Our firsy visit for 16 years! Why we,ve left it so long I really don't know! It was a quiet birthday lunch and goodness me how enjoyable the food was. Unfortunately we had starters and main course which left no room (Even desert bellies were full!) as the portions were more than genereous. Wasn,t overly busy but enough trade was moving through to maintain a pleasant atmosphere. Wont leave it another 16 years before revisiting, we just have to sample the dessert menu.

Why had they not told us and left the steaks on the specials chalk board. It was early in the evening you would have thought they would have adequate steaks in! So we were very disappointed. Four of us meet twice a year and chose the Squire and Horse on a friend’s recommendation that ... “it has the best roast potatoes”.We were given a round table to the right of the bar opposite a very welcoming open fire. We were pleasantly warm but not uncomfortably hot.I think the Christmas menu will be available soon, but we had the main menu. Two had melon and Parma ham two had pate for starters. They were beautifully presented. I had pate. I am sorry I didn’t take a photo. It was in the middle of the plate with a little salad and 4 slices of toast pointing upwards on the four sides. It looked rather like a toast tent on the plate. Each slice was about 7 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. (I suspect a baguette had been sliced long ways).Depending on your appetite, you may opt to not eat all the toast as you could be too full for the main course. The pate was very tasty smooth and soft. The salad was good and so was the toast (just more toast than I would want).I took photos of the main course dishes we had. I had duck breast with a pepper sauce, two of my friends had stuffed chicken breast and one had lambs liver. They all looked tremendous. My photos haven’t done them justice. But I hope they give you an idea. The order of the photos is liver, duck and chicken. We all enjoyed them. Vegetables were included and served in separate bowls. We didn’t manage to clear our plates. The portions we very decent without being overwhelming. But we’d already had starters.Having gone on the recommendation that they had wonderful roast potatoes, none of us had them! The liver came with creamy mash and the duck came with dauphinois. The waitress pointed out that the menu said the chicken was with mash but there wasn’t enough. She offered dauphinois and my friends were very happy. We had no room for pudding. Three of us had coffee. Mine was an Americano. Quite satisfactory - but there are better coffees available in the general neighbourhood. We arrived at 7.00 and left at 10.00.It was absolutely fantastic. We had a fairly leisurely meal and could catch up on each other’s news in a very welcoming atmosphere.By 10.00 the restaurant side of the pub was quiet. This is a pub to eat in at the conventional dinner times. It doesn’t appear to be somewhere for late night dining. We loved it, but it could feel slow if you want to be in eat and out. Having said that, I would think that if you told the staff you want to be out in an hour (or so) they would probably accommodate you. We didn’t look that sort of table!I guess that you don’t have to book in advance. But I did. I would recommend you do the same. And if you have the roast potatoes, please let me know your verdict.

Having driven by this place numerous times and always wanted to try it, a Saturday afternoon appointment in Bury was the perfect opportunity to stop for lunch. Arrived at 1230 with my wife and waited at the bar to be served, no other customers were waiting but 2 members of staff were busy preparing drinks. Neither of them greeted us but we duly waited whilst they took drinks to tables and served food. By the time one of them came back to the bar to serve, other people were waiting and she had the temerity to ask who was next! Clearly my wife and I were wearing our invisible cloaks! We hadn't booked a table but were told that a group of 7 were due to arrive and it would get busy but we could go through to the dining area and sit where we wanted, although she sounded like this was an inconvenience. We decided to stay and went to order drinks but were told to go through to the dining area, sit down and our order for food and drink would be taken. There were plenty of tables to choose from so we sat and waited, others who arrived after us were served but alas we were not. After 30 mins of arriving in this establishment and being completely ignored, without a morsel of food or sip of liquid passing our lips, we upped and left but no member of staff saw us leave as we were still wearing our invisible cloaks! I don't give poor reviews lightly and am aware that bad on line reviews can make or break but this place needs to seriously up it's game in terms of service and hospitality.

We went for a meal with friends who had been here before. We had not been before. It is advisable to book a table. We got 10% off the main courses as it was the offer that was on for that evening for Members. Our friends had joined by paying £5 for a life long membership. We enjoyed the meal which was all served hot. The wine was very nice also. All food served is excellent quality, well presented and very tasty. Better than normal pub food. Many Thanks.

Food was very average. Waited an age for starters. Soft drinks were astronomically priced. Staff were o.k but not really engaging at all. £3.70 for a lemonade... OOOSH Won't return in a hurry.

We stopped here on our way back from Southampton and decided to both have Roast Turkey, and we were disappointed to get turkey breast roll joint and had little taste, the gravy was so thin, the potato's seemed to have been done in a deep fat fryer, certainly hadn't seen an oven! The final amazing thing was the Cranberry sauce, thinned down with vinegar, I have never had it like that before. Staff were great, spoilt by the food, not cheap either!

I have a biggish appetite. I ordered cheddar ploughmans and a bowl of chips. It was fantastic - branston, potato salad, cucumber, lettuce and salad, gerkhin, lovely large portion of good quality cheese, pickled onions, slices of juicy melon. Excellent.

We went for lunch at the Squire & Horse, due to friends recommendation, I wish I had not. It looks like a pub and I may be too judgemental, but nothing we had was up to standard. The shared starter platter of 3 dishes, only the chicken satay was edible. Our mains again were not up to standard. My steak and kidney pie was dry and tasted as if reheated. I left most of it. My partners "souffle aubergine" was not fully edible, the souffle very eggy. No member of the staff asked why the dishes were left. Very disappointing.

the barman was busy when I walked in, but greeted me with Hello, I will be with you in a minute. He produced a menu and explained that they did not do chicken and chips but did do Chicken Parmigana and explained it to me, I decided to try and ordered a Tian of Crab and prawns for a starter.I was shown a table and the staff seeing that I was a single diner, came and spoke to me when they passed, so I would not feel excluded, but they were not intrusive. The food when it came in a timely fashion was a vision of delight. the bread with the Prawns and Crab was the best I have ever tasted, The Prawns were fresh and plump, The crab was very tasty as was the other bits of the dish. The chicken dish was a pleasure to look at before you tasted it and tasted just as good. It came with a bowl of mixed vegtables, I am not fond of vegtables but I ate all of them. French Beans, Garden Peas, Carots.Cauliflower florets and a cap of Spinach, i do not know how the chef cooked the spinach, but it was delicious. I ate the whole bowl of hot seasoned chips as well. there was enough to feed two in each of the bowls. The food was so good that it went down well and the atmosphere in the restaurant was ideal to sit and let the food settle between courses, so you did not feel stuffed. For desert, I had the freshly cooked Bread and Butter pudding with hot custard and Vanilla Ice cream. It lookd wonderful when it arrived and tasted just as good when I ate it.The cost of the meal was reasonable and much less thatn I had expected. The service was freindly, informative and I felt cosetted, welcome and like an old valued freind. which was nice as iit was my first visit. I am disabled and had no problems getting in and out of the front of the building as I parked at the kerb at the front of the building, I had not noticed the car pak when I arrived. I had no problem using the toilet facilities at the front of the pub, where I dined.. There are steps between the restaurant tables at the back of the resturant with a handrail and the bar at the front of the building. I entered and dined at the front.,The access from the carpark which I explored after I had eaten seemed to be flat and had a safe and easy path which was flat . There is alfreco tables at the front of the building, but a lovelly garden to sit and eat in between the carpark and restaurant at the back of the building.

We didn’t enjoy our meal or anything about this below average eatery. The staff were officious and abrupt and the main courses were really so poor quality with everything tasteless and dripping in fat either deep fried or meat tough and cheap cuts... not worth eating, we felt cheated out of our money. The ale was revolting and tasted like it had gone off. The management appeared entirely unapproachable, the service was rubbish and no one bothered to bring a wine list, big delay on desert, no one asked if we had enjoyed our meal, it was like we were on a conveyer belt....an overpriced and disappointing one! I have been feeling sick ever since and am probably going to be sick shortly.

Three good friends returned for another delicious lunch. The calves liver is always excellent, and the steak and kidney pud is second to none. The grub is certainly much more than just 'pub' and I have eaten many of their dishes over the last few years. The Squire and Horse represents very good value for money and offers high standards. It won't be long before we will make a further return visit. Don't leave without sampling the super-crispy-crunchy roast potatoes!!!

My friend and I popped in for lunch today. The menu is excellent and varied especially for a veggie. My friend had the Mediterranean platter and I had the best baguette ever - the bread was superb and the chips to die for! And the peppermint tea was fresh.

We stopped here today for a light lunch. There was nothing on the menu below 8pounds so we chose a ploughed lunch to share between us with an extra portion of cheese. This proved to be perfect for us and very tasty. We sat in the garden which was pretty but a bit noisy as the pub is next to a main road .The service was good.

We decided to call in after a long trip and have a Sunday lunch, we had been here before with friends and had a lovely meal. However this was not the case the lamb was full of fat the veg was overcooked, and the so called roast potatoes were like small cubes cut up from a larger potato. To add to this the meal was very expensive for what we felt we had, sadly we will not be returning again

More than lived up to all the 5-star reviews on here. Nice and spacious pub, very friendly and helpful service, incredibly good food. Best pub eating experience we've had in many a year. Lovely view from the car park. And only about 200 metres from this pub is the lovely final home of John Galsworthy, author of The Forsyte Sage, though sadly it's now converted into apartments

Been a good while since i had dined at the Squire & Horse, but was not disappointed when going for Sunday lunch, we both had Roast Beef which was cooked perfect, good portion of potato's, perhaps the portion of vegetables could have been larger but everything was cooked to perfection.

1) my wife really enjoyed her vegetarian meal. Not a common event when eating out.2) my mum found a savoury suet pudding on the menu and loved it. Suet puddings have disappeared of most menus.3) I found a pork Wellington which I did not have to share with another person. Delicious.4) crispy roast potatoes.5) big servings.6) great staff

Friendly and helpful staff. Great chef. Delicious prawns with Asian noodles. Generous roast with plenty of crispy bits from the roast potatoes. Lots of steaming fresh hot veg. Hot plates! Cajun fish was made into a main course minimal extra charge. Great value - one starter, two mains and a glass of wine for £40! Best meal we’ve had. Worth a visit. Old pub charm and atmosphere with knockout food. Thanks to Joe who took care of us.
