Fantastic fish and chips from take away.

It makes me sad to leave this less positive review as I always enjoy the take away food from this place. We decided to dine in for a change last week and it was not a good experience. Take away only in future.

Had some nice fish and chips first night ..always seemed to be busy

Second visit, disappointing compared to the first. Restaurant not as clean and some flies about ..... Food - massive portions (and we eat a lot!) Steamed cod was great for a healthy alternative. Service .... no smile. Staff not friendly or happy to be there. Overall OK, but not the best around and we won't be back Try .... Simply fish brixham Rockfish

Very poor quality fish and chips (fried mash)

On holiday. Just called in for fish and chips. Service was fast. Fish was hot and chunky but tasteless. The chips were same- bland with some undercooked. Both my husband and myself left most of the chips. They went in the bi. Waste of money.

Sign in the window saying they won an award in 1994 and honestly it seems like that was the last time they cleaned the place- walked in and walked straight back out. Old food and greasy wrappers on the floor under most of the tables and high chairs were soaking wet for some reason...best not to ask questions! We arrived at 4:45 and the place was empty and had only been open for 15mins- no idea why no one had cleaned before opening. Tables and chairs tatty and worn. Seemed overpriced from a quick look at the menu before we left.

Just bought Fish and Chips -worst I have ever had. Chips undercooked and Cod was solid and hard. Disgusting 🤮

Omg! I paid £10.90 for takeaway haddock & chips. I was so disappointed. The fish was thin & tasteless & the batter soft & undercooked! As for the chips; they were really oily & 'scrappy' . I would NOT recommend. Very poor in my view & I wish I hadn't been so hungry otherwise I would have returned them. Felt quite sick afterwards 🤮

Ordered large Cod, chips, fish cake and curry sauce with my GF, and from the start the young girls in there were not happy having have to serve us. I think they were too busy talking to one of girls younger brothers or something who was eating his chips on the service counter which I thought was really rude and unhygienic. Anyway the service was quick once it started so quickly got on our way. As we got to our destination we opened up the food and wow what a disappointment, the fish was soggy and greasy the chips were just awful and you don't get much at all and the fish cakes were terribly burnt, th only positive was the curry sauce which was OK.

As a local its sad to see how poor this is now, it seems an exercise in charge as much for as little as can get away with. My last piece of Cod had less fish than a fish finger. they are taking a fillet of fish and then cutting them into multiple small pieces and charging you for a fillet, chip portions all much smaller than used to be. The cooking oil is also clearly not being changed as regular as it used to. Its sad as its gone from a great fish and chip shop years ago to a very poor one, with the owner just looking to extract maximum profit. If it carry's on they will have no winter Business from Locals.

I used to buy fish and chips for years and pop in for coffee and cake with my Mum. We moved away for 6 years but just moved back!! Husband is new to the area. It was 8.40pm and he wanted fish and chips so I suggested Squires but he said it’s closing soon. I said ring them and see, tell them you’ll be there in 5 minutes. He’s now happily eating F & C saying they’re the nicest he’s had!! Thanks guys! Highly recommend!!!!

1 an awful take away. We have been going to Squires for years but lately night we threw half of our meal in the bin. The fish was all batter and the chips were dry. If you want fish and chips avoid Squires. Not only a bad take away but payed well over the going price. Carry on like that and the business WILL sadly close

Had a takeaway from squires, large cod more batter than cod very well disguised, chips we're good, batter bits excellent ,peas good but with a can the bill was over £16-00 very very poor value for money

The fish is incredible. The takeaway service so fast despite the queues. Lovely taste.

Prime location but poor food and service that definitely doesn't come with a smile! Refried food and clinging onto an award from a bygone age.

Young lady serving wasn't very helpful at all, then after we got part of our order with a sausage missing, I returned in to tell her, waiting for her to finish taking another order. She then blanked me continuing to take orders. I asked if it had to be cooked to be snapped at that "there's only one of us serving". They were cooked, waiting. No appology, fetched it and virtually threw it on the papers. Food was very greesy and fish not the best, chips were rubbery and lots of bad bits. One to avoid until staff are taught manners and food improved.

Have had food from this Chip shop a few times. Always courteous staff. This time was no different. Fish cooked perfectly the chips were so full of grease though. Portion sizes are big .

Don't waste your money Squires has always been good until recently. Visited yesterday had standard fish and chips £21 which is about the right price within minutes of eating my husband was taken ill and spent some considerable time in the bathroom. I didn't finish mine as I felt so sick. Such a shame but we won't be visiting again and wouldn't recommend to anyone else.

Absolutely shocking the fish was doing backstroke in the oil chips had black spots all over went through me faster than a Porsche at le mans IMODIUM is your friend 😭😭

Can't fault the surroundings or staff, who were very pleasant however, despite the food being very nicely cooked, the size of the piece of fish I had was really disappointing. For Rock and chips at just under £14, I would have expected an adult sized portion. We were down visiting family, not been there before and pleasantly surprised to see Rock on the menu (quite rare in the South West). There was no S, M or large option so just expected what normally turns up in all other chippies.

Used to come here all the time! But it has down very down hill. The sausage was even burnt from over frying. The fish and chips were very greasy. Terrible!

For for a place that only do fish and chips, I don't understand how you can make food so bland or soggy.

Not many places do a pea fritter, nice one. Chips were cooked nice and all put in paper boxes for take away.

After reading latest mixed reviews about squires we were a bit apprehensive about going again after being 2 years since we last visited. So glad we ignored the negative ones. As always the food was delicious, girl serving was very pleasant and food was cooked fresh while we waited. Portion sizes were great as well. We'll definitely go again when we holiday down here

Good food, but staff can be found shouting and swearing in the back.

We were staying locally whilst on holiday and often drove by so decided one evening to give this place a try. Food looked nice and was reasonably priced, the large portion of chips was enormous but the taste wasn’t all that great which let it down massively. Sausages tasted very cheap and the batter didn’t coat them all that well. The chips didn’t stand up to our expectations as were really greasy and soggy as a result which was a great shame!

Just fully bin robbed off the girl in there made order of kids chips sausage chips gravy and chip and gravy charged me 20 pound give us 5 portions of chips no gravy some grotty bits of fish absolutely steaming about it after 5 hour drive to get here we find here to eat and get robbed so yeh stay away if your hungry had to go spend more money to not eat 20 quids worth of chips

Excellent service and the fish was really lovely.

Tried for the first time and the service is great, didnt have to wait long. Big chip portions, shame they’re so soggy though :( Had to pop em in my airfryer

After a busy day out we decided to get Fish and chips for tea. We didn't really know where to go. We are so happy we found Squires. It has a lovely large seating area but we wanted to go back to our Holiday Park so we got takeaway. It was absolutely delicious. The fish was cooked fresh, no soggy batter or greasy chips. Just delicious. Excellent service too. Would definitely go back there.

I live locally, went for a standard fish and chips and decided to add mushy peas, the cost was over £13 quid......for a takeaway! But that wasn't the point, it was awful, chips were not cooked properly and the fish was a soft and soggy mess, to add insult to injury I had to remind the girl to add the mushy peas, which tasted revolting so I need not have bothered. Its a shame because this place used to be really good.

We have eaten here many many times and always loved the food. Lovely people and a great place to recharge.

Terrible, greasy, soggy chips. Tiny bit of cod with again soggy batter, no crisp to it at all! Ended up in the bin! Should have gone into Brixham and paid more for quality!

I used Squires all the time when I used to live around the corner. Popped in for takeaway lunch today. The food has gone downhill. Used to be the best chippy around. £22 for two standard cod and chips, even Dick Turpin wore a mask, his service was considerably quicker too. By the time I had travelled 5 minutes back to a family home, they were cold, soggy and fatty. Very disappointing.

Chips were swimming in grease and hard literally had to throw them away. The blonde girl serving was more interested in her phone and laughing with the girl who was cooking the chips. Won't go there again

Our usual chip shop in Brixham is closed for the winter so we decided to try Squires in churston, the chips were a mass of soggy white potato and the fish wasn't cooked properly in fact , I had to throw most of them away so there is no chance that I will ever use this place again.

Purchased fish and chips takeaway - nothing unusual or difficult. Got home (10 mins if that) and food already cold - some chips almost icy cold. Fish very small indeed considering it cost £7.70 a piece. Again not hot and batter really soggy. Found some chips totally raw! Some just showing colour but solid and uncooked inside. Total cost for two fish suppers was £21.80 but is was not worth even half that. Squires proudly displays some sort of award received in 1995, I don't think they would come close now. Really disappointed with the food. Will not be going there again.

Great food and service, need some new chairs.

Great food and service. Only negative was the size of plates. We both had cod and chips with peas. Portions were ample but the plate size was way to small with no room to be able to cut through the food without some food spilling onto the table.

Always used this fish and chip shop when down in Paignton, have to say never again , fish wasn’t done, battered sausage over done (burnt ) chips not very nice

A good all-around fish & chip restaurant/ takeaway. Great location with parking.

Ordered chicken and mushroom pies (£4.30 for an individual pie) plus chips and mushy peas. Got home unwrapped ready to enjoy. The pies were so thin there was very very little amount of filling 1 small piece chicken no mushrooms just a sauce. They were so awful my husband and I threw them away. We have used this fish &chip shop for 23yrs, but I will carefully consider whether to go again. At £8.60 for two inedible pies that we expected to enjoy, were vile.

Great chips and generous portions. Chicken bites were tasty too and very juicy.

Nice place good food good service. Chairs could do with a few repairs or just replace them all told great piece of fish. Worth a visit thankyou.

Only had takeaway, so just the non-committal 3 stars for Atmosphere. Down to Berry Head with conserving friends. We benefitted from fairly free flowing traffic along A303/A30/M5/A380, and arrived at Squires just in time to be served before 2pm on a Friday afternoon. I can recommend the Mushy Pea Fritter, tasty, toothsome and filling.

Great Fish and chips, good service. Arrived around 7.00.pm Got served quickly and the food was of a good quality and tasty.

We moved to Devon in March having and have been trying to find the best chips in the area. We were previously spoilt by having the Calamari in Polegate. (Rubbish Town but best chips ever!) Anyway, Squires is very clean and has an attached restaurant if you fancy a sit down chippy tea. The take away section is staffed entirely by teenagers with few social skills. As for the food, I had a mushy pea fritter 8/10 but the chips..... soggy, not crispy, lukewarm and nor particularly fluffy inside. 5/10 Reasonably priced take away, very overpriced for sit down.

Avoid at all costs. You will have to wait an eternity and it certainly isn’t worth the wait. The staff are rude and don’t know what they are doing

Went into restaurant and was directed to chip shop as they were closing. There was a bench n table outside so this was fine. The chips were not that nice though and we ended up throwing them away rather than eating them.

Got takeaway fish and chips and was not happy it was not worth the £30 we paid the chips were pale and not nice with several rotten ones the batter was dark and overdone but soggy and tasteless. The staff also weren’t very friendly. We won’t be going there again.

After an evening swim we decided to stop off for a take away fish and chips. Had a couple of not so good take aways from here over the years but not so bad as to stop us using them again. But this one was the final nail. Fish was terrible, not much bigger than a fish finger, thick soggy batter and tasteless mushy so called cod. Chips were passable but not worth another visit. Such a shame as years ago this place was one of the best.

We have dine at Squires numerous times and the food was very good and the service very attentive. On our last visit on the 27th December we were very disappointed. The quality of the food was dismal. Our fish was overcooked and dry, the chips were not hot. The staff does not seem interested and were arguing. The lemon sole were priced at £13.95 but not worth that. A truly disappointing meal and will avoid this restaurant.

Never had a bad meal here yet - and we have been coming here on and off for many years now. There is always a warm service backed up with the tastiest cod and chips. Good choice of other dishes are available and the establishment also has a take away service too. Although we tend to dine in.

Have lived near here for 30+ years. They used to produce really good fish & Chips. The last couple of times it has been verry poor. Chips were pale and soggy. Cod was bland covered in soggy batter.

Large cod and chips nice but kids food a let down

We bought our dinner from the takeaway. We got 4 meals for £38 which is a little bit dearer than we normally pay, but the food was very nice, very hot and the portions were big. We actually took our food back to where we were staying in Brixham and it was still hot when we got there, for which we were very grateful. They do also have an eat-in option if that is what you would prefer, but if it's takeaway you want then we can definitely recommend Squires :-)

Great food good value and friendly staff. Have visited a few times now and the cod and chips is lovely. My mother had plaice and chips and said it was beautiful

This place came highly recommended by a friend from Scotland. We purposely waited an hour and a half for opening time at 4.30pm. My party of three decided to use the restaurant,rather than the takeaway(due to the recommendation) we were the first to receive our meals. For some unfathomable reason my cod was barely Luke warm. Every thing else about the meal was excellent. My daughter's cod was hit, as expected, and my granddaughter's meal was also excellent. I informed the very pleasant young waitress about my fish. She maintained that the fish had just come out of the fryer. She did offer to replace the fish, but I always expect my food to be properly presented first time, so I declined. I left most of the cod . I felt extremely let down. I can only guess at the reason for the problem

While staying local for a holiday we stopped for some eat in food. The waitress that attended to us was polite and served us quickly.. my partner had a prawn cocktail that was a good size and tasted great, me and my daughter had cod and chips.. the fish was very good quality, very flaky and a good size. chips and sides were also fine. Would recommend and can't fault the place

We first ate here after the local Air show,about a month ago and enjoyed it very much. Yesterday we decided to revisit, and whilst checking opening times, decided to read recent reviews. They weren't brilliant, but we went ahead based on our previous experience. So glad we did, the fish and chips were lovely, obviously freshly cooked. The young lady that served us was very polite and attentive. Will definitely return in the future.

Overall a good chippy, however we were stood waiting for about 10-15 minutes. The food is great however be prepared to wait a bit.

Disgusting service. The fish cakes are so small you should get 2 in a portion at £2.50 each. My dinner was sat there 10 mins before I got it. Chips cold and hard , gravy like wall paper paste. Service is so slow and no customer service at all.

Chips were dreadful, seemed reheated, chewy and dry. Battered sausage was nice as was the curry sauce. My partner said the service was good though, the guy was really nice.

This is a gem of a place to go to for fish and chips..Service and food brilliant..Prices very good..Could just do with a makeover though.

Spent the night wIth diarrhoea!

Not been for a few years and skeptical from some reviews but had takeaway and it was good. Large portions and fair range to choose from. Staff were great & efficient. Parking near.

Really good fish and chips, have been going there regularly. Good service, no heirs and graces but clean and reasonably priced eat in or take out.

Sadly, this isn't the award winning fish and chip shop it used to be. You have to pick your moment to use it.

We live locally and this is our local fish and chip shop which has always been fantastic until tonight. When not only did they get our order completely wrong when there were no other customers to serve, the quality of the fish was abysmal!! Normally outstanding and because we were called into collect the order didn’t realise until we got home. Staff serving completely disinterested when we returned and clearly not bothered. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

Just bought a portion chips and a battered sausage, and they taste awful. The chips tasted like they had been sat under a heat lamp for most of day and there was way to much salt, which also made it inedible. Will not be going back there!

Bought two cod and chips today fish was tasteless tough and grey! The chips were so hard you couldn't even push a fork in to them will never buy from here again!!

Really disappointing. The chips were stale and had clearly just been reheated. Sad because it looked do nice from the outside.

The five stars is reserved for the hard working Emma working alone serving a packed restaurant on her own otherwise 3.5 stars as the owner should employ more due to the workload. The restaurant itself was nice, chairs a bit worn put this is being picky. The loo was really clean. Food was presented really well and was tasty.
