I sat in for Fish and Chips and a glass of Merlot. The service was excellent I was promptly attended to the food was crisp and fresh, the wine was of drinkable quality and a large 250ml glass was less than £5, result! The staff were young and very pleasant, I dont often tip but in this place I was so pleased I left 10%. Next year when I am in the are I will make sure I have dinner there!

We had the misfortune of buying cod and chips take away, never again. This used to be such a tasty take away. The cod was clearly re heated, so over cooked so tasteless. The chips were warm and awful. The service was I'm afraid terrible, girls serving kept touching their hair, handled money then the food. We have used Squires so many times, but never ever again.

Have been going to Squires for 26 years and have always been happy. It would take too long to explain my experience but I left feeling intimidated and embarrassed with a tray of cold hard chips. The situation was extremely badly managed and I would not advise anyone to go there. I would like to speak to the owner but I doubt this will happen.

Visited Squires while on summer holiday August 2024. We popped in early evening after a day at the beach, we were ready to be fed! We both had the large fish and chips and it was delicious. The fish was huge, fresh and the batter was light and tasty. The chips were spot on and the mushy peas were the best ever. I would recommend Squires, the staff were friendly and the service was excellent. Nicest chippy tea I’ve had in ages!

Sign in the window saying they won an award in 1994 and honestly it seems like that was the last time they cleaned the place- walked in and walked straight back out. Old food and greasy wrappers on the floor under most of the tables and high chairs were soaking wet for some reason...best not to ask questions! We arrived at 4:45 and the place was empty and had only been open for 15mins- no idea why no one had cleaned before opening. Tables and chairs tatty and worn. Seemed overpriced from a quick look at the menu before we left.

Ordered large Cod, chips, fish cake and curry sauce with my GF, and from the start the young girls in there were not happy having have to serve us. I think they were too busy talking to one of girls younger brothers or something who was eating his chips on the service counter which I thought was really rude and unhygienic. Anyway the service was quick once it started so quickly got on our way. As we got to our destination we opened up the food and wow what a disappointment, the fish was soggy and greasy the chips were just awful and you don't get much at all and the fish cakes were terribly burnt, th only positive was the curry sauce which was OK.

As a local its sad to see how poor this is now, it seems an exercise in charge as much for as little as can get away with. My last piece of Cod had less fish than a fish finger. they are taking a fillet of fish and then cutting them into multiple small pieces and charging you for a fillet, chip portions all much smaller than used to be. The cooking oil is also clearly not being changed as regular as it used to. Its sad as its gone from a great fish and chip shop years ago to a very poor one, with the owner just looking to extract maximum profit. If it carry's on they will have no winter Business from Locals.

Total cost for two fish suppers was £21.80 but is was not worth even half that. Squires proudly displays some sort of award received in 1995, I don't think they would come close now. My party of three decided to use the restaurant, rather than the takeaway(due to the recommendation) we were the first to receive our meals. For some unfathomable reason my cod was barely Luke warm. Every thing else about the meal was excellent. My daughter's cod was hit, as expected, and my granddaughter's meal was also excellent. I informed the very pleasant young waitress about my fish. She maintained that the fish had just come out of the fryer. She did offer to replace the fish, but I always expect my food to be properly presented first time, so I declined. I left most of the cod . I felt extremely let down. I can only guess at the reason for the problem

We live locally and this is our local fish and chip shop which has always been fantastic until tonight. When not only did they get our order completely wrong when there were no other customers to serve, the quality of the fish was abysmal!! Normally outstanding and because we were called into collect the order didn’t realise until we got home. Staff serving completely disinterested when we returned and clearly not bothered. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY

Just bought a portion chips and a battered sausage, and they taste awful. The chips tasted like they had been sat under a heat lamp for most of day and there was way to much salt, which also made it inedible. Will not be going back there!

The place does have a nice view of the harbour if you sit outside so that is a good point. My aunt had a BLT sandwich and chips which looked quite nice. I asked for a Cajun chicken sandwich and I have to say I was very disappointed. I don't leave bad reviews often but this was very poor. All I got was soft white bread with dryish sliced chicken which had been cooked with some kind of rub. It was difficult to tell if it was Cajun spice as not very hot or flavourful. Literally nothing else was in this sandwich. Luckily they bring sachets of sauces to the table and I added some mayo to it. The chips were fresh and fully cooked so those were ok. I probably wouldn't eat here again. I hope you read these reviews and do things better!

Just a typical spoons, you get what you pay for. Cheap food, but cooked as you ask. Beer is always good, service is typical of a spoons, but still better than other pubs in the area.

Went in here tonight for a few drinks before going to the local Indian restaurant. My wife and daughter sat down and i went to the bar where there was no one waiting to be served, I waited whilst the staff continued talking to other customers sat drinking at the bar but was ignored. A couple came in behind me and they must have been regulars as the bar staff went to serve them, only when I stated I was next the attitude I received was not that of good customer service. There are far better pubs in Paignton, give this one a wide birth

Came away bitterly disappointed. This was to be a 'milestone ' birthday treat. We were looking forward to a beautiful afternoon tea with a table covered with a crisp, white tablecloth, laidened with delicious teatime treats overlooking Torbay. The experience was nothing like we had hoped for. No one to meet and greet us upon arrival. We were initially ignored then directed, not shown, to a cracked brown formica table 'set' for us with two paper napkins, knives and forks and two glass tumblers, in a corner, away from the main dining area and the window. Eventually, we were approached by Heidi, whom we assumed to be restaurant manager. We asked to be reseated and a table was cleared for us. We were served a pot of tea for two and awaited our food. An hour later, we were still waiting. During that time we witnessed several disgruntled customers complaining. Although there were three waiters present, we did not receive any service or attention from them. After an hour, Heidi reappeared and was very apologetic. She offered us a complimentary glass of Prosecco. Our booking had been for 3pm. By now it was 4.30. The food arrived and like the tea table, was nothing like we were led to expect. The sandwiches were not as described on the menu. Some of the fillings were spread so thinly that they were difficult to identify. The pastries were missing. The cakes were not the patisserie style fancies shown in the promotional pictures, but more like traybakes cut into different sized chunks and didn't seem particularly fresh. Our teapot was refreshed and we were given new cups and "saucers", which turned out to be side plates. Heidi did try to make us comfortable, but by that time, all hope of enjoying our afternoon was lost. We did ask a waiter for a box to take our cakes away but were told "We don't do boxes" and we're directed to a pile of paper napkins and told to help ourselves. The three saving graces are; At £25, it wasn't the most expensive afternoon tea. I would have paid more for a first class experience. Heidi did her best to keep customers happy, with what appeared to be very little support from her colleagues. Whatever the Imperial are paying her, it's not enough. The one thing that the hotel did deliver on was the magnificent view, but I give the Imperial no credit for that whatsoever. Lastly, I sent an email to the Imperial later that day, and to add insult to injury, now, almost a week later, have had no response. NB. Pictured - what the Imperial's advertising led us to expect. NOT what we got !
