ever had. My partner said the Madras was delicious too. The Nan was tasty but a bit thicker than I normally like.We both ordered the coffee which was lovely and creamy. We also ordered 2 pints of Cobra and the bill was just under £30 for the two of us.We will defintely be returning after having a lovely meal with great ambience and very good service.

We are regular visitors to the many curry restaurants on Ocean Road in South Shields and having tried most of them Indian Essence is the one we always decide is best.No matter where we go to try we always decide Indian Essence is best.The food is always fresh with a taste and quality you can rely on.The staff are the nicest anywhere. It makes your meal a better experience when the staff are interested in your needs and here they always go out of their way to make your visit a pleasant one.As a regular visitor I have NEVER had any of the staff be unfriendly or unpleasant in any way.If your visiting the curry restaurants in South Shield then Indian Essence should be high on your list.There are bigger , newer , flashy looking restaurants but they are let down by the food not being quite as good.Indian Essence sets the standards and we will continue to be regulars.

The waiter had a terrible attitude throughout our meal - asked to take food away and he scraped the curries into trays in front of us and shoved the chips in a bag with poppadoms in a rude manner. Not sure if he had a bad day but would not go back!! Empty resteraunt on a Saturday should have made us realise

Visited here a couple of weeks ago and was so impressed we reurned last night.Food great and staff excellent. Very friendly atmosphere. We will definitely go here from now on.

I visited here with a group of friends and must admit I am a massive fan of the Spice Garden on Ocean Road so am always reluctant to sometimes go elsewhere. My friend booked this for my friends birthday, the decor is nice, smart and modern and the staff are friendly. We did tell them it was her Birthday however unlike some other restaurants they didn't have anything on the table etc. Overall the menu was the standard normal choices for the evening specials, good price, lovely food, nicely served. Parking as always in Shields isn't always easy but this is expected and as long as your ok walking then this shouldn't be too much of a problem. We took our own cake for our friend and they brought that out for us. Would recommend and return!

We were spending a weekend in South Shields and decided to have a curry on Ocean Road. We had never been in Indian Essence but it looked pleasant and inviting so we decided to give it a try. The service was excellent - prompt but not intrusive. The food was delicious - plenty of choice and some things we hadn't seen before. After ordering we didn't have to wait very long for our food and it was served hot and beautifully presented. All in all we had an excellent experience and hope to visit again.

I ordered take away from here and found a spider or some kind of creepy Crawley in my rice ,not happy as they promised promp delivery of another curry only to recieve an hour later by which time id had something else 4 my tea , would not recommend .

Was not disappointed on my adventure to Indian Essence, the service was fantastic and the food itself was amazing! I would seriously advise to visit this restaurant if you're looking for great food!

Food was bad, went to this place recently and i was served up barely warm chicken tikka for my starter,and the main - chicken rogan josh which was way too oily and again, was borderline cold. Complained but was greeted with blank expression.Cleanliness in general is terrible, sat down and had flies hovering around the table which is a massive put off. Looked about and saw that the floors and walls were scruffy. Will definitely not be going back here!

We booked a table for 3 on a few friends and family recommendations, then I read a few reviews and became a little worried. The food was nice but nothing special, we were very amused to discover that there is in fact a shortage of menus, as a previous reviewer mentioned, we were also given only 2 menus to share between 3 people. However I'm happy to report that we got 3 chocolates when the bill came! Food was ok, although my partner ordered chicken tikka jalfrezi which arrived as chicken jalfrezi (he didn't complain) but we all ordered chicken dishes which although the sauces were nice; the chicken was dry in all dishes.Nice evening overall but wouldn't rush back.

I have been going to Indian Essence restaurant for the past 6 years and it has always pleased me. Me and a few friends tried some new dishes- the king prawn haryali, jalali chicken and Indian Essence delight. It was absolutely fabulous, great additions to their new menu!

We visited this restaurant November 20th for my husbands birthday. What a lovely restaurant, great food great staff and very reasonable prices. We have tried every Indian restaurant in South Shields and we think this is the best. We have been going here for about three years and it's always been excellent. The presentation is as good as the taste.

We're usually pretty open minded with our choice of curry house on ocean rd, there's usually not much in it, but this was entirwly disappointing. As a party of five we were given only two menus despite the restaurant being fairly empty, which made things difficult, one of the menus was dropped on my head by the waiter. They had run out of the house wine at 7:30. The meal itself was fine as was the majority of the service, however tradition was neglected when we were given only two chocolate thins between five people, were we supposed to bitw them in half? All in all not great considering the fierce door-to door competition on ocean rd.

me and my partner always dine out at indian essence, wow what a spectacular curry and service you recieve here. we always order chicken madras, pilau rice and chips, and my god amazing isnt the word, always fresh and piping hot and the spices just melt in your mouth. whenever we dine out its here and whenever we order for takeway we come here to, we always collect our curries as i just find them fresher that way, staff know us now which makes it even better when being welcomed. 10/10 indian restraunt, probably the best on ocean road and ive tried a few.

On my last review I said the takeaway wasn't up to much sometimes... The last few have been outstanding! Must be reading reviews! We had chicken rogan and the kids had massalla... But where divine but the rogan was better than I ever remembered it, fresh delicious flavours! Love this place.

Lovely food never had a bad meal, not the friendliest staff but always polite, Sweet of the day that comes with the more exsensive deals is always ice cream :-( asked about this as the cheap advitses ice cream and told its always just ice cream (confused why the menu says sweet of the day)

My family and I always come to this place. First reason is the reasonable price when you order in their deal menu. They also have many choices for the food. Staffs are friendly.They have clean toilet .

One of the very best around, takeaway isn't always up to the same standard as sitting in, but where is these days? We have been going to Indian essence for years, often try other places but always end up going back. The food is delicious, the service is outstanding... Most of all the make a fuss of the children, a nice, kind caring touch that goes a very long way! Children love treats out and they love this Indian restaurant too! I've never have a bad meal and try all different dishes, it's definitely worth a visit, I recommend it to everyone!

Ordered meal got half eaten pompodoms delivered. Rang up to query and got a lot of attitude off the manager and got told not to call back again. Also had sit down meal there in the past and service wasn't good. Wouldn't go back anyway there are plenty more Indian restaurants that would appreciate our business.

we go to indian essence every couple weeks, i think we have tried every thing on the menu, over the last 3 years ,and iv not had a bad meal yet, staff are always polite.and very friendly.we have had family birthdays which all have always enjoyed ,you have to go and see for yourself,

We went to Indian Essence for a dinner with 2 friends who haven't been to the restaurant before - we had one of the best evenings in a long time! The food was fantastic, the staff friendly and attentive and the atmosphere lively. We live in the neighborhood and wanted to introduce the restaurant to our friends who are from London - they'll definitely come back.

We returned to the Indian Essence on Sunday, it was very quiet following the Xmas and New Year celebrations. We were greeted in the usual friendly, and polite manner we have become accustomed to at this restaurant. We were served with drinks and poppadoms promptly and sat back to enjoy a pleasing dining experience. We were not disappointed, my wife had the fish pakora starter, which because of its nature had to be freshly prepared, it was delightful. The main courses too were excellent. Though I did leave some of the chopped green chilis on the side of my plate, because I find that the flavour still permeates the dish. Overall a very pleasant dining experience at a nice price.

Waited 1 hour n 30 mins for this #@$# foid. When it arrived things where missing from the order rang them back and where called liars dont waste your money.

One of the worst takeaway meals I've ever eaten! The curry was like water and the tikka had grizzle in it. Awful.

Excellent as always. Visited here to celebrate a birthday. The service is always good as was this time. The food is great and very good value for money. Chicken naga is my favourite as it is very spicy but packed with a unique taste from the naga chili, not often you get spice and taste together. The special menus available offer great savings which makes it cheaper to eat here than get a takeaway. Drinks prices are average. Restaurant decor is modern featuring neon lights giving the place feel clean and fresh. Also there is usually a lit up water feature near the back but hasn't been working the past few times i've visited. This was not my first visit here and will not be the last. Loved it!

Night spoilt by over keen waiters who served food as soon as you finished one course and was timed to 5 secs to collect plate off table once knife and fork had been laid down . Food average be sticking to the star in future

Been to this place a couple of times and both times the food was spot on and service was brilliant. However, I decide to take my work collegues along for a night out. Ok, there was 12 of us but making us wait 1 hour 20 mins before getting our started and not even offering any explanation, complimentary drink or even an apology I though was a little wrong. Eventually the starter came and don't get me wrong it was really nice. After waiting another hour after finishing our starters our main still hadn't arrived. I wouldn't care but we were the only party in the restaurant. So, after being there over 2 hours and hadn't received our main I decided to ask them for our bill of what we had ate. They tried to charge us for the currys we still hadn't received and when I refuse to pay and offered the money for our starters and drinks the manager got very vocal and decided to phone the police and lock us in!!! More fool him, the police came and sorted it all out, we only ended up payin for what we had, but still. After that experience I will never go back. What a shame, food was half decent aswell.

I absolutely adore this restaurant. Everything was perfect, from the prawn cocktail starter to the garlic naan breads. I mean it when I say they must have been made in heaven! Just go here. Don't bother trying any other restaurant on Ocean Road. This is the best, hands down.

Ok lets start by saying from being in my dippers I have visited thousands of Indian cuisine's not only in my home town South Shields, but across the world. Anyone with the knowledge of South Shields would know Ocean Road has many Indian cuisines down one road, however none stand out more than the Indian Essence. I have been going there for the past 6 years, and can honestly say no where else comes close! I have tried every single restaurant on Ocean Road and have tried many places outside the region, and abroad. The service, value and most importantly quality of the food is to die for, its simply unbeatable! To put the whole thing into context I have recently moved and still drive over 30 miles, for what I would describe as the best Indian food in the world. If you haven't tried it, you should! and if you don't then you're the one missing out!

We haven't bothered going back to any others since we started going to Indian Essence not long after it opened. Consistently fantastic food and first class service. Tons of choice on the menu at a very reasonable price. The staff are amazing, very friendly but professional at all times. Just go!
