As a regular visitor to Squires, weekly, often two or three times a week, I’m saddened by what seems to be a lack of consistent friendly service, the staff that wait on the customers have a friendly approach and do their very best, however a very hostile attitude towards them which is very noticeable to us as customers, from the newly appointed manager seems to be causing a decline in positive service and the kitchen is regularly unable to offer full service. The change in regular long term staff is incredibly noticeable and the general feeling is not so welcome anymore.

A table was booked for afternoon cream tea. In that morning Squires telephoned to take a note of preferred sandwich fillings. We arrived at 15.00 and there were not many customers in the cafe. We were treated very well and most pleased by the high quality of food and drink. Service generally very good. Then we went off to the Opera a mile away.

Arrived at 10:30am for a Brunch with friends, we were informed that there would be a 30minute wait for food. We had ordered drinks by 10:30 and breakfasts by 10:50 the drinks took over 20 mins to arrive. People around us, and arrived after us were receiving drinks and food. We waited for just over an hour, at 12:10pm we left without having food. The staff there were apologetic, gracious and understanding, they were severely understaffed on a Father’s Day Sunday and there was NO manager. I have been here many times but this was the worst, there aren’t enough staff to do Table service and waiting times are unreasonable. One of my friends had to leave on the train with No food. This is absolutely not ok for a local Garden Centre Cafe. I am incredibly disappointed and angry.

Very disappointing visit. Arrived at 10.30 am, Orded brekfast/brunch at 11am by 12.10 no food. We had been warned there was a wait. But when other (people who came after us) food arrived. After over an hour we left with no food. Waitresses very nice and polite but had been put in a horrible situation. There was not enough staff for a busy fathers day. The manger was not in that day.

We were a table of 3 people, and each of us ordered a “4 item” brunch. Each item order arrived on an individual side plates -which not only looked very sad, it also then requiring our own assembly to build a breakfast! e.g I ordered a Sausage, Poached egg, Mushrooms, Toast, I had 4 separate plates for each item. The presentation was very very sad and unappetising! Add to this, the plates were not warm and the food was not hot. We ordered a further pot of tea, and when delivered we were not relieved of the piles of plates (despite me offering the dirties! It was ignored) so we were pushed for room on the table. The waiting staff were very friendly but the food and efficiency let them down. The garden centre looks very nice on entry - it is a main chain and so they follow the same presentation of all the stores, However.. the customer toilets are shocking and really let the store down! Very small, dirty, and in need of serious maintenance - Word to the manage, putting several reed diffusers in a cubicle does not distract you from the shabby, broken, dirty facilities! I will be trying Dobbies down the road for my next visit.

I thought I'd review this cafe as there are some awful reviews submitted. I've been here many times and the food has been excellent. The staff work hard and are always pleasant. The only criticism is, and it applies to all the Squires cafe I have been to, it has remained table service since COVID and not returned to counter service. This is totally unnecessary. It's much faster to go to the counter, and see what the food looks like, especially cakes, order and pay for it than to wait to be seated and then for someone else to come to take the order.

Awful experience all round. Food was dire. Chaotic and frantic staff, lack of leadership. More complaints and refunds than I have ever seen in 1 visit. For a small establishment the kitchen was backed up with 10 covers. For the successful brand of Squires, known for their Sunday roast there was not one ordered. They were exceptionally quiet and yet they struggled. Trolleys were climbing the walls with dirty dishes, the chef was having to deliver her own food. There were more staff than customers. The coffee was terrible and the cakes looked unappealing. My opinion, don't go unless you have to and if you are disabled do not use their excuse of an accessible disabled toilet. It was difficult to access and too small for a wheelchair!

I popped in to Squires east horsley as a quick treat of a decent coffee before my shift started at 1 pm. I arrived at 11.30 am. Plenty of time one would think. I waited 4 minutes to be led to a table and then 20 minutes passed and still no waitress stopped by to take a single order of coffee. I couldn't even politely holler out as I'd lost my voice but I kept putting my hand up. Still nothing. Staff were busying themselves tidying the cake area till area. After a while a colleague of mine was leaving with her client and commented to me she had been watching in anticipation to see if anyone would come over. She even offered to go and fetch a waitress. It was now near 12pm and I decided to just leave with her. I'm not sure if there's a transition period going on post Christmas, however I think it would be nice for the person who meets and greets does an eyeball follow up to check if those she seated are catered for. I look forward to returning and seeing this cafe back up to a better service. Happy new year..

My partner ordered the soup and sourdough bread and a peppermint tea while I ordered a toasted teacake and normal tea. It was lunchtime but not overly busy. Teas arrived after around ten minutes but it was a further ten minutes until the soup arrived. No sign of the teacake. We flagged down a passing waitress who apologized and we heard her ask the person behind the counter where it was. Apparently "it wasn't on the order". Ten minutes later we had to ask for it again (and of course I'd long finished my small pot of tea) and the exasperated waitress had yet another word. It got brought over fairly swiftly with a rather brusque "sorry" from the surly person behind the counter with one tiny scrap of butter so we had to ask for more. By this time my partner had of course finished her soup which was, to be fair, good hence the two out of five score. Sadly the teacake was cold and the butter very solid so more or less destroyed the teacake in trying to spread butter. One waitress was flat out working very hard which can't be said for the others. Wouldn't visit again.

Meeting some friends here for lunch, I was left feeling very disappointed. Customers now have to wait to be seated, even though the place was almost empty. Some of the old favourites, like paninis and welsh rarebit have vanished, and prices are much higher. Baked potatoes are £9.95 or £10.95! Nothing exceptional about the fillings. All sandwiches £8.95 and toasties £9.95. Even one scoop of ice cream is £2.95. I chose a 'wheelbarrow toastie', basically ham and cheese with onion, rocket and a small side salad, £9.95. Unfortunately not worth the money, very chewy ham and very little cheese. Sorry, but I felt I had been 'ripped off'. My friends chose prawn cocktails at £8.50 each, which they enjoyed. I used to enjoy lunches at Squires, but now feel it has totally lost its way. Rather sad.

We booked a table here for 9 of us for Mothering Sunday and we were really impressed. Despite the restaurant being really busy, the staff (especially Mandy) were polite and professional and took time with us to make sure we had ordered and had everything we needed. The food was served quickly and was absolutely delicious, I had the salmon which was perfectly cooked, those in the party who had the beef said it was equally as delicious. We spoke to the chef who told us how she made the amazing sweet mustard glaze for the salmon, I am going to try and recreate it at home it was that good! Very reasonably priced with excellent food and service, with so many places catering for the lowest common denominator, this place definitely stands out. Thanks to everyone for our lovely family lunch.

After paying for a lunch special and watching other people receive identical meals, I was left hungry and disappointed by a chaotic, disorganised and seemingly overstaffed restaurant.I was told the computer wasn't sending the orders to the kitchen - located directly behind the counter. Hard to imagine why the computer is so fundamental in relaying messages about 6ft to kitchen.Nobody bothered to check if my lack of food was ok, or really dealt with the situation in any meaningful way. I left feeling disappointed and hungry, and forced to buy a second lunch elsewhere.Maybe the garden centre is good, but the restaurant will take your money and serve you no food. You will however be given the opportunity to watch other people eat the exact same meal, some of whom ordered afterwards.Perhaps you might even get to watch 5 or 6 people staff milling around, none of whom thought to check or try that hard to rectify things.

Service was slow mainly due to the computer system there is plenty of people there working in a very small area between the tool and the kitchen and it would have been much better to communicate verbally than through computer systems. Ended up my partner did not get served at all they missed his older totally whilst mine was obviously pre-prepared Malaysian curry with the prawns thrown in at the last minute and microwaved rice the cakes were nice. But in the end my colleague asked for a refund as he hasn't been served despite the fact the same dish been served to at least one other person.

Big disappointment today, having popped in for breakfast on 27th Dec. Seems to have changed owner and management but not sure when. At least a year ago it was run by a very friendly team including manager. This morning we arrived at about 10ish and the restaurant was so cold that even the poor assistant serving coffee said her nose was ice cold and that was standing by the coffee machine making coffees. A large part of the restaurant is panes of glass and although you can see a large radiator on one side, no other heating was working. This was past 10am, so ample time to have put the heating on. I asked for the heating to be put on and the agreed it was needed but unfortunately no one knew how to flick the switch. I asked another assistant (not in the coffee area to ask the other staff) which he agreed to but never came back with an update. So I went to the cash till by the exit and the other staff said no one that was working knew how to turn the heating on. Actually it was warmer by the exit doors that were opening and closing than in the restaurant. Again I asked why the manager on her way was the only one who knew how to turn the heating on. They said others knew but they weren’t working today. Can you believe that? In this day and age people still aren’t trained adequately. None of the staff apologized and all seem to be quite laissez faire. Finally the manager came and she said it had been turned on. She didn’t apologize either. Needless to say all the people in the restaurant were eating with their coats on. Our 3 year old toddler had frozen hands. We won’t be going back in a rush. Such a shame as the garden centre was great a few years ago. I had also popped in just before Christmas and met a very rude manager on duty. He was rude in the sense I queued up at the till with some speciality beers to buy but both staff were under age and couldn’t serve you. So they had to call the manager who took his time. When he eventually arrived I asked why they couldn’t put one under age and one older member of staff on the tills like they do at sainsburys so the younger one just signals to the older person for authorization. That advice went unheeded. Needless to say that was probably his way of feeling needed but seriously to employ that tactic on that Saturday afternoon just before Christmas at 4pm? Some serious organization is needed there. On a more positive note the restaurant staff were very nice if rather unsupported.

I don't like to be negative because I think with a few tweaks it could be excellent. Simple things like wiping tables, cleaning away dirty cutlery could make it more inviting. The food we had came out quite quickly. It was a described, but a little pricey for the quantity. Two slices of ham, two small fried eggs and a handful of chips for £8-9. It did taste good. We were in the area and wanted to see what the Café Bar could offer. Our experience was rather mixed. We arrived a little after 1230 and it was moderately busy but still with free seating. Selections are made at the Counter and we ordered a pork stew and some Pollock as well as latte coffees and water. The coffee was excellent and made as we requested. Regrettably the trays are a little flimsy and the cups slightly spilled as I lifted the tray.Cutlery and other accessories are at a station next to the drinks and ice cream cabinets. There was a shortage of forks and glasses. The former was quickly rectified once I had drawn attention to the situation. Our food was promptly served (they use small number signs to assist) and, while I had a reasonable portion of pork stew, the Pollock was a bit small and was lacking any real amount of sauce. Some of the vegetables were quite well cooked but they had not been properly drained and were rather mushy as a result. Both the Pork Stew and Pollock were rather tasteless and bland. The Staff at the Counter were very friendly and helpful. I did not go back, I am afraid, to offer feedback. I would normally do so. There's a need to improve table clearance; the table behind us sat covered in plates and crockery and part eaten food throughout our visit - and there were several more tables where the same was true. Two of the three drinks' menus on our table had been discoloured by coffee stains and were rather tatty as a result. There appears to be quite a good selection of cakes, scones and pastries as well as jacket potatoes and toasted sandwiches. The daily specials were not really remarkable and, while not expensive, will not encourage us to have them again.Staff training needs a bit of attention and it was a shame that the warmth of welcome was not matched by the quality and taste of the food and maintaining the cleanliness of the Café. While it was not a disaster it was certainly nothing more than average. Our bill with water coffee and 2 x mains came to just short of £25 so not too expensive. There's free parking and a well stocked and extensive garden centre too.

We came here to watch the rugby but left pretty quickly. Dirty toilets and rude bar staff, when asked why the beer is being served in plastic cups, we were told that only regulars get glass. One way to ensure that I don't become a regular I suppose

The food was absolutely horrible. Only just this side of edible to be honest but we were hungry and the place was packed so didn't want to raise a fuss

The building itself was unbearably hot and I felt sorry for the staff working in those conditions. However, she was very friendly and efficient. Tables outside had lovely views but could have done with a wash-down. Coffee was good.

Nice looking place but it stops there. We wanted cocktails but none to be had. The garden was pleasant but no cushions on the chairs and they could have done with a sweep. The loud fan was slightly off putting too. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Starter was pork belly, tasty but portions were far too big. Snapper with couscous and vegetables was tasty enough but far too big, we found it slightly off putting. The fennel was so hard despite asking for a steak knife was inedible. I felt like we were having home cooked food to be honest. It needs refinement

Very disappointing visit as used to be a lovely pub. No precautions in place for covid - no details being taken from visitors and just 1 small token bottle of hand sanitiser on the bar. Big groups of very young people (made me feel old in mid-30s!)with no attempt at social distancing. Toilets were dirty and smelly. Won't be going back!
