We were in Arundel for a long weekend & saw this pub/restaurant from the Cathedral grounds. Looked nice , so we thought we would give it a go that evening. Really friendly guys were running the bar/restaurant and we were surprised that it wasn’t busier - guess it is perhaps too far a walk for some people, not for us. Meals were very tasty, and service very good from the guys. Thoroughly enjoyable evening, yes it was quiet, but sometimes that is just what you want - thoroughly recommended.

Popped in whilst visiting the area. We had a friendly welcome from lady behind the bar. There were several specials on the blackboard. I opted for soup of the day , spiced parsnip. My husband had fish goujon ciabatta and chips. My soup was delicious and served with two pieces of proper bread (apparently home made), and butter. My husband really enjoyed his fish as well. Lovely decor and ambience. Fine selection of beer and a lovely cider called “Old Alice”. Would return if ever back in Arundel.

Food very tasty Staff friendly and helpful Only disappointment was the lack of atmosphere in the restaurant. No music and decor very bare, uncosy. When i asked , was told speakers in restaurant weren't working. Could here a tv in the back kitchen/staff room.

What a lovely pub situated up on the hill by Arundel Cathedral. Beautifully furnished inside and with a very comfortable patio garden at the rear. Roast beef sirloin and red onion sauce sandwich, topped off with horse radish. Yum yum. Friendly and engaging staff.

My husband and I stayed here for a couple of nights during a short break away. Situated by the Cathedral outside the main bustle of the town, it was a perfect location. A 5 minute walk down hill and you are in the main shopping/restaurant area, for those wanting to roam a little further. Rooms were clean and staff friendly. On site parking was available too. Breakfast was a limited menu but of good quality, so very enjoyable.

Away from the hustle of the town and castle but perfect for the cathedral this oasis of calm with little courtyard was perfect. We had lunch from the sandwich menu and have to say it was the best roast beef sandwich I have ever had, slightly pink, marbled with fat and so tender and tasty, the focaccia bread was crunchy and chips crispy. The staff were friendly and helpful. Well worth the walk up the hill.

What a wonderful experience! The staff made our Sunday roast, in my opinion. Nothing was too much trouble. There was a group of 7 including 4 dogs! Food was delicious and tasted homemade. Plenty of it too, which is a bonus. If you’re after a traditional English pub, in a beautiful location, look no further. We loved it.

This particular Sunday was my first during my recent trip to England. After spending some time in the nearby St. Nicholas church and the even closer cathedral, what better way to round off my brief visit to Arundel that a Sunday Roast. My roast beef dinner was superb, with the beef cooked to perfection. Their horseradish was perfect, with just the right amount of tang. I asked for and received another serving of horseradish. Very few meals beat a roast beef dinner with horseradish. The staff were very welcoming upon my arrival, as were the locals. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff.

Stumbled across the pub whilst exploring the town. Shame we hadn’t found it earlier, as we most certainly would have had our lunch there. The staff were very friendly and made my wife, son and I very welcome. They were also friendly to our two dachshunds. The courtyard was very nice and it was a pleasant break from the other busy areas of the town. We are already looking forward to our next visit to Arundel and will most certainly be visiting St Mary’s Gate Inn again.

We arrived in Arundel for a weekend stay. Having enjoyed the other pubs and restaurants we tried we were looking forward to St Mary’s Gate. From the outside it looks nice and traditional and fairly well kept. Every promise of a cosy traditional pub. How wrong we were!! As soon as we walked in it was really quiet. Considering every other place in the town was busy and buzzy this was our first hint. The only small group of youngsters had 2 tables of 4 littered with empty glasses, tobacco and general rubbish. Swearing loudly and seemed to be local. The staff were certainly not phased by them or the fact it’s not particularly inviting. Far from the traditional nook we’d hoped for it was more like a cheap version of a Wetherspoons. Very dark with fluorescent cheap looking spirits. Loud music and neglectful staff. The girls working were very interested in the group but little else. We waited some time to be served and when we were felt as though we were interrupting. Needless to say we didn’t linger and certainly wouldn’t return. Shame as it’s the 1 place we didn’t enjoy. Other than the church & cathedral really don’t bother going out of the centre.

The hotel/ pub was in a great location, with parking available and nice friendly staff. The issue was predominantly with the room which needed some attention and improvement. The bathroom had rusted goods, missing sealant, dirty grouting and the shower pressure was really poor. The “TV” was a small computer monitor which was hard to watch due to the layout of bed and room. Room would also benefit from a bit more dusty and windows cleaned. Breakfast nice, although a little bigger portion would be good.

Thanks to Sam and her team for a very welcoming and wonderful stay at the St Mary’s Gate Inn. The accommodation was clean and comfortable and came with safe off-road parking. The location was just a short stroll into the town centre and was perfect from which to visit the lovely town of Arundel, its shops, castle and cathedral. The pub had a friendly atmosphere and offered a great range of Hall & Woodhouse beers, kept to perfection. The food, at breakfast and throughout the day, was locally-sourced, home cooked and of the highest standard. The service was superb; nothing was too much trouble for the outstanding staff. Enjoyed our meal in this traditional pub which has a basket of board games too! The food is good - traditional like a choice of burgers, fish and chips, scampi, pies ( there was a gluten free pie available) and special board. Starter we had salt and pepper squid which was good. Dessert board too. All presented well - liked the chip basket with the burgers. Friendly staff.

Myself and my partner visited on Sunday 19/1/2020 Having been before, and been very satisfied. But alas this time our experience was so different. Firstly it was so cold in there, a frosty night so we were looking forward to going out into a nice warm pub. The radiators were cold, the open fires were not lit. So it made it very uncomfortable with the cold. My starter was prawn cocktail, not what I expected prawns were like they had just come out of the freezer very watery no sauce of any kind on them.My main which was Lasagne was not the best very tomatoey which is all you could taste, and the garlic bread was just two pieces of the frozen slices you heat up. So we were both very disappointed. The cold was a real problem when you have to sit with your coat on to eat. So I’m afraid we will not be visiting again.

Inn is next to the cathedral with private parking which was a must for us. The pub is very nice run by staff with a sense of humour when you read all the little quotes on blackboards both inside and out! Our room was one of those which is accessed from the rear car park and backs on to the pub gardens (I was worried about noise but needed be because the pub closes at a reasonable time so we were not bothered by anything). The room had everything you need - very nice comfortable bed, bedside cupboards, lamps, WiFi, tv, wardrobe, tea & coffee making stuff, complimentary toiletries, Pub had great food selection here although we didn’t eat (apart from breakfast) as we had a reservation elsewhere but we drank there.Breakfast was plentiful and very nicely cooked, staff very friendly no complaints.Only slight issue was the hose in the shower - we couldn’t move the shower head to a better position otherwise it fell off and we couldn’t adjust its temperature either. But we’re not overly fussy so just made the best of it.I’d definitely use this place again

Being barked at to order our desserts at the bar and the audible tut when we asked for more drinks was almost laughable. We later discovered they were short staffed and the chef was apparently stressed! Even with the 'mitigating circumstances' the customer service was dire and unprofessional and bordered on rudeness The food was at best mediocre. I made my feelings known to the staff when we checked out. I used tge word "scuzzy" to describe our room. We were in room 7. Stairs up to room were disgusting. It hasn't seen a vaccuum in months by the look of it. The room was large but tge devor was tatty beyond belief. The border around the room was falling off the wall all around the place. It was poorly cleaned. The towel rail had fallen off but the pegs remained sticking out of the wall. The 4 post bed brackets were not screwed in on 1 post. The leg fell off the chair and the shelf in the cupboard was on the floor of tge cupboard itself. Had we had more time when we arrived we would have left. The breakfast was nice and staff friendly but the room itself wasn't worth £20 let alone the £90 i had to pay in advance. We definitely won't be back!! They never answered the phone the morning we tried ringing them to clarify check in time. That was a good clue as to what this place was all about!

Vi bodde bare 200 meter unna, så vi tuslet innom for middag en kveld. Veldig bra mat, langt bedre enn man forventer fra en pub.

I organised an evening walk around Arundel followed by supper for 26 walkers in the St Mary's Gate. Very happy with the friendly and efficient service, nice choice of meals and delicious ice creams . Even a biscuit for the dog. Well done.

Прогуливаясь по городу увидели этот паб, зашли посмотреть и обстановка очень понравилась. Обед замечательный, персонал просто очень приветливый. Все чисто, очень уютно и нормальная цена.

I had dinner here with my wife an daughter as we were camping nearby in Slindon. The pub has parking I should start with as in Arundel you can't find a car parking space anywhere except right down by the castle (which is where we parked by the way and then walked miles!). Anyway the staff were friendly! The food was good and reasonably priced and the beer was excellent ;). The pic is of the inside and it was very quiet for a Saturday night but the landlord said it was unusual and actually quite nice after the very busy lunch where they were packed with drinkers for the wedding in the cathedral opposite! I should add that dogs are allowed in this pub so that's why we chose it! We all enjoyed our meals so if you are in the area then you won't be disappointed.

Let's be clear: I've given this four stars because the beer was excellent - decent ale, properly kept. The food was good pub food and reasonably priced. It also gets four stars for having two lovely dogs! Nice location too. Recommended!

On a day visit to Arundel we called into St. Mary's Gate Inn for lunch. The staff were friendly and the food was very good. Being a dog lover, I enjoyed the dogs wandering about. It does say outside that dogs and well behaved owners are welcome. Will definitely visit again on our next trip to Arundel.

I was meeting an extremely old friend (to clarify someone I have known for a long time), by sheer coincidence we both arrived at the same time and were greeted by Nevin and Kirsty, lovely welcome. Keys to rooms quickly issued and after a short pit stop the bar beckoned. For me the highlight of this lovely pub is the welcome you receive, I felt right at home, the locals are a lovely bunch of people. Not to mention the excellent beer and good quality pub food.As the night continued, food arrived, good value, nicely presented and well served. The 'old friend' had the lasagne - which disappeared very fast (normally a good sign), I had the chicken balti which was tasty and much appreciated on a chilly night. We passed on the desert for more beer/wine.Time was forgotten, we were both surprised when the end of the evening arrived, a Talisker (not had for a long time) was gratefully drunk. Thank you Kirsty for looking after us so beautifully! The room was clean, tidy (bathroom spotless), and the bed was comfortable. It being a cold night I was grateful for the extra blanket.Breakfast was magnificent, a huge full English was well cooked, coffee was plentiful, as was toast and juice. All in all a good stay, if you are after a decent pub with a warm welcome in the beautiful city (I think) of Arundel, then I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Thank you to all those that looked after us!

The good and the bad about St Mary’s gate We arrived early Friday afternoon where we were greeted by a lovely gentleman from behind the bar who quickly booked us in and showed us to our room. We had a family room which was lovely and warm and most important very clean and lots of boiling hot water. We later went for lunch which was excellent, good size portions and served very hot very enjoyable needed a good walk after it. The following day we went for our breakfast where we were greeted by a lovely lady with a big smile on her face and so welcoming she obviously loves her job she was like a breath of fresh air. The breakfast was first class plenty of choice also served very hot yet another walk needed after it We last stayed in Arundel at St Marys gate over 3 years ago Nevin the landlady even remembered us from then and had a nice chat with her As a dog owner you are made to feel at ease straight away when we visit Arundel again this will always be our first choice to stay The bad points Quite simply there aren’t any

Popped in here for a hot drink on a walking explore of Arundel. The bar staff were superb but there were 2 black labradors who had the run of the place. The dogs were constantly sniffing at people who were eating and the dogs were called away by the bar staff but it was pointless because they just kept getting under people's feet and sniffing at people's food. Not my idea of hygiene. Visitors had dogs which was fine as they were kept on a lead. Don't know who the owner is of the dogs but when he appeared he seemed to think it was amusing that one of the dogs had eaten a bar of chocolate from a customer's bag. The bar staff pointed out chocolate is poison to dogs. If the dogs belong to the owner/manager of the pub he needs to consider his clientele. I for one won't be back there as there are plenty of lovely places to eat and drink in Arundel without the bother of dogs sniffing at my food.

We spent two nights at this hotel and had dinner there the first night (we had other plans for the Saturday night or we would have eaten there on the second night too). The room was really nice, warm and had a lovely comfy bed. We had a very tasty meal in the restaurant and the staff were all really friendly and welcoming.

We stayed two nights in this pub on our first visit to Arundel. Our room was quiet and clean with a modern four-poster bed. We ate in the pub on the first night and enjoyed the steak and ale pie and whole plaice (on special) - all nicely cooked with fresh vegetables. Full English breakfast was included in the price and was well cooked and delicious. All staff were very friendly and we will definitely stay again on our next visit. The only slight drawback was a small car park although there was plenty of free on-street parking nearby.

very slow service, ordered a 2 x meals with an Expected delivery of 14 minutes, after 30 mins, enquired about the delay and was confronted with rude staff, and asked to wait as wouldn't be long. still waiting, and asked for refund in the end, which then takes 3 days for bank. refuse to refund drinks that came with meal, when we wouldn't have drank them if we thought we wasent going to be eaten. not an apology for delay or anything. Just rude poor customer service. cheap I know but no excuse for poor manners.

Disinterested staff - very poor service- unhygienic Visited to have tea and cake - apart from being very expensive there were wasps flying about on the cake section- they were landing on the cakes - when I informed the staff about the wasps - one assistant said to me ‘that’s ok they are not poisonous’ she was not bothered at all - I have to say this put me off and we did not have any refreshments. On the way out I informed customer services - she apologised but didn’t do anything. However we went to high down garden centre cafe where the service cake and tea were excellent
