Something has gone badly wrong at St Petroc’s. We were in Padstow in April 2023 and booked twice at the Bistro because the food and service was the same quality as The Seafood Restaurant but we preferred the less formal atmosphere. So when we chose Padstow to celebrate 4 family birthdays, we booked the Bistro as soon as we’d booked our accommodation and emailed to say why we’d booked and how much we were looking forward to it. What a massive disappointment. The menu bore no resemblance to what we’d had before - coley?? - it used to be pet food. Burgers???? I don’t think I’ll ever forget the limp pile of dry leaves that had been plonked straight out of a bag beside the sea bream that I’d ordered. Sea bream with a strong whiff of ammonia. Sides not correct and late. Massively overpriced for what it now is. Service was not good. Staff are friendly but they were always friendly. It’s just that before they were good at their jobs too. Little things like the very faded bottles of Jill Stein hand wash and cream in the Ladies only add to the sense that this is a business on the slide. But I guess whoever is now in charge doesn’t bother to read these comments as the decline is being well documented here - yet nothing is changing. Perhaps you think the name will always bring new customers and the disappointed ones don’t matter. But they do.

The food was good. The service was a bit scratchy. We visited on a Monday night and the restaurant wasn't full. We waited 50 minutes for our starters. We arrived at 730pm and left at 9:45. When we left we had to ask to pay on our way out as the tables were being set around us and no option offered of tea or cofffee. Overall it was ok, but service was slow and food good, albeit slow to arrive. Perhaps just Monday night-itis after a busy weekend? When we left we felt a bit like we'd overstayed our welcome despite having paid over £300. I suspect there are better options locally that may be a bit more enthusiastic,

St Petrocs is the best restaurant in Padstow according to my two teenagers who love the steak. We are down for half term and have been twice already. Daisy has served us on both evening’s and her smile and energy is infectious . What an absolutely lovely girl. Thank you for being a brilliant waitress and being such fun. The entire team are fabulous and helpful it has to be said. We love St Petrocs and its much better with your joy. We live across the road so hope to see you all again.

Lovely meal -The clam starter was delicious. Local Megrim sole served with red pepper sauce equally as good. We also tried the bream and were not disappointed, good portions. First time at St Petroc's after visiting the seafood restaurant a few times. Will try again.

This was a bit of a shame, food was great - no issues there. Exactly as expected. Issue came with the incredibly slow service, once we ordered it was fine but it took a while to order mains and 25 minutes for someone to come for pudding. We were happy chatting but that was ridiculous. Same issue with the bill, just SO slow.

Our party of four really enjoyed our lunch at St Petroc’s Bistro a few days ago. The food was amazing and the friendly service we received from our waitress Daisy, made it even more memorable. We wish her all the best on her travels to work at other Rick Stein restaurants in Australia next year. So nice he gives his employees opportunities to do that.

We booked meal and the service was dreadful appetiser had a part missing from it starters took 45 minutes to come food was good when we eventually got it, they were bringing our main course to another table just no organisation needs a manager to oversee the running of everything. We had booked this for our 40th wedding anniversary and had travelled over from Ireland and we were so disappointed. We left before even having dessert as we had the menus for 20 minutes and nobody came to take the order

The food was good enough. One of our party found a caterpillar in her £6.50 serving of boiled kale. The waitress found it funny and that was that. On the way out I overheard a member of staff giving another party of guests a mini lecture on how the establishment thrives because of its attention to detail in customer service. I wonder what Rick Stein thinks about caterpillars. Probably too busy counting his money.

We went to St Petroc’s on impulse after a Gin creating session at Tarquins. It was 2pm but we were graciously seated and the service was good. We knew there was a “lunch deal” and we both had steak frites. We were confident of the quality as Warrens is an amazing butchers. The steaks were as good as expected and cooked as requested. They aren’t huge but (a) we didn’t want anything huge and (b) what do you expect for a bargain £15.95? The wine is fairly expensive as you’d expect but good quality. We shared a very nice Bakewell Tart for a tenner. All in all a good deal and good quality.

This is a wonderful bistro in a lovely location in Padstow. A table here was suggested to me by staff at Rick Stein when I couldn't get a table for late lunch. St Petroc was perfect for my needs. I sat outside in the fresh air and enjoyed a cocktail , zucchini, and pastry tart. All delicious and beautifully presented. I felt very well looked after by the staff. They were very kind and attentive, and I wish them well in their future travels and adventures.

Was reassured that wait staff asked about allergies as I have a severe milk intolerance. I asked about side choice that would be dairy free, and only choice was chips. Which was disappointing. My starter of salmon was lovely. My dessert choice was the usual sorbet. I suppose I should have kept my expectations at the low level as every other meal I have eaten out. At least I wasn't given anything with milk in. Which has happened in other restaurants. Loved the art btw

There is a lot of expectation when you attach the Rick Stein label to something. We booked a dinner reservation well in advance. All good. Don’t expect to be able to rock up and get a table. Quality of ingredients is good. However there were a few things that let our experience down. A little knit picky, but my red wine was served in a white wine glass. That does annoy me. Our food was good. But, I had to chase for the chips. We ordered some wine, but then someone came back to say they had forgotten what the order was. Overall, not bad. But, like I say, we had expected something much better. Lacks finesse.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal- gin and tonic in the comfy lounge while we chose from the menu, I had lamb sweetbread to start, husband had scotch egg, both delicious. We both had catch of the day- sea bream. Simple, lovely sauce, buttered potatoes included and we added tasty hibiscus cabbage to share. All amazing and washed down with carafe of white wine. Both had sticky toffee pudding to finish- excellent smiley service throughout. Not cheap, but definitely cheaper than seafood restaurant and in a beautiful building. A real treat.

The review for St Petroc’s Café suggests a cozy ambiance and friendly staff. It's unfortunate that the bread was served late, but positively, it wasn't charged. The food quality sounds good, with perfectly grilled tuna and fennel as a side, which might not be to everyone's taste, especially with the excessive pepper. In this price range, one might expect a few more highlights.

My husband booked us a table during our 2 night stay in Padstow as a treat. The staff were very friendly, and the restaurant very cosy and comfortable. Our starter of Mussels and the tomato and red pepper soup were very nice. My carafe of Rioja wine was also very nice. My husband decided on filet steak cooked medium and I decided on the lamb Boulangerè with red cabbage. My husband’s streak was over cooked and lacked flavour and my lamb whilst very tender the red cabbage lacked any acidity and flavour which was a shame as it should have cut through the lamb ( I have a lovely recipe for spiced red cabbage which would have been so delicious with this lamb) the staff did offer to replace my husbands steak but that would have meant I would have eaten on my own. In all fairness he was offered a complimentary dessert, he chose sticky toffee pudding which was decadent. After looking forward to this meal we left feeling very underwhelmed. Would we return? I would say not sadly.

Let me start by saying the food was excellent- beautifully cooked, well seasoned and delicious. The dining room is lovely and we had a great table. However it was the chaotic and rather offhand approach to customer service that really let St Petrocs down, despite being less than half full. We waited nearly 25 minutes for two glasses of Cremant. After waiting 15 minutes for our drinks I had to go and find a waitress only to be told that they didn’t have any Cremant and a member of staff had run down to the Seafood Restaurant to get a bottle. When she finally returned she said she’d been told that they only had two bottles and needed them…. By now we had been waiting nearly 25 minutes for a drink. She then tried to sell us two glasses of the more expensive champagne, instead of doing what I think would have been appropriate given the wait and the chaos - offering us two glasses for the same price as the Cremant… On arrival of the steaks, my friend requested French mustard, ten minutes later and half way through his meal he asked again. Two dishes of English mustard appeared with the comment ‘we don’t have any French mustard’ What kitchen does it carry that?! Waiting to pay was painful and eventually one of our party ventured to the kitchen with the bill. Asking to pay the bill elicited the question “what do you want? The bill or to pay it?” Bonkers! All in all, shambolic, amateur and far less than we were expecting

We've had several truly wonderful meals at Stein restaurants over recent years, sadly this wasn't our experience at St Petroc's - a dinner date for 2. A half empty restaurant, a 30 minute wait for starters, then a 40 minute wait for main courses - one of which we didn't pay for due to the quality of the meal served. We finished up eating alone whilst staff laid the tables for breakfast and swept the restaurant floor. We did call to provide direct feedback instead of leaving it here, but our call wasn't returned :(

We only visited Padstow to sample a bit of the Stein empire. This is the only dog friendly restaurant that is available currently as a Stein & requires dining in a separate downstairs area. We didn't care! We were open minded about the food as the reviews vary & a lot of criticism relates to the prices. Have to say we all thoroughly enjoyed our meal and I felt the prices were representative of the product and quality. The lemon sole was large & the tuna above average in size. All cooked perfectly. The desserts were sublime too. Only criticism is the lack of bread. It would have been nice to have some 'mopping up' for the mussels! Indeed why bother setting the table with side plates at all? Lovely unintrusive service on a busy Saturday night. We'll probably never get to visit again but recommend if you get chance you go!!!

We were staying overnight at the beautiful Seafood Restaurant, and thought we would try St Petroc's Bistro to gain a little more of the 'Stein' experience. The restaurant decor was very simple. There weren't many other diners that evening and therefore it was a bit echoey. The receptionist and waiting staff were professional and friendly. The BIG disappointment was the menu. It was uninspiring and lacking in imagination and choice; also very expensive for what we had. My husband ordered the Sea Bass Fillets with a beurre blanc sauce & frites. Vegetables are extra! It arrived with no garnish or panache and looked very unappetising. I had the Chargrilled Tuna Steak served pink. It looked beautiful but It was over cooked and fairly dry. The worst was, everything was sooooo salty! We did mention this to the waitress and she informed us the feedback would be given to the chef. Nothing else was said, we paid and left feeling disappointed and underwhelmed.

The ambience was lovely and friendly, not stuffy or austere in any way. The staff were very efficient and nothing was too much trouble. There was nothing we could fault, and contrary to a previous reviewer we really enjoyed the turbot with bonemarrow, in fact 3 of us had this dish and loved it, so suspect it was a poor choice on the previous review. The crab linguine was to die for, the vegetables perfectly cooked and presentation amazing. Well done to all concerned, we would not hesitate to go back. Could also highly recommend Rick's champagne as opposed to the branded offerings, so much so we enjoyed 2 bottles!

We had a fantastic meal from the olives and sour dough appetiser, the kidneys and celeriac soup starter, two steaks which absolutely melted and rather greedily the cheeseboard, not to mention the smooth bottle of Bordeaux. I had the Turbot with bone marrow gravy, which sounds ridiculous and it was but not in a good way. The meaty gravy basically ruined the lovely fish. I should have known. In my defence the waiter said other customers complimented the dish. The waiter was a vegetarian, not sure why restaurants employ people who can't eat their food. The wine recommendation was a dry white, but the gravy was so strong a light pinot noir would have been better. My desert was a walnut tart which was very dry despite the best efforts of the creme fresche. My wife's food choices fared better than mine and the restaurant ambiance was pleasant, however I won't be rushing back.

I loved everything about this little jewel of a place and what is more my 15 year old grandson did too. His hulloumi starter, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with poppy seeds and rib-eye steak with amazing chips (crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside) got a vote of approval, never easy with a difficult teenager to please. I have to say they were the finest chips I have ever tasted. Being interested in old buildings, I couldn't resist walking through other rooms in this bistro/hotel. Visited on the first night of a two night stay at the seafood restaurant. It was brightly lit in the restaurant and not very atmospheric. The waiter was friendly but we felt rather rushed. Hardly put down our forks from the starter and the main arrived. One of our party said later they actually brought the mains before we had finished so had been kept warm. I had scallops to start with which were tasty. Followed by turbot which was nice but could have been hotter. We were presented with a bottle of water for the table (costly) when we would have opted for tap water. Our deal was for three course plus one side. The waiter offered to put the water through as one ‘side’. This was not done. We also ordered 2 hispi cabbage but only 1 arrived. I I had already paid for this meal in early 2020 I think I would have been annoyed to pay the cost - rather overpriced and rushed.

I write this in the genuine hope that prospective diners with dog in tow are pre-warned: We’re staying in “The Seafood Restaurant” accommodation. A lovely room if a little in the back of beyond; come stay and be sure to leave a trail of bread crumbs when you first venture outside. The accommodations are extensive; weaving all points of the compass in a dizzying series of twists and turns, up and down dim lit passages, past myriad framed pics of supposed fisher friends of Rick who probably never set foot in the place and likely only ever traded fish and not friendship? Anyway, getting to the point, if you take your dog to the St. Petroc Bistro expect to be seated well away from the main dining area and in a small back room facing the area that drinks are prepared, servers rushing back and forth with over laden trays of beverages. Immediately we sat down my partner mumbled “steerage”. Great food, terrible ambience. Cup half full and all that - after staring at the multitude of bottles and cans for near on 2.5 hours, I can honestly say, the bistro has a drink for all occasions and they pour a generous glass of wine for those that don’t go for a bottle.

Personally, I had steak that was over seasoned to the point of being inedible in taste and texture. I can only conclude that Rick Stein doesn’t use this project to enhance his reputation. It must therefore be using celebrity to rip off the unsuspecting, gullible public. Don’t waste your money.

My husband thought he would give me a special birthday treat as I have always wanted to visit one of Rick Stein’s restaurants. We visited with my son and grandson. The waiting staff were polite, prompt and welcoming. Our food and drinks were delivered promptly . The starter of prawns for me was just ok, my husband had the crab linguine which was nice but lacked a bit of seasoning , my son’s smoked salmon was ok. 3 of us had the Hake and one had the steak. The steak was good, the Hake was average, nothing special so I was disappointed. There rest of the fish dinners on the menu ranged from £34 upward and I was glad that we did not spend that kind of money on food that was underwhelming.

Although our second choice (seafood restaurant was always fully booked despite empty tables constantly visible) we decided to book St Petroc’s Bistro. The service was fantastic throughout with the waitresses really working hard to ensure that all customers were served equally and when required. The food was very high quality and tasteful on my part. I had the crab linguinie and pan fried hake - both highly recommended and full of flavour. My partner had the pate which she said was lovely and the plaice which she however found over the top dripping in butter and too overpowering in butter taste by the end so had to leave some. The drinks were fantastic with a good selection of both local and further afield options. The attentiveness of the waitresses throughout was very good with them having great interactions with nearby young families and involving the children in conversation - sometimes these places can be too formal and put off families but this wasn’t the case - everyone was made to feel very welcome here.

Blew us away.. Again! 2nd visit and did not disappoint. We took our dog and ate at a table in the bar. Service still attentive but discreet. Every single moral was perfection. We will sooo be back. Love the choice, nothing too much trouble, varying menu through seasons, relaxed ambience and every type of fish cooked to absolute perfection. Really enjoyed our wine and our dofg received loads of attention from hostess and waitresses. We sneeked him a little bread and butter and the odd frie... Even he liked his lips in approval. Bring on 2021, we will be back.

Ordered the seafood ragout. Was advertised as having mussels, cockles, class, crab and prawns. Only had mussels and cockles. Would have said something to the waitress but as they didn't come back and ask how the food was, didn't get the chance. Atmosphere was good, food was disappointing and when we did finally get to speak to the waitress to say it wasn't what was advertised. She looked about as interested as one of the cockles in the dish. Wouldn't bother going here again

For the last night of our holiday we decided to come to Rick Stein's bistro...what a terrible mistake. We arrived on time, our table wasn't ready. Leaving us time to read the health and safety info which stated all staff would be wearing masks, we followed the lead and kept our on. Our waitress, clearly hadn't spent time waiting in reception and wasn't wearing a mask (nor an exemption lanyard). Starter arrived before drinks, bread arrived after starter, raw prawns in starter, shell not properly removed from prawns, Turbot served with unseasoned and dull overcooked new potatoes, slow service etc.

Visiting Padstow for second time this year we went for lunch with friends, and what a lovely time we all had. The food was very good and our waitress Petra was excellent, she was jolly to meet and interact with. Looking forward to our next visit to the area.

We arrived 5 minutes early for our booking into a restaurant about one third full. We then waited for 30 minutes to have our food order taken while in the meantime 3 tables who came in after us had their orders taken! We decided to walk out and fortunately managed to get a table at Burger and Fish around the corner which was excellent.

We visited St. Petroc's for dinner over the weekend and absolutely loved it. Our waitress was Petra, and she was just super attentive, friendly, and great at recommending/explaining the menu. The food was delicious and we were left feeling really happy with our choice of dining there. We will be coming back next time we visit Padstow!

The food (though a little overpriced) and service were very good. The place felt a bit draughty, though it could have been because it was a particularly wet and windy evening.

There were elements of the Bistro that now make it look rather tired and slightly disappointed with the menu choices. Would have like to see a Fish Curry offered- as Rick Stein’s cafe was closed at it was their signature dish. Standard of food good and pleasant staff.

Wonderful service and food with some very happy memories. We won’t be the only golf society to be tolerated after rain washed out the day’s play but Amy,our amazing host, did a fabulous job. The food we ate, the laughs we had. What a great evening . Oh and we drank rather a lot too!

Great service, great food, had the lobster and fries, enjoyed the challenge of dressing it as well, with no worries in a relaxed atmosphere. Premium price, but worth it.

I went to Steins top restaurant 10 years ago and vowed never to give him any more money.But…….we went with friends because they wanted to.Very average, steak ok but the price is ridiculous. £3 extra for a sauce. So £35 for a ribeye, 15 chips and some rocket.I’ve CV learnt my lesson!Went to Ivy House the same well and had same for half the price, and presented better.

Was especially looking forward to trying here, staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I did however expect a little more minor touches. There was still bits of the last persons food on our table, felt like any other restaurant with basic wooden tables. Nice table cloth etc would have been better. What we initially wanted was only on the sample menu but we still had the lobster and the waitress came over to explain how to get all the meat out. I couldn’t do it all so wasted lots of it unfortunately. Maybe you could do some chunky homemade chips to add to the menu as I find them better than the fries. I think it’s a bit overpriced for what it is but we wanted to try it regardless

We’ve just had a 2 night stay and had a wonderful time. All the staff couldn’t do enough for you. Our room ‘The Attic’ was small but really cosy, comfy bed and had everything you need. I like the touch of the radio being on as you checked into your room added a nice atmosphere. Breakfast was also delicious. We dined in the Seafood Restaurant both nights which we really enjoyed. Would definitely stay again. We did the celebration package which included a meal the first night and a sharing platter and champagne which we had the second day - delicious. Keep up the great work team Stein.

Tried this as couldn't get into the Seafood Restaurant for the day I wanted. Not disappointed.Eat in 'secret garden' at the back. Service was excellent, menu and wine list offered interesting options, and each of our three courses were very good. If you find the main Seafood Restaurant booked up, then this is an excellent alternative from the same Stein stable.

Faultless delicious food and wine. I had tried to book the restaurant before we travelled down but the website said there was no availability however, if you call the reservations line they will fit you in if they can. I was so glad I tried. The food was unbelievable the wine was great too. There was a lovely atmosphere and the staff are really nice.I would recommend the scallops to start they were the best I have ever tasted. The hake and turbot were unbelievable but the star was the hispi cabbage. I didn’t know cabbage could taste thy delicious!

Dined here with friends as part of what seems to be continuous birthday celebrations. Always wanted to visit one of Rick Stein’s establishments, the Seafood Restaurant was fully booked for the dates we wanted so this seemed to be the next best option and none of us were disappointed at all. We booked 6 months in advance too! Menu is excellent as expected as was the food and wine. Not as expensive as I thought it would be although none of us went for the Turbot or Lobster.

An exceptional meal, beautifully cooked. The oysters as an appetiser were sublime, and the panna cotta with pistachio cream made me smile with every bite. We had a gorgeous white burgundy to accompany the meal and the staff were friendly and relaxed. A lovely lunch and worth the extremely high prices!

Bedrooms are wonderfully decorated and a credit to Jill Stein. We had a very spacious room, with a sofa and dining room that was well received. The only gripe I had with the room, was the noise of the bottles being slung into the bottle bin all evening, but it did stop at about 1130pm. Nevertheless, it did detract from the lovely venue. Service was hopeless for breakfast and dinner - think it would be better if we had one member of staff to look after us then perhaps things wouldn’t have been missed. We didn’t make a fuss when we know how short staffed the hospitality industry is at the moment, but they may wish to look at reviewing the offer so that less pressure is put on the staff. We still had a great time though and will definitely be returning

We have been here a lot over the past twenty years. When we arrived tonight we were not in the main restaurant but on a table in a passageway. When we asked if we could move.we were told.it was not possible and that we should have requested we wanted the restaurant when we booked. There was no where to do this on the website. There was no apology or attempt to make it up with even a complimentary drink. Delicious food good waitresses but poor front of house service. Sadly I don't think we will come here again.

We've spent many years holidaying in St Ives , and eaten in most of the restaurants, this place is now one of our favourites. It can be a bit tricky being gluten free and vegan ...and husband not , to find somewhere that both of us are happy to eat at ! Here fits the bill perfectly. Lots of tasty , fresh dishes to choose from , and incredibly friendly staff. Highly recommend. X

Very nice up market hotel a converted grandhouse. Beautiful. architecture interiors designed to match. It was a very comfortable stay, well appointed room. Lots of parking, does have that "no lift" issue, be aware the upper floors could be a problem. The restaurant was solid, but pretty limited menu. Standard breakfast included, cooked to order. Solid local option.Wi fi secure.

First time we have been here for Sunday Roast. Was a bit dubious. But, I was proved completely wrong. Had the poussin, gorgeous, so were triple cooked toasties, cauliflower and broccoli cheese, glazed carrots, I could go on. Now waiting for creme Brule. Oh, the Juggling Jem cocktail was scrumptious as well. Brilliant atmosphere as well. Well done guys!
